I am a nurse working in mental healthcare with $50,000 in student loan debt. The government could easily make it free for potential psychiatrists, psychologists and nurses to go to college and agree to serve 10 years in the mental health field and then perhaps we would see more providers. Who wants to become a psychiatrist and owe $600,000 in student loans to do a job that has incredibly high burnout? Incentivize going into mental health careers by making it free to get educated and we will see a much better functioning system.

@@peg7997 I am 70...the only ever family I had was a very mentally ill mother.. but as a child I did not know it.. I just knew there was something not right with my mother. I used to tell her I wish she was dead and I was an orphan... and I can see how right I was .. she died a very long time ago. But the point I wish to make is that I have only done what I have because I have no fear of death at all. So I have taken huge risks other men do not.. most people envy my life.. but they don't have the courage I have.. and I only have that courage because I am not upset about the idea of not being alive tomorrow

We have them in America too, the issues are that some don't want to actually do the job our dollars are paying them to do(happened when refused to test my youngest for Autism) and when they do- it's the label that damages and sticks forever because of our culture. Also, the ALL of the Police I've ever come into contact with where mental health could even be brought into the conversation have been very clear where they stand and it's not in a place of understanding or support, but judgement and acting with caution.

humans have been evolving slowly over a 200,000 years , never before has our species had such a fast and dramatic shift in our environment. Our physical and mental abilities are not equipt to deal with all of the many stressors that bombard us everyday. I have two major depressive episodes, one was post natal depression and the other was due to suffering a life changing physical injury. Both times and I have received mental health treatment due to the suicidal idealisation that was a preoccupation and staying alive took every punch of strength I had to stay alive. I was setting goals of staying alive for just 30 minutes more at a time. That is all I could digest, looking to far ahead was too overwhelming and I did not know who I could survive living the way I was for any longer than that 30mins. It is the most horrific and exhausting thing to ever go through. Looking back, I should not be here, my children saved my life, I could not stand the thought of putting them through more suffering than I was going through, my struggle was worth their wellness and happiness. I’m one of the ones that was not meant to leave before there time, for that I am grateful that my children still have there mother. It’s still hard 20 and 5 years since these episodes, I take life one day at a time, I love life and I love my family and I have so much gratitude, however I do not love feeling darkly and deeply depressed for months on end and I don’t know if I could survive another episode. So to those who are struggling, I understand your struggles, but hold on for half an hour more. ❤ I love you and you are worth giving yourself a chance at getting well again. X

Totally agree. I think we need reminding of where we have come from sometimes . It must seem to most people that the way we live is normal but honestly i dont think so . As humans we have managed to do some outstanding things ...look atound ! ..but the reason for our great achievements isnt because we were the biggest baddest predator , or the strongest fastest creature. We are here because we cooperate , we defer out personal need to the greater good , we communicate and collaborate.
Thats our secret and it comes from strong cohesive social bonds and structured societies and shared goals .
Unfortunately as pawns in the current economic paradigm these are old fashioned ideas .
I think people feel to end their lives becauae like a flower with no sunshine we are people with no love for each other. Ok we love our family but thats not enough we need to have love for everyone like they are brothers and sisters.
One love sisters Kiwi and Leah . You have beautiful hearts .

I had too much trauma and I was shaking with anxiety. I cut my wrist and phoned the emergency services. 1st the police came. He said that he should move the knife away from me. I said "certainly officer ",
The 2 police officers left and as weak as I was I realised and I said "you have worked out that I am not a knife wielding psychomaniac.
He explained that if a weapon is used the police have to attend. He also sometimes gets nice people who can suddenly change after being nice. I was flattered that the police didn't seeany aggression in me
I told the paramedic why and he explained how I could have handled it.
I remember thinking that he was right but I feel to weak to deal with everything. I don't have a family.
I remember the paramedic saying that hewas going to put saline on the wounds and it may sting.
I said "well, I have brought it on myself ".
When we got to A+E the paramedic even saw me to the cubicle. He said words like good luck. I looked at him and said his name and I smiled and he wishing me all the best ".

The next morning I had a panic attack and didn't want to move but when I knew I was voluntary I felt calmer. I could go out but I had a bad back and the shrink said I wouldn't be getting cocodamol twice a day because it wasn't on my repeat script. I have a disc pushing on a nerve in my back.. she said I could have regular paracetamol. I said it wouldn't even touch the pain.
So I went out for a cigarette and found found a chemist. I hid them in my skirt and handed over my boots, jacket, handbag. I also had 2 receipts. You can guess which receipt was discarded. The receipt handed in had mouth wash, shampoo,my favourite soap.
My friend brought my hair brush but gave me 2 of her dresses. Monica is deceased now RIP
I had to ask for my other painkiller Pregabalin but I got it.
I didn't talk much but listened to the patients who spoke to me.
The boredom got to me but I was OK also.
I only had 5minutes with the shrink. I was invited to the art room and I said that I preferred to write. OK.
I wrote a suicide letter and to my late friend Charlie thanking him for the Christmas Dinner we attended one year and how loved and cared for I felt that day.
The food in the hospital was rank.
But it was only 10 days due to being the least unwell.

