    She has OCD and she needs control. The anorexia is an obsession and it’s how her OCD is manifesting. This isn’t the case in all anorexia but in hers it is. Treat the OCD, positive affirmation, restrict internet access completely. Evey pound gained gets a reward. I used to weight 73 pounds. Nothing worked. Until a doctor treated my OCD. I’m 48, weight 120 pounds and have for decades.

      Thats exactly what I was just about to comment.....it screams OCD, so many traits, I'm 44 and have suffered from OCD in the most horrendous ways since 5 years old and although I got treated, the OCD just manifests into different ways, changes, evolves......it comes back in 'different clothing' ..... a brain addiction, the worst form of addiction ❤

      This is not an uncommon presentation of anorexia nervosa / OCD. I struggled with the same thing. Now fully recovered from the anorexia. I've had OCD all my life (earliest memory of OCD at 3 years old). So I think I may always struggle with OCD tendencies at least. But it too is loads better today. Prozac was essential to recover from anorexia. That and Intensive therapy, primarily DBT.

    These parents are very loving and kind. They have an understanding that is beautiful to see. Plus with mum’s history she knows what is like. I too suffered from an eating disorder and was hospitalized. They may already know this but another part of anorexia is not wanting to grow up. If this addiction were similarly criminalized, prisons would be overflowing with patients. Instead, these addicts receive care, while other addicts receive cages. Why not use the exact same approach? “Tough Love” (total abandonment of family and resources) is the norm for addicts. Why not these ones? Why is this family not encouraged to “Make her hit rock bottom” and “stop enabling her” with a home and love??

      1. Food isn’t an illegal substance.
      2. A drug addict craves more of their drug, an anorexic already denies themselves.
      3. Anorexics don’t steal to feed their habit
      4. Many years of research has shown different methods are needed for different addictions and mental illnesses.
      Both addicts and anorexics need inpatient care. Trying to stop any of them from killing’s themselves is very difficult.

    One year ago today, my daughter was on a waitlist to go to a residential facility for bulimia/anorexia. She weighed under 100lbs and 5'5" tall. Yes, I did see the weight loss. At first, I thought it was because she was more active and ate differently. But as her illness became more, her weight dropped almost dramatically. We would see her eat, but of course, she was purging it up. That is what we never caught. Until finally, she was confronted at school by her friends and who also went and told her counselor. The counselor gave her an ultimatum that either she confess to us, or we would get a call from the school. I was devastated. I felt horrible that I didn't demand she tell me what was going on before instead of trying to cajole it out of her nicely. For six months she was in treatment. She is still in therapy and still slips up purging, but her weight is normal again. I still keep tabs on her eating and continue to make her meals. But she still battles this daily. I never thought I would experience this as a mother, as diet was never part of my vocabulary or even looks either. But it's hard to break free from. Some of the girls she was in residential with, went back because they couldn't over come it. It's hard to understand why they just can't eat, but there is definitely something in their brain that causes this. And the more they with hold food, the sicker their brain becomes. I worry for her in the future, but I hope she has the tools to try to overcome it now. My heart breaks for those going through this. What I saw at the facility is not just teen girls. There were boys, grown adults, elderly, etc. It's a very sad situation.

    My great-aunt started off being anorexia at age 17 after her mother kept telling her she was "gross and fat" which was why her boyfriend kept leaving her. Years later now married to the boyfriend her father passed then she switched from anorexia to bulimia. She's been bulimic since, now she's 76. In all those years she never even as much caught a cold as working long hours as a high school teacher and lots of after school participation. Three years ago she became very ill, she had to have her stomach removed. Three years since and no stomach she still feels huge. She has always looked like a skeleton with a thin sheet over her and 20 yrs older than her real age. Now she looks like death. But she keeps living her life believing she's morbidly obese. BTW. She was never ever even slightly overweight, her mother was just cruel. After she became anoxic/bulimic her mother seemed pleased.

      Honestly, after the first week or two of severely restricting/fasting... no, you don't really notice the hunger as much. Also, filling up with water/coffee/tea helps to keep you feeling comfortable. I've dealt with disordered eating on and off for 20 years (as a result of anxiety/OCD). It truly is addictive for people who crave control, with the irony being that it gets to the point where the disorder is controlling you.

      You can’t just force feed someone like that. Especially if she’s already an adult. Force feeding also tends to be traumatic. Just because you get them tube fed and back to a healthy weight doesn’t mean they are cured. Tube feeding unfortunately isn’t a cure. Like with other mental illnesses the person has to be willing to help themselves. Like the saying goes, you can’t help someone who is not willing to help themselves. One tragic example was the young woman named Emma from the documentary “Emma wants to live”. She had life long treatment which included multiple tube feedings. It didn’t work. So saying stuff like “just eat” or “just tube feed them” isn’t helpful at all. It’s the equivalent of telling someone with major depressive disorder to just “cheer up”. At least from my understanding.

      I think it’s counterproductive to force feed. Of course it might temporarily keep the person from dying of heart failure.

    • @cinnamoslut
      @cinnamoslut 7 дней назад

      @@carollyntright, but a distorted perception of self image and body size, as well as denial of body size / thinness, are symptoms of anorexia nervosa listed in the diagnostic criteria (not in those exact words, paraphrasing). So it's quite common. But yeah, not all have body dysmorphic disorder.
      I knew I was very thin when I was ill, but I'd like hyper focus on a pinch of 'fat' on my thigh. Zone in on little 'imperfections' like that. Presentation can vary.
