The last work of Steve Perry with Journey. Journey was the hardest working Band. Touring, Recording and Shooting Videos simultaneously for 10 years. By the time this album was recorded, Steve Perry was in need of double-hip replacements and in sever pain. He was burned out to the point that after…he dropped out from society. The official video is a treasure for us…Perry was in so much pain yet, all we see is the passion The Voice always gave us.
One of the most flawless, beautiful voices Ive ever heard. Known as the Voice and Top 100 best singers in the world. Sounds as good live as recorded. Saw them many times in the 70s and 80s. Just a stunning song, so romantic. "Mother, Father" is one of my favs that show off his voice. Thanx so much, Peace
I'm surprised you didn't get the video of the band performing this song. I believe it is the original members of Journey and I think it was the last time they were together.
Steve Perry the lead singer for Journey was often referred to as the voice, I would say he's definitely in the top 10 of greatest frontmen of rock bands. He has an incredible range and can hold a note forever. I look forward to your journey exploring more Journey.
This WAS our wedding song. Well technically is was our first dance at the reception. They do have a lot of rocker songs. The reason he's a little raspy is he's a lot older here than their earlier heyday. His R&B / Soul is more motown really - his biggest idol/influence was Sam Cooke. The "beetle with wings" on the clay jug is an Egyptian scarab beetle; a signature art feature on all their album art.
Journey has been around since the early 70s but it wasnt until lead vocalist Steve Perry made his way to the group when they made their mark. Steve Perry's major influence is Sam Cooke in which you could hear it throughout the songs he sings. The group recorded hit after hit from the late 70s into the 80s. Journey, I believe began the power ballad era with their huge hit 'Open Arms' in 1981. And you are correct, the beatle like logo is Journey's trademark. The greatest hits album you saw is one of Billboard's best selling albums as it sold over 18 million albums worldwide. 'When You Love A Woman' was the last high charting song to be performed with Steve Perry in the group in 1996. According to a Behind the Music documentary on VH1 many years ago, it was informed Perry needed surgery but the band wasnt going to wait for him to recover. The band decided if the group started without Perry, they can make it without him now. To many, it became a huge mistake.
Oh noooooo the video is fire. Steve Perry's gorgeous hair is down to his waist, but his vocals in this song are not only vocal perfection but visual perfection too. The orchestra is so beautiful and Neal Schon on the beautiful white guitar omg girl you are missing out. Please go back and see the video. Your looking at an album cover when you can see the gorgeous Steve Perry's "smokiness" in his eyes with an orchestra around him.🥰🤩❤
The album art was important because we would go to the record store and spend hours looking through albums to buy. The record store was a gathering place and a hang out
Explaining the album cover: This album was after a ten year hiatus (thirteen since this particular lineup), and the artist who did all their old covers had gotten very expensive so they reached out to an artist who one of the members had taken an interest in his work. So they gave the artist the lyrics to the four singles and he took elements from them. For more of their mellow side I'd recommend 'Open Arms' and 'Faithfully' for that power ballad feel. 'Lights,' 'Sweet and Simple,' and 'Natural Thing' for a more 70s vibe. Edit: 'Mother Father' live, because it's amazing. Edit 2: There's a great official video for this song featuring the band. If you were dodging YT copyright I get it, but I think you'd enjoy it.
🔥🧤🔥🧤🔥🧤🔥🧤🔥🧤🔥🧤 .. this is a great one Britt. Really , my favorite Journey song. 🤔 .. not sure why you didn't watch the official video. You could see how they perform it.. how each member sings. Steve Perry does have one of the finest voices ever. Hopefully, you will react to more Journey.! TY
Just getting into your reactions, and I love your analysis of Steve Perry's voice and Journey overall. Steve was in his mid-40s when this album dropped in the mid-90s. The earlier Journey songs you reviewed were from the 70s and 80s, so he was in his late 20s, early 30s. You can definitely hear the deepening/thickening of his voice, which I love personally, and the harmonies with the rest of the band which remain the same. He has done solo work. I'd recommend Foolish Heart or Go Away from his album Street Talk (mid-80s); Missing you or Somewhere There's Hope from For the Love of Strange Medicine (mid-90s). He also did a solo album called Traces in 2018. SP was late 60s at the time, and so you'll hear a change is his voice, raspier and still gorgeous. I'd recommend Could We Be Somethin Again and Sun Shines Gray from Traces. Just my .02 if you want to go down that particular rabbit hole. Sounds like you have great love for beautiful voices, and he is one of a kind for sure. I feel so lucky to have grown up during those years, was 12 when Infinity dropped and an instant fan. It was cool to discover it and live thru the band as it changed. Awesome to see how the younger generation embraces these songs. ❤
What Steve Perry gave vocally, night after night after night in the 1970s and 80s is nothing short of miraculous. Regardless of it being the first show or last show of the tour, always sounded great and gave it everything he had. I genuinely miss these guys collaborating to make music together.
