PC engine CD would be pretty cool to see you cover. I'm always on the look out for some really cool games. it's actually thanks to you that I have a new found appreciation for Saturn games and am praying for more saturn stuff to come back. I ended up buying physicals of saturn games to play them on my pc and also to even just listen to them as soundtracks.
Great video, I was lucky to have a friend with a TurboGrafx when it was new, it was so cool and different. Never seen any of these imports, though! PC Engine stuff is interesting and has a distinctively different flavor to it. Would love to see some Super Famicom and PCE CD videos, those are both amazing libraries
The PC Engine didn’t have much of a presence in Europe, so when the Wii came out with its Virtual Console, despite my decision to still only play old Nintendo and Sega games on their original hardware, I did decide to buy PC Engine games on Virtual Console and I had a blast! I did make an exception to my stance on Nintendo games when Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels came out on Virtual Console, and I did buy a few Neo Geo and Commodore 64 games on the same service too!
Can’t wait to try some of these! You should cover Bloody Wolf for the TG16. Such a great game that deserves a full playthrough. Thanks for all the great content!
I say this as an American who grew up with NES -> SNES/MD -> etc: I would *love* to see you take on the older PC systems that were more popular in Europe - Commodore 64, Amiga, ZX Spectrum, etc. I don't have any nostalgia for them, but as someone who kept up with EVERYthing on the systems I owned and have watched "hidden gems" videos to death, learning about systems that weren't popular over here is like entering a whole other world. I love videos from people like Kim Justice, but would really appreciate hearing the thoughts of someone else who has a similar gaming background to myself. Because who gives a shit what any specific RUclipsr personally has nostalgia for? It's like reading the preambles to food recipes where they talk about their Italian grandmas. I care about what tastes good or plays good, not self-absorbed meandering. Really, who sits there and says "Oh, you played such and such when you were a kid? That's sooo interesting."
Unfortunately as a veteran UK gamer, lots of those early home computers had an abundance of totally rubbish games, but variety is the spice of life I guess lol
We all knew you'd run out of SEGA things to cover :-( so the new content is appreciated. A cohesive list of arcade brawlers would be pretty cool to see next besides some of the 2 hour compilations I've almost watched, lol.
I think ive only ever played 2 pce/turbo games. Ive always wanted to play the turbo though... games look so unique and fun. Im kind of excited for the mini, even though i never had a turbo. Finally i can try it out.
It's really impressive what clever coders were able to do with judiciously placed sprites and raster tricks to overcome the single background layer to achieve those parallax effects
The UK was supposed to he getting the stripped down version of the PC Engine, no data bus to connect CD Drive to.. This would mean it could be sold £20-30 cheaper and arrive on UK shores in the Autumn of 1990 and sell for around £100. Never happened 😬
more games whaever on his collective was interesting like this for PC-Engine,only i don't really know what is different about this console and European version of this console? 😕
Coryoon was a disappointment for me. It's waaay too easy (I finished it at my first try!) and the overall art direction is a bit forgettable, the music in particular. One cool thing though is the parallax scrollings which are *very* impressive given the PC Engine limitations. Tatsujin was another disappointment. I LOVED the Mega Drive version and was eager to try the PC Engine one but the poor presentation, the garish colors and, even worse, the awful sound effects (I mean 11:50 really?!) made this a no no for me, even less at that price! It's a shame though because the gameplay is solid. Hana Taka Daka!? on the other hand, I always wanted to give this one a serious go and I'm also curious about Time Cruise II. Also here are some PC Engine games that I'd recommend in case you haven't played them already: -Space Invaders: Fukkatsu no Hi (which includes a port of the original Space Invaders as well as an arranged mode which is very cool) -Galaga 88 (great port for the system with nice use of the sound chip) -Parasol Stars (the third entry in the Bubble Bobble series. Not as good as Bubble Bobble or Rainbow Island but still very enjoyable) -Magical Chase (a shame about the price because it's easily one of the best PC Engine games. It was also ported to Windows and Game Boy Color though)
Are you sure people recommended Toilet Kids to you because they thought it was a good game? It's a pretty well known example of a "kusoge" game. It may be bad, but forgettable is hardly a word I'd use to describe a game that takes place entirely inside a toilet.
@@SegaLordX Just finished the video. Entertaining as usual and I always seem to learn about a new game that I never heard of before. Who knew that a poop game would make the list!
I played Toilet Kids on my retro handheld emulator and God, it is absolutely bizarre. I didn't really like it. It's so gross that it isn't even cute. And it's not a very good shoot 'em up. Coryoon actually is good though, even though it's hard as hell.
What do you think about the turbografx 16 mini coming out in march? I'm really interested in it and with m2 handling the emulation, i think its gonna be pretty good if not great.
