To stop the check engine light from turning on again, make sure to actually fix the problem before resetting it! If this is not done, and the ECU detects the problem again on two separate trips, the check engine light will turn back on again.
If you're looking to reset the light to pass an emission test, this procedure will NOT work, because emission related codes are stored permanently until the ECU decides the problem has been fixed! Trying to reset the light and then going for an emission test right away will not work!!