I absolutely love Journey! Steve Perry was one of my teen crushes. He is known as "The Voice". I've seen them in concert twice. Unfortunately, never with Steve though. You should watch a live performance of them to REALLY appreciate their musicianship and Steve's great live voice. Nice choice for a reaction, Britt!
Some Journey info: Steve Perry was heavily influenced by Sam Cooke and other R&B, gospel-influenced singers. Neal Schon grew up playing the blues / blues-rock, jazz fusion, but moved into Latin-rock when he joined Santana (before Journey). Jonathan Cain was a pop-rock keyboardist. Ross Valory was a rock and jazz-rock bassist. Steve Smith was a jazz drummer. Put all of those together and you have Journey. This group could play anything. Their catalog has pop-rock, hard-rock, blues-rock, jazz fusion, synth-rock and even some Latin-rock and psychedelic-rock. They had very tight harmonies, as well. The beetle with wings is the Egyptian scarab beetle. It was featured on several album covers, as well as the infinity ring, which is around the distant planet on this album cover. They are often called the kings of the "power ballad", but have plenty of harder songs, too.
AHHhhh... the WONDERS of "JOURNEY".... from the guitars, drums, bass, piano, & of COURSE... Steve Perry's VOICE... truly LEGENDARY... ALL AROUND. The EPITOME of musical GREATNESS. I've a FAN since EVER since... they graced my ears in the late 1970's (with their wholesome sound, stage presence, song writing/lyrics, & that WONDEROUS voice leading the way... LEGENDS of Good Ol' ROCK-N-ROLL/Arena Rock, TOP FORTY HITS, etc...). Check out their catalog of songs, you won't regret it, Britt... I promise you!!! I look forward to many more reactions from your channel!!!! I, too, am a 1970's music FANATIC!!!! Things were much more simpler than now... AND the MUSIC really did MOVE YOU & your soul.... Peace, Love, & Liberty. MIC DROP 🎤.
This song was released in November of 1996, and serves as a Masterclass showcasing the perfection of the elements of a song. Music has changed, but classics live on. Great reaction
I've been in love with Steve Perry since 1979. His voice has always spoken to me. The way he uses those soaring vocals, and phrases in the song is beautiful. I had every CD Journey put out, until he stopped being the lead vocalist. Then I followed his solo career, Foolish Heart is a favorite from that time. He's put out newer songs and I love them too. I love him and his voice. He could sing the phone book to me Is be a happy woman 😊😊.
The 'object on the ground with the beetle thing' is one of Journey's calling cards from many of their album covers which featured a Scarab beetle, many times with wings.
The band mates are singing the background. This was the last album Steve did with Journey. He lost his passion for music after that. But gradually got it back and his girlfriend ,Kellie Nash who was going through cancer asked him to make a promise that if anything should happen to her, he wouldn't go back into seclusion. She passed away in 2012. He came out with an album in 2018. Later alternate version of that album, like acoustic songs , and a Christmas one in 2021. He's still working and great. Helping others with music as well.
Journey, as a whole were the meaning of my existence in the 80s, because I was a decent singer in those days and the moment I heard Steve Perry vocalize, that was who I covered more than any other. And being African American, that was a hard challenge, but anytime I heard his voice, I was up for it. Winning singing competitions in the US Air Force was no small feat, but I did very well. His voice made me practice to become ad good as I became. Thank you Mr Perry.
