You are very fortunate to have a partner who supports you in making these videos. I can imagine the reaction I would get from my wife if I suggested getting up before dark on a cold winter's morning to catch a train to make a video for RUclips. I remember years ago during a Scottish holiday, we stopped for something to eat somewhere near Inverness. I had a bowl of soup called Cullin Skink made from smoked Haddock; it was wonderful. Take care of that lovely lady she is something special.
This is now my neck of the woods. A retired Brummie who now lives between Forres and Elgin, the 35 bus has been a regular day out for me for the last few years visiting all those wonderful little villages from Portgorden onward. Cullen is especially beautiful and yes, you need to return to take in the view from Castle Hill and visit the Kirk, so much history. The organs of the wife of Robert the Bruce were buried there after her death and Robert was so grateful he made an annual payment to the village in gratitude for the treatment of his wife's body and it's return south for burial. Apparently, this sum is still paid although the government challenged it in 2000 and the subsequent enquiry was settled in the village's favour! By the way, the bus driver on your return journey was Charlie, he's a bit of a local character, always ready for a chat and very supportive of his passages, he's also a staunch Liverpool fan but I don't hold that against him!

A lovely video, Steve. I used to drive for Stagecoach on the 35 and absolutely loved it. I couldn't believe they paid me for driving such a pretty route 😁
That would be a dream job, driving buses on that route, seeing all of that gorgeous landscape and scenery everyday and getting paid to do it. On another note, the minus 1 celsius is just about normal for a high temperature here in the state of Massachusetts. It gets down to well below freezing at night. Great video as usual Steve.
@@scottie2636 it certainly is a great job but as an ex driver, driving a 14 ton double decker with passengers in the winter is a huge responsibility especially at £11 per hour which is one of the reasons I quit
Brilliant video as always. As a resident of Buckie this one made me feel very proud of my local area. You should consider doing the “Six Harbour Walk”. A stunning coastal walk - Portsoy, Sandend, Cullen, Portknockie, Findochty, Buckie. Highly recommended.
My step granda was a fisherman and used to stink out the house every weekend by making his own Cullen Skink soup. Could never stomach the stuff after enduring the stench of it being made. Top man he was. Rest easy
American here. I enjoy your videos, particularly since I have never been to Scotland. Some of my ancestors came from there, though. They were called McDuffie or some version of that, and I understand that they originally came from the island of Colonsay. A well-known American writer did return to these roots to write, The Crofter and the Laird, byJohn McPhee ...
Cullen, lovely place 70s & 80s used to go on holiday there in summer and play in the local golf competitions loved it and the golf club did great Cullen Skink. revisited in 2017 not changed a bit .
While I was born in Montrose and lived in Brechin, my Grandparents lived in Buckie so we would always visit them in the holidays. Love Cullen Skink as well as visiting all the little fishing villages. Findochty is actually pronounced "Finechty" by the locals! Bowfiddle rock is amazing to see in Portknockie. We would travel to Buckie from Montrose over the Cairn o' Mount road (you'll need to do that in the van some time!) I'm in Australia now and these videos are great reminders! Keep on posting these great videos, Steve and Alicja!

🤣, when we first moved to Australia I drove 2 hours each way for an Indian meal at a decent restaurant ( my only local options were ‘curry in a hurry’ and the ‘handy Ghandi’ - subsequently sued by the Ghandi family over the name use…….where the curry options were ‘ meat curry, vegetable curry, fish curry 😵💫😞🤨) for my wife’s birthday. In northern NSW, it’s Woolgoolga, for a decent curry - lots of Sikhs living there 😊👍. Some lovely frosty scenery in this one, well done you pair 😎🎥👍‼️
Another brilliant and informative enjoyable film thank you Steve... I really enjoyed wandering along the coast from Findhorn right down to arbroath in the summer...very nice
Hi Steve and Alicja. Thoroughly enjoying the channel. Apologies if someone's already mentioned this, but I wasn't sitting through 800+ comments to find out. If you both go back in tourist season, there's a life-size (approx) figure of a man in a suit and hat, who sits in a chair outside Cullen Collectibles (the wee blue shop across from where you had your skink). I arrived in Cullen from the south side and the view of the wee stacks on the beach took my breath away. Very unexpected. Keep up the good work guys.
