Aww, brings back some childhood memories! Been on this lady a few times while she was called M/S Athena and sailed for Viking Line between Stockholm and Mariehamn. One of the wow factors in the early 90s was that half the car deck was sectioned-off and housed a kind of theme park with golf simulator, arcades and some other big moving hydraulic simulator. Love how innovative these ferry companies have always been. The whole "cruise ferry" thing got started due to the rivalry of Viking Line and Silja Line and really pushed the standard for how ferry travel is now done.
The question is did he choose the 5-year loan or the 30-year mortgage to finance his cup of coffee? When I was there I used 10 NOK to 1USD (it was 8:1) and I had to stop converting. I couldn't do anything about it anyway. I went from Norway to Vietnam. 20$ in your hand in Norway gets you a cup of coffee and half a sandwich. In Vietnam that's all 3 meals and more than enough beers for the full day. Norway is beautiful. BTW- it helps if you have family/friends in Norway. My cousins covered a lot of my trip.
Scandinavian ferries are a thing of their own. Inexpensive but fully equipped entertainment ships. You should try the ferry lines between Stockholm to Åland/Finland/Estonia, but beware, they're more party than travel sometimes. All the cities are beautiful and Åland is a small treasure on its own. Btw the Helsingør castle is supposedly the castle Shakespeare had in mind for Hamlet, and Helsingør is a pretty, little town. Just across lies Helsingborg in Sweden, and just to let you know the ferry culture, Swedes from the region frequently goes "touring" or tura which means they buy a ticket and spend the evening going back and fort between the towns having dinner and drinks on board. We love our ferries.
One of the reasons for the low cost of the Scandinavian ferries is the very high taxes on liquor and cigarettes. The ferries do a very good business both in the on-board bars and in the duty-free shops. When my sister lived in Stockholm, she and her friends would take the ferry to Finland to have a weekend out as the drinks were cheap. When I was visiting Copenhagen in 1970, we (I was staying with a family friend) took the ferry (a very short ride) to Sweden. I was really surprised that, as soon as we arrived, we got right back on the ferry. I was disappointed not to get a chance to see Malmö, as the entire point was to buy a couple of cartons of cigarettes.
Steve, I have just viewed this video, even though you did it 2 years ago, and I’m blown away with what you manage to capture on film and then edit it so professionally. You are taking me around the northern parts of Europe in style. Please keep them coming from Scandinavia. The scenery and the cleanliness of all those countries in the north is spectacular. I’d watch anything you film. I’m in my 70’s and unable to travel extensively any more, sticking to my part of the world (Australia and Asia), so enjoy your trips immensely. That ferry looked very good value for 60 quid. I’m off to Japan soon and I can tell you it’s costing me a bomb by comparison. Your trip looked like much better value. Loved it!
I spent a week in Copenhagen this past summer and I found it to be the quietest major city in Europe I've ever been to. Outside of the main attraction areas, people were very quiet and some neighborhoods didn't even have cars moving through them but for a few every ten minutes. The parks are very tranquil and the general vibe was low key. Can't believe you took the ferry there and just split. Maybe that's your thing, I'm new to this channel. Definitely going to try a DFDS to Oslo. Subscribed.
I always find copenhagen to be the most noisy and stressed out of the nordic main cities. Even Stockholm is more chill, and Stockholm is not that chill. Oslo and Helsinki dor sure is. The there is Aarhus, Åbo, gothemburg and Malmö as well. I never been to trondheim so don't know how it is there.
@@matsv201 Its nice in Trondheim also, at least when I passed through many years ago (I have visited a majority of the famous wooden Stave Churches around in Norway, and have - passed the one sold to Germany also!).
Amazing views sailing out of Oslo, have you ever sailed into Stockholm Steve? If not you should take the Stockholm - Helsinki ferry, the views through the Stockholm archipelago are the very best I have seen from a ship.
I was on the same ship a month after you filmed yours. With the dinner buffet and solo ensuite cabin, my trip cost ~£100. It was relaxing and fun (there was entertainment onboard), and I will not hesitate to do it again.
Thank you very much for all your beautiful programs!! I will never by able to visit all these places and by watching your programs, I can visit them all!! Thanks again, Tilly from South Africa
That really is incredible all that ferry has to offer! 19 hour trip with your own room and the boat looks like it has enough to do to keep you occupied. I always love your videos, my friend! I'll admit, this is the first one I have had time to watch in a while! It was great as always.
Wow I wish I had as much enthusiasm as you Steve. I love my travelling and adventures, but you are in another league. Always great to see you out and about on your journeys.
The DFDS Harwich to Esbjerg needs to be re-instated. Great shame when that was run down, then stopped. I was raised in Denmark, and travelled on that route many times from child to adulthood. Originally, it was like getting to Denmark the moment you were on board. Good times started even before setting sail, and only stopped when back at Harwich! Restaurants were spot on.
Sadly my Company, DFDS (I'm a Share Owner (minority!)), only sails goods from Esbjerg to Hull today, besides having routes from NL to GB (And many other places, up the Baltic and also in the Mediterranean!). I never managed to use it myself.