"Still She Cries" from this same album alternatively provides the perspective of a "lost love" and captures the sentiment extremely well... lyrically, musically, vocally. A couple of unique aspects of "Still She Cries" departing from typical Journey is Neal Schon's guitar work (both the opening, and his solo, differ from his usual style) , and a piano solo by Jonathan Cain.
You really need to watch the live in Houston Texas Escape tour concert I really think you'll be very impressed. They have what a softer rock style BUT can really rock your world also. Bon Jovi dubbed Steve Perry the voice because of his incredible singing abilities.
Oh, you want to dive into a Journey rabbit hole. Lots of their songs could be wedding songs. This isn't their strongest song, by far. Steve Perry was nicknamed The Voice for a reason. He is the BALLAD KING. You want to check out the top of the batch, Don't Stop Believin'; Lovin, Touchin, Squeezin; Any Way you Want It; Who's Cryin Now; Faithfully; Feelin That Way; Separate Ways; Send Her My Love; Open Arms; Stone in Love; and definitely check out some of his solo songs, especially "Oh, Cherie"
Steve Perry has one of the greatest voices of our time. When you hear it you instantly know who it is. The entire band is one of the best. So sad Steve is no longer with them because they might be able to have a different front man who is also very talented but it’s just not the same without Steve Perry
Steve Perry worked really hard to develop that rasp to his voice that became what you’re hearing later in his career. His earlier work like “Wheel in the Sky” “Lights” “ Lovin’ Touchin’ Squeezin’” presents a more pure vocal in my opinion. I recommend, “PEOPLE AND PLACES” live from way back.
He is perhaps the single best male vocalist in rock - but this is a strange song because he's known for his perfectly clear, tap on a crystal glass, style tone. And in this song, he's smokey and raspy, perfectly. It's a sound I didn't realize he could do until I heard this song.
99% of Journeys songs are 5 star. Twice I was able to see them in concert. This song usually brings tears to my eyes, as I never found a woman to dedicate it to. Top three singers? Dimash, Steve Perry and Freddy Mercury. There's a video here on YT of this song.
Neal Schon, lead guitarist, did some solo album work...definitely check out "Bandalero", "Cool Breeze", and "Send Me an Angel". All instrumental but beautiful and emotional sounding. The entire "Beyond the Thunder" album is fantastic.
Yes they do, it always seemed that somehow their songs were recorded in a way that made them sound big, I also had the same feeling with the music of Van Halen.
The raspy character of Steve Perry’s voice came later in his career due to throat problems he developed over decades of singing .. and of course age .. with that said ,because of his unique tone and style , he still remains one of the most recognized vocalist in music … and even to this day is still considered the gold standard in vocal artists
Hard to beat a voice like Steve Perry, a phenomenal range and power... Do a reaction to their top 10 hits, and you'll see why...not to mention a long list of just truly great songs in their own right. Journey, a fantastic band. All the best. Cheers.
Brit, Pleeeeze go back and watch the original video. There's a piece in the video where Neal Schon comes in with a beautiful white guitar with amazing solo, then Steve comes in, in a black leather jacket with long hair to his waist, its such a short clip but its beautiful to watch. The piano and orchestra is epic too. I promise you will love it❤
Steve Perry is the greatest singer ever as far as I am concerned! Journey has not been the same without him!! They are still good just not the same!! ❤
Journey has always used a lot of Egyptian symbolism in their cover art. The "beetle" you saw on the vase is "the scarab" the band has used as a representation of the band itself. If you look at their Escape album from 1981 it is the scarab breaking free from the world it's in. It was a follow up from their live album titled "Captured". Trial By Fire, the album you just listened to was the final time this particular set of Journey band members recorded together. Neal Schon - lead guitar ( founding band member) Steve Perry- lead vocals Ross valley - Bass Steve Smith - Drums Jonathan Cain - Keyboards Journey is rock, hard rock, R&B ( listen to "Walks Like A Lady" on the Captured album) and this particular album was dubbed "Adult Contemporary". All their musicians are at the top of their instruments. " Trial By Fire" is their most Spiritual Album, if you take the time to break their music down. Steve Perry, Steve Smith Jonathan and Ross are devout Christians. Neal is Spiritual but lines to remain neutral in his declaration of faith it appears. ( That is my opinion only) The album