Hi, I’m Steve, a travel reviewer from Scotland. Join me on my adventures as I discover my own country, often visiting places for the first time, so hopefully it's as much of an eye-opener for you as it is for me! Don't expect expert opinion, just a very honest journey of discovery. Sometimes featuring my intrepid sidekick Alicja, sometimes featuring adventures beyond the borders of Scotland. Enjoy!

Adhesion railway means that the locomotive is moving only by means of friction between the wheels and the tracks, no cogwheels or cables attached, which is often a feature with railways in mountainous areas.
Now that all makes sense! Thank you!
Thanks 👍 saved me from looking it up
Leadhills and Wanlockhead best kept secrets in Scotland, my Son and Daughter-in-law paid for me and my dear late Wife to stay at the Hopetoun Arms, have a ride on the wee Railway and pan for gold at Wanlockhead to celebrate our 50th Wedding Anniversary. Thank you for sharing brings back so many happy Memories.
Wanlockhead has an absolutely fantastic pub with great food and magic people.
Wonderful ❤ No scary scammers at that railway station!
What a treat to get an extra video this week, thanks guys.
Haha imagine the same scammer hanging about this wee station :D
Thank you for not only the delightful train ride to Scotlands highest village, but also for the hidden gem of the Polish relief map of Poland. My grandparents and parents arrived in Britain after the war thanks to both the Polish and British army. 🙂
A mid week video? Such a treat! 😊
Cheers mate, a wee bonus to confuse everyone :D
Yeah I saw the notification and thought "Hang on, it's not Saturday is it?" 😊😊
What a cute narrow gauge railway! The relief map is so cool. I usually don’t get to comment so early, but I’m up especially late. Thanks for the adventure!
Haha cheers Erin! Late for you, early for me! :)
What a wonderful surprise to wake up to on a cloudy, chilly day in Canada ... a Tuesday treat from Steve and Alicja! Thank you for brightening a gloomy morning.
Thanks so much for coming along :)
Great wee vlog Steve and lovely for Alicja to see a Polish reminder of her heritage 🙂
Thanks David from us both!
Adhesion railways are those that rely on just a friction of the wheels on the rails just like you get on any mainline railway in the UK at least as opposed to things like a cog or a rack railway which you get in mountainous regions.
Thanks for the info William!
Thanks William for saving me from having to write that.
I had no doubt someone had beaten me to it, hence my perusal through the comments.
I had no idea there were so many different types of railways. Thank you.
Video presentation, format, length, topic, and ending credit's are spot on Steve. You took us right there with you. Thank you and Alicja. Train conductor, what a gentleman, eh?
The volunteers were awesome mate!
Facinating,, beautiful nature. Thank you for taking me again to a place I would never come otherwise.
Thanks so much! Had to slip a wee Scottish bonus video in before another overseas one this weekend!
Did this back in September while on a cold and wet weekend down in Wanlockhead and we were the only folk on the train so I'm pleased to see it looking busy here! The volunteers all do such a fantastic job, and the guy who shuts you in the carriage on the way out is an absolute gem - held up our departure for ages as he was nattering away telling us stories 😂
He seems to be a bit of a legend!
Wishing you all the best!
Loved it .. and the Polish gift is wonderful and a bit weird in the nicest way. Dziękuję bardzo :)
Gem of a video
Cheers!
That was really really good Steve and Alicja thank you !
You are so welcome :)
I missed this video Steve and Alicia loved the wee train and the map is amazing.
Love the blue theme suits both of you particularly Alicja!
What a lovely little symphony in teal you two make, the colours complementing you both so well, especially the reflections off the sunglasses. A really delightful small gauge railway, which I never knew existed too, and that fantastic 3D map of Scotland, to honour the people who helped the Polish. Another gem.
Cheers Mike! :)
Julia and I went to the Polish Map of Scotland about 2 weeks ago. We're thinking of holding our wedding there. You guys will get an invite! 😁 Awesome video, as always.
Thanks so much! :)
Had no idea the Railway or the Polish map of Scotland existed. First class video.
