  • Hi Friends! Thought this could be quite a funny video - this is Seven Luxury Iconic items/brands that went from HOT TO NOT overnight. These are just my thoughts really on HOW it is that a product can be so highly covetable (with a waitlist) one minute, and the next it’s been forgotten about.
My 7 items are from Dior, Chanel, Bottega Veneta, Louis Vuitton, Gucci & Louboutin. Please do comment your options below on whether you think I’m totally wrong, if there’s anything you agree with, anything you think I’ve missed and how it might be that things go from hot to not so quick. Is it cleaver marketing to keep us buying? Or social media trends perhaps?*Ad

I don’t own any of the most popular bags. Instead I try to buy pieces I find beautiful and unique. I know some of my bags won’t even be remembered few years from now, but I will know their worth, after all they are my bags! Each bag is connected to a time and place I would like to remember 💜 So much love and respect to you 💜

But it is also about high street brands. Luxe goods are copied by anyone. That's why they have to introduce something completely new each season. I think later "high street brands" didn't copy that obvious and fast. Also with such great development of social media luxe bands have become something mentally affordable. All influencers have at least something from LV, Gucci, Bottega and all. So people look at them and see that such brands can be reached by everyone .. (my opinion)

  • @Samantha2209
    @Samantha2209 4 года назад +800

It will never stop fascinating me how the value of a thing depends on people’s opinion of how it looks. Those logo belts (as an example) don’t look any “worse” to me than they did years ago - they aren’t worn, damaged... they don’t look “cheap” or ill made, or even outlandish for that matter, yet ppl decided it wasn’t cool anymore... I wonder if these logo driven accessories keep us stuck mentally as teenagers, when “the cool kids” decided what your value was and laughed at you for not fitting in, despite there being nothing inherently wrong with you. Growing up, kids wanted the latest Barbie doll, then the latest Nokia cell phone, then the latest iPod... now the latest LV handbag? Hmm.

Oh and also I felt like it’s kinda like people need permission to like what they like haha...and we don’t! I personally don’t like the way some “top tier” designer bags look - like the Kelly. I hate the way it is so structured and flops awkwardly when you walk with it open. I also feel it’s too rigid when closed. But “you have to have it” now.... no thanks!

VanMax13 I’ve noticed personally that you can get a Saint Laurent bag (classic and black) with discount codes or during promos on Nordstrom, Farfetch, etc...Brands that are available in department stores don’t hold the same value as LV, Chanel and Hermes because you can only get those bags directly from their boutiques. I love your spirit and I believe in your general good intentions. I think you miss two very big points of view when considering all of this. 1) Luxury goods are created for wealthy people who do not need to consider value, trends or timelessness. Their target audience are those men and women who buy into the lifestyle of luxury. They change logos and design elements so that collectors can have something new to purchase. 2) Stylish people don't do fashion. They purchase what they like and style to fit their personal
They tend to buy opposite the trends but always capture your attention. Enjoy your purchases and use them as elements of style. Who cares if it's the "it" thing to wear. Wear what you love. Belts and bags are punctuation to your style sentence. Carry on and be well.

It’s so upsetting that we are always looking for the next “it thing.” It’s like we’re never happy with what we have. We keep trying to make ourselves happy with new materialistic items and trick ourselves in the moment of purchase and think “this is my last purchase,” or “now I have everything I want.” The idea of constantly trying to have the latest item is exhausting. It’s also a lie- we are filling a void that won’t be filled with materialistic items instead of finding the real problem. It makes me question my own taste. Am I not wearing my Gucci belt because as per social media it’s “overdone/overplayed,” or because it’s too much for my every day lifestyle? Maybe it’s age, but I’m getting to the point where I’m trying to listen to my gut and buy what I really like vs what I see on social media. I wish we can beat these designers at their own game and now buy the latest item as it comes out