and song "Trial By Fire" is taken directly from 1 Peter 1:7 , 1 Corinthians 3: 13-15, as well as James 1:6 and 2 Corinthians 4:7. If you are familiar with any of these Scriptures you will recognize their lyrics immediately in the song titled "Trial By Fire". This album is loaded with references to God throughout it's songs. "One More" "Colors of The Spirit" "Easy To Fall" ...join Trial By Fire with references to God. On top of this being one of Steve Perry's best vocal albums with Journey, the musicians and instrumental play is their best music, perhaps ever. Ross Valory loved this album. Journey had taken a long hiatus from everything and this was their first collaboration in a decade. He compared the album and music to the Phoenix, rising from the ashes and being a new life- creation. It was a shame this was the end however or Steve Perry's Journey. "Still She Cries" - some of Jonathan Cain's best piano work "When I Think Of You". - Steve Perry's requiem song to his late Mother. You WILL cry listening to this. "It's Just The Rain" - simply a beautiful song on all facets "Trial By Fire" - Neal plays some incredible music on the guitar in this song. This album is a gem and it.never got a tour or the notoriety because Steve left the band after recording it. But Britt- I think you will be pleasantly surprised to listen to the songs I mentioned. Take care and God bless you and your family! Jonathan has several albums he's recorded entirely Christian music. I'm bringing this up because you mentioned in your reaction this particular song sounded like it had a choir, and you said Church.
I Journey, with Steve Perry was at its finest during that time they did not tour for this album. This was at the time of Steve Perry disease from his hip. I’m sending you the original video of this song during the filming. Steve Perry was in great playing, but he continued to shoot a video with the doctors in the back packing him with ice during the breaks As you can tell by The Voice Steve Perry, who is still strong, beautiful mesmerizing last year in the billboard 100 I had a contest are the best rock singer of all time, and Steve Perry did win this I believe he is one of the best singers, and I enjoyed listening to his albums, while he was with Journey, and mostly his albums without Johnny my favorite of his is for the love of strange medicine should check into those tracks. So here is the actual video instead of just showing you the album cover ruclips.net/video/idE1lsqG2Vc/видео.htmlsi=iCBWM1uPoJOcFJvU
Steve Perry is the premier singer of the rock era. Beautiful voice and tone coupled with amazing vocal technique. Steve is essentially an R&B singer styled after Sam Cooke. You should try some of Steve's solo work including Foolish Heart and Oh Sherry, Journey Why Can't This Night Go On Forever?, It's Just The Rain. Love your channel.
Steve Perry is a vocal beast please please check check out Journey Mother Father live in Houston or Wheel in the Sky live in Osaka the vocal acrobatics are incredible ❤❤❤
Steve Perry is called “The Voice”
The last work of Steve Perry with Journey. Journey was the hardest working Band. Touring, Recording and Shooting Videos simultaneously for 10 years.
By the time this album was recorded, Steve Perry was in need of double-hip replacements and in sever pain. He was burned out to the point that after…he dropped out from society.
The official video is a treasure for us…Perry was in so much pain yet, all we see is the passion The Voice always gave us.
The video of this Journey song is awesome. Britt really should have viewed the video of this song for her review and comments.
Agreed. Especially considering the fact that Steve was in terrible pain due to his hip problem at the time of the shooting of the video.
One of the most flawless, beautiful voices Ive ever heard. Known as the Voice and Top 100 best singers in the world. Sounds as good live as recorded. Saw them many times in the 70s and 80s. Unbelievable that this is their only Grammy nomination….you would love this video.
The combo of Steve's vocals and Neil's guitar has always made for beautiful music.
The singer is Steve Perry and is known as the Voice. He is the undisturbed king of 80s Ballard's and Love songs.
Think you meant "undisputed"...
Oh you need to watch the video of this. It takes it to a whole other level.
Exactly!!!! It’s beautiful!!!!
I'm surprised you didn't get the video of the band performing this song. I believe it is the original members of Journey and I think it was the last time they were together.
Not the original lineup, but certainly the "classic" lineup, and arguably the "best" lineup.
Yes, would have preferred seeing them in the video singing this song.
No. This is the lineup from Escape and Frontiers.
Yep. The 5 men that most of us know as Journey with Steve Perry singing beautifully.
