$1,400 JOB! - Bottega Veneta Plastic Tote (Makeover)

  • Interesting bag, this bag was 100% PVC. The diamond design was pretty cool but it appears that the glue they used just disintegrated the plastic over time. Customers request was to add Red suede somewhere didn’t matter where. So I came up with this design idea to make the bag one of a kind Bottega Vaneta Tote.

I didn’t think it was plausible to sew on PVC. I learned something new today.

    • @christopherfeatherley

It is! You just have to use leather prongs to mark your holes for a seam and use a stitching awl to puncture stitching holes. It behaves mostly like leather, minus the long term stretchable aspect.
I do believe leather sewing machines or heavy duty sewing machines can stitch on PVC (coated canvas), but that's far my field of expertise 😅

Very cool to add your own name on the inside of the bag! Watchmakers are known to do this when they service watches, ie mark the inside of the caseback.

Patent leather only peels when the owner does not take care of the handbag. I love Patent leather, I store my bags in a cool dark closet in a dust bag. I often wonder how do they store their bags, why are they so worn. I am not a fan of the color choice of red for this project…it reminds me of Christmas. You can't make a leather purse out of a plastic sow's ear Steve. That bag should have been made with leather in the first place in my opinion. I'm sorry, but this whole vegan thing really irks me! It's coming apart because the glue used to make it is slowly eating through the plastic.

some plastics use softeners to make it soft and pliable and that degrades over time together with other chemicals this can make degradation go faster than expected. some of these things may not be known at time of production. even oil from skin can degrade plastics look at the soft rubbery plastic/rubber on tools

Intentional tremor runs in my mom's family, she is 92 now and has ben shaking when making intentional movements since she was in her early 30s. She had a brother with it and her father had it. Her parental side of the family also had/have dupentrens contracture and mom has that too. I did not inherited the intentional tremor but I do have DT, luckily mom and I both suffer more from the nodules in our palms and less of the finger contractions issue, my mother's only living brother has badly contracted ring and pinky fingers on one hand, he may have them amputated. Anyway my mom gets along fine despite her shaking, only life modifications she's ever made is always drinking from a straw and using weighted utensils when she eats. I hope you make it to 92 and beyond!

The work you do requires a sharp blade and thats exactly what you and making. Its not like you are making a bad job due to your blade. I watch you as a person that has no clue about the work you do and enjoy watching a professional at work. I would never question your techniques or the products you use as i am in no position to do so. People need to chill out on complaining about the price of your repairs. I have a few questions at the bottom of this comment.
I am a seamstress (36yo). I have been repairing a lot of garments for years, my biggest requests are for jackets. I don't repair leather, I refer them to a qualified leather repair shop. I quote for many repairs and get barked at for my 'over priced and abhorrent pricing'. Reality is: you have an item you want fixed... I have the skills to fix that item because you are either unskilled or don't have the time too or both...
This happened in 2008. One guy asked me to fix a business jacket. The fabric was a cheaply made silk blend and as such, requires more time and patience to repair, not to mention higher quality threads, can't just use Walmart polyester thread😂... The entire lining needed to be removed and reduced 2 sizes (because he actually washed the jacket in water instead of dry-cleaning). He also wanted the arm holes adjusted which required the sleeves to be removed... and full measurements to adjust the jacket like he wanted. I quoted him $500 for about 20 hours of work and material cost of about $50. He tried to talk me down in price and I refused. He said he would pay $200. I asked him what he did as a profession: lawyer. I asked him if he would represent me in a case (made one up) and then asked him how much... He said $1500 flat fee. I then said: "What makes you think that I would pay $1500 for your services? What skills do you possess that make what you do work $1500 and not say $1000? Do you not think that my skills as a seamstress are not worthy of paying a fair price? You asked for my services and are refusing to pay my price, then I am declining service." I then handed him back his jacket and told him to go buy a new one.
My mentor from college was waiting to pay me for her jacket repair. I didn't actually have a bill for her. She had $100 out and I handed her her jacket and told her to keep the money because her time spent helping me as my mentor was worth the time I spent fixing her jacket. It was a simple fix anyway, unlike the lawyer's jacket.
Anyway, I don't think your prices are ridiculous. Neither do your customers... Otherwise, I don't think we would be seeing these types of videos. Your time is valuable and people don't understand how much time actually goes into fixing things. Especially when the time is edited down to 30-60 minutes for RUclips. I would be interested in seeing you so a video and actually tallying the hours spent on a project. That may help people understand what something like this project actually takes. I also feel like people don't understand how much leather costs... Not to mention all the other materials that go into a project like this: glue, thread, coffee😂, cleaners, leather conditioner(s), coffee😅, razor blades, stiffeners... Shop overhead. Do you include shipping in your costs or is that separate?