@@finncarlbomholtsrensen1188 That's a shame, it was a great service, but was run down to be more commercial and less ferry cruise in the final years. But when it was running properly, it was a superb service, and made trips to Denmark an absolute pleasure. Taking one's own car meant it was no problem to drive anywhere, and with all the luggage needed. Likewise, when coming back, one could fill the car with Danish food and provisions. We usually drove straight to København, stayed there for half the time, visited Tivoli every night, then spent the rest of the holiday touring the rest of Denmark, including all the places where we once used to live. Very happy times.
@@finncarlbomholtsrensen1188 I suppose the Esbjerg to Hull is limited to freight only, nowadays? I don't think there are still passenger ferry routes from the UK to anywhere north of the Netherlands...
@@barvdw A friend of mine had a son being educated in by then owner Maersk, and if not filled with lorry drivers Some came as only - trailers, being managed by the crew), they did accept passengers, so he (+wife) came over as a passenger. I have asked the present owner, DFDS (I'm a Shareholder) if is is still possible, but sadly no!
As a Dane and a Shareholder in the Danish Shipowner/Ferry Company, DFDS (also sailing ferries from NL to England and as a pure freight/truck ferry from Esbjerg to Hull) I thank you for making this film! I have done this trip many times, from in an inside cabin for 4 and in an outside, luxury cabin for two, with a large window and view for sailing through the Oslo Fiord in the morning. A small rocky island is passed with hardly room for a single summerhouse and formerly also the constant oil spill from the, by then brand new German Warship Blücher, which was sunk during the invasion the 9th of april 1940! With a fresh crew they wasn't able to stop the water coming in from a hit with a Norwegian torpedo from an old Fort to the side of the fiord! It was pumped dry from fuel oil some years ago, still being considered a war grave, because many men were lost.
I saw Your verdict on the southern DFDS route to NL, which I had forgotten (It is my one offer as a shareholder in DFDS, if I want to go to England). But being a major Ferry Company they also sail in the Baltic and in the Mediterranean. At one time also from Esbjerg to Harwich but they stopped this some years ago.
These Scandinavian cities have many attractive features from which we can all learn. The ferry appears to be good value, nearer to a cruise liner than a ferryboat.
Long time viewer; First time Commenter: Get back and do the saunas in winter! Love your videos mate, and particularly the ferries. You’re giving me lots to put together to build a trip around. Hope to see some more Cal Mac stuff soon. Thanks for delivering one of the highlights of my Saturday! 👍🏻
8 minutes into the video and I’m already a fan of your accent 😁…….. and top notch camera quality, sound, colours, images and catching narrative. thank you, well done 🙌🏻
Thanks for this Steve. What a beautiful city Oslo is, as is Stockholm, Helsinki and Copenhagen. I used to go to all these when I was a young seaman around 1960/61.
Great video! Here is a little history lesson for you about her. She was built in 1989/1990 for Viking Line as m/s Athena and she sailed on the Stockholm-Mariehamn route purely as a 24 hour short cruiser. She was sold in 1993 to Star Cruises together with her sister ship m/s Kalypso (now scrapped). DFDS bought Pearl Seaways in 2001 but her name then was Pearl of Scandinavia. I think she was the biggest ferry in the world for a couple of months when she was delivered in 1989/1990.
You would enjoy the Oslo-Kiel cruise, they actually have the world’s largest cruise ferries Color Fantasy and Color Magic. It is not much more expensive at from about £65 round trip Oslo - Kiel - Oslo. You can get Oslo Copenhagen round trip from £20 - still it depends a bit on the season and special offers
Great video as usual Steve but you don't spend long enough in the cities. Copenhagen is absolutely stunning and you are a quick train ride from other amazing places including Aarhus and Roskilde and you are so close to Sweden over the bridge - Lund is really pretty.
@@frodehagen8690 It's not about the size though. It's about the people, culture, and atmosphere. Not having a good selection of decent restaurants. Restaurants not being open all night or even late in the evening. Public transport (mostly) stopping at midnight. No decent clubs. Everywhere being closed by three in the morning. Shops being closed on Sundays, and nothing open 24/7 except for small kiosks. Oslo has the vibe of a small town that manages to get by most of the time, but if you want big-city energy and excitement you go somewhere else.
@@-_James_- Sunday closures aren't uncommon in e.g. Germany as well, even in cities with a few million inhabitants, but they definitely have more international cuisine available. Still, I quite like Oslo, discovered a great Indian place for lunch a few months back (Jaipur), even had Ethiopian (can't remember the name, but a quick google search suggests Mesob) and a Peruvian food. Plus a very respectable craft beer scene (I had a friend who was a brewer there, which definitely helped to discover stuff). And which city can boast about a metro into the forest and to the ski slopes? That said, I like Copenhagen, too, I'm a city boy, and that's a proper city. Lots of beautiful (old and modern) architecture, good public transport (although they should never have removed their trams...), and some of the residential areas are great. Last year, I stayed near Svanemøllen station, quite calm, some interesting shops and bars, and easily connected to the city.

