Just a small correction, Epidaurus is both a city in Greece and a village near Dubrovnik, today called Cavtat. That's where the original settlers came from, not Greece.
Just like there is a hotel in Cavtat called Epidaurus :)
Seriously what a big fail
Also six hundreds as sixteen hundreds would be 1600
Yes, big mistake there, the Greek settlement of Dalmatian Epidauros, later named Epidaurum by the Romans, was established in 6th century B.C., the 7th century refugees were from there, not the Peloponnese.
Everything is Greek , cope
The old city ways facing down modern weaponry : You don’t scare me!
But its awesome how the walls served their purpose even in the 90s!
Medieval walls protecting a city against an attack by a modern force numbering 7x more than your own is such a power move
After 2 years, you finally made another video about Croatia. Looking forward to this.

Another fun fact: Dubrovnik invented quaratine
@@thecoolnoobcraft no, Venice invented quarantine, in Ragusa aka dubrovnik
Fun fact: Dubrovnik is also first autonomous place to ban slavery in 1416. even tho Korčula (also in Croata, island) banned it 1214.

When I visited Dubrovnik I saw a plaque showing every single spot hit during the siege. There were so many...
Yeah you can say thanks to serbs and montenegrians that attacked Dubrovnik. Thank god they didn’t destroy it all
Was there in 2018. The place is absolutely amazing, the old town is very well preserved/restored, pretty much focused on tourists. Sounded like most of them were from English speaking countries, unlike in Split or Zadar - probably because scenes from The Game of Thrones were filmed in the old town and in the standalone fortress right next to the northern city walls. Managed to find the skull relic of St Stephen of Hungary in the Dominican monastery.
What’s it like mate going in 3 weeks for a week is it expensive? Is it an easy city to travel around?
@@jacknapier6668 Prices are similar to London. Loads of flats are on AirBnB/Booking, hotels all around, there's a Hilton almost right next to a gate of the old town. One even looks to the old harbour, I bet it's pricey. The city has public transport but buses might be packed, depending on the time of the day. It's not a large city so not impossible to walk from the far end to the centre but important to check the distance and elevation before booking. At the tourist info centre in the old town people can get discounts (incl. public transport, museums, the city wall, the other fortress, I think even some boat trips and the ferry), worth starting the first day there. Ferry goes to Split and Ancona (Italy). Damn... I want to go back again. :D
Spent 10 days in Dubrovnik this past July and loved it! Stunning! Great/funny video! You just got a new subscriber!
Wow you really went in depth in the history of Dubrovnik. This was an interesting video and I like this format.
Amazing as always!
I was in Dubrovnik nice country I want to visit it again YES I LOVE CROATIA 🇭🇷 ❤
as a dubrovnik citizen this was hilarious to watch (in a good way) i dont remember when was the last time i laughed when i saw šešelj in the 3 little pigs reference also there is another gate called buža in middle of the north wall,
Too many inaccuracies. Dubrovnik was not in Hungary, but in a country that was a personal union of Croatia and Hungary, in Croatian part. Dubrovnik was not a part of Ottoman Empire, but an independent country that paid high fee directly to Ottoman Sultan for freedom.
Dubrovnik was not in any personal union either, Dubrovnik and Dalmatia were part of Austria, better to say Austrian part of Austro-Hungary. Hungary had relatively small part of Croatian coast.
Also that personal union is called Hungary on every map or document.
@@biglebowsky6586 Dubrovnik was not always independent.
Regarding "Croatia or Hungary", Western sources are often superficial. Even Hungarian historiography emphasizes the heterogenous nature.
@@dtikvxcdgjbv7975 Well i know i didnt say it was always independandt.
@@TalonSlav Maybe in your dream. In every history class in RS or Serbia we have the lection called Dubrovnik Republic in which we learn how Dubrovnik was independent for centuries before the Austrian empire took it.
@@TalonSlav I literarly told you we do. In both high and midlle school there is lessons about Dubrovnik, from when it was founded to when it was taken by Napoleon (i made a mistake in first comment, Dubrovnik was taken first by Napoleon and only after his defeat by Austrian empire).
I visited Croatia in 2007 it was so fun i wish i was there.
Ragusa aka Dubrovnik was protected by the ottomans with there high taxes in Ragusa. So the sultan made sure Ragusa was always protected by other conquers or else the ottomans would step in and defend it. Tbh ottomans could’ve easily took over Dubrovnik but money feels better

hello simone again! you have very good videos. I am from Croatia who comes from Herzegovina. About 15% of Croats and Catholics, 30% of Orthodox Serbs and 45% of Bosnian Muslims live in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of the poorest countries in Europe and the reason is multiculturalism. Women who have historically had great multiculturalism, such as Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia, Albania, etc., are in much worse shape than homogeneous European countries such as Sweden, Denmark, Scotland, etc. The Balkan countries have been under the Turks for hundreds of years. Albania has been the longest and poorest country in Europe. Great Britain, Germany, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Switzerland are very rich and organized countries and they have never been under the Turks, is there a connection? I see it but the political left does not. Western European countries are rich in the Balkans and Eastern Europe precisely because they did not commit communism, Turkey and the Mongol conquests.

Half of my class does that. It's in pur neighbourhood.
Also Dubrovnik was not ruled by Ottoman Empire.
Dubrovnik was a tributary from 1382 to 1804 of the Ottoman Empire and paid an annual tribute to its sultan.
@@jamesdean1143 It does not matter. It was not ruled by Ottoman Empire. Dubrovnik was independent Christian Catholics Republic. That had its own borders. Its own army, money, laws and rulers. Ottoman Empire was Muslim Empire. In Republic of Dubrovnik Islam was ilegal as religion for example.
@@jamesdean1143 Also its from 1458. not 1382.
@@greengreeneya2102 fact that ottomans was charging hefty tax from dubrovnik to stay "independent" tells that dubrovnik was not so independent. why paying anything if you are independent? its just the way ottomans collected their paycheck, willingly or by force. why waste time energy and troops you can use on other place, those guys already giving what they ask...
@@zoki.to974It does not matter. Dubrovnik was independent. It had its own borders. Its own money. Its own laws. Its own language and religion. Dubrovnik was friend of all enemy countries of Ottoman Empire. Also Islam was banned and illegal in Dubrovnik Republic. Only Christian Catholics were allowed to live in Republic of Dubrovnik. Considering that Ottoman Empire was Muslim Empire that tells you everything. Also Dubrovnik Republic existed before Ottoman Empire and after.

Does the name of the main Street come from the Venetian language? "Stradòn" means "wide road", or is it just a coincidence?
No, it's not a coincidence, until 1358 Dubrovnik (Ragusa) was a Venetian vassal. Since Louis II Anjou of Hungary and Croatia won the war with Venice it switched to become his vassal in fact independent. Dubrovnik populace spoke a mix of Romance and Slavic languages so did the populace of Split, Zadar, Pula etc. It was a good mix. As the time went on, slavic (croatian) language prevailed since more and more people came to the cities. Still today some people in Dalmatia know italian with venetian accent and many customs remained. Local version of croatian is full of venetian loanwords.
@@masafelipe7033 Yes, the word came from venetian, since the it was the historical language of part of the population.
Also during the middle ages italian-speaking population (dalmatian + venetian) were still the majority of the population.
In Pola nobody used to speak croatian at that time, slavic speaking population came later in that city.
