We watched your Gib video when it was first uploaded and grinned from start to finish. Last Friday we managed to achieve our goal of visiting Gib and seeing it for ourselves. I booked my Faroes trip the same week after seeing your trip there. I had studied the language for years and never plucked up courage to go. Life-changing. Just watched this and booking trip to Gibraltar. Your videos are fabulous (even if you think something went wrong in this one!). Thank you so much!
A great, well presented vlog. We went to Gib last April and the road tunnel is now open, so only pedestrians cross the runway. We loved it so much, we're returning in May. Saved money on flights (thanks to my lad working at Easyjet) so we're staying on the Sunborn as a one-off to celebrate a big birthday. Annoyingly, we have an airport the other end of town but they no longer fly to Gib & the train to Gatwick costs more than the flights. Hopefully, the wife will pluck up the courage to go up the cable car this time
The day was not a total loss we got to see that magnificent view from atop the rock and your accommodation looks great, thanks for taking us along and stay safe, cheers.
Ya know, stuff happens. The way you handled the adversity and compensated by revising your plan was marvelous. I think I may have been sitting on a stone wall crying in the heat. I enjoyed your trip and don't think you need to apologize at all. You sure walked a lot. Can't wait for the continuation.
When I was working in Inverness people used to say Gibraltar fell under the Highlands region for several shops, including morrisons so they managed the shops in Gibraltar from the Inverness or Perth office, always found that interesting.
I enjoyed your trip to Gibraltar. Even though you didn’t meet your travel goals I met mine by viewing an area that I won’t be able to visit. I loved especially the airport runway that allows pedestrian and car access and the tourist viewing areas that allows a fantastic view of Gibraltar and the areas below.

Spent 2 years in Gibraltar back in the mid 80s. It was great back then, and i could travel all over Spain, Portugal and Morocco on my Motorbike. Its changed so much, so think i will give it a miss
We went to Gibraltar 2 years back and you're right that big cruise ship stays where it is as its a hotel now. The hotel's can be expensive but we stayed in a reasonable Airbnb and we found it was easy to get around by bus and the food wasn't too badly priced.
I haven't been to Gib for over 20 years, so it was great to see it again. Thanks for taking us along. For a person who doesn't like heights, you seemed to cope fine with the cable car. £18 return is a bit steep, isn't it?
Aye, I was backed into a corner with the cable car - with my limited time it was the only option, but wasn't happy about it :D Cheers Scott, ps I'm half way through your book already, and I'm normally a slow reader!
Crossing the runway on foot way back in 2000 was a memorable experience, especially when on our return we watched countless smugglers hiding cigarettes on their person before going through the frontier 🥴 We so liked exploring all aspects of Gibraltar and “the rock”. Thank you for rekindling many memories. Oh, did you know that a new passenger tunnel opened this year. No more crossing the runway on foot anymore.

My only time in Gib was on one-day stop in a West Med seaonal relocation cruise, and then on to Madeira and Miami for the winter Caribbean season schedule. We walked a mile or so from the cruise dock into town including the runway crossing under grey skies to learn that the cable car was closed due to rain and high winds, so we went shopping in those British shops for reading matter on the cruise and both bought leather blazers. Rather a disappointment, though we definitely helped the Gibraltan economy! Glad you saw the Barbary apes. It's said that if they leave the rock, the British will too.
You may have been disappointed in your day in Gibraltar, but I wasn’t! I have never been there so had no idea about the runway/road situation and truly enjoyed the views from the Top of the Rock. I’d heard of the monkeys but had only seen them in still photos, so cool to see them so close, in video. I’m glad you had a nice weather day! Thanks for traveling and sharing! Greetings from Oklahoma, USA!
Thank you for showing me Gibraltar. Never been there but always interested. I didn’t realise the Rock was that large. And I am angry about the misleading road signs!!!❤
I went to Gibraltar in the 1970's and thoroughly enjoyed my holiday. It was not so built up then, and they. the Gibraltarians certainly did not want to go back to being Spanish. Went to the Casino on the rock where I won £22 on the fruit machine, bearing in mind it was the 70's it was a nice win, and the cave which was spectacular. The monkeys are something else had to be careful of how much you declared to them. Also went to the Trafalgar cemetery still being kept all those years later. I really did enjoy that holiday.
I've been here before and its an experience you have to do, the British culture so close to spain is such a unique feeling, also theres police and policia there...some very cool and random querks. The hike up the rock can be achieved by cable cart, taxi or the obvious walking, I walked up and in the summer/april times, it can get pretty hot so have some food and drink with you, some excellent views from above and meeting the monkeys near the top is worth it in my opinion.
