Fuel tank cap. My Mercedes check engine light would come on intermittently. I noticed it was after adding fuel. Stopped car, turned off engine, removed fuel tank cap then returned it to tank insert with three good clicks. Check engine light would stay off. I finally purchased a replacement fuel cap. Car runs better than ever. Check for faulty fuel tank cap.

Check engine light on. I have a 96 Chrysler Intrepid, 3.3 litre v6, automatic. THAT, engine light is on, ever since i got it 4 years ago. NOTHING wrong with the engine, starts every time. Tranny in excellent condition. I only replaced the water pump, and starter , about a year ago, 1 1/2 yrs ago for starter. Must be a faulty sensor, somewhere......oh well. 310,000 on it, and only ' sweats ' a bit of oil, on the front seal. Goes about 5,000 km on a litre, of oil ; at oil / filter change time. I had a 1996 Mazda 626, after about 100,000 kms. the engine light came on at which time I took it to the dealer who replaced multiple fuel related products. Still the light remained on, over the next 125,000 kms I had the transmission and engine rebuilt and still the light persisted. When I sold the car at 225,000 kms. the light was still on truly one of the most useless inventions ever installed in an automobile.

The system was made with very good intentions and is good in lots of cases but sometimes there's just a glitch or a combination of certain things that seem like they can't be fixed. Me too. It occasionally takes a break and shuts off for a few days then comes back. Just get an inexpensive obdII tester and clear the code. You can get rid of it for a little while.
Can anyone tell me what genius thought it was a good idea to have the "check engine" light come on for very minor issues? That doesnt seem to make a lot of sense.
I have seen it happen after filling up with the fuel. Many times the Breakdown service people just reset the warning and never come backs. PLEASE BEWARE IT COULD BE A MAJOR ISSUE OR IMPENDING BREAK DOWN SO DON’T IGNORE IT.
Well explained if the car has not changed it driving performance in any way its usually ok to carry on, most of the time its to do with fuel admissions, years ago we didn't have these warning lights apart from oil, battery ect, now its to hopefully stop breakdowns in advance, get the nearest garage to plug in there mini computer to tell you what the problem is.
I was ( been) driving around 2 years or more with a check engine light code P0500 I read from several comments that they had replaced more than once the VSS vehicle speedometer sensor and their problems would continue.... My advice is to take pictures before going for repairs,etc and do not leave without again checking. I engraved a replaced part, paid 72 for a new one and I arrived home with my engraved part. I requested what I had paid for and I got it because i had my evidence (my pictures). Most mechanics do not care because their bosses back them up into doing wrong things. I forgot my own advice days ago with a new battery. I forgot to check the installation the young guy for forcing into place... next day I saw smoke from starter plus the negative connector had melted and got embedded on the battery surface. Car had to be towed Today I also noticed the positive cable shorted, a half an inch hole showing wires. Made by the installer and his difficulty to hook up the battery firmly to its based? If I had looked I could have caught his unprofessional work to avoid today the cost of new parts plus repairs. We cannot trust mechanics or parts shop personnel. We are on our own and appreciative of videos like this and all others that try to help us.. Many thanks.
@@Mod-rw9cw FL does not have the same regulations as CA. By now though, the instr. panel does not light up during the day, only at night. Neither the odometer showed up the past weeks when it was so cold (35-40F). So, I am being very negligent but as soon as I feel healthier I will be taking it to the doc for engine oil and gasket, radiator fluid, transmission fluid and maybe, also, power steering fluid replacements. If all that is too costly,i may purchase another car.(Toyota, of course).

I am trying to calculate the mileage for Jan 4 2023 .... I drive around 4K per year. i had to use my bike when i had to place my 3rd starter ( the first one was still good .... some mechanics lie, you know) and ... the latest mechanic did what he wanted in my car. Being old now, I am too tired to take more people to court.
As long as the car runs OK my wife's solution works quite well. A piece of black electrical tape over the "CHECK ENGINE!" light solves the problem without enriching a mechanic.
Mine too. My check engine light comes on and will stay on for a few days to weeks then shut off at start up. It will stay off, usually for a couple of days of regular use then suddenly come on. This has been going on for nearly three years and no major issues or performance issues have arisen.