You really need to take this journey. I'm Filipino and Arnel is a great singer in his own right, but nobody compares to Steve Perry.
Steve Perry the lead singer for Journey was often referred to as the voice, I would say he's definitely in the top 10 of greatest frontmen of rock bands. He has an incredible range and can hold a note forever. I look forward to your journey exploring more Journey.

Journey with Steve Perry is amazing. Take the deep dive. They're better live than any other band. Start with still they ride.

Wow! You actually made a reaction video that wasn’t live, and was a studio cut without a video attached! Thank you!

this is a great one Britt. Really , my favorite Journey song. 🤔 .. not sure why you didn't watch the official video. You could see how they perform it.. how each member sings. Steve Perry does have one of the finest voices ever. Hopefully, you will react to more Journey.! TY
Legend perry loving people fantastic singer forever 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 oreginality absolutely amazing the golden voice
Britt's singing always stuns me. I want to hear more. What a glorious, gorgeous woman who made the room a little brighter w every post.
I love Steve Perry's voice!!!

Faithfully, I can go on and on. Every now and then react to them
With Journey- all live videos are a 1000 times better than the studio versions! The 1981 Houston show is spectacular.
Agreed! They're phenomenal live, and the videos from Houston are worth specifying when recommending songs to reactors.
What Steve Perry gave vocally, night after night after night in the 1970s and 80s is nothing short of miraculous. Regardless of it being the first show or last show of the tour, always sounded great and gave it everything he had. I genuinely miss these guys collaborating to make music together.
This song I had my late wife listened to. This is for her. RIP, my love.
Dude, that's pretty heavy stuff. So sorry for your loss.
Yes u need to watch the video if u haven't already
Why can’t this night go on forever
I absolutely love Journey! Steve Perry was one of my teen crushes. He is known as "The Voice".

Nice choice for a reaction, Britt!
I’ve been crushing on Steve Perry since I was 7 years old. I’m now 53. I was fortunate enough to see Journey with Steve Perry.
@@teresamcmeans566 you lucky dog! I've seen them twice with Arnel Pineda. He is amazing too, but definitely not Steve.
@@butterflymama0838 it was in 1986. I was in the Journey fan club so I was able to get tickets down on the floor. It was incredible.

Steve Perry is LEDGENDARY...the GOAT
Sam Cooke was his favourite singer and was his inspiration
For Steve Perry's best live vocal performance, listen to Journey "Mother Father" live 1981 in Houston
Journey is a rock and roll band who perfected the rock ballads. You want rock, listen to Lay it down and Dead or alive. 😮

99% of Journeys songs are 5 star. Twice I was able to see them in concert. This song usually brings tears to my eyes, as I never found a woman to dedicate it to. Top three singers? Dimash, Steve Perry and Freddy Mercury. There's a video here on YT of this song.
You need to hear open arms
OPEN ARMS is absolutely wonderful!! Yes! 😊
I don't know where you got this version. But you SHOULD see the video of them performing it.
I love journey!
Steve Perry (the GOAT) idol was Sam Cooke
This is a MUST listen to, Mother Father from 1981 Live at Houston. OMG Chills!
Neal Schon, lead guitarist, did some solo album work...definitely check out "Bandalero", "Cool Breeze", and "Send Me an Angel". All instrumental but beautiful and emotional sounding. The entire "Beyond the Thunder" album is fantastic.
Steve Perry what can I say, the voice 🎤🤘😆🤘
All of their songs sound so epic.
Yes they do, it always seemed that somehow their songs were recorded in a way that made them sound big, I also had the same feeling with the music of Van Halen.
Oh,you should have watched rgw official video. He's singing this and its beautiful.
The circle around the earth symbolizes a journey. Hence the name journey
The raspy character of Steve Perry’s voice came later in his career due to throat problems he developed over decades of singing .. and of course age .. with that said ,because of his unique tone and style , he still remains one of the most recognized vocalist in music … and even to this day is still considered the gold standard in vocal artists
Lights is a favorite as is Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'.
Love this song. So beautiful.
Journey who's crying now live huston
Hard to beat a voice like Steve Perry, a phenomenal range and power... Do a reaction to their top 10 hits, and you'll see why...not to mention a long list of just truly great songs in their own right.
