Another great video. I remember when I was a little girl living in Northern Ireland my Dad pointing out Scotland to us from one of the beaches there. I was fascinated that another country could be so close lol.
I'm having a giggle here, because I have looked over to the Mull of Kintyre from Northern Ireland (Giants Causeway) and said "I can't believe that's Scotland " 🤣🤣 Glad you took us there, because no bloody way we'd be attempting that road! Thanks for another wonderful adventure.
@@steve-marsh if you're going to the Giants Causeway, ask a local where to park because the carpark fees are outrageous now. I'm sure the weather will be lovely, if it's not then just head to Bushmills lols 😆
Kintyre is a beautiful part of the world. As a whisky fan, I always go to Campbeltown. Did you notice the beautiful Victorian villas round about? A sign that in the 19th Century, Campbeltown was the richest burgh in Scotland. You can still see shells of closed distilleries that shut a hundred years ago -even Tesco is built on part of one. And of course a lot of us know that the greatest distillery of them all, Springbank is in the wee town. You parked outside the cinema which is the oldest in Scotland. We tend to stay in Tarbert is it’s a great place to do Islay from, go up to Oban and come in or go via Arran. When we go to Campbeltown we go down the east coast of Kintyre as the drive is so spectacular travelling south. You need a trip to Arran!
There are probably others like me, old geezers with a few health issues, who can no longer put in the miles as you do. You must have a pair of strong and healthy legs to cover the miles up hill and down dale. All your shots are balanced and sensitively filmed, with enough commentary to stimulate interest in each section and a good choice of music. Keep up the good work.
Sailed there a number of times... always known Gigha as Gee ya, wouldn't proclaim it to be right, but all our sailing friends referred it the same! Fantastic place and the sand and swimming outstanding! Very little tide and quite a sheltered anchorage!
Linda McCartney memorial garden on Route 66, no less! I'm gettin' my kicks. 27:00 - Dude, you need Wellies. Thanks for this video. My ancestors are from Kintyre.
I enjoyed the trip so very much. Beaches, ferry rides, scenery, a beautiful old graveyard, a castle, towns, I think you covered it all. Thanks for taking us along.
Shame you had to rush on and off Ghiga. I took my bike there - one of the most attractive small islands I have ever seen. Full of wild flowers and tiny sandy bays.
Smiles in the sunshine and tears in the rain Still take me back to where my memories remain Flickering embers grow higher and higher As they carry me back to the Mull of Kintyre
OH MY HEART! Much love from Nova Scotia Canada 🇨🇦 I got to go round the Mull when visiting Lochgilphead back in the early 90s. Visited Tarbert, Skippness and took the ferry to Aaron and spent the night. We toured OBAN as well. Our friend from Lochgilphead was a Campbell and we are MacIsaac 😮 😂 Thank you for the memories
Your channel has the best destressing affect, better than any potion, poison, or analytical person. Love Scotland, can't travel there anymore, it's like being on holiday in my own living room.😍
My father was from Campbeltown and I still have an aunt who lives there. Thanks for the reminder of all the places I visited when we used to go up for a fortnight on our summer holidays (50/60 years ago) all the way from Bedfordshire when I was a young lad. When you were in Saddel are you sure it wasn’t the castle you were looking for, and the small beach there is I believe where the Campbeltown Pipe Band played whilst accompanying some Liverpudlian chap on a number one smash hit record…..his name escapes me for the moment……….Thanks again🤔😂👍
Thanks Steve for showing us another wonderful spot in Scotland. I'm not sure how people have the courage to drive some of those roads. Brent informed me while we were watching this, that Campbellton is New Brunswick, Canada (our home province) was named after Campbeltown in the Mull of Kintyre. Obviously NB spells it differently but this was something I did not know. Many settlers from Kintyre came to the northern NB area when they emigrated to Canada. I guess Brent has a few ancestors from Kintyre, (probably why he knows this, It's like living with Wikipedia! 🙄). We learn so much about the different areas of Scotland from your videos! Keep 'em coming!