Most cars are still 100% mechanical machines. Almost always the problem that result in the engine light going on is typically due to a bad sensor. I have driven my 2002 Rav4 for the last 5~6 years with the check-engine light on and have had zero problems to date. Many vehicles today have their vehicle check engine light come on simply because the windshield washer reservoir is low on fluid. This is basically done by automotive manufacturers so that any person who lacks basic automotive background will think there is a major problem and take their car into a garage for further diagnosing which in turn will get screwed over by thieving money hungry lying mechanics. Great well thought out advice and good use of common sense is the key to determining if there is a major problem under the hood. Excellent video and advice for anyone owning a car 2000 or newer.

I had somewhat a similar problem (check engine, epc and tcs light) on my car, it was a crankcase breather problem. Hi, thanks for watching and for the nice comment! The O2 sensor problem can be tricky (from personal experience). It will be triggered by low-quality fuel, a minor air leak, a bad fuel cap, or else and it's not cheap to replace, in most cases. Just make sure it is the actual problem before replacing it. These problems tend to be money pits. All the best to you.
Yes I had the same problem, I have 2013 LTZ Holden Captiva my engine light came on I revered to my manual it said to drive my car at 2000 revs for 20 minutes for approx 20 klm as its a Diesel no problem engine light went out.
I drove with my check engine light on for at most like 1 day only. It was only because I didn’t have time to see my mechanic that day. I also checked the code and it was running rich. The PCV valve just needed to be changed out. Easily done. I wouldn’t drive on a check engine light if it was something far more serious.

Hi Elle and thanks for watching! A mechanic will certainly use an OBD tool and probably also make a visual inspection, especially if that sound is always present. Regarding seeing the error codes, every garage has a policy of its own so wouldn't know what to say. Ask, it won't hurt anybody. Also, try asking for a cost estimate before starting the repair. Hope this helps. You can also buy a pretty cheap OBD scanner and read the error codes on your own. We've made s separate video and review on that topic, you can take a look and see.
@@elle5031 I used to get this periodically in my old Accord. My solution to this was to stop the car, turn it off and take the key out. It then restarted the car and everything was normal. It happens in Hondas. The reason? Possibly your car didn't down-shift back to 1st gear when you stopped and it's stuck in 3rd gear. A flashing "D" means that the car is not going to gear up or down while driving. It's odd, but if you don't mind turning off the car and then restarting it whenever it happens (Hopefully minimally), you can drive for years. It's just one of those Honda glitches!

We are on our way home from france to germany and after 2 hrs of driving, we got this check engine light (yellow). Then a warning light. We got so concerned because we are still 750km from our home. We called ADAC and they said they will come asap. They said, they will pick up our car and bring it to the repair shop. Maybe in 3 working days, we can have our car. 😭So we booked a hotel for a night. We waited and waited for ADAC. After five hours they said they will just pick our car on monday to have it "checked up". That means we have to stay in the hotel for days. We probably will drive tomorrow and hope our car will work just fine. So stressful, especially with three kids. I thought ADAC wont let u down, I'm wrong.

Hi, been driving my Mercedes W203 for more than half a year now, no issues , but today after I pumped in some petrol, I’ve driven about 10 mins down the road when the check engine light came on , the car runs as good as it has run before , no signs of oil leaks on the engine or even underneath, no smoke , no strange noises, should I get it off to a mechanic or wait a few days and see what’s going on? Hi and thanks for watching! I would definitely recommend waiting for a few days. If the check engine light continues appearing, then get an error code with an OBD tool. You can also check if the gas tank cap is properly tightened and if the seal on it is OK. Also, lower fuel quality is sometimes the issue.
My check engine light didnt come on but my car shudders and bucks.i can make it run smoother if i put it in sport mode..it turns out to be one of 2 oxygen sensors which i dont have the money to fix right now. It passed smog because it wasnt both sensors but it must be fixed by next year. This is a huge burden for s retured couple but i will have to find a way. I hope i dont burn out the catalytic converter in the meantime.