I'm definitely getting one because the turbografx or pc engine never came out in my country, so it's completely foreign to me (or was, anyway, I've emulated a ton of games for it now, but yeah). It's just such a cool little console. I was blown away by some of the games, like I'd heard the raving over Rondo of Blood for years so I thought it'd probably be a bit overrated, but it actually lived up to its reputation. And the Bonk games on it are better than the SNES ones, things like that. I was even surprised how much I enjoyed the pinball games like Alien Crush, I never saw the point of video pinball games before
I own a Turbografx-16 with 5 games and its a very AWESOME system. 1. Neutopia 2. Keith Courage 3. Legendary Axe 2 4. Splatterhouse 5. Bonks Revenge But there is one problem, My god is this system very expensive to collect for, you will need to take out a second mortgage just to complete the collection That's why I can't wait for the Turbografx-16 mini and when it gets hacked, the whole library here I come Nice video BTW Sega Lord X
I have a lot of nostalgia for the PC Engine, even though I never even grew up with the console. i just find the graphics, music and its tiny size so charming. Glad you gave some of the less talked about games a little love. I hope you have more PCE content in the future!
I purchased a Core II about a week ago so this video is very timely. I've always desired a PC Engine but was just too busy with the Megadrive and SNES at the time.
@@SegaLordX Definitely, looking forward to playing them. I'm going to get a Super SD System 3 from Terraonion very soon as the price of games is ridiculous.
I disagree that modern games have no charm. Like someone else said, you’re looking in the wrong places. You won’t see charm from Ubisoft, EA or Activision.
6:10 "I've always meant to sit down and play this one." Hm... ok. I see what you did here... lol I don't know if Coryoon and Tatsujin should be called hidden gems. They are very well known, as you can see by the price of the games.
@@SegaLordX That makes sense. Well, thinking again, PC Engine was not that popular outside Japan. I mean... I live in Brazil and it's very rare to see someone who have played it. I wanted one when I was a kid and checked the games in the magazines, but I only bought when internet (and eBay) became a common thing. So Coryoon being a rare game... Yeah, the "?" in the title makes sense. It depends on the viewer experience.
The PC Engine version of Ninja Gaiden is gem, for sure. It's my favorite over Nintendo's, Sega Master System's, and most definitely over Atari's. The colors are nice, and the slightly different sound track always get stuck in my head.
I was really happy to have it in the PC-Engine mini. I’m glad I collect Japanese minis because the Japanese Famicom version of Ninja Gaiden actually has more reasonable difficulty.
Loved this video and what you said is so true - I've collected PCE stuff for years and yet still a couple of games in there that I hadn't heard of?? Didn't think this was possible - especially shooters on the platform. Always something to discover with this hobby!
I was scratching my head thinking, "Where's Space Harrier? After Burner? Altered Beast? Thunder Blade? Power Drift?" But then I realized these are games you never played. So you must have already played those hidden gems lol! :)
Parallax Scrolling was almost nonexistent on the TG16. I didn't find most of the games to be interesting at all. nothing stood out. Bright and colorful, but not very fun. You can find more games with transparency effects on the sega saturn than Parallax Scrolling backgrounds on the TG16. the TG16 just felt off when compared to the competition.
I've been playing a bunch of emulated games on my retro handheld (there's no way I could afford to amass all these rare games in physical form), and the PC Engine is the console that has grown on me the most by far. There's just something charming about the unique graphical style and sound designs of PC Engine games. I will definitely collect PC Engine games one day when I have actual income.
Absolutely love your channel. I personally think this is a GREAT format to provide material between the "flagship" retrospective videos. The Genesis has tons of titles (not even counting the MD ones) that I've simply never seen anyone analyze meaningfully but quickly! (because there's simply not enough time to watch a "let's play" or "play-through" about every title you're curious about). At a burn rate of 10 games at a time, you'd have years worth of great video material. Even just getting deeper-than-usual takes regarding the actual gameplay experience of some of the "established" Genesis titles (and franchises) would make for really fun episodes IMO. SNES and PS1 provide similarly deep wells to draw from.
Not a huge fan of Truxton on PCE. It's not bad or anything, but something just feels off about it to me, especially when comparing it to the Genesis version. Some of the color is nice, though. Even though there are loads of shooters on the system, one of the less popular ones I kind of like is Sinistron. Music loops way too fast, but it was still a fun game.
Hate the term 'hidden gems' ... so reminds me of Metal Jesus Rocks.... not a good thing lol TurboEverDrive is unfortunately the only way some people can play these on og hardware these days, just too rare and expensive for the likes of 1941 Counter Attack and Soldier Blade etc ...
