I just had to laugh when the bagpiper stopped playing at 6:15 at the same time as you can hear a jet engine spooling down in the background. Perfect timing!

You've hit the mark yet again. You just seem to have the personality for it. And that's the word - you somehow make these videos personal, almost like it's one-to-one. I once stood at the top of a ski slope, in Rovaniemi on the Finnish Arctic Circle, and how anyone could launch themselves down that is beyond me.

Oslo, trains and that ski jump - you really have to look out a wonderful film called O Horten. It's all in there, and great fun. (How could it not be when the director's name is Bent Hamer?). The airport express train is impressive, and as expensive as you would expect. You can take an ordinary train, only a couple of stops, and doesn't take much longer, for a much lower price. It's also well worth getting an Oslo Pass, even for one day, covering entry to museums and all city transport. One way tickets are, again, an expensive way to do it.

Up at the top of that ski jump that's where you got the no no no no no, you almost got something else too but I couldn't put that here. What a beautiful city! And I agree, no wonder it's expensive takes money to stay that pretty. Can't wait for the ferry ride. You know I'm all about the journey. And what a fun thing, to be in a water cannon salute. Your visit to the ski-jump reminds me of the visit my son and I made to the ski-jump in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
I was amazed it was free to visit (can you imagine that in Britain?), but what I most remember is my then two year old son (in a pushchair after becoming tired of walking) asking me crossly after I had paused whilst pushing him up the hill to the top of the ski jump, "Why have we stopped Daddy? Come on!"

I visited Holmekollen many years ago they have certainly upgraded it. From my memory I had to climb up steps to the top. I certainly don't remember any lifts. Great times.

    • @ghanthor
      @ghanthor 6 месяцев назад

It's a completely new ski jump. The old one did have a lift too, but the final part to the top was steps, ski jumpers need to build those thigh muscles 😉.
Also, they could mechanically lower the flooring to adjust the speed of the ski jumpers.
The old one had an enclosed top, and when they tore it down (2008) the top enclosure was sold off but I don't recall what the buyer did with it.
The bottom part with the seating area becomes a small lake in the summer.

Steve that was so enjoyable. My teenage years were spent in Norway and Sweden. I lived in Oslo for 2.5yrs as a teenager so I was immersed in this video, especially Holmenkollen as I used to ski and sled the slops up there (not the ski jump though). That’s a newer ski jump than when I lived there. Great that they have a viewing platform at the top. Now I yearn to revisit.
What a treat for you with the arrival at Oslo with the water tank and bagpipes playing. I’d be intrigued by a cost breakdown on your trip videos.

One of the things I love about visiting the Scandinavian countries of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark is not just the incredible scenery and beautiful cities and towns, it's also the people. The vast majority are bilingual and unlike Germany, France and Italy, they don't get annoyed or arrogant if you cannot or struggle to speak the native language, they are extremely helpful and friendly too. So even if you cannot speak another language and are nervous about visiting other countries as a result, don't be, just visit the Scandinavian countries where you'll be welcomed.
As an addendum, I find The Netherlands to be the same, very warm and welcoming and full of stunning towns and cities and most there are also happy to speak in English too.

Way back when I was a youngster I went on the bus over to Cheltenham with my cousin and sister to watch the movie The Delinquents (Kylie Minogue film). For some reason it wasn't showing in our big cinema in Gloucester so we had to go to the dark side of the Golden Valley. As the bus was heading into Cheltenham along Gloucester Road Eddie the Eagle crossed over the road behind the bus, not on skis though, just on foot. We were all agog, "THERE'S EDDIE THE EAGLE" we exclaimed excitedly. None of the other passengers batted an eyelid!

Good trip Steve. I've visited Oslo on mid summers day when there was a marathon on so was given the penthouse in a hotel. It was luxury and never got dark. The castle next to the old central station, by the harbour, is also a great visit. Notice you could not afford a beer though! Notoriously expensive. There is a nice park near the Palace. And you are so right about scotrail windows. Looking forward to the next part on the ferry. Allan.

What a fantastic journey this is so far!! I'm really enjoying this one Steve.....lots of things that I love to travel on.....regional jets, fast modern trains & interesting metro lines & this just about covered it all. Oslo is gorgeous....clean & green, looks like a beautiful city for sure......like you, it would be nice to see the ski jump but you wouldn't get me to go down it on a couple of match sticks (I don't ski anyway to begin with) & I'm not sure I'd do the zip line either!! Anyway....thanks again & cheers mate...looking forward to the on-going story on this one!

Hi we used to have ticket vending machines on the stations.. quite sad that they removed them not so long ago. As a Oslo citizen I still use my transport card eventhough most people only use their smartphones as a ticket.
You should next time continue on the same metro line to the last station Frognerseteren next time. It's even more spectacular view from Holmenkollen upwards to Frognerseteren 😊

  • @NorwegianAviator

Wonderful video, Steve! A little tip. I recommend the commuter-train/InterCity-train as well as Flytoget. You save a few pounds on the ticket and the Journey is only 1-2 minutes longer (stops at the same station Lillestrøm before Oslo)

    • @dieselfan7406

@@JBFlytography From a fellow Scot who now calls Oslo home, I'd recommend downloading the Ruter app - by far the easiest way to get tickets and works on all our public transport (bus, train, t-bane (metro) and ferries). Also, thoroughly recommend taking the train Steve took all the way up to Frognerseteren, the last stop - fantasic views and a great cafe / restaurant at the top too. The walk down the hill, following the 1952 Olympics bobsleigh track, is also well worth it, it goes right past the Holmenkollen ski jump and practice hills.