Without even watching 15 seconds, yes you can. The thing is you need to know what the code is, and what it affects. Mine and my wife's '04 durango has a CEL for the powersteering (which is basically fluid operated, but it does have a sensor that reads and measures a certain parameter). That said, if you have a misfire or anything that affects the actual performance of the vehicle, I'd highly recommend fixing it before actually driving it at all. Just my $0.02. :)
You can always disconnect the battery to reset the computer.If the cars runs normal a reset probly will take care of it.I had that happen last week.I also fix my own car so I'm well versed in it.
2003 Toyota Matrix XR - Changed coils and plugs. Autozone scanner said #4 mis fire prior. Car still shuts down soon after driving. Check engine light is on. Scanner also had a cat cov code.
Hi and thanks for watching! Well, that seems to be a tough one. Even if there was a misfire it shouldn't shut down totally but work unevenly, (not on all cylinders). The check engine light and cat code probably all come from the bad combustion. Did you check the connections to the ignition coils? Is there input to all the coils? May i ask , what is the problems of engine shot down when all mechanical parts of car in Good conditions, the fuels transfer to the engine correctly but when we start the engine it will be shout down. After some time the mechanic said it's a fuse problem and he fixed for a couple of days and then the problems started and also he fixed the second time after that the engine lights on when we drive faster or more accelerate but the horse power of the engine is not changed . Hi and thanks for watching! I'm sorry but I didn't really understand the problem. But from what I did, you should focus on the cause of the fuse problem. If it burns out all the time, then you should check for a short circuit, bad contact, or else. This may be also related to the problem with the lights. Check if you have any aftermarket devices installed for instance. Toyota's are quality cars and rarely have these kinds of problems. Hope this helps although I doubt it :-).
Yes you can unless it's flashing when it's flashing you'll actually feel something going on with your car but check engine lights come on for many reasons ignore that car shield commercial once your engine light comes on game over that's why they're generating billions of dollars exploiting people your check engine light comes on it's usually something minor I mean look into it but don't panic my check engine light's been solid for 3 years used to go away now it's solid I fixed everything now it's a knock sensor because my motor mounts are bad I'm not going to replace them it's too much work there's two that are bad but my experience with check engine lights I've been able to drive my car even if I find out what the problem is could be a loose gas cap loose wire could be warning of something to come could be anything all right good luck
A check engine light is usually an exhaust problem like a Catalytic converter, an O2 Sensor that needs to be replace, or it could be the spark plugs. It can even be the module ECM

Hi and thanks for watching. It could be a sensor, but (and you've probably already done this) check the error code you get when you connect the OBD tool. You'll get a better idea of what the problem or problems may be.
I bought a Maruti Ecco star BS VI, 5 seater CNG 2020. Within a year during Covid 19, the vehicle starting and pick-up problems. The company had installed a defective silencer, catalyt is not found in silencer. Rather there was steel wool. The compay assured to replace it. But, failed to do so. Later, threatened me saying, the engine will get ceased, need to replace the silencer immediately. Its costs around 80,000/- this is a huge amount. (I also had bad experience of technicians in dealer service stations not identifying problems, over charging, billing for spares & consumables not used. Stoped going to company service center. Driving with light on for more than two years Maruti Ecco, I have no problem.

Hello, i have a peugeot 307 petrol 1.6 109 pk and my car has a check engine light problem it gives the code P0341 camshaft position sensor fault. But the problem is my car doesnt have this sensor installed and i had 2 times where i placed the tank cap the other way that the check engine light goes off i dont know what to do i went to a dealer to change the throttle body house the multibelt and other stuff but still this light is coming on i spend over 1000 euros already can you help out ?

@@Reborn1561 sorry for the late response. You can buy a temporary replacement cap which is good enough but buying the original one would be best. I don't know if there's a good replacement part (there should be, for most cars there is) or if you have to buy the original one. Best take a look first since the original parts from the dealerships tend to be pricey.
I took the instrument panel off my Peugeot 2litre turbo diesel which runs 100% ok and took out the bulb. No check engine light now and still running 100%.