I lived in Campbeltown for a few years, still returning when I can. (Last was just in June). The drive is fantastic but does it really need a label to attract people? I'm always wary when we create another "Route" as in some instances the roads are just not suitable. For those that wish to visit Kintyre, please do. I love sitting on Westport beach and watching the sun and looking out to Islay (another place I've lived), Jura, and Gigha. Btw Gigha is pronounced Gee'ah. ;)
We used to holiday in Campbeltown/ Kintyre in the late 60's and we used to start the long journey on the Erskine ferry. As a wee boy the whole journey seemed to last for ever. Lovely area though and quiet. I agree with you about all this "route" creation. If anyone wants to go, just go! It's not difficult.
@@alancumming6407 I still have a bottle of Whisky distilled (uisge beatha) at Campbelltown. That Distillery is long gone now but a wee dram ever now and again; and you know you are alive. I am a committee member of the Ardbeg Distillery and entitled to a free dram every time I go back. My problem is being so far away. I have hidden my 17 Year old bottle of Ardbeg away which I will flush doon ma throat when I am about to breath my last. I have a could of sons in law who periodically carry out a search for my whisky.
so agree, its ruined so many places AND the welcome many get as the locals are fed up to the back teeth with the inconsiderates that leave disgusting waste everywhere
Steve, you’re so lucky having such beauty virtually on your doorstep. I have to travel several hours to visit those amazing places. I fell in love with Scotland when I finally visited The Highlands and a couple of Hebridean Islands, more visits planned to enjoy Scotland.

@@steve-marshSince watching this video I have visited this route and it is truly magnificent. The abbey at Saddle was indeed those ruins in the graveyard. You were so close to that Sculpture, of course we saw it but we were with some friends that knew where it was. Also on the same beach is the little cottage where the video was filmed that that nameless scouser sang 😂🤣.
The Art deco building at Southend is the former Keil Hotel. Built in the 1930's was accomodeard during WWII for a Royal Naval Hospital. Returning to civilian use as a hotel after the war and continued as that into late 1980's when the then owners became bankrupt. Sadly thereafter falling into disrepair. Dunaverty is the name of the rock and my Clan the Macdonald's used to have a castle on it.
Since first setting foot on Scottish Soil in the early sixties it has never ceased to take my breath away….your trip down rout 66 is no exception, i believe the great creator of all things decided to make Scotland 🏴 a wee piece of heaven here on earth….and you always find the best of the best which is always spectacular, I also can’t believe how close you came to Ireland 🇮🇪 surely a good swimmer 🏊♀️ could do that crossing don’t you think! thanks 🙏 again Steve for the extra mile it was fabulous 🤗 as always your nose has detected the smell of bacon 🥓 and as always I have to go rooting around in the fridge! before I go for another re-run of rout 66. 👍🥀🤗

My mother used to say that she was told in her childhood in the 1940s about people rowing across to go the Mull of Kintyre from County Antrim to go to church on Sunday mornings.
16:27 there was a foot passenger only ferry service from Campbeltown to Ballycastle run by Kintyre Express that has sadly ended this year due to wildly high fuel costs.
