The Fouling Fijians really sabotaged any chance they had with penalties. Ireland meanwhile had much better discipline. Shows you how critical that part of the game is.
When Davidson called for the TMO she said i have grounded short and a knock on, which was from the fiji grounding it and rolling it forward a bit on the ground who any scrumhalf knows is a knock on
I thought she had a decent enough game, although I do wonder about the experienced Irish legends saying that Prendergast should have had red. Sounds like she got that one wrong.
@RossoVerdeNero personally, I thought it was a yellow. However, she can't be faulted. She gave the yellow with an off-field review. Upon review, it remained a yellow. She did everything exactly right.
I think the Prendergast/Crowley debate is similar to the England Smith/Smith debate. Why not both? They're both young, talented and simply offer something different. Neither one is better than the other imo, just different styles.
That’s the issue with out half’s though, it’s hard to expect every other player in the back line to totally change out their style to suit during the game or week to week.
Crowley currently has bigger games under his belt including a URC final and a regular for Munster. As a Leinster fan, Prendergast needs is not at that level yet.
My thoughts on Izuchukwu: not sure what to make of it. He did OK and he didn't make any significant mistakes, so he didn't do himself any harm. But for the most part, the game just seemed to pass him by. I was getting frustrated by his lack of involvement as he has been a major ball carrier for Ulster, but then the light dawned: whether by design or not, the ball was hardly ever given to him to carry. Was this again, a subconscious result of the experienced players preferring to stick to the guys they normally play with? His carry stats will probably look poor, but it's hardly his fault if he's never picked out.
I think he played reasonably well in his first international, I would hope he is happy with his performance. I don't think that the coaching team would feed him to the wolves, by asking him to make the hard yards. The X factor is always there & available. I think he needs to keep improving on the basics to get into the matchday squad. There are some serious athletes competing for a few places (including Lions, world player of the year nominees, Ryan Baird, etc.). Hopefully he keeps improving & has many more days in Green.
6:14 his name is Michael D Higgins, he's our president of the Leprechauns. It wasn't a struggling Fijian side trying to play, its a matter that Ireland didn't allow them to play. Sam was class, the passing, 1, 2's and cross field kicks, bringing the ball to the line and slip. Making and taking tackles when A LOT of people said he wouldn't be able to.
First time for new players. Just remember Johnny Sexton wasn’t really good on his Ireland exposure. Players will be phased when playing international rugby. What a brilliant place to do it. Well done AF! Ageing Ireland team refresh absolutely needed.
@@x-latetv-x6816atrocious give me a break , take your head out of your arse, some forward passes “just” but some sublime passing. I suppose you think you get to score 8 tries passing atrociously 😂😂
@ yes they did but equally they scored 8 tries with some sublime passing. There was a totally different Irish team out there and many early injuries lots of position changes. There seems to be an ignorance about Ireland going on , but they turned up today and beat another tier 1 team easily. Fiji had won 6 of their last 7 games. Scotland beat them by a similar score with all their first team out and it was seen as a great win.

@EggchasersRugby he's a gentleman. Fantastic human rights activist, and a very good poet by all accounts. Lovely to see the respect between him and the Fijians