Own three Toyota vehicles. At one time or another check engine light came on. On two of them I was able to correct the problem by reconnecting one wire chewed through by rodents.Now the light came on my Toy Tacoma truck. Checker showed anti knock on hi bank 2. Truck performs fine but in order to get to the area to fix the wire you have to disassemble the entire top of the 4Liter engine. It will cost $1500 to correct the problem. Could I pass the strict California emission smog check with the light on? Hate to spend the cash on a 2005 vehicle even though it has less than 36000 miles on the odometer.
Hi, and thanks for watching! To be honest I don't know. But what I do know is that the check engine light doesn't come only for emission problems. It appears for electric and other problems also. My point is that the emissions may be OK although the check engine light is on. I've seen cases like these before. Hope this helps.

I had a check engine light on. Went to the Toyota Service Centre twice and was told the Charcoal Canister was faulty which cost me $1200 Canadian plus $150 for diagnosis. After one month engine light came on again. Went to the dealer and was told that the Catalytic converter (code P0420) needed to be replaced and the estimated cost $3000 Canadian. Went to Canadian tire and bought Cat Cleaner and guess what engine light was gone. Will use Catcleaner for every 3 months for 1 year and will see what happens.
My Suzuki Swift 1.5 engine light was burning and garage found out that my katalysator sensor was defect. I drove with it 2.200km back to my country and my own garage repaired it. Nothing wrong with the engine.

Been 7 months for me. Fixed the spark plugs. Came back after a week. No weird noises and drives fine.

As long as the car runs OK my wife's solution works quite well. A piece of black electrical tape over the "CHECK ENGINE!" light solves the problem without enriching a mechanic.

Mine too. My check engine light comes on and will stay on for a few days to weeks then shut off at start up. It will stay off, usually for a couple of days of regular use then suddenly come on. This has been going on for nearly three years and no major issues or performance issues have arisen.

Most cars are still 100% mechanical machines. Almost always the problem that result in the engine light going on is typically due to a bad sensor.
I have driven my 2002 Rav4 for the last 5~6 years with the check-engine light on and have had zero problems to date.
Many vehicles today have their vehicle check engine light come on simply because the windshield washer reservoir is low on fluid. This is basically done by automotive manufacturers so that any person who lacks basic automotive background will think there is a major problem and take their car into a garage for further diagnosing which in turn will get screwed over by thieving money hungry lying mechanics.
Great well thought out advice and good use of common sense is the key to determining if there is a major problem under the hood.

Best use an OBD tool and check what the error code is.
If I was in your place, I would wait a bit for the problem to start showing up more frequently.
I had somewhat a similar problem (check engine, epc and tcs light) on my car, it was a crankcase breather problem.

The O2 sensor problem can be tricky (from personal experience). It will be triggered by low-quality fuel, a minor air leak, a bad fuel cap, or else and it's not cheap to replace, in most cases.
Just make sure it is the actual problem before replacing it. These problems tend to be money pits.

Yes I had the same problem, I have 2013 LTZ Holden Captiva my engine light came on I revered to my manual it said to drive my car at 2000 revs for 20 minutes for approx 20 klm as its a Diesel no problem engine light went out.

I drove with my check engine light on for at most like 1 day only. It was only because I didn’t have time to see my mechanic that day. I also checked the code and it was running rich. The PCV valve just needed to be changed out. Easily done. I wouldn’t drive on a check engine light if it was something far more serious.

Got a 2000 Rav4. The light has been on for 8 years.... My wife has a subaru Impreza. The light also has been on for about the same.... Been through all Mot's..... No problem....... I'm a mechanic..... BULLSHIT.

A mechanic will certainly use an OBD tool and probably also make a visual inspection, especially if that sound is always present.
Regarding seeing the error codes, every garage has a policy of its own so wouldn't know what to say.
Ask, it won't hurt anybody.
Also, try asking for a cost estimate before starting the repair.
Hope this helps. You can also buy a pretty cheap OBD scanner and read the error codes on your own.

