Corona Old Boy maintenance and refill

  • In this video, I will show you how I maintain my butane lighter between refills and refill my butane lighter. The best kind of flints to use are corona flints. They come in this five pack with a brush. I'm going to use dunhill butane, but you can use any butane that is triple refined or better. The first step is to bleed the tank. I use the built in tamper as a screw driver to remove the fuel cap. Apply pressure to the refill valve to purge the lighter of any remaining fuel or air. This is the most important step in the process because it gets rid of all remaining propellant and fuel that could make the flame jump. When you clean it, you are going to want to make sure to get all build up off the sides. You are going to use a wet paper towel. Just make sure to get all of it. I use a pipe cleaner to get in hard to reach areas. I use the included brush to brush the flint wheel. Now remove the old flint. Then I use a pipe cleaner to clean the flint chamber. Now get a new flint. Drop it into the flint chamber and replace the pin. Flick the lighter a few times to give the new flint a good start. Press the refill tip downward into the center of the refill valve. Apply firm pressure for a few seconds. Replace the fuel cap and wait a few seconds for the gas to stabilize. When the lighter reaches room temperature it is safe to use. Thank you for watching and please subscribe. Questions and comments are appreciated.

    IMO, Corona Flints and Kiribi Flints are a bit softer than Zippo Flints thereby being easier on the striker wheel. Also IMO, this makes the lighter more reliable so they can light the first time every time.

    Suggestion on purging the valve - use a match - using the tamper can bend the valve.

      Better, use a plastic tube from an aerosol spray. It will slip over the valve and allow gas to escape through the tube. Or, you can drill a hole in the bottom of a used butane can and use the plastic nozzle on that.

    Thank you for watching. I just got off the phone with the great people at Music City Marketing in Nashville, TN. They informed me that they are currently servicing im Corona lighters from their new facility. Turnaround is running about "one week". I am producing a video to answer your question thoroughly. Thank you for being patient, the video will be out tomorrow.

    Won’t these lighters bleed if you just leave the valve open and not light? Maybe it takes longer that way?

    My flint still works but all of try sudden I can’t hear the butane coming out. I tried a needle and alcohol wipe on the hole where the butane comes up to no avail.

    Is it common to have to refill the Old boy every day? I'm lucky If I can get two pipes before needing to refill. I have bled it out and refilled with the same results.

    Regarding the butane, unlike other high end lighters I've not seen in any of the documentation included in my IM Corona Delgado that mentions anything about only using their brand butane or any high end stuff. Does that mean it's ok to use regular butane for their lighters without causing damage?
    Great vids btw.

      Future people looking for this answer: Never use Ronson, etc type butane. 3 x refined or more. Lower filtered butane is dirty and will cause more black carbon on cigars, etc and it will run a lot better on purified butane. Especially torches. I use Newport zero butane or whip its.

      Bro, every Bic lighter works as well xD
      The reason you buy such a lighter is the same reason you buy a nice watch.
      Its appreciation of the craftmanship and because its a nice accessoire.

    • @spanishfly7709
      @spanishfly7709 11 месяцев назад

      @TheCerbari no that's wrong Bic lighters have chemicals in it that alter the taste of cigars. When I started smoking cigars I didn't know that and they all were nasty but once I saw a video about Bic lighters and that refillable lighters and butane has no chemicals that alter the taste I tried it and it's true. Now I taste all the flavors of cigars and pipe tobacco. That's why I bought it, it has nothing to do with craftsmanship.

    Hey Mate, Just purchased the im corona old boy briar wood lighter, and its a beauty. However as soon as I received it the thing won't light. Keep in mind this is the first strike. Sparks fly as strike it but the gas doesn't seem to light the lighter? Any recommendations?

    • @PlanetLighter
      @PlanetLighter  8 лет назад

      +Cris Plunkett It could be airlocked. Try to bleed the tank(remove all gas) and refill it. Then make sure gas is flowing by adjusting the flame height until you hear a hiss or smell gas. Strike it and then adjust the flame back down to a normal level.

      That's one thing I never understood... Aren't you just wasting butane (and time) every time you bleed it out?

    • @666psicko
      @666psicko 2 года назад

      Thats interesting. I'll have to run some tests to see if my Corona old boy is the same way. My experience prior to my old boy was with butane cigar torch lighters, which you definitely have to bleed, or the pressure builds up and the lighter stops working until you bleed it then refill it. I just assumed the Old boy lighter was the same.

    • @666psicko
      @666psicko 2 года назад

      @@JohnSmith-tz7iy I do know with butane torch lighters you do have to bleed them, or the air pressure builds up until the lighter doesnt work. Ive been bleeding the old boy out of habit ever since I got it. whenI fill my lighter from here on out, I'm not going to bleed it and I'll see if I have the same issue. I'm going to weigh my lighter before and after and see if there is a change to how much fuel it takes if I dont bleed it.