Ireland fan here and this was a much better game today. I felt for Fiji, were they just tired? Agree with you Tim we left several tries out there that went begging.
My thoughts on big Jacob: the big lad is BACK! He made a real impact coming off his wing into midfield, and if some of his supposedly more illustrious colleagues could pass, he was itching to let fly. Hanson butchered chances to give both a Jacob and Cormac a score. Maybe I'm being hyper-critical, but although Aki rightly got MotM, there were at least two occasions where Jacob was steaming up on his left and Aki chose to go inside and take the contact, when Jacob only had one or two to beat had he received it, and we know that's not necessarily a problem when his dander is up, as it clearly was. Particularly in this sort of match, just going into contact rather than rolling the dice for a true strike winger; I thought those were real missed opportunities. I was left wondering, would Aki have made those passes if Lowe were outside him? Was there a lack of trust or familiarity? Oh, by the way, for all those anti-Stockdale genius posters in advance of the game - he didn't put a foot wrong in defence.
Was most impressed with Sam P's passing. He will beef up as he has a big frame and will add muscle in the next few years. I think we see him as number 22 next week. I think Crowley will start.
I missed the first twenty minutes, so I may have missed something, but I think Hollie Davidson had a really good game. More consistent and attentive refereeing than I've seen recently. She needs to be careful with her positioning though, she'll get knocked out
I don't know the laws well enough (who does?), but O'Driscoll's point was that the mitigation of "not a high degree of danger" shouldn't have applied as it was deemed to be deliberate foul play. If that's true, then, even as an Irish fan, Im would have to wonder did he get a "home town big nation" benefit of doubt.
Could have been a red, it was a lazy tackle. Other than that there was a few times where he was undecided what to do, a sharper team would be all over him.
My thoughts on the Young Prentender: he had a shocker at the start. A stupid shoulder to the head, rightly a yellow, could have been a red. As soon as he got back on, he kicked the ball dead while going for the corner, then 2 minutes later he kicked a straightforward one out on the full under no pressure. But, to be fair to the lad, he regrouped and looked the part for the rest of his game. Nothing special, but good experience for him. Perhaps the Dublin media will ease off on anointing him for a bit while he gains more experience.
@@SmashboiSchwift You can sense the gritted teeth thru which it was typed. called out every tiny error and baying for a red card."nothing special"...these clows will be very very confused when they see him starting ahead of Jack very soon. i love it.
Was there for the game, have to say I did feel the ref was giving a lot of calls irelands way that shouldn’t have been. Lots of instances I saw Ireland players diving into rucks from the side or being in offside positions that weren’t called at all, and the ref told Hansen not to run after one breakdown as she wanted to stop play, but he ran and scored and she didn’t do anything. All this coming from a neutral fan too
Irish commentary said Prendergast could have had a red card upgrade. No bias there. As for Alan Quinlan, I've heard he's a really good fellow from someone I know who met him, but I get what you're saying Tim. I rarely listen to him as it's uncomfortable. Somehow, he always brings it back to, "When I used to play for Munster in the good old days". The match could be Mongolia v Bangladesh, but Alan Quinlan will end up talking about Munster back in his playing days😂
You are correct It is Alan Quinlan on commentry on Virgin Media in Ireland... But he also thought that Sam Prendergast yellow could be upgraded to a 20 min red and nobody could complain.
@ tbh I groaned when I saw Hollie was reffing the game BUT we have to give up and coming refs games like this to develop and she will improve over time. She’s very new to this level and I’m not sure Sam Grove white was a great refs assistant. I think some experienced refs on the line would have been more help to her.
@@hanoitripper1809 we could say the same about a few other refs as well. It’s tough as we’ve had a number of really good refs retire recently and the quality isn’t as good and as widely spread as it once was in my opinion. Plus I think the game needs something more than one ref at the professional level. It’s far from easy.
Agree with this and it's the reason it won't grow outside a niche audience. the rules are very difficult to understand. Soccer, golf, tennis, even curling is so easy to understand TV viewers can engage with the drama unfolding. apart from a last minute drop goal or try, it's really hard to understand what's going on.
@@matthewvanrensburg3824 The "laws" are too interpretative that's the problem. That makes the refs job difficult they are trying to create a perfectly safe game and the loses both the spirit of the game and can be counterproductive for safety ( low tackles = more concussions ).