Yes,Its an art deco style hotel built in the grounds of the old Keil public school which burnt down and was relocated to Helenburgh. Many a good night was had in the Keil hotel 🥳🍻
We travelled that route over thirty years ago, I would agree the 'East' road is narrow twisty with passing places, not easy. No Gormley statue in those days, apparently it's at Saddell Bay near the castle. Many moons ago as a Custody Officer we used to go to the part time Sheriff Court in Campbeltown, a long way from the Central Belt in a four cell secure vehicle ! Years ago there was a ferry service to Ireland from Campbeltown, it didn't seem to last very long, perhaps not financially viable. Gigha island is pronounced Geeha and is well worth a visit to see Achamore Gardens and lovely beaches. The Kintyre Peninsula is beautiful, wether it'll become popular as 'a route', I would say probably doubtful. I wonder if the Dutch barge coffee and restaurant is still in Tarbet ? Thanks Steve for another great film !👏
Another great video, thanks for feeding my Scotland withdrawal symptoms. We stayed in Rothesay in September 2015 and took the Rhubodach - Colintaive ferry to the mainland, hardly turned the engine off before restarting it, such a short crossing. We drove north to pick up the A83 down through Inverary, a place we drove through many times and a welcome toilet stop, down to Campbeltown. After a coffee break very close to the place you ate at in your previous video we took the east coast road back to the A83 and Rothesay. As part of our dozen or so visits to Scotland over the last decade or so we did a lot of miles and saw some magnificent scenery. Checking the route for this post I didn’t realised how far we drove that day, so we almost did the route 66 before it was famous, as I did the North Coast 500 learning to drive in Scotland in 1969 before that was also famous. Thanks again, keep up the great videos.
I had a week there earlier this year. Was too scared to go round the single track roads though. Gigha was a great day trip. Could have sat by the rocks on Westport Beach forever listening to the waves!
Another cracking adventure Steve. I meant to ask when you released the Lighthouse museum vid, but have you been to the Sumburgh Head Foghorn/Lighthouse on Shetland?. They've restored the foghorn and sound it off on occasion.
This is one of my top 5 Steve videos. Such peace, beauty, and Campbeltown is lovely. At 20:33, the view of Ailsa Craig looks like a painting, and just that view would be worth the entire trip to me.
Nice tour, thanks for taking us along. Figure 66 miles, 33 on West Coast side, larger roads, 33 miles East Coast side, narrow roads, not too bad eh? Have to put Rosie's bacon sandwich on the bucket list. Funny, yeah, sometimes hard to find an open place to get food at 0700. Nice car park though, quiet. What was in the pot of boiling water? Of course, the castle 'dog' stole the show.
So good to see this ….i was staying at the Lodge gate house at Saddell. Which is at the entrance to the driveway down to Saddell castle, three cotteges & Manor House ( all Landmark Trust ) also the Anthony Gormly sculpture….AND the best ever beach & rock pools!!! All just over the road from the Abbey ruins & old Well …you just missed it . I hope to visit again, but it’s a long way from the Suffolk coast
Many years ago we stopped campletown few motorcyclist ...but didnt really explore ...cheers steve for inspiration to do it proper i always watch you on tv with google maps on my phone ...👌👌👌👌
We did the Kintyre Peninsula in 2018, and found it to be amazing. Sadly you missed the Springbank Distillery, fantastic tasting room, and tour! Also, there were some caves after Campbeltown, on the way to the Mull lighthouse. Good for you for hiking all the way down to the lighthouse- and I agree, the road is scary. We saw the Linda McCartney memory garden as well. I loved Skipness Castle when we visited, we were the only ones there, and the views were stunning. Tarbert was lovely, but we drove on up to Inveraray, and had a fantastic lunch at the George Hotel, then toured the Castle of the Duke of Argyll, at Inveraray. Your drive, views, and observations were spot on. I would do this drive again, absolutely.
been there done that run. Had a tour of the lighthouse. Saddle Beach where that song was played. Stayed for a week in a caravan site West coast Thanks for taking us back to the Mull of Kintyre. Memorial of the fallen.
That video is quite brilliant, next best thing to being there! I see the Mull of Kintyre very often but from Norn Iron and every time I see it I think exactly as you said ...can't believe that Scotland and a part of Scotland that I have never visited. Maybe some day!
I recommended the kintyre 66 to you a couple of months ago, so glad you done it! We married in Tayinloan, just up from the Gigha ferry 3 years ago. Glad you enjoyed it! The white building in Southend just past Columbus’ footprint was an old hotel (Khiel hotel) It’s been bought and sold a few times, has remained desolate for a number of years. Was popular with teenagers when I was in school. The building just down the hill from it was an all girls school for many years, it went on fire and has been empty ever since.