Hi Steve, Absolutely a very cheap fare for such luxury. The video was fantastic, beautiful sailing weather. Yes, do go back and try the saunas in winter. Take care and keep on traveling... blessings
That was £60 well spent Steve, the size of that ferry was overwhelming more like a luxury cruise ship! not that I would have ever considered going on one, it was terrifying when one twice the size cut across the bow of my nephew’s yacht! It was the size of a fifteen story building, 🫣 you captured some magnificent architecture on your stroll round, the scenery from the ferry was stunning, and the water in the pool looked inviting! a lovely tour all together, no wonder they named a song after wonderful Copenhagen! Well done Steve 👏👏
Watched this vlog when first aired, and promised myself the trip. Well I did it last week (Sep 2023) and it was a bit of journey to Oslo from Orkney, and back from Copenhagen, but boy was it worth it ! The ferry trip was amazing. I enjoyed it all - the sky bar, the restaurants, the other bars, the views, the calm crossing, the cabin. I had a really comfy sleep. I was prepared for the 1am stop in Fredrikshavn , having watched your trip, so I opened my eyes for a few minutes, then back to sleep. Thank you Steve for making me aware of this excellent trip.
Another great journey. Might be good idea if you both went to Oslo again to find out how to visit on the cheap & what you can visit without paying a fortune. Great work as always.
There are multiple places you can stay in Oslo and the Oslo area without paying a fortune for it. And there are plenty of places you can visit for free or very being very cheap. And there are also some experiences that can be very fun and will not cost that much to do. So I think this is a great idea to show people that they can visit and experience Oslo without paying an arm and a leg for it. It is rather frustrating as a Norwegian to see how people claim how extremely expensive it is everywhere in Norway and close to impossible for most to live in or visit. If people would do some better research and avoid running into the typical tourist traps, they would see that it doesn't have to be as expensive as they think it will be at all.
Great trip and great video, I'll have to add that to the 'to do' list. Back in the early 90s as a poor student I travelled around Scandinavia for a couple of weeks, the ferries were the best bargains then too, the ones from Stockholm to Helsinki seem to rely on everyone drinking their bodyweight in vodka in the bar, which a lot of passengers were obliging with! Copenhagen might not be Stockholm, but it's still lovely, and the central station is fantastic - if they take out the food stalls it would look how I imagine Valhalla would be.
This very much reminded me of trips from Newcastle to Stevanger and also trips to Bergen. I loved the trip to Bergen, if I recall you got a full day at sea and an overnight stop in Bergen. Sadly after 140 years of service the route stopped in 2008 and I sailed on the penultimate crossing, even 'pushed the boat out' and went Commodore class as I knew it would probably be the last time I sailed. Tried the route to Amsterdam following year but it wasn't the same.
Great video of your trip from Oslo to Copenhagen. I have done the Newcastle route to Esbjerg which was known as Scandinavian Seaways and then re-branded to DFDS Seaways, I believe this route was withdrawn a few years ago. Really enjoyed the journey and what I remember is that once your in Esbjerg, your got the train to a certain point which went onto another ferry and then straight to Copenhagen which is nice city seeing the Little Mermaid.
Correct, Steve, the Danes first finished the Great Belt Bridge in 1998, followed by the Øresund Bridge & tunnel in 2000, so you can travel without ferries from Germany to Sweden. They have embarked on an even bigger project, the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel between Rødby and Puttgarden in Germany, which should be finished by the end of the decade and spell the end of the ferry between these places (the train already no longer takes the ferry, but you can still take a train and replacement buses to the ferry at either side, while they also upgrade the railway lines), and likely some other ferries between Germany and Sweden as well...
The quality of life in Norway must be among the highest in the world. The general landscape is solidly impressive… clean…pristine even. Your video quality was remarkable. 👍🇨🇦
I did that last year. When I found out about this option, I could not believe the prices. The Ferry is comparatively simple and frugal, but it does its job. My sister lives near Oslo, and when I visit her in future, I will always use this service from now on.

