How to install Windows software on Linux [Step by step]

  • Here is an easy method to use many Windows programs & games in Linux. This method won't work for every Windows program out there, but it will allow you to install and run many of them.
    In this tutorial, we'll walk through the process step by step so you can use Windows applications in Linux using a Linux app called Bottles.
    Bottles uses Wine and Proton in its back end to create environments to run Windows software in Linux with ease using Bottles' graphical user interface.
    I should mention that this method won't run all Windows software. There are some programs that require more Windows system resources than Bottles can provide.
    For the walk-through, I'll demonstrate how to use Bottles by installing Ableton Live LE in Peppermint 10.
    This method works in most Linux operating system that can use Flatpaks.
    Some of the Linux distros Flatpaks can be installed on:
    ● Ubuntu ● Arch ● Peppermint OS
    ● Fedora ● Debian ● Manjaro
    ● Endless OS ● CentOS ● Garuda Linux
    ● Chrome OS ● Solus ● Zorin OS
    ● Red Hat ● Gentoo ● OpenSUSE
    ● Linux Mint ● Pop!_OS ● Elementary
    ● OpenSUSE ● EndeavourOS ● MX Linux
    (and many more)
    I've successfully used bottles in a few of the operating systems listed above but haven't tested it on all of them.

    • @StaempunkTV
      @StaempunkTV  2 года назад +1

      I've asked the Bottles devs and they said that because the Bottles Flatpak is completely independent, it shouldn't affect your previous Wine settings. Other packages (e.g. AUR) shouldn't conflict either but it depends on how WINE was packaged.

      Yep Windows can be run in a virtual machine but you'll have to have a copy of the Windows installer (plus activation keys) to do so. I might make a video showing how to in the near future.

    Do you know what's easier ?
    sudo apt install wine64 for 64 bit systems and sudo apt install wine for 32 bit systems. So now you can double click on .exe and run it
    Ez , right ?

    Don't know if you can help? I'm trying to download Catalyst Control Suite which is my graphic card client. I'm able to go through the whole installation process but and it seems to be successful, but the program never shows up under 'programs'. I've done it multiple times and I just keep going through the installation process over and over again. I tried to do the installation process from the programs tab but it just comes up with an error and won't even 'install'. Do you know of any possible fixes or solutions?

    • @StaempunkTV
      @StaempunkTV  Год назад

      @Little Wing I don't have experience with the Catalyst Control Suite but I'd guess that because it is a system controller it will likely be incompatible in Linux because the Linux system is different from the Windows system so the 'folders and files' that it will look for to operate won't exist even if you were able to install it.
      The AMD website has a page about proprietary drivers that might have helpful info:

    I installed bottles, on a fresh install of MX 21.1, via the flatpak repo, that comes with MX Linux. It installed, and opened,but at first run, it tells you it needs to install "runners", it did nothing, it just said downloading, but nothing finished. Any ideas? Thank you.

    • @StaempunkTV
      @StaempunkTV  2 года назад

      @Robert Maxa Perhaps check your internet connection, that's usually the reason runners don't download at install. You should be prompted to download the required runners when you create a new Bottle anyway so don't worry about the install missing the step. The manual is really good and the Bottles developers are really helpful too and can be reached on Twitter.

    • @StaempunkTV

      @locutz Go to your home directory and press Ctrl + H to show hidden folders. Then navigate to:
      (Substitute "Ableton-Live-10" with whatever your version is called)
      .var/app/com.usebottles.bottles/data/bottles/bottles/Ableton-Live-10/drive_c
      From there you should be able to find where your VSTs normally reside in Windows and then point to them when you're in Ableton. Good luck!

      @blackend00 It's really a matter of trial and error. There are some apps that won't install and others that do. Most apps that I use like Photoshop CC and Ableton Live can be installed fine. The cool thing is that if you try to install an app (like Solidworks) and it doesn't work, there is no affect to the rest of your system as everything takes place in the Bottles app. Good luck!

      There are only 2 ways that I know of to run Adobe Premier Pro on Linux but as far as I'm aware, Premier Pro is not very compatible with Linux operating systems.
      The 1st way would be to install Windows in a VM and then install Premier.
      The 2nd way would be to install PlayOnLinux. Then download Adobe Creative Cloud from the official site, open PlayOnLinux and install the Premier the way you would install it on Windows.
      I haven't tried it myself nor do I have an Adobe subscription so let me know how you go if you try.