Great we video Steve. Liked the train, its great that this is still going and run by volunteers. A bit different!!!! No mobile coverage.
Wanlockhead actually has it's own rock festival in the summer!
3 days of music, folks camped in the old bowling green with campervans behind that.
It is all original bands as well. They put up a large tent at the side of the pub and the bands play (mostly) in there. It can be fun when it lashes down with rain. Being sideways on from the hill at the back of it, the water coming of the hill can sometimes run through the tent like a small river whilst you are in watching the bands. One year some of the kids who were with their parents (it is a family friendly event) started building a dam with small stones inside the tent😂.
It is bloody hilly and blowy all the time from my experiences.
Well! That was a wee bit magical, a beautiful wee train and Alicjia 'walking round Scotland' in about 10 minutes 😂
Cheers Johnny :)
Another cracking Scottish video by the both of you. Sláinte
Cheers Ross!
Amazing Steve great to see you both again n on home turf again ❤it sir
Cheers Paul! Had to drop something Scottish in, about time!
Nice one Steve good on them.keeping this railway alive
Here here!
That Looks like you two had a great time..... Great video :-)))
Never knew about any of those places cheers guys one to check out 👍
Cheers Davy!
Flash in the Peak District is the highest village in the UK, 1519 feet. Another good video. Thank you
One to visit for sure!
Yes, it's hard to believe that a village in Staffordshire, a county not known for its mountains, is the highest in the UK. Flash is just off the Leek to Buxton road. An excellent drive or cycle.
01:57: If the train driver can resist that face, I'm a ring-tailed Lemur. What a fantastic tip for our next visit with the lovely folks of The Borders.
You’re just down the road from me Steve, it’s a lovely area as long as you have a warm jacket! Even in the summer.😂😂
Great Vid Steve , looks very picturesque but cold ! what a contrast to recent train journeys !
Aye a wee bit different eh!
As others have said, an adhesion railway is where the engine and carriage wheels run on the tracks as a normal railway does. Snowdon Mountain Railways is a rack & pinion.
Nice to have a bonus video in the week.
What a delightful rail journey and the map of Scotland an added bonus, thank you both and stay safe, cheers.
Cheers Simon!
Certainly a a very entreating video, Thank you
Going through the Ledhills towards the old mine museum is amazing as well, the hills just appear to grow straight out of the ground at the roadside.
Really want to get back here!
What a fantastic wee train. Great work from the volunteers!
I look forward to your videos every week.
This was a lovely surprise during a busy work morning! Thanks again to both of you! :)
Our pleasure Graeme!
Didn't expect another video so soon, a lovely surprise 😉 That wee train is very cute hahaha.
A wee midweek bonus to confuse everyone mate :)
@@steve-marsh I don't mind a wee bonus video hahaha, working from home and always have RUclips open on my private laptop which is sitting right next to my work equipment. 😬
Great stuff, uncovering more hidden gems!
Cheers mate! Love finding these wee places :)
That was brilliant! Thank you, you two!
Our pleasure Ian! Just a wee bonus to keep a bit of Scotland on the channel :)
New to the channel mate left Scotland 25 years ago your videos definitely get me homesick will keep following your travels mate
Cheers mate! Lots more to come from the homeland through the year I hope :) Cheers for finding the channel!
Delightful little railway hope they can get it to Wanlockhead soon.
Great to see you both! Enjoy!
A cannot beat a small scale railway, little track, lovely journey,
So true Christine!
Thanks for sharing. A surprise additional video.
Cheers Jim!
Hi Steve from Spain. So nice to see the bonnie wee lass as well.
Cheers! :)
Such a cool wee train, you wouldn't want to be going far on those wooden seats though😂Awesome map of Scotland👍You would think by now Alicja would know there are no flat parts in Scotland😉Cool video Steve👍
Cheers Rab :)
So. Much. Fun. 😁
Thank you for sharing this adventure! The volunteers do a great job of maintaining this lovely railway.
They are true stars!