Just a quick additional - when at the trig point in Machrihanish, standing next to the Gauldrons, you have all the affore mentioned islands but also the top of Ireland in the distance.
Living in Inverness I am blessed to live within so many places and roads to drive and explore, but it’s just so busy here with tourists such as the NC500 and to be honest Kintyre 66 (K66) actually looks like a dream to escape the crowds and explore an area of Scotland I know little about. Though I would take my time and take a good few days to properly explore and relax
@@andrew5200 I did it at least twice before it existed. If it did exist the Kyle Ferry was still running, the last time I did it there was a brand-new bridge there and a lot of the villages were by-passed! It was mostly single track road when I did it, the last time was not so good with most little places by-passed!
Walter, I was privileged to be born at Inverness, and enjoyed my life until the father decided to go to Australia.. They say, you can take the boy out of Scotland, but you can NEVER take Scotland out of the boy.
I occasionally had to travel these roads back in the 80's when I was fixing the TV signal for these communities, and remember Tarbert and Campbeltown in particular. They don't appear to have changed much since then except perhaps more RV's on the roads now.
That was great Steve. Suffering again on our behalf. Early on I was thinking how good the roads were compared to the rest of the country. But you soon found some dodgy ones! That hill up from the lighthouse was pretty tough but the views were great and nice beaches. Classic that the Abbey stones were closed but its certainly a quiet part of the country. Loved skipness Castle, a great building - always like when you can climb up towers.
We love kintyre and have been going there for many years. area is just beautiful. Saddal bay is brilliant especially for the dog. People seem to bypass the area but they're missing some beautiful scenery and beaches
Wow beautiful roadtrip, while you watched the road we all could watch the gorgeous villages and views. It made me dream about how it would be living along the coast up there ...... would not stop looking at the skies and the sea and ...... Still dreaming, thank you for another great video
When the Iceland volcano was about to erupt I was finishing my holiday part one on the Vic32, I had arranged to finish at Tarbert ( start of 66 ). Had an expensive taxi to Campbeltown airport for plane to Glasgow and then Isle of Man for the next part on the Isle of Man. There's lots of interesting things to do a boat trip to a bird reserve and three Light houses in a row, a cat sanctuary, coastal paths with steep walks and lots more thats been keeping me coming back since 94. Malcolm
I really enjoyed this video Steve. When we lived near Locgilphead l was on Kintyre a lot..Painting and photographing. I love both coasts, both completely different. Saddell bay is very easy to miss, no signs. Its 9miles and about 20mins from Campbelltown. You come down a steep hill and see the bay away to youre right. As you come round a tight bend to the right, driving slowly you come to two stone gate posts and a lodgehouse with a parking area. A lovely old tree Avenue takes you to the Landmark Trust Castle. There you find the beach and the sculpture !! Thanks for the lovely trip......Alioban
I journeyed up on the night train to Fort William for a long weekend trip many years ago and hired a car to get me around the area. One of the surprises that struck me was how smooth and unblemished the roads were! It was a joy to drive around. I have Scottish and Irish blood in my DNA and love all things Celtic and Gaelic. Loving this roaming video and it's bringing back so many wonderful memories. Thank you ❤
Followed your route in reverse stopping off in Campbeltown, Tarbert, Inverary and staying at Saddell Bay next to the Castle. Great scenery, lots of interest. Thanks for the recommendation.
I now know why I love your vids so much, you turn down every road that looks interesting! I live on Canada West Coast and whenever we drove anywhwere we went direct with NO STOPS EXCEPT GAS! 500-700K. Now I know what I missed after 93 years. Thanks Steve for opening my eyes!🇨🇦
I've spent many holidays in Otter Ferry and been over to Tarbet for lunch on the ferry several times. We've never gone any further south unfortunately. We tended to drive up and round, via Inveraray, to get home. That castle in Skipness is wonderful!