60 quid is really good value especially considering you are sailing between two very expensive cities! I might try that 'cruise' myself if I get the opportunity.

Quite a bargain considering the length of the trip. As far as I am concerned a ship beats a plane any day! Great video Steve, looking forward to the next one.
As the ferries from Oslo are a big cash cow, you can quite often get a return trip for a very low sum and even sometimes for free. Especially with the DFDS one to Copenhagen. The Oslo-Kiel ferry is a tad bit more expensive, but also offer a massive and cruise line style ship. Very popular mini vacation boats, and also for job conferences and so on.
I took the same ferry from Oslo to Denmark in 2019. I really enjoyed this 19 hours journey. They have very good buffet restaurant on the ship and quite good duty free shop on board.
We did the reverse run from Copenhagen to Oslo and had a wonderful time back in April 2019. I give it 5 out of 5 stars. I’d take that trip again (even in those tiny, for 2 people, rooms).

I've lived in Stockholm 15 years now, Steve, and I have to admit Copenhagen is the coolest, most relaxed of the 4 Nordic capitals. It's the same size as Oslo too - the city/conurbation statistics can be misleading
@@johnnymartinjohansen I don't have to *decide*, do I? That's the point: there can be anywhere from 4 to 8. There's no point correcting me, and you know exactly what the 4 I'm referring to are
@@davidlittle7182 No, it can NOT be "anywhere from 4 to 8". There are 5 independent countries, with their own capitals, so there are NEVER less than 5. Then there are 3 self-governed territories with their own "capitals", but are still owned by other countries - in other words, they are not independent. So it depends on how you regard the territorials. And if you accept 1 of their capitals as legit, you must accept all, because their form of government is the same. So the answer is 5 or 8. Nothing else.
£60 isn't even that good of a price for this trip, you can often get it much cheaper as DFDS constantly have campaigns and offers throughout the year. Usually I pay around £17 for this trip in the same type of cabin. Sometimes you even get tickets for free! They are desperate to get people to come aboard and spend money in the bars and restaurants there, which is VERY expensive, so bringing your own food is recommended. When I last took this journey in April, the cheapest meal they had was a small plate of spaghetti Bolognese for £24!
The DFDS ferries that used to run from Harwich to Denmark and Newcastle to Gothenburg were a great experience, It's a shame in these days of planes causing pollution that they haven't been re started. We used to do the Harwich one quite a lot but always stocked up at Morrisons in Harwich, carry our own kettle and tea bags and in a 2 berth cabin with port hole, it was always an enjoyable trip. Having lived in Sweden for some years , I still miss the cleanliness and spaces of Scandinavia.
@@steve-marsh Maybe we could start a petition and start writing to DFDS !! I still go to Sweden several times a year . He made a nice video, but he's dead wrong about Copenhagen.
We don't call it Wonderful, Wonderful Copenhagen for no reason :)
Haha cheers Paul! I'm 90% of the time knackered :D
Yes. I did that trip several times, and absolutely loved it!

@@steve-marsh- Steve, is that fresh or salt water @ 12:55 and how warm is the water?
And what a beautiful trip he took us on. Thanks Steve!
Thanks so much for this comment, really appreciate it :)

@@TeluguPie DFDS no longer sails from Copenhagen, but has sold the route. It has been bought by a Swedish Line.
These Scandinavian cities have many attractive features from which we can all learn. The ferry appears to be good value, nearer to a cruise liner than a ferryboat.

I thought all ships had to be scraped for barnacles, before they were scrapped! lol
@@drdoolittle5724 haha autocorrect is a bitch. 😅

Nice to know that sailing expertise is a tradition carried on to this day, perhaps rooted in necessity, but nevertheless. Thanks for the info rundown.
Yeah, time is often against me (normally due to accommodation costs). I've spent longer in Copenhagen in the past, we've just never really clicked
@@steve-marsh I guess it depends what you're looking for. Copenhagen is a real city. Oslo is the capital village of Norway.
@@-_James_- You are right. Only one million in the city area. Size isn’t everything you know. ,p
Another well put together vlog.

Taxes are very high on alcohol and tobacco in Norway so people get the ferry to Denmark and back for the weekend just to have a good time while stocking up on booze

Hi Steve,
Absolutely a very cheap fare for such luxury.
Thanks Bernice! Yeah, this was much more like a cruise to me :)
Great idea Christopher, cheers!
@@steve-marsh would be great, will definitely watch it
There are multiple places you can stay in Oslo and the Oslo area without paying a fortune for it.
That sounds awesome, but I have a horrible feeling the train on ferry bit has been discontinued

I've lived in Stockholm 15 years now, Steve, and I have to admit Copenhagen is the coolest, most relaxed of the 4 Nordic capitals. It's the same size as Oslo too - the city/conurbation statistics can be misleading
There are 5 Nordic capitals...
@@johnnymartinjohansen There are 6, 7 or 8 if you're going to be silly about it
@@davidlittle7182 Being silly? Said the one who first claimed is was only 4, and now can't decide if it's 6, 7 or 8.

Good to know!