1 set of rules for ireland and another set for the rest of the world. Ireland is where nz was a few years ago. Just do what they want and get away with it
@@GoldenbanjoDJbased on the rules he was lucky not to receive a red. Once you tuck your arm like he did it’s deemed as always illegal. There was no malice but he was fortunate not to receive a red
If roles were reversed and that was a Fijian... red for sure. It's the little things that can change momentum. For sure, Ireland was the better team and deserved the W. 4:53 I also feel they brushed over that vd Vlier finish... in the highlights, he definitely tries to dot down after 'losing' the ball.... Gus amazing debut, definitely surpassed Herring now IMO, Izuchuckwu fairly quite debut, but held his own, Casey with a good outing aswell with Sam they had all so far had errors creaking in but that's to be expected. Aki x Henshaw rolling it back to Connacht 15/16! Unfortunate for cube with another injury, speedy recovery! Hansen almost back to his best, not far off. Kelleher, Cian, Murray were OK from the bench, Stu and Frawley less so. My team for next week 1. Porter 2. Kelleher 3. Furlong 4. J. McCarthy 5. Beirne 6. Baird if not, if not Izuchuckwu 7. JvdF 8. Doris 9. JGP 10. Crowley 11. Lowe 12. Aki 13. Ringrose 14. Hansen 15. Keenan 16. G.McCarthy 17. Healy 18. Bealham 19. Ryan 20. Izuchuckwu/C. Prendergast 21. Casey 22. S. Prendergast 23. McCarthy looked like he had been playing hooker for Ireland for years. That kid could be something special. Pity we seem to be collecting loads of top talent at hooker, would be nice to spread it around to other positions!
I always find the minutia around scoring a try frustrating. It was short, ref did well to ping it in real time but neglected to say “On field no try, looks short then knock on” Reality is we all know what she meant but because it wasn’t said a certain way we’re all letter of law legal eagles 🤢
Don't worry Tim, The irish president is michael d Higgins. He isn't prime minister and the beauty of this channel is that it comes off the cuff.. and it's rugby you are covering so no worries from this irish man
I know we talk about the ref every week but that was disgusting Especialy with a team like ireland who wil punish you fiji was getting blown out of the game
They were blowing themselves out of the game bro, they just kept giving away clear, stupid, penalties. Much like Ireland for the past two weeks, but worse.
1:30 Nail on the head. Of course you gotta get the fundamentals right, but it seemed like they just wanted to bosh through us. And they've the players to do that to a degree, but it fairly one dimensional from the usual chaos you got from Fiji.
Short and lost forward was what was said. Hollie had a great game. Shes getting a lot of unjust grief online purely because shes a woman. Top young ref
I am Irish and felt that Prendergast should have got a red... it was deliberate foul play, even if as they said "not a high degree of danger" I was not alone in this, the pundits on the tv said it could have been red and I was watching the game at a friend's house and we all called it should have been red. There was no intention to cause an injury but it was deliberate and a bit careless. Still delighted Ireland won, Fiji are a fantastic side and I would love to see them get far more success (except against Ireland of course)
Gus McCarthy such a freak. At times you thought he was a fly half. Actual fly half wasn’t bad either. What a delight to watch is Sam Prendergast. The true heir of Sexton. So creative and evasive. So composed and clean under pressure. For the Australians and other afl fans here. He reminds me of AFL star Nick Daicos. Also the sub bringing on a hooker for a 12. I love teams breaking the Rugby habits.
The hype about Prendergast and Daicos are definitely similar. Daicos is the AFL's second coming of Christ. In the AFL, it would have been a free to Daicos for the equivalent of that yellow card offense.
@ Haha. I am not a Collingwood fan you know and I agree that he is overprotected and the AFLs poster child. Still a terrific player, undeniable. The hype, the style of play, and even a bit of look. So much in common.
Irish commentators said it could easily have been a red. Said if the player was wearing white or a couple of stone heavier it was 100% red. As an Irishman I’d agree.
Is it too early to say "we're back"? Probably. The test against the Aussies will give us a better idea. That said, Prendergast was more than competent at 10. Onwards and upwards.
TBF the Irish commentators are pretty one eyed. Irish myself. I’m torn on this because I think as a small island nation where historically it’s been watched mostly in Ireland it kinda makes sense. My favourite commentators are the kiwi ones. Murray mex head etc. Not as biased as ours but also insular.
Hansen’s non-forward pass hasn’t stopped Munster fans hammering him for it because they want the extremely one dimensional Calvin Nash ahead of him in the pecking order.
Jesus Fiji couldn't stop giving away penalties, the game was stop start but if anything she could have given more it was like the game after a big team night out proper shocking
I agree it was short. What I didn't understand is why, if it's short, you stop the game as the ball is therefore still live. But others have said she thought it was knocked on (not sure it was but it explains it)
Many thanks for the vid. Credit Fiji players for kind curtesy and respect of President Michael D. Higgins (an example here to Martin Johnson?). Some observations. Completely agree Fiji seemed reluctant to play the inventive adventurous unstructured rugby which is so enjoyable to watch, and apart from the two tries, only towards the end started playing to their strengths, sniping forward with the ball in one hand. In contrast in the second half Ireland played well from unstructured play with Fijian style basketball passes. Agree red would have been very harsh for Prendergast. It seemed more like obstruction and leaning in with the shoulder, rather than intent, with a low level of danger. Hence no HIA. Ref did the right thing, yellow and left it to the bunker to determine, which had the advantage of viewing numerous replays in reaching their decision. I was also initially confused at the call on the Fiji try which was short, but the ref clarified immediately, in effect: my view short, then lost forward, - and sought TMO confirmation, which confirmed. Game restarted with Irish scrum consistent with call. Van der Flier try also referred to TMO. Didn't see much wrong with ref, who calmly explained all decisions, and I thought all the forward passes called against Ireland were reasonable calls, (though unforgiveable as AF will explain on Monday). Again, ref showed common sense approach by not following up on handbags in the last minute, I thought initiated by Fiji player's afters on try scorer, in what was otherwise an even tempered, if bruising, encounter. Kudos to Fiji but with due respect, Australia will be a much bigger challenge next weekend.
Figi we're terrible ire made lots of errors and left a lot of points on the field. Not sure Ireland camp will be happy. Great to blood new players though.
For a lot of youngsters out there, it was a mix bag but the positives outweighed the negatives. Inexperienced Half backs never played with each other, young hooker, 6 was good - when they tighten up the skills they will come good. Poor Frawley will need a serious ice bath after that one, he got ended several times. Thought Osborne looked very assured for his short time on the field and delighted to see stockdale put himself around - looked dangerous with his Carrie’s and hungry for work. On another day prendergast would have seen red
Before today I was a big fan of how dear Holly handled her matches ... but she burnt all that goodwill in just a single match. She was abysmal. As for the 'yellow' ... it was a straight red, and not of the 20min red variety. That was a deliberate shoulder put there. Agree with you on the game being stopped for a "ref thought" ... surely you let it play out in that situation, and then go back and check what really happened.
Prendergast is in the O'Gara/Sexton mould of not offering a running threat of his own. This is one reason I like Crowley, he offers Ireland a different dimension (Leinster fan btw)
Tim, you don’t need Michael D Higgins (Ireland’s President) to show you stature difference when Craig Casey is there. MDH is 5’4”, CC 5’5”. You have to be very gutsy to play this game at that height surely?