Most suicidal ideation is temporary and comes in waves of intensity and is the result of treatable mental illness. And most people who survive suicide choose to go on living. Once you have taken your life, you can't change your mind. The profession of psychiatry and psychology exists, in part, to change people's minds before they kill themselves successfully. There is nothing abusive about trying to change people's minds before they make a choice that they would later regret if they were to survive (I've seen my share of people with spinal cord and brain injuries caused by suicide attempts) and causes devastation to their family. That being said, I agree there are rare cases where suicide might be rational; terminal illness, treatment refractory depression for years, for example.

Legally assisted death should be available for everyone over 40. Why is always portrayed as if we are all valuable people who should want to live? Some of us are neither - and years of this life has proven that. If the suic*de epidemic explodes, maybe there will be enough mental health resources for the unlucky ones left behind.

It WAS a great system before when they were out in the mental asylums where they had jobs and people around them to make sure they bathed and ate and didnt fall into the drug scene. They were taken well care of in those places. My relative lived in one and he seemed fine. Their jobs there also meant they were self providing and werent paied by the state.
Then they were closed and we had streets filled with lunatics and it just got worse from there on, now we have a drug epidemic AND mental cases everywhere in society. Where I live (in europe) its so bad one cannot even go to the beach anymore without seeing drug affected people and mental cases flipping out. Its horrible to see and they even know it themselves, just yesterday I watched this young girl freak out and when she noticed me looking she was ashamed of herself and that wasnt the first time I saw a mental case over there. Young women freak out over anything, birds last time..Birds..Regular common birds set one off. It shouldnt be this way, they need the kind of helped they got there. I feel so bad for them.

Unfortunately, mental health issues can cause skewed perspectives to the sufferer. Although it may appear they are helpless, many DO want help and ARE grateful for the help retrospectively after healing. It is the mental condition that causes the sufferer to believe they do not want help, should just die, etc..

So they have a secret battle going on in their heads that nobody knows about. So how can somebody be helped wen nobody even knows they are depressed or thinking of taking their own lives? There are no warning signs. There's that category of people. Then there's the other category of people who have been to rehabs, saw all the professionals and they keep relapsing and going back to drink and drugs. I don't understand that part, I think that not having a religious up bringing and not having a God to pray and have faith and hope is the real cause of these illnesses, absolutely convinced about that, we all must turn to the Good Lord, he's the real answer.

I believe not having a personal relationship with God, Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, is more important than “religion”. I know what you are saying.

No they may not have understood the pain they cause, but that is unfortunately part of being unwell, a lot of people, think the family will be better off without them, they feel worthless and shame. I’ve been there and until you go through something, like anything, you will never understand because you have not suffered the pain. It’s easy to judge others and I understand what you are saying, my children stopped me from ending my life, but the suffering I felt at that time was unbearable. ❤

Jesus and Christianity are the worst of manipulators…who wants to live in a gated community with an insane entity….the cult of Christianity is dangerous and needs to be put in check.

I’ve tried praying to Jesus to meet him and states my intention to Jesus to come to me I wanted to meet him during meditation and he never came. All I see are angel numbers that’s the only sign I get. I think this is all a sadistic game for whomever is on the other side. Getting joy out of seein me and others suffer. I’m not so lucky.

the issues that create a situation where people become distressed are clear and obvious .. but no one want to discuss ANY of these issues... if someone has an elephant standing on their foot, a psychologist will try and talk to you about it and that it does not hurt as much as you think it does... a psychiatrist will give you a pain killer... I suggest we look at ways of getting the elephant off of your foot.. is this rocket science.. well seems it is....

Many dont have money to see one nor for the medication and even if they do, being dependent on a medication 'drugs' and its withdraws to come off of them or being on them is also depressing, my case is my wife of 13 yrs passed within 3 months of cancer, grief depression vs reg depression are also different - also the insomnia that follows to drive work n to live makes it way harder to deal with... in my case if I can sleep normal again I'd be ok 'without drugs n dependency' to get back to work to make said money - n truly if people cared there wouldn't be homless people, they care only because you pay them and pharma making money off of the whole issue, imho

@@beatleme2 grief has a number of stages. normally we work through the different stages but for some they get stuck on one stage of the grief process. you don't say how long you have been without your wife. it can be expected to take a number of years before the deep wound starts to heal - that is not to say you would be back to where you were before your lost your life. If she died say 10 years ago, you will have got stuck in the grief process... sometimes called exceptional grief. Grief is a normal process, but exceptional grief is a sign that you have not been able to cope where others have been able to. What the difference between the way different people handle grief is, I don't recall seeing any research on this. The last phases of grief are giving up what has been lost and reattaching to something new. That does not mean the feeling of less will ever fully go away. In my case, what is a help is instead of focusing of the negative of what has been lost, but to purposely reflect on the good times you did have. Once you get stuck in some sort of negative loop then it is very difficult to break this cycle. Attaching to something new does not mean looking for another wife. It is to attach to something that has powerful emotions that gives you some reward. I was referencing situations that are entirely of a social construct. Like lack of the means of basic living, home, food and security. Lack of good social networks what would have existed in previous generations. I can just remember in the UK, the village cohesion which is now non-existent. We can also talk about the quality of life and not just the standard of living. So yes. you have illustrated two separate issues. If you lost your wife before the end of her natural life-span, then this is not the same as when we lost a parent to old age. Homelessness is a social construct. We mostly don't have the ability to cure all cancers, but we do have the ability to resolve the homeless situation. It is the latter I prefer to focus on as this is the area we can do something about.