Again, one of your fascinating videos brings back recollections of my West Coast visits in the 1980's, with my Worth Valley Railway pals. We had a spare Sunday before joining VIC32 for a week's steaming around Loch Fyne, the Kyles, and the Firth of Clyde, and skipper Nick Walker suggested a drive down to visit Gigha. At that time it was still under private ownership, but has since been bought out and is now run by the Isle of Gigha Heritage Trust. One thing I remember about our visit is that all the commercial enterprises, garage, shop, etc. were under the proprietorship of one rejoicing in the name of Mac Sporran! I believe that at one time the island was owned by the Horlick family of bedtime drink fame, and at that time Achamore Gardens on the island were planted with a large variety of exotic and sub tropical plants, which the Trust is working to restore. I too, was surprised to find that the land mass on the horizon to the South West was in fact Rathlin Island and the coast of Northern Ireland, as of course is also the case when you're on the Southern coast of Islay, but when you look back in history, the early Christians like Columba crossed this sea regularly in quite basic craft made out of wood and animal hides. I've not explored southwards to Campbeltown and the Mull on land so your video covered a whole new area for me (did you know there used to be a "light railway" between Campbeltown and Machrihanish?), but on one occasion when rising winds were forecast overnight, the skipper decided to change our sailing plan to anchor in Loch Ranza on Arran, and make a run for the more sheltered haven of Tarbet. From the wheelhouse of VIC32 under grey skies, the Eastern shore of Kintyre viewed from the Sound looked quite craggy and forbidding in places, and the course I was given to steer up into Loch Fyne kept us well offshore. Having spent a number of nights moored alongside the fishing wharf at Tarbet, I can assure you that the little town had its moments, back in the 1980's! Thank you once again, Steve, for posting this fascinating trip.
Wonderful little drive Steve, and not too busy,. Alicja must hate you when you do a nice trip and she is at work. Oh well you will just have to do it again, including of course the walk to the lighthouse 😂😎🏴
The Gigha ferrymen must have thought you rather odd …. A day trip in under an hour 😂 Thank you for a delightful tour of this interesting “route 66”. 👍😀
We stayed in the little house by beach in Southend a couple of years ago. Swore we'd never drive over to the lighthouse again so I'm kind of pleased it wasn't just me being a wimp. Beautiful part of Scotland.
Thanks a lot Steve. Covered a bit of everything. A lovely tour including dash cam scenes etc. Much appreciated. Keep it up. Always looking forward to your next trip 👌👍😇
What a lovely drive. That's the part I love the most, the journey! And even ferry rides and castles, almost a lighthouse. Thank you once again for the work you do to make these videos for our amusement. Say hi to Alicja for me. Hope you're enjoying your Montrose Place. Be well, stay safe, love from Texas.
Thank you for a fantastic video. It brings back memories of our two week stay at a self-catering cottage in Achnashelloch in 2014. We did the same route then, only in clockwise direction. Glad to see that the 'End of public road' sign is replaced in the mean time. At the point we were there, it was all scratched up and witth stickers saying 'YES' or 'NO' for independent Scotland. Keep up the good work Steve!
Great video again Steve & although not mega exciting there was still plenty of great wee things to visit.... Still my favourite drive was around Arran several years ago which is slightly shorter but with much much more to explore! The northern tip of Lochranza was my favourite with stunning walks & views & the best secluded cold water spring & pool to dive into 👍
Good video, as always, Steve. I don't know that part of the world very well, as I can't drive. Beautiful views across the sea. That was an excellent shot of Southend, which I hadn't even heard of. I have visited Skipness & Castle years ago, probably 20 years at least. I don't remember anything like the building which you have made known to me; I think it was being refurbished when I visited. I'd crossed in a small ferry from Lochranza to Claonig (I think it was) & then walked along the shore to get there. I went to Campbeltown on the Waverly once. Well, thanks for opening up new horizons for me, Steve.