@@elle5031 I used to get this periodically in my old Accord. My solution to this was to stop the car, turn it off and take the key out. It then restarted the car and everything was normal. It happens in Hondas. The reason? Possibly your car didn't down-shift back to 1st gear when you stopped and it's stuck in 3rd gear. A flashing "D" means that the car is not going to gear up or down while driving. It's odd, but if you don't mind turning off the car and then restarting it whenever it happens (Hopefully minimally), you can drive for years. It's just one of those Honda glitches!

Don't know what to say, it's not there for nothing but the sad truth is that solving the problem (in lots of cases) takes times takes time and money only for the end result to be the same.

We are on our way home from france to germany and after 2 hrs of driving, we got this check engine light (yellow). Then a warning light. We got so concerned because we are still 750km from our home. We called ADAC and they said they will come asap. They said, they will pick up our car and bring it to the repair shop. Maybe in 3 working days, we can have our car. 😭So we booked a hotel for a night. We waited and waited for ADAC. After five hours they said they will just pick our car on monday to have it "checked up". That means we have to stay in the hotel for days. We probably will drive tomorrow and hope our car will work just fine. So stressful, especially with three kids. I thought ADAC wont let u down, I'm wrong.

Hi, been driving my Mercedes W203 for more than half a year now, no issues , but today after I pumped in some petrol, I’ve driven about 10 mins down the road when the check engine light came on , the car runs as good as it has run before , no signs of oil leaks on the engine or even underneath, no smoke , no strange noises, should I get it off to a mechanic or wait a few days and see what’s going on? I would definitely recommend waiting for a few days. If the check engine light continues appearing, then get an error code with an OBD tool.
You can also check if the gas tank cap is properly tightened and if the seal on it is OK.
Also, lower fuel quality is sometimes the issue.
My check engine light didnt come on but my car shudders and bucks.i can make it run smoother if i put it in sport mode..it turns out to be one of 2 oxygen sensors which i dont have the money to fix right now. It passed smog because it wasnt both sensors but it must be fixed by next year. This is a huge burden for s retured couple but i will have to find a way. I hope i dont burn out the catalytic converter in the meantime.

9 times out of 10 it is a dickie O2 sensor. Modern cars are full of the bloody things. Just a bit of dirt will set them off.

Without even watching 15 seconds, yes you can. The thing is you need to know what the code is, and what it affects. Mine and my wife's '04 durango has a CEL for the powersteering (which is basically fluid operated, but it does have a sensor that reads and measures a certain parameter). That said, if you have a misfire or anything that affects the actual performance of the vehicle, I'd highly recommend fixing it before actually driving it at all. Just my $0.02. :)

You can always disconnect the battery to reset the computer.If the cars runs normal a reset probly will take care of it.I had that happen last week.I also fix my own car so I'm well versed in it.

2003 Toyota Matrix XR - Changed coils and plugs. Autozone scanner said #4 mis fire prior. Car still shuts down soon after driving. Check engine light is on. Scanner also had a cat cov code.

Well, that seems to be a tough one. Even if there was a misfire it shouldn't shut down totally but work unevenly, (not on all cylinders).
The check engine light and cat code probably all come from the bad combustion.
Did you check the connections to the ignition coils? Is there input to all the coils?

May i ask , what is the problems of engine shot down when all mechanical parts of car in Good conditions, the fuels transfer to the engine correctly but when we start the engine it will be shout down. After some time the mechanic said it's a fuse problem and he fixed for a couple of days and then the problems started and also he fixed the second time after that the engine lights on when we drive faster or more accelerate but the horse power of the engine is not changed . I'm sorry but I didn't really understand the problem. But from what I did, you should focus on the cause of the fuse problem.
If it burns out all the time, then you should check for a short circuit, bad contact, or else.
This may be also related to the problem with the lights.
Check if you have any aftermarket devices installed for instance. Toyota's are quality cars and rarely have these kinds of problems.