So very well said! For the last ~10+ years, I've been repairing/restoring old quilts; started out doing it for friends and eventually, it became a bit of a side business. Most months, I work on two or three quilts. It never ceases to amaze me how often people are shocked when I quote them $500-$700 to do massive amounts of work on a ragged threadbare quilt (such as replacing the batting, the backing, replacing multiple squares, cleaning mold, stains, etc. all while trying to match vintage fabrics and patterns and styles and stitching as close as possible) .. then come back with stupid comments like, "I'm willing to pay $50, no more". A *simple* repair of just resewing a few loose squares is about $50. Having said that ... most people are usually pleasantly surprised by what I quote and say something more along the lines of "really? That's all?" ... they just want their precious memory-filled quilt made by great-grandma to live and be loved for decades to come.

Hello. Beautiful job on the tote. I have been making things, sewing clothes, quilting, etc. alI me life. I recently found a niche of people on you tube who are making handbags, backpacks, wallets, pouches, things like that. The reason I’m telling you about these people is that you get a real good idea of what it takes to make the above. Everyone uses different materials: in the US, mostly quality vinyl, cloth, cork, waterproof fabrics. Some of the materials used are just tacky, but they are making these for specific customers. Other pieces are really amazing, just beautiful workmanship, beautiful fabric and hardware. They charge by the individual piece, and the highest prices I have seen from tutorials are around $250.00 to $300.00. They are worth those prices. There are custom bag makers in Asia who are making handmade pieces, custom orders, and they seem to be around $3-$500. They are not making fakes, they add their own name to their work. I’m trying to get a few quilts done so I can give a small handbag a try. I’m sure you have probably run across these (sewists), what they call themselves. It’s reassuring to know there are groups of people who see themselves as talented as any worker at a design shop. Love your channel. You also have some very nice machines.

About blades: Doing leather work, I use a No. 2 Xacto blade in an aluminum holder. (soon to be replaced by a brass one). The blades last forever because they are stouter than the No. 11 blades. I always strop the blade on leather with compound before starting. I keep the blade covered. I have no complaints about the sharpness of my blade. Why replace it when I can hone and strop a better cutting edge on it?

Triggered viewer voice....."Hey Man, why you sharpening a disposable blade? As much as you charge you should be using 10 new blades on every project. Stop being so cheap man!" LMAO. I love it when Steve triggers the masses!! Great video my dude!

First time commentor, long time channel watcher. A slight criticism on this video. I completely understand the "why" it cost X amount of money to modify and repair the bag in the video. My issue with is stating the $ amount for everyone to know. You have mentioned in previous vids people have their reasons for a repair. Maybe the customer would love to share the YT video of the repair however, avoid family friends, etc knowing what they paid. I personally would not want that shared. Otherwise, I have watched all your videos on your channel and always enjoy each one.
Please know that my comment about does not reflect anything negative upon you. Absolutely enjoy seeing all that you do!

I can't remember if he's said so before or if maybe it was in a comment in the past, but if I remember correctly, I believe that if customers don't want it publicized how much they paid, or if they don't want their shoe/bag/etc. repair on youtube, he honors that request.

Personally Steve, I like what you created better than the original. The red pops. I agree with the gang it would have been better in leather. But to each his own.

1400 to rebuild a $3k bag, make it one of a kind and make it look better than the original is actually a great deal 😂

Excellent work as always! Question - I recently bought a pair of second hand Church’s polished binder oxfords. Will that patent care spray prevent it from cracking? Thanks

Steves net zero and carbon neutral blade sharpening service 😅. I do the same thing, I've never seen you strop the blades, is that something you don't bother with or done off camera? Glad to see you let your artistic flair show. I think leatherwork is the ultimate in recycling as you are taking what is the waste product from food manufacturing and reusing it also you are extending the life of other products with it whether it's shoes or bags or equipment it's all being used. So as you said at the beginning you recycle. I'm finding pattern work to be more demanding and time-consuming than I first thought but I'm sticking with it, again as you said a mistake here will come back and bite you on the arse further down the line, so it's better to spend time perfecting your design before jumping in as paper and pencil is cheaper than leather. I am mocking up the full product on paper and then deconstructing it to create the final pattern then I will transfer it 😊to plastic sheets to be kept as a master. Loved this episode Steve thank you for Sharing and I hope you are enjoying your vacation. All the best from Scotland.