Rachel Seun I agree, but I noticed that fashion is becoming more unique and people are wearing what they love. There’s a wide group of people wearing the tracksuit trends, people that stick to their jeans and a t-shirt, dressing feminine (dresses, skirts etc...) I do think fashion is a little diverse, or maybe because I just got into my thirties and in your 20’s everyone wanted to wear the specific trend vs. Now I feel we have to wear what suits our lifestyle and I’m loving it. Accessories on the other hand bc it’s a one size suits/fits all has targeted momentum

I thought the rounded look was more timeless. My last name at the time started with a G too so I liked that. I've since gotten married and that has changed. I got mine in the silver with a more durable leather it was one of the mens options. I think because mine was not gold it wasn't as over played. I understand the cynicism around the LV monogram however I must say that the stigma is very overblown. I visited Paris 4x last year with the monogram petite boîte chapeau + monogram horizon carry on suitcase (complete with the extra logo bag holder!) and received lovely compliments; it really accentuated my otherwise neutral colored and classic style wardrobe. I'm sure they're out there but I didn't see many passerby with fakes in the city at all.
I also wish people would stop pushing this false concept that "truly" affluent/old money people never wear/buy logos. Perhaps not head to toe, but absolutely most of us do. No one can expect any one accessory to do all the heavy lifting to elevate an otherwise gaudy outfit but paired with the right colors + silhouette, monogram is a classic. Buy what feels right.

In France it is illegal to wear fakes. Every now and then they even have campaigned on billboards in the big cities to warn tourists. Here in the Netherlands however you are not allowed to sell them but you can buy ( stupid, I know)and wear them so we are flooded with fake LV's. I was so disappointed I sold it and lost money on it and bought the classic flap and I LOVEEE the classic flap sooo darn much !

It's so funny, I was thinking of the Prada Cahier a while ago! When I first started my job, I really wanted it so much. Fast forward to now, where I completely forgot it was even in my wishlist in the first place LOL
Also while I love the LV Pont 9, I like it because to me it's a more subdued version of the LV logo- which is the complete opposite mindset of the customers that come into the store I work at. Most of the customers in my area that get Louis Vuitton get it to let everyone know that they can afford LV, so monogram gets the most traction. Leather gets the least amount of attention unless they really know their bags.

I'm in Canada and I don't have any issues with the LV monogram being too overworn/too many fakes. But I still adore it. There are a couple items that to me look staple and not too bad! However with so many recent reviews/unboxings on the quality definitely makes me question where my money is going. Of course, some items are an exception. I am so so so happy I never got the Chanel boy. To me it just was always too chunky in my opinion. There are a couple that look really nice though- I love the nude/pink coloured ones. Interesting that you spoke about how counterfeit bags can impact a luxury brands image! I find this subject really interesting and was actually considering doing a topic along these lines for my dissertation! Great video again! Also own a few of those items and wish I didn’t as some things go out of fashion too fast 😂😢 stay safe xx

That’s fashion for you! Whether it be high street, high end or designer, very few items become classics. Social media platforms push the quick here-today-gone-tomorrow aspect very much. LV monogrammed items are indeed suffering from the replica market, like Burberry circa 2000, but I still think they are a classic item which will stand the test of time. More people have more money to afford the real deal too, so they certainly are popular as an ‘entry level’ designer brand with the monogram print being canvas. Also, I really like the new Christian Dior logo where it reads CD front on or upside down. I think it should be a keeper in a way of the double CC of Chanel. It’s the Valentino one I’m no fan of. All I see is VD!

I have the LV Neverfull Monogram Canvas MM and the LV Felicie Pochette Monogram Empreinte Leather in black and love them. Both are practical and classic.

I have read an article a couple of days ago that the era of flashy brands like Gucci, Fendi, Dior etc... are gone because during crisis nobody wants to showing off and now rather everybody is going with the timeless pieces and brands such as Prada, Brunello Cucinelli and Hermes are rising now.

I still love the neverfull. I think it’s a really classic bag. Hope it does have a downturn as I want to buy a bargain one lol.
I just don’t think the boy bag is a classic.