Another lovely drive! Thanks for taking us along and doing the driving. That road does look very challenging in parts especially as a Canadian who is a public transit user on her UK adventures. It appears we have the same motto "Always go the the castle". :)
I fell in love Scotland more than 20 years ago and it was this area I visited first for many many years. But the last time I was there is 10 years ago and I like to thank you for showing this area again. Brings back lots of good memories. I think the the crossing to Gigha is on the Sound of Jura and not the Atlantic but I could be mistaken. If you ever ( and I doubt you do) cone back to the Mull if Kintyre park the car and walk a couple of meters back. There a gravel track to some telephone/internet masts. From there you have a commanding view over Northern Ireland and the south of Scotland. By the way you had wonderful weather. Thanks again and if I could give some recommendations I would say Islay,Jura,Colonsay are definitely word a visit and St Kilda.
Thanks so much Jan! And oh yes, those places you mention are all high on the list! If the weather was a bit more predictable I'd have been to St Kilda already this year, but it's such an expensive long trek if the boat gets cancelled, I still dream of going there though!

I got to go round the Mull when visiting Lochgilphead back in the early 90s. Visited Tarbert, Skippness and took the ferry to Aaron and spent the night. We toured OBAN as well. Our friend from Lochgilphead was a Campbell and we are MacIsaac 😮 😂
Thank you for the memories
Sitting with my aged mother watching your video she enjoying it the music goes well with journey my 2nd time watching this x
Please pass on my regards to your mother!
@@steve-marsh thank you 😊
Your channel has the best destressing affect, better than any potion, poison, or analytical person. Love Scotland, can't travel there anymore, it's like being on holiday in my own living room.😍
Thanks so much Carol and all the best to you!
Hello and Greetings from Newcastle upon Tyne. I am addicted to watching your video's . . . that's it, that's my message.
Haha cheers Luke, that’s what I like to hear 😊
Thanks guys! I have an idea to visit some towns named after/twinned with Scottish towns - so much potential :)
@@steve-marsh excellent, pretty much all of Canada then! Lol
Totally agree with you!
We all live on an island why do you think covid was so bad
@@damienlafferty7555 interesting comment though I’m not sure it has much to do with my comment to Steve.
Thanks so much for the comment, I need stuff like this to stop me taking Scotland for granted :)
@@steve-marsh I can’t imagine you taking Scotland for granted for one minute. You’re proud of your beautiful country and you like to share it. I look forward to watching your videos each time I see a notification
What an Interesting tour of The Mull of Kintyre Steve! Wonderful Piece of Work!💪💪💪💪👍👍👍
I love that there's hardly any other cars! I did this drive over 40 yrs ago... hasn't changed much!
Funny how the locals always drive twice as fast. And was funnier whe you said the cats were friendly and it replied: "no, no!"
This Route 66 far outshines the US one! I have to make sure it’s on our list for our next visit to our homeland.
It really was a great wee trip :)
Come on Bernice.Yesterday you ransacked your fridge for ice cream and today bacon. You have a healthy appetite my dear. 😀Steve's tour is outstanding and the scenery absolutely wonderful. If it hadn't happened already, I would be falling in love with bonnie Scotland by now 🥰

The building at 19:14 is the Keil Hotel [Wikipedia] closed; partially collapsed; and at risk
Yes,Its an art deco style hotel built in the grounds of the old Keil public school which burnt down and was relocated to Helenburgh. Many a good night was had in the Keil hotel 🥳🍻
The Gigha ferry safety instruction voice sounded like David Tennant!