Steve you have a sidekick! I have a traveling sidekick too....she and I have been together for almost 26 years and it makes our trips 9and life) so much more fun!
What a wonderful trip. I didn't realize that I'd been smiling the whole time until we got to the end and I quit smiling. My face felt funny then. I am a huge fan of soups. I love soup in the summer in the spring and the winter in the fall. It doesn't matter to me. My favorite type of journey. Feed on the ground most of the time! I want to convey my gratitude to the two of you Steve and Alicja for doing these videos for us. Some of them, like this one, I feel we're made especially for me though I know it wasn't. I want to wish you the merriest of Christmases. Be well, stay safe, travel far, love from Texas.

I have memories of making this in home economics (back when schools taught basic household skills) in Aberdeen in the eighties... I remember the haddock all falling apart.
Another smashing wee trip Steve, don’t remember much about that part of Scotland 🏴 I do remember visiting a ‘BAXTER’ factory & shop that was rather splendid, I briefly noticed as the bus passed! the nearly empty train & bus is a sign of the times, or was it that people knew better than to go out on such a freezing 🥶 cold morning! I’m Surprised living in Scotland Alicja didn’t wear a quilted onesie on the top of her clothes! at least the hearty Soup 🍜 looked worth the trip I was practically dribbling at the sight of it! the views from the beach were astonishing, Scotland is full of endless surprises round every corner, a fabulous place to live! Thanks for yet another shared trip! I have a nerve issue in my legs and I'd never be able to do as much walking as you do, so i appreciate coming along on your journeys. I do have to say that 0°C doesn't seem all that cold to me, but I've lived a good part of my life in the northern tier of the US (in Omaha, if it got UP to freezing in the winter we'd be out in shorts and t-shirts to shovel our driveways!).
So good to see this as it’s one of the places I’m hoping to get to when I got to Inverness in May. It’s so helpful to see you travelling there by public transport as that’s the way I’ll be going.
Another fantastic film. Love the 2 of you. We also had Cullen skink in Cullen, best ever soup. Haven't tried making it yet but do make my own bread. Love train journeys so might just do this one.

Great, now I'm hungry despite having had a big lunch. 🙄😉 What a perfect day to be in that place, hardly any visitors will see it in that light as not many will come to visit around that season. Absolutely stunning! 🤩
@@steve-marsh It's pricey for a tin (well, it is in South Wales where there probably isn't the demand for it). I found it maybe a tad salty.....still good though. I've been inspired to try making my own now instead. Just need some chunky bread to accompany it. Yum!!
I wouldn't lose any sleep over missing out on the Baxter's tinned version, it's decent enough as tinned soup goes but for the high price the few times I tried it I found it lacking a bit in the 'solids' content. Haven't seen it on offer for years now, wouldn't dream of buying it otherwise.
Thank you both for a really fabulous trip once again. Every video I have watched that you have made has been well made, entertaining and very informative, yes indeed.
I recently discovered I have Cullen boatbuilders in my ancestry. Maybe that's why I'm so drawn to the soup - although the cake drew my attention too. That was a treat of a video, many thanks and Happy Christmas to you both.
Thanks so much! You wouldn't believe how long it takes me to find a suitable track in amongst all the normal RUclips soundtracks, so especially appreciate your comment! :)
Absolutely beautiful video again!!! Steve, you are my hero for showing me all of these little towns and villages in my homeland. I miss Scotland soooo much.
Concur! The only fly in the ointment for me was the pet cemetery @ 18:10 as it made me miss so many of my guys. I even made my wife promise that she would place the ashes of my Lil Bit [one of our cats] in my casket so neither of us would be lonesome.
