DESIGN CHANGE!! Woodturning a Sycamore log almost headed to the firewood pile--Lake Erie Woodturner
NOTE: New Channel Name...The Lake Erie Woodturner
Check out my new website at: www.lakeeriewoodturner.com
This weeks project is a piece of Sycamore destined to be a live edge bowl but the wood had a different idea what it was going to be! Started out good the had to have an immediate design change instead of heading to the firewood pile and turned it into a decent little bowl. Measuring just over 5" diameter and just under 3" deep this beautifully saved chunk of wood will make a nice vessel for holding change, chocolates or nuts. or will look good on a nightstand and hold rings or change.

    i use garage door screen...they make very large window screen material to go across a garage door...i hang it like a shower curtain so i can easily push it out of my way when not turning...but is allows me to easily see through the screen material so my turning area does get dark from it blocking my lights.

    Great video! Was wondering about the stop button on your tape measure. It's round, but can't be a magnet with the aluminum angle. How is it attached so you can move it for each ring? Also, does the starting hole on the plate need to be perfectly aligned with the aluminum angle and the edge of the first segment in order to achieve even spacing on the entire ring?

    What was the process you used to get your aluminum bar to line up perfectly with the center of your adapter/faceplate? Did you fix the post and bar first, tightened in the slot, and mark the base at the end of your bar and drill a hole for your adapter? Is the tip of the aluminum bar aligned with the center or is it the side of the aluminum where you place your segments that is aligned with center? Sorry if these seem like simpleton questions, I'm still new to woodturning, incredibly new to segmented woodturning, and brand new to open segmenting.

    • @LakeErieWoodturner
      @LakeErieWoodturner Год назад

      Sorry for the late reply! When I built my jig and realigned alum angle to jig I built the tower and attached the angle extending to about the center where I thought I would want the center of the indexing ring. Then put string on top of angle and brought string like a plumb bob down to flat surface and made mark for centering drill. once drilled to fit adapter I then realigned precisely the arm and continued to fasten tower into flat base. Keep in mind that the arm does not have to reach exact center but when you add measuring tape ')' must be exact center for proper diameter in glueups. That being said I have had to strighten out the arm after us because when I fastened wood tower I moved just a little sideways when screwed in therefore not having a perfectly square glue up. Good luck and have fun turning!!

    • @LakeErieWoodturner
      @LakeErieWoodturner Год назад

      First of all I use Titebond Quick and Thick on all open segments for super fast drying between layers. I try to keep glue squeeze out to a minimum by ju adding a very small amount of glue with my pinkie finger on each side of the segment the align, press and hold for no longer than 5 seconds. Just enough time to turn the indexing jig to the next segment. If I do get too much squeeze out I have a very very small flat screwdriver that I run along side of segment for clean up. I’ll put another open segmented video online in a couple weeks and show it a little clearer.