Actually I love my monogram Louis Vuitton because it’s a casual look especially with what’s going on right now when all I do is work from home and go to the grocery store I definitely wouldn’t be wearing my Chanel and Hermès to the grocery store so to me Louis Vuitton works for me I take it out come home wipe it down and put it back in the closet

I completely agree. Plus my Neverfull doubles as a diaper bag & if you use a Hermes or Chanel wallet, it’s like your little luxury secret as you run the mundane errands in a cap🧢 & no makeup 💄

I love LV since I grew up with my mum using monogram speedys. Quality was insane back then, she still uses them.
I used to work as an intern for LVMH and my first luxury purchase for myself was the speedy.
I still love Monogram, I really don’t care about what people might think about my bags.
It’s all about memories and feelings for me when I buy a monogram bag :)

Love your channel! So Interesting to hear you talk about the Dior logo changes especially on the belts, i recently just purchased one from the mens collection with the original CD on it, however its reversible so one side is in the oblique pattern (which i am in love with btw) and the other is black leather. This way i could get double the use out of it because you can style two ways, i feel like you can really justify the price of because its two in one. And even if the oblique trend dies down because its huge right now i still have a classic black dior belt.
So Ladies make sure to check out the mens sections too as things can be cheaper and even more practical!!!

I’m with you on the oblique, I love it! I’m intrigued by the belt you mention, the men’s stuff is always better priced than the women’s 😭 I do think I prefer that classic CD logo style, I think at the end of the day, it’ll (hopefully) always be around, when the others might be phased out xx😘😘

I feel like the over advertising of logo belts killed it. This is just my point of view, by the way. I think any fashion that is involved in music industry or frequently worn by instagrammers is a fast fashion.
Gucci belt was actually a title of the hip hop song in Thailand and although I don’t live there, I heard it all the time. To me Gucci belt is part of the culture now (like gold teeth, chain necklaces and stuffs) and a lot of “thinking they’re cool” kids I know all own them. They’re just not special anymore.
Please don’t hate me about my comment :/

I think they really feed into “flex” and “hyper beast” type culture which as a man is frustrating because I see things I like all the time being turned into a “how to look like a dick” starter pack.

I guess people that feel his way never liked the belt, but the status symbol that it was. So then, what makes you any different than the hip-hop community? If you suddenly don't think something looks classy simply because many people that you perceive as "beneath you" wear it, them you never thought it was classy and you're just a well paid sheep. If you have to be told what's classy based solely upon exclusively, then you have no sense of class yourself.

    • @thisisnotpimwee
      @thisisnotpimwee 4 года назад

@Cole Bien I find your comment is pretty harsh. First of all, I do not think that in the sense of “people who are beneath me” own it and I’m not sure which part of my comment can be implied to it. I think that the belt is beautiful and at one point I wanted to buy one but decided not to because it wouldn’t work with my style and I wouldn’t get my money worth. Also I’m not that well paid and I do take a lot of time before I buy any designer piece, hence the well paid sheep you said.
My point was, at least in my country or to a lot of people I know, the belt has become somewhat a piece that show the status and I disagree with it. Teens I know buy it because the rapper has it not because they really like the piece. They want to show it off. People who enjoy it can wear it and style it how they love to. When I see this piece I think of both ways: the nice way fashion lovers like to include the brand they love in their outfit, and teens I know spending their first saving money and going around showing people their belt and that doesn’t look cool or classy to me.
To each their own. You might be lucky not to see someone silly doing that but I saw that more than enough and that made me not want to buy the piece to join the club.

Great Video Sophie! First time commenter here - love your content especially the career related stuff! I so far have 2 designer handbags.. the Prada Cahier Astrology bag (black velvet exactly as you showed) was actually my second designer bag and I love it! I bought it second hand (I couldn't afford it when it first came out as I was at uni) - I got it 6 months in to my grad job - it reminds me to dream and work for what I want (cringe!). Although I agree with you that when buying luxury you should always consider longevity and the current 'it' bag wont always be the current 'it' bag, most importantly - buy something you love!!! Of course everyones opinion is valid and if always buying in to latest season or sticking to the true classics makes you happy go for it!!