Yes you can unless it's flashing when it's flashing you'll actually feel something going on with your car but check engine lights come on for many reasons ignore that car shield commercial once your engine light comes on game over that's why they're generating billions of dollars exploiting people your check engine light comes on it's usually something minor I mean look into it but don't panic my check engine light's been solid for 3 years used to go away now it's solid I fixed everything now it's a knock sensor because my motor mounts are bad I'm not going to replace them it's too much work there's two that are bad but my experience with check engine lights I've been able to drive my car even if I find out what the problem is could be a loose gas cap loose wire could be warning of something to come could be anything all right good luck

A check engine light is usually an exhaust problem like a Catalytic converter, an O2 Sensor that needs to be replace, or it could be the spark plugs. It can even be the module ECM

Have a engine malfunction on my 08 focus after a battery change 6 years ago drives a treat but can't clear this warning even with obd possibly a sensor blown

It could be a sensor, but (and you've probably already done this) check the error code you get when you connect the OBD tool.
You'll get a better idea of what the problem or problems may be.

I bought a Maruti Ecco star BS VI, 5 seater CNG 2020.
Within a year during Covid 19, the vehicle starting and pick-up problems.
The company had installed a defective silencer, catalyt is not found in silencer. Rather there was steel wool. The compay assured to replace it. But, failed to do so.
Later, threatened me saying, the engine will get ceased, need to replace the silencer immediately. Its costs around 80,000/- this is a huge amount. (I also had bad experience of technicians in dealer service stations not identifying problems, over charging, billing for spares & consumables not used.
Stoped going to company service center.
Driving with light on for more than two years Maruti Ecco, I have no problem.
I been there check engine light means something red was on once smelled smoke parked it changed plugs light off back on again mechanic said sensor was bad second time yellow leaking antifreeze small leak had to get new radiator the light was telling me problem in cooling system had to keep putting antifreeze in it was overheating could of blew engine stay on top of this it means something take it to the mechanic find out why it's on or u will get stuck on road
Before you continue driving with the engine light on, check that the engine oil is good , cuz this issue cost me my car engine !!!

Hello, i have a peugeot 307 petrol 1.6 109 pk and my car has a check engine light problem it gives the code P0341 camshaft position sensor fault. But the problem is my car doesnt have this sensor installed and i had 2 times where i placed the tank cap the other way that the check engine light goes off i dont know what to do i went to a dealer to change the throttle body house the multibelt and other stuff but still this light is coming on i spend over 1000 euros already can you help out ?

A tough one to solve and this advice probably won't help but try to check for any vacuum or air leaks.
Also, check the fuel lines for any leaks and the return hose.
@@DespairRepair well it would help cause i think its the tank cap but i dont know for sure cause everytime i replace the tank cap the motormanagement light goes of but this tank cap is with a key and its with my original car key can i replace that cap with another cap or do i need to go to a peugeot dealer for that ?

You can buy a temporary replacement cap which is good enough but buying the original one would be best.
I don't know if there's a good replacement part (there should be, for most cars there is) or if you have to buy the original one.
Best take a look first since the original parts from the dealerships tend to be pricey.

Own three Toyota vehicles. At one time or another check engine light came on. On two of them I was able to correct the problem by reconnecting one wire chewed through by rodents.Now the light came on my Toy Tacoma truck. Checker showed anti knock on hi bank 2. Truck performs fine but in order to get to the area to fix the wire you have to disassemble the entire top of the 4Liter engine. It will cost $1500 to correct the problem.
Could I pass the strict California emission smog check with the light on? Hate to spend the cash on a 2005 vehicle even though it has less than 36000 miles on the odometer.

To be honest I don't know. But what I do know is that the check engine light doesn't come only for emission problems. It appears for electric and other problems also.
My point is that the emissions may be OK although the check engine light is on.
I've seen cases like these before.

I had a check engine light on. Went to the Toyota Service Centre twice and was told the Charcoal Canister was faulty which cost me $1200 Canadian plus $150 for diagnosis. After one month engine light came on again. Went to the dealer and was told that the Catalytic converter (code P0420) needed to be replaced and the estimated cost $3000 Canadian. Went to Canadian tire and bought Cat Cleaner and guess what engine light was gone. Will use Catcleaner for every 3 months for 1 year and will see what happens.