Cheers Richard! Especially for correcting ANOTHER mispronunciation :D
Superb Mike, thanks for sharing! Aye, you were doing all these roads long before the marketers got involved :)
nice to see that you weren’t the only one who had the idea to camp. subtle, but it gave the message that your idea was a good one 🤣
I had a week there earlier this year. Was too scared to go round the single track roads though. Gigha was a great day trip. Could have sat by the rocks on Westport Beach forever listening to the waves!
Glad you've had the chance to explore the stunning area :)
Totally agree Steve that part of the country, if you have the weather is absolutely beautiful ☀️🏴!
Aye I chased the weather for this one mate :)
Another cracking adventure Steve. I meant to ask when you released the Lighthouse museum vid, but have you been to the Sumburgh Head Foghorn/Lighthouse on Shetland?. They've restored the foghorn and sound it off on occasion.
Concur. It really made a huge spike on the Envy meter again. Well done Steve.
Oh cheers! Haven't been there since before starting the channel, long overdue another visit! Cheers mate
@@steve-marsh Hopefully you can time a visit with them sounding off the foghorn.
Cheers Frank, ahhh it was hot dogs on the beach :)
Another brilliant video, loved seeing the old roads. :)
Glad you enjoyed it Morgan! Cheers!
Thanks again beautiful comments and scenery drive safe love the music
Many years ago we stopped campletown few motorcyclist ...but didnt really explore ...cheers steve for inspiration to do it proper i always watch you on tv with google maps on my phone ...👌👌👌👌
Thanks so much, hope you get that way again soon and get weather like I did!
WONDERFULL JUST SO COOL HAD NO IDEA ANY OF THAT WAS EVEN THERE THANK YOU
We did the Kintyre Peninsula in 2018, and found it to be amazing.
My grandparents lived in the house you pass at 1:14. I miss it, and them, to this day. Glad you had the weather to enjoy the road!
Amazing! Thanks for sharing Jim!
That video is quite brilliant, next best thing to being there! I see the Mull of Kintyre very often but from Norn Iron and every time I see it I think exactly as you said ...can't believe that Scotland and a part of Scotland that I have never visited. Maybe some day!
Cheers Ray! Will be over to see it from the other side very soon :)
Best tip ever Kelly :) Thanks!!!
Once again a fun tour and lots of nice scenery.
Glad you enjoyed it :)
That was a lovely armchair tour, thanks, Steve. I have my Philip's road atlas beside me to keep me on track.
Darn, Steve, I wish I had accompanied you. Yet, you did take me with you, didn't you? Another brilliant video. Cheers for taking me along
Cracking Video Steve the scenery in our country is truly breathtaking.
Cheers Derek!
Just a quick additional - when at the trig point in Machrihanish, standing next to the Gauldrons, you have all the affore mentioned islands but also the top of Ireland in the distance.
Ahhh cheers!
Aye, it's a bit crazy up there in summer eh!?
Am glad I did the NC500 out of season and before it became too well known.
@@andrew5200 I did it at least twice before it existed. If it did exist the Kyle Ferry was still running, the last time I did it there was a brand-new bridge there and a lot of the villages were by-passed! It was mostly single track road when I did it, the last time was not so good with most little places by-passed!
Lets hope this place doesnt go the same way , was a time when i loved Skye and the NW . Its been ruined .
Aye spot on Colin! :)
Was there not an old song that went something like - Campbelltown Loch I wish you were Whiskey ?
No, not in Scotland there wasn’t……….”Whiskey” is American or Irish. You are thinking of whisky. 😝🤪🏴🏴👍
Campbeltown Loch och aye! I would drink you dry. SNP banned that song as part of their war on alcohol 🤣 Probably
Yes popular song "Campbeltown Loch"
That was great Steve. Suffering again on our behalf. Early on I was thinking how good the roads were compared to the rest of the country. But you soon found some dodgy ones! That hill up from the lighthouse was pretty tough but the views were great and nice beaches. Classic that the Abbey stones were closed but its certainly a quiet part of the country. Loved skipness Castle, a great building - always like when you can climb up towers.