Enjoyed my bus trip Steve and alicja, you can’t beat a Scottish coastline, Elgin famous for a Beatles concert, loved the weather forecast, stone was almost white, nice clear day helps
Another great video Steve. I have holidayed in that area many times and I have eaten Cullen Skink in that Café and recommend it as a must, it is beautiful and definitely the best I have eaten.
what a great rosta, drive Elgin to Aberdeen break 45 mins by law, then return Aberdeen to Elgin and finish. or vice versa. Cullen looks a typical fishing village, still with many old fisherman's cottages in tow, lovely display of heritage. a 4 hour bus ride wow that is a massive route though. can only manage 2 hrs locally, but great to see stagecoach have reached out to that distance, they have to be the UK's biggest travel operator now. ahhh the memories of soup roll and butter as a kid from the end of pier café, its all gone now a ruddy eyesore zipline ride replaced it eventually after many years of closure and decay, surprised they kept the dilapidated old end of pier theatre running its just as old.
What an awesome video Steve. We've never been along that coastline but added it to my wishlist after your wonderful NE250 video. It looks a stunning part of the world and Cullen? Simply wow! What a gorgeous looking village. Thanks for the heads up 👍
On our first trip to Scotland a few years ago, Cullen Skink was on the menu at the first restaurant we visited. I had no idea what it was, but the word 'Skink" didn't sound appetizing (like a combination of skunk/stink!) But I kept seeing it on menus so just had to order this local dish - it was amazing! We didn't visit Cullen for it (I think we were in the Oban/Connel area) - will have to add that stop to our next trip to Scotland. Great video, as always. Happy Holidays to you both!
Skink brings other images to my mind. Apart from the gecko-like lizard, the main image is that of my son's Warhammer Lizardmen army with regiments of Skinks!
Thank you so much Steve and Alicja for a marvellous video of Cullen! What a sweet lovely village to get lost in and to find this lovely restaurant serving this delicious soup.... lovely scenic drive as well.. the bus drivers always seem so friendly ❤❤❤i always love when Alicija accompanies you on your trips
I am from Staffordshire and I absolutely love Cullen Skink, i first tried it from a tin, Baxters but have since had it made fresh and it is delicious, just the right thing for a long walk on a very cold day, warms the very cockles of your soul, great vid... had my mouth watering watching you scoff that yumminess
A beautiful place @SteveMarsh Love the journey up to it, both by train and bus. Loved the little houses. Nice to see Alicja on the road with you. Heard the cold in central Scotland was life-threatening!!!
What a truly delightful trip! And as a soup lover myself, you had me pinning Cullen on the map for places to visit. 🥣 Thank you for this grand trip out-and-about.
Great video, scenery was amazing and the soup looked really good. Thanks to both of for your time to show us around. Have a lovely Christmas and a happy New Year! Ross 🏴
What a fantastic video. Such a beautiful part of the country. Spent many happy holidays camping in Portknockie and played golf on Cullins course which is partly on the beach and partly on the cliffs. As you said the villages haven't changed since we were there in the 60s and 70s. Only one thing you can keep the soup lol
Nice part of the world! If only a lottery win came my way... Is it me or does the perfectly square stone used to build old Scottish houses make them look so new and contemporary?
Brilliant video as always Steve. You and Alicija are great hosts and the beautiful scenery of Scotland never tires. The soup looked fantastic. Great addition at the end of the video having your notes 👍🙂 Merry Christmas to you both and hope for more great content in the new year 🙂

@@steve-marsh It's pricey for a tin (well, it is in South Wales where there probably isn't the demand for it). I found it maybe a tad salty.....still good though. I've been inspired to try making my own now instead. Just need some chunky bread to accompany it. Yum!!
@@steve-marsh Aldi's award-winning Cullen Skink is made by Downies Of Whitehills, fwiw.
Good time of year to try as many as possible to compare! : )
Stevie “wee bit” marsh with some wee soup! Great wee video mate
No way! How cool is that!? And happy Christmas to you too!
Great vlog
Thank you for showing us around
Our pleasure 😊
Lovely trip and I also like the background music on your videos.
Thanks so much! You wouldn't believe how long it takes me to find a suitable track in amongst all the normal RUclips soundtracks, so especially appreciate your comment! :)
Cheers again Marshy, what stunning scenery for sure, Cullen looks like a beautiful little town & loved the viaduct, great to see A girl back.
I agree mate, it's always better with Alicja by my side :)
Scotland. Gorgeous scenery, gorgeous food, gorgeous people.
Wow! A beautiful day for a beautiful trip. And the Cullen skink looked toothsome! Another great video, Steve (and Alicja).