Thanks Steve for going to the top of Scotland and looks windy and it is nice to Alicia with you today and here in Basingstoke hants it is windy as well thanks
Haha thanks Elaine! :)
Great to meet you when you were filming…and I even saw my campervan drive past on the footage!
Haha no way! Small world :)
My neck of the woods growing up. Live in Kirkconnel not that far away. Leadhills & Wanlockhead beautiful wee places, use to picnic and bath in the fresh water pools up there.
i enjoyed every minute of your journey. Thank you.
well done you two , great vid .
Cheers Roy!
A nice surprise on a Tuesday morning! Looked like a fun day.
Thanks Susan! It really was :)
Great Vidro thanknyou
Great work Steve you make a great couple.
Cheers John!
Looks like a fun journey, love to travel on it, cheers for the video Steve.
Thanks for coming along Martin!
The list of "what not to miss when going to Scottland" is growing and growing. And that from an extra, intermediate video! Thanks again!
Oh my list is endless too (thankfully!) :)
« When shall we meet again? In thunder, lightning, or rain?” ;). You guys are so lucky to live in such a beautiful country.
Thanks Chris :)
Hello Steve. Another well produced and thoroughly entertaining video.
Thanks so much David!
Well, inspired by this video my wife and I visited the railway on Sunday morning. Nice return trip, then lunch at the Wanlockhead Inn. Then on the way home we stopped for a look at the Polish Map. Quite a feat, and what a deep ravine you have to cross over to get to it from the hotel!
Superb mate! Hope you had a great time :)
Enjoyed the trai ride..made my day..thanks
That's one of my favourite little trains. I had a great trip as the only passenger last year.
Great little surprise video Steve, it looked very remote and very chilly, but it is Scotland, I hope Noddy and Big Ears didn’t mind you borrowing their cute train, yet again only you could find the highest village in Scotland, what next I wonder! Interesting story relating to the Polish map of Scotland, we learn something new every time we are out and about with the two of you thank you 🙏 again 🤗
Thanks Bernice :) Haha love the comment!
Really enjoyed your video of Wanlockhead. Been up there several times and it's always freezing!
Haha too true!
Love the little train - wonderfully makeshift. Bless the volunteers who keep it going. And thanks for showing us the Polish 3-D map of Scotland. I notice the map includes the Western Isles, but did it include the northern isles? Another great trip. Thank you both!
We should've looked behind the trees to see if Orkney and Shetland were there :)
I think the map was done in the days when Orkney and Shetland lived in a separate box beside maps. Can't see any box though.
@@kenbakie4590 😃
Love it 😊
Another great video. Many thanks from this Yank for bringing back wonderful memories of my times in Scotland!
You're so welcome Jeff!
Very beautiful!
As soon as you put the caption on screen about Tom Scott doing a video on the railway, I knew exactly which railway it was and for what reason it existed.
Fantastic video Steve😊
Cheers Shug!
Wait, was that Steve pulling out money from his own pocket for the donation?! Very interesting adventure. The conductor was quite cooperative, I’d even say he was happy to be on film. 😄 Don’t worry, Steve, I’m sure he watched this video. I’ve seen pictures of the Great Polish Map but it was nice to see it “in person”, so to speak. I was thinking the same thing, let’s walk on it. Ah well, still good to see it close up.
I will always record me opening my wallet :D
What a great treat having an extra video from my favourite RUclipsrs ❤️ take care guys and keep em coming please.😊
Cheers Richard! A wee midweeker to keep everyone on their toes :D
Thanks for another great RUclips video. I have driven though Wanlockhead a good few years ago on a very short holiday in Dumfries & Galloway. This is an area I really must give proper time to have a proper explore. It’s such an overlooked area of Scotland.
We saw some lovely places in the area and so wish we'd had more time!
It's a great wee railway! I've visited a few times over the years. They are planning to extend it to closer to Wanlockhead.
Oh great to hear!
Missed the best part of Wanlockhesd, the lead mine tour it is really good, and very interesting.
Saw it, but we were filming another video on this trip so time was very limited, this was just a bonus
Loved that wee querky video.....