I got the TG16 at launch and still have it, its a wonderful system. Military Madness marathons with my friends was awesome. Pizza, beer, and almost coming to blows because my friend Mike wouldn’t move his fucking Bisons! LOL
Oh hey Time Cruise, one of the few TG-16 games I owned as a kid. It wasn't amazing to me since I didn't like pinball all that much but it was worth a play every once in a while between all the Bonk, Air Zonk, Fantasy Zone and Dead Moon I played religiously.
This is good to refer to because I have every game made for it and the Turbo Grafx 16 also on retro pie emulation station(mini SNES edition/model).Not to mention many many more on many different retro consoles👍Love it
all the best PC engine and Turbographix games tend to be sooo expensive now that it's cheaper to get a retropie and load up a PC engine emulator on it and load onto it the roms of the Turbografx/PC-Engine games you want to play...
I live in japan right now and ive noticed there is a wide acceptance of poop games for kids. Aside from Oshiri tantei (butt detective) ive also seen a touchscreen game at the arcade where a little kid sits on the toilet shooting toilet paper at colorful turds. People love this stuff!
The Kung Fu is hardly an hidden gem....in every sense ! PS. Am only kidding as I know you meant the other ones in your video - some of those less common older titles are pricey - lol
I love your vids, but the thing I like this more is that you disclose how much the going rate is for a title on the retro market. I picked up Pacman World in a carboot sale here in the UK for £1, buried in a box, proper mint condition too... Its going for £20-£25 on eBay. Few more boot sales later... Well, a lot more bootsales later... Castlevania Chronicles cropped up... Tenner... I looked on eBay... Well over £100 last I checked! I've never had any others, but bought some great "If less worth valuable" titles on the way, but, you never know! ;) Hence why I like the inclusion of the going rate... You just never know when you might stumble on a bit of a rarity! :)
I have a decent chunk of the Turbo and PCE libraries. If you want a handful of others that may be fun to try, here goes: Kickball- it's literally kickball, but with characters from the Schbibinman games, seals, muscle men, etc. for teams. Download- awesome horizontal shooter with funny game over screens. Momotaro Kagetsuki- peach boy platformer from Hudson with a Wonder Boy feel. Bikkuriman World- a licensed remake of Wonder Boy in Monster Land Somer Assault/Mesopotamia-neat puzzle platformer about a battle slinky fighting the zodiac creatures. If you enjoy those, there's a lot more fun to be had.
I'm pretty jealous that people like you consider 8,16,32 bit era looking for games to discover. I was pretty active game developer when browser games were a thing. My latest creations can still be seen in my website (www.digitalraiders.com) I'm pretty fond of Anticlea: Princess of Thieves. I was inspired by some elements from stealth games and also puzzle games from Alundra.
I’ve got a couple for you to check out. Burning Angels, Final Soldier, Dragon Sabre, and the sequel to Cyber Cross, Cross Wiber Cyber Combat Police, which is waaaaaayy better than it’s predecessor. Also check out Metal Stoker and Alice in Wonderdream (pretty much anything made by FACE is worth taking a look at).
Some of my personal favorite PCE/TG-16 games Soldier Blade, Bloody Wolf, Ninja Spirit, Dracula X, Ys Book 1 and 2, Gate of Thunder, Lords of Thunder, Alien Crush, Air Zonk, Bonk's Revenge, Exile.
Legendary Axe is the best game ever made! Still have one of my TurboGrafx 16's and it still works! Bonks / Vigilante / Kieth Courage / Splatter House / Ninja Spirit / Tricky Kicks / Be Ball / Boxy Boy etc my favorites! 👍👍
Love the PC engine. I have a s-video modded Duo R with a 6 button controller. I use a everdrive for all the Hucard games but I have a pretty decent sized disc collection. I also buy games from pceworks as they are pretty much 1to1 clones of the real games but at much cheaper prices. Ok now I'm going to fire it up and play some :) yes do more pc engine related videos !!
I would love more episodes like this. I really like discovering games I've never played. I bought a PC Engine and FM Towns II for those purposes specifically and I have nothing but crazy fun when playing those systems. I am really into examining and playing games that I may not have grown up with and are not part of my childhood. To me it's just like buying recent games.
The PC engine was absolutely incredible. It came out in 87 and was meant to compete with the nes. It had better graphics than the genesis which came out two years after the turbo graphics and it arguably had better graphics than the snes, look at Rtype vs snes Suoer Rtype and street fighter 2 pc engine looked better. We didn’t get it til years later in the turbo graphics version, of it came out in 87 here it would have taken off and would possibly be around to this day making hardware what a shame it didn’t
Skweek is a port of Super Skweek, a french game that originated on the Atari ST (or maybe the Amiga) and was part of the line-up for the hyped European release of the PC Engine. And then they pretty much did not release it (only limited release in UK and grey import in France).