Cheers Allan!
Awesome trip. Great little towns and the vistas are beautiful. Looks like a great place to live. Would love to live in Scotland. Thanks. Walter
Cheers Walter!
Thank you ❤
Lovely part of the country only problem when we visited was the swarms of midges when we camped at Carradale . Great video as usual
Cheers Alister! Oh they can destroy a trip eh!?

Followed your route in reverse stopping off in Campbeltown, Tarbert, Inverary and staying at Saddell Bay next to the Castle. Great scenery, lots of interest. Thanks for the recommendation.
I now know why I love your vids so much, you turn down every road that looks interesting! I live on Canada West Coast and whenever we drove anywhwere we went direct with NO STOPS EXCEPT GAS! 500-700K. Now I know what I missed after 93 years. Thanks Steve for opening my eyes!🇨🇦
Absolutely brilliant Steve. One of the best from New Zealand.
Thanks so much Chris!
I've spent many holidays in Otter Ferry and been over to Tarbet for lunch on the ferry several times. We've never gone any further south unfortunately. We tended to drive up and round, via Inveraray, to get home.
That castle in Skipness is wonderful!
As always, another great video. And thank you for doing all the heroic uphill walking to get good views for us to enjoy!
Cheers Barney! Tougher than I expected that walk! :D
That was a real treat. Beautiful scenery, and so informative. Much appreciated!
Really welcome! Thanks :)
Superb! A great read once again Hugh!
Wonderful little drive Steve, and not too busy,.
Alicja must hate you when you do a nice trip and she is at work.
Oh well you will just have to do it again, including of course the walk to the lighthouse 😂😎🏴
Haha well, bits of it, she gets very bored with my public transport stuff :)
The Gigha ferrymen must have thought you rather odd …. A day trip in under an hour 😂
Thank you for a delightful tour of this interesting “route 66”. 👍😀
You’ve chosen an excellent sound track for this video! I’m new to your channel but thoroughly enjoy it thus far!
I like the music clips you play on your videos. Really pleasant to listen too.
We stayed in the little house by beach in Southend a couple of years ago. Swore we'd never drive over to the lighthouse again so I'm kind of pleased it wasn't just me being a wimp. Beautiful part of Scotland.
Nice! Haha yes, it's a beast of a road even though it didn't look so scary on my video!

Great video again Steve & although not mega exciting there was still plenty of great wee things to visit.... Still my favourite drive was around Arran several years ago which is slightly shorter but with much much more to explore! The northern tip of Lochranza was my favourite with stunning walks & views & the best secluded cold water spring & pool to dive into 👍
I really need to do this mate!
Oh I saw that ferry and would love to sample it one day! In a future video hopefully :)
Another fantastic road trip. Skipness castle was icing on the cake. Thanks!
Thanks Lynne! I was happy to finally find something on the east coast after getting lost :D
Another lovely drive! Thanks for taking us along and doing the driving. That road does look very challenging in parts especially as a Canadian who is a public transit user on her UK adventures. It appears we have the same motto "Always go the the castle". :)
I guess you could get public transport for most of this route, oh that would be a good challenge :)
Too bad you didn’t have time to eat at the Skipness Fish Shack, lovely spot for a bite. Great video, Steve. Thanks for taking us around the loop.
I can imagine - looked lovely around there!
Aw Steve, your vid to Campbeltown was fab. My late husband and his uncle lived there for years. It was so good to "do the drive" again and has left me in a state but it was still great to see it again. Keep up the good work Steve. You nail it every time
Thank you so much Linda!
Another great vid, thanks Steve. Tarbert brought back happy memories of the couple of times I went there including when I did the Cal Mac Island Hop 16 (an interesting journey, check it out if you've not seen it) as foot passenger and enjoyed a pleasurable few days on Islay. Keep up the good work sir.
I'd love to do that! Cheers Matt!
