Carriers are a money sink. Not just the initial purchase of 5 BILLION credits for the barebones setup, but also the additional purchases of services that many players deem essential for many valid reasons to make it a truly mobile base. Then there's the fact that you have to pay UPKEEP because what you have also done is hire a crew via an intermediary company, you are paying the crew to upkeep YOUR carrier FOR YOU. That's lore direct from the game. And the more services you get, the higher the upkeep costs. You can disable those services to mitigate the upkeep costs and even disband those services entirely, but you can only do these things and more in specific systems that support Carrier Administration of whatever it's called. It's been over a year since I last played and I'm due to go back in and assess whether or not my Carrier is at risk of decommission. When you fail to pay the upkeep you become delinquent and the extraneous services are locked out (and probably more, don't remember, it's been a long time). Either you pay the debt or your nice Carrier gets repo'd. So don't buy one unless you're me who likes the Carrier as a mobile base and yet doesn't play ED often because I get bored of it quickly. Join a discord, make friends and savor your time playing ED because it is an ocean wide yet ankle deep with no new ships in years. Don't buy the Odyssey expansion, you're better off playing Star Citizen or Helldivers 2 if you want that kind of boots-on-the-ground experience. Odyssey is bland, empty, boring and the rock-paper-scissors dynamic with the firearms is ridiculous. But hey, now you have a mobile base that can also serve as your own personal shop, warehouse and even your BANK! Well...private bank...technically. You need to store your credits on your Carrier and from that the upkeep is paid. You can transfer credits remotely too which is neat.