Journey, a fantastic band.
All the best.
Cheers.
Soulful your right
Brit, Pleeeeze go back and watch the original video. There's a piece in the video where Neal Schon comes in with a beautiful white guitar with amazing solo, then Steve comes in, in a black leather jacket with long hair to his waist, its such a short clip but its beautiful to watch. The piano and orchestra is epic too. I promise you will love it❤
Steve perry definitely DOESN'T a rough scratchy voice. On almost every song he's sings it's like butter.. He uses a smoky voice on the song.
Watch the music video, Steve Perry has this unique voice
You need to watch the video of this song. So much emotion.
Great to see you check out the best rock-band ever!!😍
I am still amazed that one woman was gifted with so much beauty ?
Steve Perry is the greatest singer ever as far as I am concerned! Journey has not been the same without him!! They are still good just not the same!! ❤
Journey has always used a lot of Egyptian symbolism in their cover art. The "beetle" you saw on the vase is "the scarab" the band has used as a representation of the band itself. If you look at their Escape album from 1981 it is the scarab breaking free from the world it's in. It was a follow up from their live album titled "Captured".
Trial By Fire, the album you just listened to was the final time this particular set of Journey band members recorded together.
Neal Schon - lead guitar ( founding band member)
Steve Perry- lead vocals
Ross valley - Bass
Steve Smith - Drums
Jonathan Cain - Keyboards
Journey is rock, hard rock, R&B ( listen to "Walks Like A Lady" on the Captured album) and this particular album was dubbed "Adult Contemporary".
( That is my opinion only)
The album and song "Trial By Fire" is taken directly from 1 Peter 1:7 , 1 Corinthians 3: 13-15, as well as James 1:6 and 2 Corinthians 4:7.
If you are familiar with any of these Scriptures you will recognize their lyrics immediately in the song titled "Trial By Fire". This album is loaded with references to God throughout it's songs.
"One More"
"Colors of The Spirit"
"Easy To Fall"
...join Trial By Fire with references to God.
"Still She Cries" - some of Jonathan Cain's best piano work
"When I Think Of You". - Steve Perry's requiem song to his late Mother. You WILL cry listening to this.
"It's Just The Rain" - simply a beautiful song on all facets
"Trial By Fire" - Neal plays some incredible music on the guitar in this song.
Doggone autocorrect -
Ross Valory - not Valley! :o)
The best journey song to me is Faithfully. Steve perry is unbelievable!
She doesn't kike doing vids but live performances and that vid has both!! What to do!! 😂
Love this song!! You gotta hear him sing Mother Father live in concert in Houston. That performance was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Steve Perry idolized Sam Cooke, you can hear Sam in Steve’s perfect voice.
The video version is great. If you ever get a chance to watch that. ❤️
You really need to watch the Official Video.. I think you would appreciate it more! The video is Beautiful
I Journey, with Steve Perry was at its finest during that time they did not tour for this album. This was at the time of Steve Perry disease from his hip. I’m sending you the original video of this song during the filming. Steve Perry was in great playing, but he continued to shoot a video with the doctors in the back packing him with ice during the breaks
As you can tell by The Voice Steve Perry, who is still strong, beautiful mesmerizing last year in the billboard 100 I had a contest are the best rock singer of all time, and Steve Perry did win this I believe he is one of the best singers, and I enjoyed listening to his albums, while he was with Journey, and mostly his albums without Johnny my favorite of his is for the love of strange medicine should check into those tracks.
So here is the actual video instead of just showing you the album cover

This song really shows the grittier side of Steve Perry's voice
You should watch his live performance of the song “Mother ,Father “ amazing
YOU NEED TO SEE THE VIDEO
Beautiful song!! And Steve Perry!!! Just Wow!!😅
❤❤❤❤MAGICAL MUSICIANS MYSTICAL VOICE OF STEVE PERRY ❤❤❤❤❤❤. WOW!!!
Steve Perry did put out a solo album and you absolutely MUST react to Foolish Heart from him. I think you would love it.
Steve Perry is a vocal beast please please check check out Journey Mother Father live in Houston or Wheel in the Sky live in Osaka the vocal acrobatics are incredible ❤❤❤
