      LOL, this is the purpose for which I sought out this video; don't know modular but want to use VCV (plus a custom quasicrystal metronome, and maybe various xenharmonic scales) for work background music.

    Mutable Insteuments Marbles is a one-module alternative to your turing machine + quantizer + s&h + gate sequencer + attenuator + offset. Does all of it, cheaper, less hp. Ultimate generative modul imo.

    • @Datacustic
      @Datacustic 3 года назад +10

      Agree, but I think the idea is to deconstruct a little bit the principle behind generative using more basic modules. So each user can adapt to it with the individual tools ar hand. It would be cool do this all doepfer to get a step beyond.

    • @jc3drums916
      @jc3drums916 3 года назад +1

      I was thinking the same thing, but Marbles only has three gate outputs. The extra gate outputs would be cool to use with Stages in Ouroboros mode, although that would require replacing some modules with more modulation sources. Maybe a Transient Modules u4R or Plum Audio Apex in the 1U row in place of the Pointeuse (and USB power), although they're a lot less powerful and versatile than Stages. Or replace Chord Organ with a couple of 2hp LFOs, and switch Rings into Easter egg mode.

    • @jodo985
      @jodo985 2 года назад +1

      I was literally created a marbles vs turning machine pros and cons I think you summed it up. I do see the attraction and usefulness of the aTuring machine set up, especially if you already have the other compnents

    Just started building my modular, and even with just three modules, nothing is more satisfying than just sitting back and listening to one LFO modulate my 4ms Ensemble, with a little reverb and delay. I need more utilities. The 4ms Ensemble is soooo much fun. I plan on building my whole system around it! So glad I started doing this.

    • @jsleeio
      @jsleeio 3 года назад

      I don't have the Pulses expander (yet) but it occurred to me that when mixing the gates like this, you should get the opportunity to adjust how often small steps happen vs large steps - by mixing the more frequent pulses at a lower level (little trills?) and the infrequent pulses at a higher level. I was just tinkering with this idea in my Doepfer system with the A-149-1+2 but not terribly satisfactorily. I definitely need to spend more quality time with the A-149-1 manual! When combined with various outputs from a clock divider from the same original clock source, though... fun times to be had

    • @mixolydian2010
      @mixolydian2010 3 года назад

      @@jsleeio I love my A-149-1. Its great to self patch it taking the outputs and feeding them into a lfo or maths and fm the clock. You get little bursts of notes. Say with the lfo you take one of the 149 s outputs say SRV bottom output and mult the output to the 1v/oct input of your oscillator and the other to both input on maths 1 and use the EOR output of maths 1 to clock the 149. This is what i used on this tune i did ruclips.net/video/o17xHgle-9U/видео.html. Take it easy

    And another masterfully crafted tutorial!
    I simply can't keep from lauding your attitude towards those of us with no sight: like it ain't no thang - just a matter of fact.
    As a completely sightless synthesist deeply into this vast world of different possibilities, it's really nice to sense the appreciation of the fact as not an obstacle, though we really must be highly concious of the tools to choose in those modern times of huge amount of choices, but also touchscreens and deep menu systems.
    Anyway, keep up the good work: musically diverse and nicely narrated.

    • @mylarmelodies
      @mylarmelodies  3 года назад +2

      Thanks Aleksei, you're welcome - I've met a few electronic musicians without sight and so I'm conscious to watch my language when I say "you see this or that" without saying what I'm talking about (I still miss the occasional one though apologies!) and so try to narrate everything carefully - it makes it clearer for everyone to be fair! As these aren't reviews I tend not to talk about shortcomings (not really relevant to the purpose and I would argue there's really no 'bad' gear made these days), but quite often there are some gotchas with menus and led toggle states on some modules, I'll try to mention if I encounter them. In this it occurs to me the Pico Quant has a 'wraparound' menu which is a tricky aspect, but at least there are only 8 choices of quantised scale. Anyway thanks again!! x

    I once made a generative patch on a Buchla in the 80s on a piece for my Electronic Music class. It had 2 sequencers controlling each other's sequence rates, and the result was quite unpredictably "nature"-sounding, as far as I can describe it, like a jungle of unknown creatures. I think I have a cassette of the piece somewhere, but unfortunately I didn't record the patch. I wish I had access to a similar system so I could play with it some more.

    A note on stages: I learned the hard way that patching it right to left when using gated stages, but left to right when working with non-gated stages is better, because the moment you want to make a gated one (an envelope, for example), you find out you need to move all your single-stage LFOs around and it's a royal pain

    Loving these Suggested Systems vids. I’m a modular newbie, just feeling my way. My thing is Dark Ambient achieved primarily through manipulation of long form audio. Might you consider a Suggested System in the 62 HP format for audio mangling, granularisation, and general wrangling? I’ll be using an IPad for sequencing and probably for some audio processing too, so integrating that would be cool.

    Love this! I’ve finally got my small modular set up running and am getting ready to dive in and make sounds!
    Quick question - I was looking at the Music Thing Turing Machine just the other day and it seems amazing. Any experience with others that I might want to consider or is this the one? 2hp has a very basic one, but thinking I want a little more.
    Thanks again for the great content!!

      Mutable Instruments Marbles is a strong contender. I replaced my Turing Machine with expanders (pulses + volts) with Marbles and have not regretted it one bit! It might seems like a lot of hp real-estate for what it does, but trust me: it packs A LOT of functionality. There are also more compact versions from other companies (smallest I came across was 10hp).

    Hey Mylar, nice video. Explaining your process, (example, tuning to Rings, instead of the other way around) etc., .. interesting stuff. I can't make out the name at 36:00, that you recommended .. Matt someone? Who uses in Rings in anger? Who is this person? .. Thanks, much.

    Love your stuff! Any chance you could make a video with a suggestion for how to create a budget "generative drummer", which does not need to be programmed with a step sequencer? That would be awesome! During these pandemic times it would be wonderful to have a "mad drummer in a box" to jam with. :)

    Really great video sir. Im just about to enter into the modular world via a rainmaker and the same case. Just bored of normal FX and modular FX chains are drool worthy. Excited to see whats possible. That turning machine looks like a must have down the line. Very nice. I suppose I dont need a quant as Im using the case as an FX send and sending stuff in a key already plus the rainmaker has pitch control, right? Im amazed how many possibilites are available from such a small case! Awesome for newbies like meself!
