My introduction to strategy games and the first game on Turbografx I ever beat. I was obsessed with this game. I didn't know they could make games like this until Military Madness came out. This game shaped how the rest of the 90s went for me more than any other single game. I wanted more like this. Shining Force 1 & 2, Dune: Battle For Arrakis, Dune 2000, Warcraft 1 & 2, Command and Conquer, and Starcraft I played all because of this one game. It's why all these years later I still seek out similar games from this era that I missed out on like Dark Wizard & Shining Force CD on Sega CD.
I wonder if you tried Unicorn Overlord. Im about half way and its awesome.
@@DPedroBoh I've not heard of that one. Just looked it up. That looks right up my alley & the fact it's developed by Vanillaware who made Grim Grimoire, Odin's Sphere, Muramasa: The Demon's Blade, & Dragon's Crown is all the more reason to try it. Thanks for the recommendation!

Have you tried Frozen Synapse ? While the graphics are a bit simplistic the gameplay is pretty fun. It's on Windows/Linux and I'm guessing there was an Android and iOS release though I don't know if they are still available as the game came out in like 2012.
And it's only a couple bucks. Literally $2.50 on GOG.

Loved this game when it was new, and still love it today. The TG16 was vastly underrated and under supported.
This game's a classic. Favorite TG-16 game by far. Nectaris for PS1 was even better with additional maps and some were quite challenging.
A few years ago, we all pitched in and got my buddy a TG16 for his bday. This is the game we play the most. Good shit!
This and Keith courage were the first two games I got for turbo. I spent so many hours getting manhandled in stage 14. I have massive nostalgia for this one.
I actually had this game on the Wii virtual console way back when. I think it's really good. I recommended it if you like games like Advance Wars

The Depeche Mode line was hilarious
I highly recommend the Japan-only sequel. Once you learn the interface, it's easy to play without knowing Japanese. It has a fantastic classical music soundtrack.
This game is known as Nectaris in Japan, and, as said, it has a sequel called Neo Nectaris for the PC engine CD, and a PS1 remake of the game as well as a PSN/XBLA title as well. This game also had a port on the Game Boy and DOS PCs.

It is pronounced differently than Hexagon with 'al' at the end, different syllable emphasis. Hex-AG-on-al is right. :)

Happy Console Gamer recently mentioned Military Madness as one of his favorite strategy games on console. He described it as a great introduction to the genre. I may have to check it out sometime!
this was the game, back in the day, that dad's, who didn't like video games, would play. I knew a few people with this game and it was always the same.

I had this back in the day, and it was sooooo much fun! This was the game that taught me how to play strategy games.

This was one of the last games I got before switching from the Turbo to the Genesis around 1990, and I think this was the only game I didn't get from Toys R Us & instead ordered it out of a Chips & Bits ad in EGM Magazine. I likely wouldn't have been interested in the game if not for the strong review scores in EGM Magazine. I later jumped at the chance to buy Jaleco's PS1 release of Nectaris.
Back when the Virtual Console was still kind of a novelty I bought this on there on an impulse and was pleasantly surprised by how good it was..

My uncle had a TG16 and this game was among his collection so I played quite a bit of it, but I also had a lot of cousins who also played when they visited him so it wasn't always easy to keep track of which password I should be using so I would often start over and just challenge myself to see how fast I could get back to where I was.
A day with a Drunk video is a day I'm going to have a great rest of my day

I played this at a childhood friend's house when I was a kid and owned it on my cell phone in high school. I also have the PSN game
i remember playing this when i was younger and just really not understanding what was going on. at some point i gave up because i just couldn't figure out what was going on. good memories though!

One of my favorite games of all time. You can also play the campaign as the enemy if you want which adds even more replayability. Neo Nectaris was also briefly released for iOS years ago but has since quit updating and no longer plays on current hardware :(

I was halfway expecting this to be a Marble Madness spinoff where you try to roll, I dunno, a cannonball down a maze and a bunch of tanks and trebuchets try and stop you.

Good review! I probably passed over this game at some point. The name "Military Madness" doesn't really stand out too much. I do love strategy games like Advance Wars and Fire Emblem, so might have to check this one out, too. It looks pretty fun! I did look up Depeche Mode's It Doesn't Matter Too and, yeah, I can kind of hear the similarities with this game's music. 😅

There is a Wiiware Military Madness under the name Nectaris Military Madness (similar name to the PS1) which is a 3D remake of the same game, except with online features
(As you expect it's not possible to get it unless through other means)
Also with that method that you mentioned you can also still play it online with other players

Nectaris is a cool series that I would like to see make a comeback someday. I wish Neo Nectaris had more ways to play English localizations that didn't just involve mobile devices.
I found this game at random and tinkered it for a bit before leaving it be.
I should give it another shot, maybe even make a unit guide for it.

It came out overseas on the NSO for the first time, and your audience may like this, Hebereke (Ufouria The Saga) for the NES and Ufouria 2 (Hebereke 2) as well~

the sequel is soooo good and includes the first game on the CD too. Its easy enough to play despite the menus being in japanese cause its just the same as the first game just cranked to 11
I never got to experience TG16 so I feel like I missed a gem here.
Would be nice if Earth Light and Earth Light: Luna Strike for SNES were translated to English as these games are designed by the same programmer as Military Madness.