Steve, I've landed on Gib by flying AROUND the Rock, now THAT is an amazing approach. I applaud your efforts. I walked down from the Caves and it was killing. Gibraltar is the place my Scottish ancestors went to and I was there doing research. I love your travels.
As someone who both worked and lived in Gib preplanning the Med Steps would have saved you a lot of Time and trouble. A cab ride from the Airport to the Pillars of Herculese or a Bus ride could do the same. While I was stationed in Gib with the Military we used to climb the Med Steps at least once a week. Later in life I returned to Gib to live and work there for a few years. I enjoyed it and would return again sometime before I am measured for my Coffin.
About 20 years ago I used to be a holiday rep and worked for a while in southern Spain. I used to nip across to Gibraltar about once a month to stock up with British food items from Sainsbury’s. I used to leave my car on the Spanish side and walk across because it was so much quicker than going through Spanish border control with a car.
Nice! I remember going there when I lived in Spain and it was so comforting to be able to buy British food in a British supermarket - a much as I love Spanish food, it's amazing how quickly you miss home!
Absolutely not a disaster from we, the viewers', point of view, although sorry for you that things didn't to go plan. Went to Gibraltar in 2005, thought then that it couldn't be more built up, but looks like I was wrong! Looking forward to the Ceuta video, and regretting that I didn't do it myself when I had the chance. THANK YOU for sharing!
Cheers Michael! Aye, I don't think the construction ever stops there! Ceuta was fun, I hope you like that video despite another 'whistle stop' tour where I don't see very much :D
Awww, so sorry you couldn't go up into the trails, but I love the photos and captions with the Macaques. I love the one who was channeling your disappointment and the one eating the potato chips. We did this trip about 4 yrs ago, went to the top, ate a great lunch at some restaurant there, watching the planes on the runway, which was super cool. I did have a hitchhiker on my backpack, apparently my daughter left something (food) in my side pocket and this big fella jumped on me, no matter how fast I tried to swing/spin myself he never fell off. I bet I am on lots of videos or photos, but will have to make a plug for LLBean's great backpack, not a tear or mark from the macaques claws. Best parts was the meal and of course seeing all the macaques, though walking across a runway like that was pretty darn cool too. Safe travels Steve, here's hoping you can do it again some day!
Great video Steve. Visited Gibraltar and La Linea in June, had a great time. We did a coach tour which took us to Europa Point and to the top of the Rock. It was also good to get our passport stamped in La Linea.
I've spent a lot of time in Gib over the years. There is a much easier walk to the top of the rock from town, up the Union Jack steps. It's also worth going to see the Northern Defences which have been cleared over the last few years, before that they were known as the jungle and your parents would give you hell if they knew you'd been there.
Ach I wish I'd had more time to explore! (and a better idea of how to get where I was wanting to go) I was just following a very rusty memory from an enjoyable trip to the Med Steps :)
He's right about the signage though. I think you need to allow a little more time to get your bearings with Gibraltar. There is a lot to see in a very small space, but you are better off asking the locals, or get on a bus and ask the driver, they are fantastic, they know everyone and everything, and the passengers will definitely get involved in helping you.
Another great video! Sorry about your long uphill hike, and disappointment in not getting the the Mediterranean Steps, but I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the sights there. The room in Spain looked pretty cool, too.
Hi Steve Brings back memories of our trip to Gib 5 years ago. I can relate to the hilly walking, in the end all by taxi as were staying at the Rock hotel which you stood outside as you were trying to make your way up the hill. We never made the cable car, but your video showed us what we missed, thank you. Regards Crawford
It is a nice place to go and see what Gibraltar cause it is nice and sunny there and having your lunch and the rock is very beautiful to see from a plane and have a nice time
That's typical of the UK too, they wait until you get to the road closure then they tell you the road ahead is closed instead of telling you in good time to allow you to go another route. The roads dept are as thick as mince! Very frustrating! Good video Steve, been to Gib many times and love it.
You have my sympathy, Steve. And it wasn't a "terrible" video! It's always interesting to see places that we don't always get the chance to travel to, even if you weren't able to make it to the one place you really wanted to show us. It's a few years now since my wife and I spent a few days with friends in Gib. We were also able to spend some time in their beach house along the Spanish coast and take a trip up to Ronda. But we didn't get to see the Mediterranean steps! Looking forward to the next instalment...