@@BaneofBalor Crowley is better no question. Sam will be really good (injury permitting) by the time he’s 24.
@Ollyk1 Yeah I really meant from the perspective of the future of the 10 jersey
Crowley currently has bigger games under his belt including a URC final and a regular for Munster. As a Leinster fan, Prendergast needs is not at that level yet.
@barryb90 It's clear to anyone watching he's just better. Might be a bit younger and less experienced but he is better
Don’t worry he’s young. The plays just go with the tried and trusted Doris, VDF, Big Joe. I thought he was solid. He’ll get more chances.
❤️
Some brilliant offloads from Gus McCarthy. Hooker is not exactly a position where Ireland were lacking depth, but the future looks promising.
First time for new players. Just remember Johnny Sexton wasn’t really good on his Ireland exposure. Players will be phased when playing international rugby. What a brilliant place to do it. Well done AF! Ageing Ireland team refresh absolutely needed.
Good moral boost BUT will need to be better next weekend against a resurgent Australia.
They need to work on their passing, atrocious at times

@ yes they did but equally they scored 8 tries with some sublime passing. There was a totally different Irish team out there and many early injuries lots of position changes. There seems to be an ignorance about Ireland going on , but they turned up today and beat another tier 1 team easily. Fiji had won 6 of their last 7 games. Scotland beat them by a similar score with all their first team out and it was seen as a great win.

Ireland fan here and this was a much better game today. I felt for Fiji, were they just tired? Agree with you Tim we left several tries out there that went begging.
She stopped as she thought it was a knock forward, she said it live
Jacob looked great I thought. He was unlucky not to get on the scoreboard himself. Good to have him back in the mix.
Was most impressed with Sam P's passing. He will beef up as he has a big frame and will add muscle in the next few years. I think we see him as number 22 next week. I think Crowley will start.
Best part was Ireland youngsters looking good
They really did!
@@EggchasersRugbybut against a tired looking Fiji.
I missed the first twenty minutes, so I may have missed something, but I think Hollie Davidson had a really good game. More consistent and attentive refereeing than I've seen recently.