Coryoon is really tough? Must be a pro shooter player because I beat it first try no continues, yet a lot of other pce shooters kick my ass like blazing lasers (did eventually beat that tho). Toilet kids I just can't beat either
Don't know if my favorite game for the system wasn't here because it's considered as one of the best... but Gekibo (Gekisha boy) is an amazing original and fun game that normally doesn't get the credit it deserves.
6:01 Toilet Kids. It is a Japanese FPS that James AVGN Rolfe of @cinemassacre really needs to play and react to as it is his job to go back to past to play the shitty games that suck arse.
Toilet Kids is a shit ‘em up. Nobody asked for it and the game is totally unappealing and is gross, who wants feces in their games? The worst shooter on the PC Engine, simply put it as that.
Coryoon is the same developer as Air zonk! You can literally see some of the assets are the same! I cant wait to load all more roms on the TG16 Mini! I just hope they can hack it like the Genesis Mini where it can also play the CD games.
Atari Lynx... I never had that system and would love to see your no bs approach reviewing the system and some games for it. Love your videos and always put em on at the end of a long day to unwind and see some classic games on systems I grew up with.
6:09 BRO, I can't believe they actually animated the kid's twig & berries in 'toilet kids'! What were they thinking??😂😂😂

how come when people play old games they never play sports games?
Not a huge fan of Truxton on PCE. It's not bad or anything, but something just feels off about it to me, especially when comparing it to the Genesis version. Some of the color is nice, though.
Even though there are loads of shooters on the system, one of the less popular ones I kind of like is Sinistron. Music loops way too fast, but it was still a fun game.
How much were PC games back then?
Soldier blade was my favorite game on the system .. the pc engine was the gold mine of shmups
Lots of great shooters on PCE, and the HuCard format has some of the best games on the system.
Hate the term 'hidden gems' ... so reminds me of Metal Jesus Rocks.... not a good thing lol
TurboEverDrive is unfortunately the only way some people can play these on og hardware these days, just too rare and expensive for the likes of 1941 Counter Attack and Soldier Blade etc ...
I have Die Hard on order right now from Japan, Reminds me of a tamer Bloody Wolf
O man, not the hidden Gems. You are about to get a copyright strike from a certain POS for using his niche.
Great video! I'd love to see you continue this series on other consoles.
I've never had any others, but bought some great "If less worth valuable" titles on the way, but, you never know! ;)
Hence why I like the inclusion of the going rate... You just never know when you might stumble on a bit of a rarity! :)
I have a decent chunk of the Turbo and PCE libraries. If you want a handful of others that may be fun to try, here goes:
Kickball- it's literally kickball, but with characters from the Schbibinman games, seals, muscle men, etc. for teams.
Download- awesome horizontal shooter with funny game over screens.
Momotaro Kagetsuki- peach boy platformer from Hudson with a Wonder Boy feel.
Bikkuriman World- a licensed remake of Wonder Boy in Monster Land
Somer Assault/Mesopotamia-neat puzzle platformer about a battle slinky fighting the zodiac creatures.
If you enjoy those, there's a lot more fun to be had.
Hmmm...Ordyne! Not a 10/10 but I'd call it a hidden gem for it's graphics, 2 Player option, and uniqueness.
We need a modern day remake of Toilet Kids using the graphical power of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake engine.
I also liked a lot of the Sega ports on the PC Engine i.e. Outrun and After Burner II.
12:12 "Here's the 411 folks. Say some 'gangsta' is dissin' your fly girl. Just give 'em one of these... "
PCE is unique these days, have games that are 500 bucks that you ll never get but really good games that are cheap.
How about ‘10 more games for the PC Engine I’ve never played’ or for the CD-ROM system?
Coryoon is really tough? Must be a pro shooter player because I beat it first try no continues, yet a lot of other pce shooters kick my ass like blazing lasers (did eventually beat that tho). Toilet kids I just can't beat either
Don't know if my favorite game for the system wasn't here because it's considered as one of the best... but Gekibo (Gekisha boy) is an amazing original and fun game that normally doesn't get the credit it deserves.
Want it. Unique premise.
PC Engine business has made failed in outside Japan so many foreign are searching them in Japanese old video game market at all time.
Hyper Duel is so badass! My favorite Saturn game. I bought a reproduction of it on etsy. I love Guardian force too!
Sadly, the TG-16 being such a niche console here in North America, means a lot of games are just overpriced.... =\
(Ending) Nah, no, those are STILL in the expensive range when you can pick up games at LESS than $5 / a piece !!!!!!!!!
I recommend Photograph Boy. The bizarreness and vulgarity of Toilet Kids, but with actually fun gameplay.