There are online booking bag storage options in Gib, I've used 'radical storage' in Ocean Village area. The bus you took to Europa point actually stops very close to the windmill hill/Jewish cemetery entrance to the nature reserve, which is where you access the med steps. It isn't impossibly far from the cable car station to reach the top of the med steps if you wanted to do it in reverse. That Engineer road closure was catching out locals as well as tourists 😂
Hi Steve, best laid plans. Still, you've got a great wee place for the night, £25 is not bad. The one and only time I was at Gibraltar was July 1971. I was on a budget holiday in Morocco for two weeks and we had a day trip to Gibraltar - ferry from Tangiers. We didn't have a lot of time to look round and I was always planned to go again at some time in the future. Well, still waiting to go back. That's really cool waiting at a level crossing and instead of a train, a plane goes by. Thanks for sharing your experience Steve and looking forward to part 2. All the best.
So sorry you had that long walk up only to find it closed. The cable car a godsend and it was lovely to see the views from up there. Thanks Steve! Oh and that road/flight path - wow😮
Not an "awful video" at all! Thoroughly enjoyed it. Great footage of the landing. I know you were disappointed, but thanks for recording it and showing us around. New to your channel so I have quite a lot of catching up to do! Better than any TV travel shows! Cheers. Vivian
did two tours fond memories first one border was closed then second the border was opened nightlife on the rock flows across the border it is an eye opener, thats where I leant to lay back and let the world fly by.
Never mind Steve, still a very enjoyable video. Love the cable car and the runway cross. £150 is average for London, not bad for £25 Thanks for the rock view on flight
No need for apology big guy! Your videos are always fun, excellent and insightful. The beloved Scottish poet Robert Burns once wrote that, " the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry". Detours can offer different blessing and joy. Thank you 🙏.
Lucky you had a quiet flight to be able to swap sides 👍 I recon where you got turned back on your walk up to the steps was the the spot in "The Living Daylights" when Bond is hanging onto the top of a Land Rover that's on fire!
I just love Gib, watching that landing, and the cable car brought back so many memories. The hotels are overpriced, I think. One day, I'll live on a yacht, in the Marina......
I’m not quite sure why you’re apologizing. By unearthing pitfalls you probably saved a lot of people a lot of time. Being able to adapt is skill valuable to travelers, and I can say I’ve learned more about Gib in the last few minutes than at any other time over the past few decades. Except for a chase scene in a Bond flick, this is the most I’ve ever seen of the place. Thank you!
Thanks Steve for another great video even if you think it was a pore one for us that have never been to Gibraltar I love it and look forward to the second half soon
Please don’t apologize because traveling involves adventure and things not going as we planned and I find it interesting when things do not go properly. You always apologize but it is not your fault and I appreciate the sense of adventure.
I am in Gibraltar at the moment thanks to your plan to stay in La Linea but the cable car is closed for 2 years apparently they are replacing the whole thing
Hi Steve great vídeo not a disaster at all I’m from Gib but you are right everything under construction but the upper rock is best via taxi y tour bus if you want to go walking is really warm today in November 2022 we having hit weather up to 26 degrees celsius
Having walked down from the tunnels to the town centre a few years ago I certainly wouldn't attempt the trip going up on foot. And, have they still not finished the runway diversion tunnel? I though it was due to be open by now so that those traffic jams were a thing of the past.
Wow Steve, you found a new way to suffer for us. I really feel for you in this video. Plus your normal excellent organisational skills let you down for once! Loved the view of the landing as the scale of the rock is hard to judge. Great cable car ride showing how high it is. Saw some bond locations up the rock though so very worthwhile. Can't wait to see where you go to next. Allan.
Hi Steve, Well I enjoyed it. I was in Gib a few times during my "Navy Years". And I've stayed at the Lighthouse, during my "Lighthouse Years". Take care, and stay safe
That brought back long ago memories. Bought my sail boat in Gib in 1986. Stayed there a few months. The gates to Spain had been locked for a few years so fly expensive GB Airways (only carrier into Gib about once a day). I see the marina and airport area much change. Old town the same. Cable car the way to go. Pity you had no time to go into the old army tunnels dug for the defense of Gib in WW2. Well worth the visit.
Cheers for sharing Alex! What an exciting time that would have been picking up a boat there! Aye, my own fault for not allocating more time, I had a very specific plan and it went a bit awry! :D
Nothing to be sorry about Steve myself and my wife Pat loved this video as it brought back memories of our visit back to Gibraltar in the 80's ,we were on holiday in Morocco and visited Gib for the day and loved it , anyway good excuse to go back lol 😂
Fabulous. I am now going to dig out my pics and video from 1997 and compare the changes to your views. So many high rise buildings now, wow. Fair bit more to see in Gib so a return is a must Steve. That accommodation looked perfect for nipping in and out of Gibraltar. Looking forward to the next video. All the best. Alastair.
