I was born in Montrose at Charleton Maternity Hospital. We lived in Christies Lane, moving on the Brechin City and the eventually to Bury in Lancashire where my Dad had been stationed during a small part of the War. This is where he met my Mum. We frequently went there for holidays when I was a kid and up to my twenties. This brings back so many happy memories and your right it hasn't changed too much over the years. Thanks so much for doing this video. It was great to hear and see places I know and remember. I love Montrose and I am proud to be Scottish. I am not well enough to get back now so this video was great. Keep well and safe. James.

I‘m so happy that you featured Bamse in this Video. In early April of 2022 I was planning to visit North Cape in the very north of Norway. When I arrived in Honningsvag, the last village before North Cape (located on 71 degrees north) the road up to North cape was closed due to snow and ⛈️. I traveled 2500 km to get there and the last 30 km were closed😢. But as so often when travelling, the real magic happens when things don‘t go to plan. I discovered a statue of a St. Bernhards Dog in this little village at the end (or beginning) of Europe and wanted to find out more about it. So I learned that there is also another statue of Bamse in Montrose and now you showed it to me. thank you so much, Steve. After learning about Bamse (and visiting the northernmost supermarket in Europe and buying dried cod) I wasn‘t disappointed anymore not to reach North Cape.

I grew up in Edinburgh as a kid, moving to outside Montrose as a teenager. I love visiting both now but for very different reasons. In many ways, I've come to appreciate Montrose more having left it some time ago in search of employment! It's a much overlooked town with stunning scenery just beyond it. You'll no doubt be posting vids of St Cyrus beach in its many moods and stunning sunrises. The wildlife centre overlooking Montrose basin is utterly addictive. Then there's the Angus glens, the Grampians and over to the Cairngorms. It's also surprisingly well connected for a small town. Few of my friends believe me in that you can board a train in Montrose and never get off until London (if that's your thing). The East coast line through Montrose, both north and south as some of the best seascape scenery you can experience from a train. Good luck to you both and enjoy that space.

You can also join the train to Plymouth (or Penzance if it’s running that far) which I think is the longest journey in the uk.
As you say so much on the doorstep, but not a million miles to the big cities.

I used to see the Penzance train pulling in and did think how remarkable that 2 small towns were connected by one train, yet so far apart. I don't think it runs now and I think the best you can do is 1 change at Waverley but perhaps Steve will prove me wrong.

Hi Alicija and Steve thanks for all your videos. My wife and I really enjoy all your adventures. We spent a month in Scotland last year and fell in love with the land and people. We spent 18 days this past May and going back in October for another 24 days. We are getting too old to rough it, so we enjoy the variety of B&Bs and inns. We have been re-visiting your videos and taking good notes. This trip will start in Islay to visit our favorite smokey whiskies. Then to Oban working our way north to the west side of the NC500. We plan three days from Kyle to Thurso and then take the ferry to Orkney staying for a few days. Once back on the mainland, work our way south to Inverness and then along the east coast to Aberdeen. Never been to Aberdeen so it will be interesting to explore. We then head south to Edinburgh on the coast road and stop in Montrose to see your lovely town. After three days in Edinburgh, we wind up in Glasgow for our flight back home to California. Again, thanks for your videos and keep up the good work.

@@mick68 Click on SteeveMarsh's name to go to his channel, then Videos. You can look through where he has been in the West Coast, but it can be bad for the midge. If you are travelling between the isles, check the timetables of the ferries and be prepared to have an alternate plan, it only needs one ferry not to run. Mull is nice for a day visit, but I go via Fishnish - Lochaline ferry, it is narrow roads and involves two ferries. the Corran ferry just below Ft Willian is the first very short ferry, it is strange crossing it at night!! But if you don't like a bit of an adventure or driving on narrow roads, leave from Oban, but it is not so exciting.
Make up your own route around the Islands, or just go right around the West Coast and across the top of Scotland and down the East Coast.

Lived in Montrose as a kid 1978-1980. Have many happy memories of riding my purple Raleigh Chopper from Borrowfield where we lived down to the beach and all around town, really. I loved playing in those sand dunes. Took my mum back for some nostalgia in May and we did some of the same walk you did. It’s lovely down by the beach and golf course - some beautiful homes and so peaceful. Saw both my old schools: Borrowfield Primary and Montrose Academy. The high street was a bit sad and shabby though - mum was saying there were lots of nice shops when we lived there. Now just charity shops and pound shops mainly. No criticism of Montrose - it’s been the fate of many town centres (you should see the state of Paisley’s where I live now!). You’re right, Greggs was the highlight. We went into the Market Arms for a drink too! My mum was reminiscing of course and told me my wee brother went fishing in Ferryden one day and rode his bike all the way home to Borrowfield because he needed a pee! 😂 I think you made a great choice - over all Montrose is a nice town in a beautiful setting. I remember saying to mum, I could live here again. I hope you’ll both be very happy there. 🙂

Masons begin their masonic lives in straightforward Lodges and after a while, usually once they've done the first three degrees of Masonry, join a Royal Arch Lodge which has the next levels of degrees. There are several more after Royal Arch, such as Rose Croix and, the inimitable Knights Templar.
The sign in Montrose probably sat above the entrance to the meeting place for the Royal Arch Lodge that met there. If there is a Royal Arch number on the sign, it would be possible to trace what happened to them. All Lodges have a name and number. The lower the number, the older the Lodge. I hope this helps explain it a bit for you. The black andd white squares denote the tiling of the floor found in all lodges. I can't see much more from your video.

So you’ve escaped the city! Good for you both. Montrose looks like a bonny wee town. I’ve travelled past it many times on the train but never stopped to check it out. Think I need to put it on my must do list.
Scotland’s East Coast tends to be ignored by many in favour of the West Coast and Highlands. It’s a stunning part of the country and deserves to be more widely known.

Inverbervie, Gourdon and of course Stonehaven always worth a visit as i know you know. The Grampian area is full of castles, and so many lesser known ones like Gight, Glenbuchat, Towie Barclay. I could go on but so many. There is so much to discover in the Angus area as well. Live across the pond but love the history as well as the coast. Love your videos!

Greetings from Adelaide, South Australia, we are having a cold winter averaging 12/13 at the moment, summer however averages in the mid to high 30’s and we normally get bursts of 40+ degree days. Hi Steve, First of all welcome to Montrose and I'm sure you'll enjoy living here. I noticed a couple of things while watching your video that I thought I'd mention to you. While you were walking towards the Bamse statue just beside the shopping trolley you passed a brown bench shaped like the bow of a boat. That bench was fabricated and welded by myself and my boss and was made in memory of a local guy who worked at the harbour all his life until he sadly passed away. Also on top of the library building there is a weather vane which was refurbished by my myself and my boss back in 2019 I think it was as part of the library upgrade works. So it was good to watch your video and remind me of the history of this place. Maybe some day you should take a trip up Edzell way to a place called The Rocks of Solitude and then head into Glen Esk and have a walk to Loch Lee. The peace and quiet there is fantastic and excellent scenery too. There's so much I could tell you about Montrose as I'm sure plenty others can tell you too. Oh and I'm a born and bred Gable Endie so if I can help with anything just let me know.
