  • Since I retired and built my woodshop I have had more time to do the things I really enjoy!! Woodturning of all kinds--especially segmented woodturning--are my favorite. Now that spring and summer have arrived I will be spending more time in the shop making shavings and sawdust! Come along for the journey of a retired beginning woodturner. I'd love to have the company!
For the last couple months I have been turning a lot of green wet wood so I figured I'd change it up a little this time! For this video I decided to turn a simple open segmented bowl with the open segment jig I built! Was fun to build and turn and felt good getting back to what I really enjoy.
See video on making the open segment jig: • Making my open segment...
Final dimensions are 10 1/2"dia x 5"h and wall thickness of 5/8". Bowl was made from locally sourced Walnut & Maple and finished with 3 coats of Tried & True Danish Oil
If you have any questions or comments I try to answer all comments. Please like, share, & subscribe and give me a thumbs up so I know you are enjoying the content. We can all learn together!
    Keep a turning!
    Jim

👏👏 looks great and made with skill and patience. The indexing wheel looks similar to this ‘Paul Howard Fluting Jig Index System’.

You have a method that appears to be fantastic, but unlike anything else I have seen. I have the chuck and lathe, but not the other items. I'm afraid that you custom-made them. I would deeply appreciate getting any or all available. Thank you very much!!!!

Great video! Was wondering about the stop button on your tape measure. It's round, but can't be a magnet with the aluminum angle. How is it attached so you can move it for each ring?
Also, does the starting hole on the plate need to be perfectly aligned with the aluminum angle and the edge of the first segment in order to achieve even spacing on the entire ring?

Great video. Thanks for sharing. I have often wondered what to do with the squeeze out between the segments! How do you handle it?

    • @LakeErieWoodturner
      @LakeErieWoodturner  Год назад

First of all I use Titebond Quick and Thick on all open segments for super fast drying between layers. I try to keep glue squeeze out to a minimum by ju adding a very small amount of glue with my pinkie finger on each side of the segment the align, press and hold for no longer than 5 seconds. Just enough time to turn the indexing jig to the next segment. If I do get too much squeeze out I have a very very small flat screwdriver that I run along side of segment for clean up. I’ll put another open segmented video online in a couple weeks and show it a little clearer.

Thank you Sherrill! For all my segmented turning I use software called Woodtutner Pro. Wonderful program and it has done everything I have asked it too!

Did you build the guage yourself for space to the segments?

On most open segment projects most viewers want to see the construction as opposed to turning. See my latest video about a thin wall walnut bowl for more turning.

      Hi George!
I don't have plans but I did some research online thru AAW site, Tom Lohman site and Chefware Kits. Just a little trial and error (more error) on my part!
Are you starting totally from scratch or are you doing open segments now?
I started on the lathe and gradually morphed into building a segment jig.
Let me know if you need any help on your project.