@ oh here she is. The most pointless commenter on RUclips. You’ve managed to say something even stupider than ‘and?’ this time
Irish commentary feed were saying Pendergast was lucky it wasn’t a red too Tim.
Yep the commentary team said that and Trimby said the same in the studio afterwards.
2 years ago that's a red and a 3 week ban, but I think yellow was fair.
Could have been a red, it was a lazy tackle. Other than that there was a few times where he was undecided what to do, a sharper team would be all over him.
@@t3lurid3 Irish media are bunch of whining clowns .
Sorry Tim, they said here on TV in Ireland that Prendergast was v. lucky (Quinlan himself)
Quinlan is famous for being fair towards Leinster players when he isn't trying to play opthamologist with them.
I stand corrected then! My apologies to Alan Quinlan :)
@@EggchasersRugbythere was no intent .
Quinny does not like Pendrergast cause he is not munster.
I often feel that Quinlan over-eggs it to be extra extra ‘fair’
Alan Quinlan did actually say Sam's card could be upgraded to a red at the time...just FYI 😊
Alan Quinn was honest when I listened, he said “that easily could have been a red, he got away with it”, I think he was honest
Fair enough. I stand corrected.
Great to see yoings kids playing u will learn much more playing than training 😅😅

@@SmashboiSchwift You can sense the gritted teeth thru which it was typed. called out every tiny error and baying for a red card."nothing special"...these clows will be very very confused when they see him starting ahead of Jack very soon. i love it.
I thought Izuchukwu was unlucky not to get the try. The pass looked very flat, could have at least checked it as it would have resulted in a try.
Yeh he’s a good bloke and no doubt fine in real life but he is over-visible in the media - problem is he is just not a very good analyst.
You are correct It is Alan Quinlan on commentry on Virgin Media in Ireland... But he also thought that Sam Prendergast yellow could be upgraded to a 20 min red and nobody could complain.
Good game. Must say Prendergast was lucky not to get red. Some lovely passes and mccarthy had a great game
LOVED his passing. So smooth
Me thinks you are a Munster fan.
Which McCarthy?
Why was it not a red card?
Yep, that was a red all day long. Total intent to inflict injury.
You’re wrong on the short call Tim. She said it was short and then a knock on. She said that from the start. Listen back.
Fair enough. Wasn't a knock on though, was it?
@ tbh I groaned when I saw Hollie was reffing the game BUT we have to give up and coming refs games like this to develop and she will improve over time. She’s very new to this level and I’m not sure Sam Grove white was a great refs assistant. I think some experienced refs on the line would have been more help to her.

@@Ollyk1she can develop in 2nd tier or women’s tests if they want to go that route. She was condescending to the Fijians and poor overall.
@@hanoitripper1809 we could say the same about a few other refs as well. Rugby must be the game with the most inconsistent refereeing in the world…
Agree with this and it's the reason it won't grow outside a niche audience. the rules are very difficult to understand. Soccer, golf, tennis, even curling is so easy to understand TV viewers can engage with the drama unfolding. apart from a last minute drop goal or try, it's really hard to understand what's going on.

Especialy with a team like ireland who wil punish you fiji was getting blown out of the game
She is the best referee in the URC and rapidly becoming one of the better at international.
I thought she had a reasonable game but spare me the victimhood. She can be criticised just like other refs.
I am Irish and felt that Prendergast should have got a red... it was deliberate foul play, even if as they said "not a high degree of danger"
I was not alone in this, the pundits on the tv said it could have been red and I was watching the game at a friend's house and we all called it should have been red.

Is it too early to say "we're back"? Probably. The test against the Aussies will give us a better idea. That said, Prendergast was more than competent at 10. Onwards and upwards.

I actually like your jumper Tim 👍
Hansen’s non-forward pass hasn’t stopped Munster fans hammering him for it because they want the extremely one dimensional Calvin Nash ahead of him in the pecking order.

In hiding no doubt.
Figi were clearly short of the try line Tim as seen by ref Holly Davidson.Very conclusive Tim its the rules.
I agree it was short. What I didn't understand is why, if it's short, you stop the game as the ball is therefore still live. But others have said she thought it was knocked on (not sure it was but it explains it)
Men playing with boys some talent coming through😮😮
Many thanks for the vid.
What is everyone's opinion on Beirne at lock opposed to 6?
Fiji didn’t turn up for this game. Ireland is a strong side and Fiji lost the plot completely. Very disappointing!
As an Irish fan I have to say I think Prendergast was very lucky to get away with yellow