I'm going there next month, overland from Lisbon then fly from Gib to Gatwick. I'm also staying on the Spanish side because cheaper. This video was useful, thanks for posting :)
I've been there but from Luton with the now defunct Monarch Scheduled. The airport, Gibraltar not Luton!,is a military base and they close the road with an armoured car when planes come in the road road being covered by the heavy machine gun atop the armoured car which I'd guess was a .50 BMG style of gun.
Best of luck Steve, Ive been to Gib twice and to be honest I won't be going there again. Say no more. I had a friend who I used to play football with in my younger days who came from Gibralter, his name was Wenceslaus Faria and also a Spanish chap called Manuel Casales who was a brilliant player…….. I still keep in touch with Manual, what amazes me as he has lived here 50 years but still has a thick spanish accent……. wonderful

Thanks so much for sharing, happy memories :)
Thanks mate! Didn’t go to plan, but all part of the adventure :)
Thanks Crawford, glad to share some familiar sights :)
It is a nice place to go and see what Gibraltar cause it is nice and sunny there and having your lunch and the rock is very beautiful to see from a plane and have a nice time
Agreed Elaine :) I loved the landing and takeoff so much by the way!
Lovely sunny video, that was alot of walking for you in that heat, love seeing the monkeys,
That's typical of the UK too, they wait until you get to the road closure then they tell you the road ahead is closed instead of telling you in good time to allow you to go another route. The roads dept are as thick as mince! Very frustrating! Good video Steve, been to Gib many times and love it.
Oh I was so frustrated at the time :D
I’ve been to Gibraltar. The planes drive over the main road and whenever a plane lands or takes off the road barriers are down to stop the traffic.
Thanks Barney! I was disappointed at the time, but it was still a fun adventure!
Thanks so much for the info Oliver! I need to have a better Plan B in place for next time!
Cheers Paul! I remember doing your Tangiers crossing years ago, but Tangiers was just too scary for this young naive lad :D
So sorry you had that long walk up only to find it closed. The cable car a godsend and it was lovely to see the views from up there. Thanks Steve! Oh and that road/flight path - wow😮
Your videos always informative and interesting
These monkeys 🐒 are so funny 😆 like little people sitting eating the crisps 😂
Not an "awful video" at all! Thoroughly enjoyed it. Great footage of the landing. I know you were disappointed, but thanks for recording it and showing us around. New to your channel so I have quite a lot of catching up to do! Better than any TV travel shows! Cheers. Vivian
Well, I dont know about you Steve, or anyone else, but I really enjoyed it. Great video,as usual.
Thanks so much Martin, appreciate it!
did two tours fond memories first one border was closed then second the border was opened nightlife on the rock flows across the border it is an eye opener, thats where I leant to lay back and let the world fly by.
Nice visit to yet another randomish destination. Always a pleasure traveling with you. t🛬⛰🚠🚶♀
It was a lovely video as I know gib it was great to see it again thanks
Never mind Steve, still a very enjoyable video. Love the cable car and the runway cross. £150 is average for London, not bad for £25 Thanks for the rock view on flight
Cheers John! These things happen eh? On with the next one!
No need for apology big guy! Your videos are always fun, excellent and insightful. The beloved Scottish poet Robert Burns once wrote that, " the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry". Detours can offer different blessing and joy. Thank you 🙏.
Ah very true! Thanks for that :)
No need to apologize my friend. This was a lovely video, well put together, and the vagaries of travel add interest. See you next time.
Aye I guess it all adds to the adventure, but very gutted at the time :D
Lucky you had a quiet flight to be able to swap sides 👍 I recon where you got turned back on your walk up to the steps was the the spot in "The Living Daylights" when Bond is hanging onto the top of a Land Rover that's on fire!
Oh I need to go watch this now! Lucky it's movie weather just now...
I just love Gib, watching that landing, and the cable car brought back so many memories.
The hotels are overpriced, I think.
One day, I'll live on a yacht, in the Marina......
I still fancy a wee trip there, but am more excited for the adventure to the next enclave if it’s where am thinking and suggested a while back 😅
Cheers! I don't see much on the next trip, but am very impressed... :)
Wht a fantastic trip Steve, really wants to make me want to go To Gibralta for a few days , looking foreward to part 2 .
Thanks Alan!