Aw thanks Donna!
Another fascinating video, Steve! Many thanks indeed :)
Cheers Kieron!
Really enjoyed you both on a journey
Another cracking job Steve! As you mentioned I too first saw this in Tom Scott's video about the time when this line served the unusual purpose of being a bus replacement railway
Cracking wee video that, although I think he got the whole train to himself!
What a beautiful area. It made me think of Brigadoon.
Another great video Steve. Just to say well done and thanks for the adventures - they’re all really entertaining and interesting. It’s also great to see you supporting and commenting on other travel You Tuber’s videos - nice touch. Cheers.
Thanks so much Stephen! Appreciated :)
Very entertaining, loved it!
Thanks Jack!
What a lovely train! And what a great way to see the sights. Sometimes trains go so fast all you see is a blur this when you actually get to see something. Thank you too for all the work that you do to bring these videos to us. Be well, stay safe, love from Texas.
Thanks so much Kate!
Love the engine named "Clyde".
Do they have a second one named "Bonny"?
@@abrahamdozer6273 no but we have others named after the local rivers. Clyde, nith, mennock, and luce
Very interesting! Wanlockhead, which is south of Glasgow, is higher than the highlands which I thought would be the....highest. Keep the excellent content coming!
Cheers Bill!
Great video, Steve. Didn't know about the railway nor the Polish map. Well worth a future visit.
A couple of wee gems there! :)
Great video as always guys. Remote place to live especially in the winter. I guess you would have to by a hardy soul to put up with Hoolies. Thanks again, take care.
Haha yes! Cheers James!
Great video Steve - such beautiful scenery ! I've added a visit to my 'to do' list. 🙂
Well worth a look when you get the chance!
Thanks for the video. Brought back childhood memories going to Leadhills for picnics with my relatives from Sanquhar where the oldest post office in uk is located
Superb! Glad to bring back a childhood memory :)
What an absolute joy to watch!
Thanks Marilyn!
ANOTHER couple of awesome places to add to my wishlist. Cheers Steve - we might pencil these in on our way home from the Isle of Arran in mid-summer 👍
Another one ticked off mate :) How long you on Arran for?
@@steve-marsh just a couple of nights on the way back from a stay at Ellenbeich (Easdale) in Argyll. Our whale watching trip is already booked 😊
That wee train was great. Wee bit shooogly but still. Well worth the effort.
The relief map of our great nation was excellent. The story behind it is so nice. The UK was a very different kind of country back then, glad us Scots are still like that. 🏴🇵🇱
Cheers Michael! :)
Superb video again.
Cheers again!
That was a great video the honest little adventure on the toy train and the the relief map was amazing. I would rather see that than a sculpture by some famous artist.
Totally agree William! Great story behind it
what a wonderful, atmospheric and "random" video! an unexpected treat for a Tuesday full of Zoom calls! charming train and village (from a distance). enjoyed the map of Scotland and the sentiment behind it. Plus a definition: an adhesion railway relies on adhesion traction to move the train. Adhesion traction is the friction between the drive wheels and the steel rail. More random videos, please! Cheers!
Thanks so much Seto! Always glad to have a wee bonus video to share!
Another great video Steve, thank you! There's nothing quite like a narrow gauge railway, to put a smile on your face. And the relief map & its history was fascinating. If you ever happen to find yourself on the California North Coast (land of the tallest Redwood trees...325 ft plus), we have a narrow gauge that was part of old timber lines, called Confusion Hill (a bit of a tourist place), and a full gauge line that runs from Ft. Bragg on the Mendocino coast, through the Redwoods, into the interior. That's named the Skunk Railroad. Good travels 😎.
That sounds right up my street! And love California, especially the north in amongst the redwoods. I have happy memories of a day hiking Mt Tam!
Hello Steve
…. Another place I’ve visited…. again, back in the day…😊
But I’m visiting Scotland at least once a year from now on making some new memories.
Great video guys, regards to you both 😉😘
Well done visiting such an out-of-the-way wee place! :)