Cheers Barney! It was a fun day, but boy does that sun drop quick!
Really cool video Steve! I enjoyed watching this adventure! 😃
Great video bringing back so many memories having spent many holidays in Cullen in my youth
Absolutely beautiful video again!!! Steve, you are my hero for showing me all of these little towns and villages in my homeland. I miss Scotland soooo much.
So glad you enjoyed it David!
Oh I didn't know that! So much interesting stuff happened up in that corner of the world :)
@@steve-marshyes Steve Beatles January 63 Elgin Dingwall bridge of Allan and the beach ballroom you visited in aberdeen, so I enjoyed that one.
Cheers mate, can be a rough old road that one, but great to get to the coast. Might have to try the full Stagecoach journey sometime!
What an awesome video Steve. We've never been along that coastline but added it to my wishlist after your wonderful NE250 video. It looks a stunning part of the world and Cullen? Simply wow! What a gorgeous looking village. Thanks for the heads up 👍
Tell you what mate, so much more to see up there, can't wait to get back! Have a great weekend!
Haha I have always thought that about the name too! :)
Me too Carol :) Thanks so much for coming along and all the best to you!
9:33 I like the nice blue sky in the backround
A beautiful place @SteveMarsh
Love the journey up to it, both by train and bus. Loved the little houses. Nice to see Alicja on the road with you. Heard the cold in central Scotland was life-threatening!!!
We're sure not used to those temperatures, but must admit I loved it! Chance to get the big jacket on :)
Thank you so much for sharing these wonderful trips and places with those of us that live far away.
Yet another interesting day out presented by you Steve, so keep them coming, and a Very Happy Christmas to you and yours.
Another wonderful video, Thank you!
I could go a bowl of Cullen Skink right now, it's a cold summer here in Australia. I just love your wee trips around my homeland.
Cheers mate! Aye, a bowl of soup like that would be welcome in any season :)
What a truly delightful trip! And as a soup lover myself, you had me pinning Cullen on the map for places to visit. 🥣 Thank you for this grand trip out-and-about.
You're so welcome! And I like the idea of having a map with pins, I might be stealing this...(whether it was a virtual map or a real one!)
@@steve-marsh , it ensures you keep track of where you’ve been and what you’ve still yet to see. 😉
Amazing.I love a good bowl of Skink❤❤
Was well worth the journey Alan :)
Great video, scenery was amazing and the soup looked really good. Thanks to both of for your time to show us around. Have a lovely Christmas and a happy New Year! Ross 🏴
And to you Ross! Thanks so much for coming along :)
how beautiful all that little villages are! Cullen is a gem, I can't wait to taste that soup one day! thank you Steve and Alicja!!
Oh it'll be worth the wait Laura :)
Haha not a fan? :) Aye it's a wonderful corner of Scotland, need to get back there, loads of video possibilities for sure
Nice part of the world! If only a lottery win came my way... Is it me or does the perfectly square stone used to build old Scottish houses make them look so new and contemporary?
Hey good point! There's you noticing things I miss again :)
Cullen has a fabulous ice cream parlour
Brilliant video as always Steve. You and Alicija are great hosts and the beautiful scenery of Scotland never tires. The soup looked fantastic. Great addition at the end of the video having your notes 👍🙂 Merry Christmas to you both and hope for more great content in the new year 🙂
Hey thanks so much for picking up on the notes - glad I've added that now :) Have a great Christmas! :)
@@steve-marsh You 2 as well Steve, thanks for the reply 🙂 Yeah they are a brilliant addition, I don't see many other travel vloggers doing this and it really helps if any viewers want to recreate any bits of your trips 👍
Always enjoy your vids, thank you
Such beauty, great viaducts, sweet little houses, narrow streets, beautiful sea shore and you two. Who could ask for anything more. Thank you
You too and Scotland is just amazing! Love to watch your videos! The world needs more of this.
Thanks and greetings from ugly stressfull Germany
Beautiful quaint, rustic town, Cullen. Wow, the Rock formations! Hope you both find a very nice restaurant with hot soup, fish n chips. 😋 YUM!
very picturesque - a slow journey through those parts would be heavenly