You are so correct, things happen when you travel. Some are good, some not so much. Thanks for sharing.
Very true, at the time I was a bit gutted, but it's all part of the adventure :)
Thank you!
Thanks a lot Daniel :)
Never seen Gibraltar so now I have it looked a very busy place wish I had your stamina x thanks for showing us theese places x
Thanks Jeanette! Not quite as planned but still a fun wee adventure :)
@@steve-marsh I really enjoy watching these adventures that you go on Steve I get to see places that I would never see x so thanks
Looking forward to your trip to Ceuta. A place I have always wanted to visit.
Cheers Brendan! I don't see much but it was still a fun trip :)
Thanks Steve for another great video even if you think it was a pore one for us that have never been to Gibraltar I love it and look forward to the second half soon
Thanks Wayne!
Oh, cut that out! We love all of your adventures, even the bad ones. The recent train trip to London and back was particularly droll. :-)
That’s a fantastic hat you’re wearing in this vlog! Always great content!
Cheers John :)
No need to apologize we enjoyed the view and journey 1👍
Hi Steve great vídeo not a disaster at all I’m from Gib but you are right everything under construction but the upper rock is best via taxi y tour bus if you want to go walking is really warm today in November 2022 we having hit weather up to 26 degrees celsius
The bus service daily pass is reasonable and goes up to the Mediterranean steps
Well done Steve, great views.. don't worry about things not going to plan...tomorrow is another story.
Cheers.
So true mate! Cheers :)
Gibraltar looked like an amazing place! I would love to travel there someday.
I was here 40 years ago changed a bit on the top of the rock you met the resident RAF Regiment then.
Having walked down from the tunnels to the town centre a few years ago I certainly wouldn't attempt the trip going up on foot.
And, have they still not finished the runway diversion tunnel? I though it was due to be open by now so that those traffic jams were a thing of the past.
Happy New Year to you both! Thank you for this video.
The walk ughhhh. That looks like a brutal haul. Thanks again for the video.
Cheers Robert!
Allan.
Cheers Allan! Really lacking a 'plan b' in this one :D
This brings back memories of visiting here with my mum. I found out when we got back to Spain, she'd smuggled some cuban cigars out of there.
Hi Steve, Well I enjoyed it. I was in Gib a few times during my "Navy Years". And I've stayed at the Lighthouse, during my "Lighthouse Years". Take care, and stay safe
No way! I've said it before but I'll say it agin - what a great career! :)
2:24 That footage absolutely rocks mate.
Doing Gibraltar and Ceuta in one trip is a trip I was planning to do myself, so looking forward to seeing how it works out.
Cheers! I wish I'd taken more time, that's my only regret - with the heat I travel slower :D
@@steve-marsh tickets booked now for October 23, sadly EasyJet don't go from Edinburgh anymore so we're trekking down to Manchester.
Sorry it was a bit of a rough trip Steve...really enjoyed the video though...thanks for all you do to bring us along!! Cheers!
Thanks so much for that Mary! :)
Nothing to be sorry about Steve myself and my wife Pat loved this video as it brought back memories of our visit back to Gibraltar in the 80's ,we were on holiday in Morocco and visited Gib for the day and loved it , anyway good excuse to go back lol 😂
Aye exactly! Cheers Jim!
Alastair.
Thanks Alastair! Yeah, as always my limited time and focus on one specific path ended up being my undoing!
I'm going there next month, overland from Lisbon then fly from Gib to Gatwick. I'm also staying on the Spanish side because cheaper. This video was useful, thanks for posting :)
So glad it was helpful, have a great time!
Brilliant video it was great seeing a bit of Gibraltar 👍 thanks Steve
Cheers James, only sorry I couldn't show you my favourite bit!
No failure! Great view from the top.
Steve, don't worry. That view from the top was worth it. Thank you.
Thank you Charles!
Love everything you share and you are definitely my favourite RUclipsr. Thanks Steve 😁
Richard thanks so much man!
I still keep in touch with Manual, what amazes me as he has lived here 50 years but still has a thick spanish accent……. wonderful
Superb! Thanks for sharing David :)
No need for an apology. Your video was great as usual. Actually, all your vids are great.
Really appreciate it, thanks!
Please please don't feel so disappointed. Still a fantastic video with great views. Really enjoyed this one
Thanks Alister! Disappointed at the time, but still a fun wee adventure!
That was really interesting. Gib is on my hitlist. That room looked great for £25. Look forward to part 2.
Cheers Andrew! Well worth a visit, but maybe you’ll get to the places I didn’t! :)
