I hate when people say 'it gets better'. Yes, it gets better. But then it gets bad. Then it gets good. Then it gets bad. The perpetual inconsistency is one of the reasons it's so easy to want to make it stop.

I am a nurse working in mental healthcare with $50,000 in student loan debt. The government could easily make it free for potential psychiatrists, psychologists and nurses to go to college and agree to serve 10 years in the mental health field and then perhaps we would see more providers. Who wants to become a psychiatrist and owe $600,000 in student loans to do a job that has incredibly high burnout? Incentivize going into mental health careers by making it free to get educated and we will see a much better functioning system.

humans have been evolving slowly over a 200,000 years , never before has our species had such a fast and dramatic shift in our environment. Our physical and mental abilities are not equipt to deal with all of the many stressors that bombard us everyday. I have two major depressive episodes, one was post natal depression and the other was due to suffering a life changing physical injury. Both times and I have received mental health treatment due to the suicidal idealisation that was a preoccupation and staying alive took every punch of strength I had to stay alive. I was setting goals of staying alive for just 30 minutes more at a time. That is all I could digest, looking to far ahead was too overwhelming and I did not know who I could survive living the way I was for any longer than that 30mins. It is the most horrific and exhausting thing to ever go through. Looking back, I should not be here, my children saved my life, I could not stand the thought of putting them through more suffering than I was going through, my struggle was worth their wellness and happiness. I’m one of the ones that was not meant to leave before there time, for that I am grateful that my children still have there mother. It’s still hard 20 and 5 years since these episodes, I take life one day at a time, I love life and I love my family and I have so much gratitude, however I do not love feeling darkly and deeply depressed for months on end and I don’t know if I could survive another episode. So to those who are struggling, I understand your struggles, but hold on for half an hour more. ❤ I love you and you are worth giving yourself a chance at getting well again. X

Totally agree. I think we need reminding of where we have come from sometimes . It must seem to most people that the way we live is normal but honestly i dont think so . As humans we have managed to do some outstanding things ...look atound ! ..but the reason for our great achievements isnt because we were the biggest baddest predator , or the strongest fastest creature. We are here because we cooperate , we defer out personal need to the greater good , we communicate and collaborate.
Thats our secret and it comes from strong cohesive social bonds and structured societies and shared goals .
Unfortunately as pawns in the current economic paradigm these are old fashioned ideas .
I think people feel to end their lives becauae like a flower with no sunshine we are people with no love for each other. Ok we love our family but thats not enough we need to have love for everyone like they are brothers and sisters.
One love sisters Kiwi and Leah . You have beautiful hearts .

We have them in America too, the issues are that some don't want to actually do the job our dollars are paying them to do(happened when refused to test my youngest for Autism) and when they do- it's the label that damages and sticks forever because of our culture. Also, the ALL of the Police I've ever come into contact with where mental health could even be brought into the conversation have been very clear where they stand and it's not in a place of understanding or support, but judgement and acting with caution.

I had too much trauma and I was shaking with anxiety. I cut my wrist and phoned the emergency services. 1st the police came. He said that he should move the knife away from me. I said "certainly officer ",
The 2 police officers left and as weak as I was I realised and I said "you have worked out that I am not a knife wielding psychomaniac.
He explained that if a weapon is used the police have to attend. He also sometimes gets nice people who can suddenly change after being nice. I was flattered that the police didn't seeany aggression in me
I told the paramedic why and he explained how I could have handled it.
I remember thinking that he was right but I feel to weak to deal with everything. I don't have a family.
I remember the paramedic saying that hewas going to put saline on the wounds and it may sting.
I said "well, I have brought it on myself ".
When we got to A+E the paramedic even saw me to the cubicle. He said words like good luck. I looked at him and said his name and I smiled and he wishing me all the best ".

The next morning I had a panic attack and didn't want to move but when I knew I was voluntary I felt calmer. I could go out but I had a bad back and the shrink said I wouldn't be getting cocodamol twice a day because it wasn't on my repeat script. I have a disc pushing on a nerve in my back.. she said I could have regular paracetamol. I said it wouldn't even touch the pain.
So I went out for a cigarette and found found a chemist. I hid them in my skirt and handed over my boots, jacket, handbag. I also had 2 receipts. You can guess which receipt was discarded. The receipt handed in had mouth wash, shampoo,my favourite soap.
My friend brought my hair brush but gave me 2 of her dresses. Monica is deceased now RIP
I had to ask for my other painkiller Pregabalin but I got it.
I didn't talk much but listened to the patients who spoke to me.
The boredom got to me but I was OK also.
I only had 5minutes with the shrink. I was invited to the art room and I said that I preferred to write. OK.
I wrote a suicide letter and to my late friend Charlie thanking him for the Christmas Dinner we attended one year and how loved and cared for I felt that day.
The food in the hospital was rank.
But it was only 10 days due to being the least unwell.

I attempted suicide trying to escape my ex's abuse, my middle son succeeded in 2016. Those labels and attempts were used against me in my divorce by child custody(of older teen boys) by Gaurdian who had several honest evals, but refused to read. I haven't met anyone in mental health care that doesn't have judgements or bias in their own field. My oldest is working on a PhD in social work\psychology and it still hasnt clicked for him. Most suicidal ideation is temporary and comes in waves of intensity and is the result of treatable mental illness. And most people who survive suicide choose to go on living. Once you have taken your life, you can't change your mind. The profession of psychiatry and psychology exists, in part, to change people's minds before they kill themselves successfully. There is nothing abusive about trying to change people's minds before they make a choice that they would later regret if they were to survive (I've seen my share of people with spinal cord and brain injuries caused by suicide attempts) and causes devastation to their family. That being said, I agree there are rare cases where suicide might be rational; terminal illness, treatment refractory depression for years, for example.

    • @lesliecano4963
      @lesliecano4963 8 месяцев назад +7

      Agreed 100%.
Legally assisted death should be available for everyone over 40. Why is always portrayed as if we are all valuable people who should want to live? Some of us are neither - and years of this life has proven that. If the suic*de epidemic explodes, maybe there will be enough mental health resources for the unlucky ones left behind.

It WAS a great system before when they were out in the mental asylums where they had jobs and people around them to make sure they bathed and ate and didnt fall into the drug scene. They were taken well care of in those places. My relative lived in one and he seemed fine. Their jobs there also meant they were self providing and werent paied by the state.
Then they were closed and we had streets filled with lunatics and it just got worse from there on, now we have a drug epidemic AND mental cases everywhere in society. Where I live (in europe) its so bad one cannot even go to the beach anymore without seeing drug affected people and mental cases flipping out. Its horrible to see and they even know it themselves, just yesterday I watched this young girl freak out and when she noticed me looking she was ashamed of herself and that wasnt the first time I saw a mental case over there. Young women freak out over anything, birds last time..Birds..Regular common birds set one off. It shouldnt be this way, they need the kind of helped they got there. I feel so bad for them.

Nonsense. The patients in the mental asylum suffered terribly and were tortured and killed by psychiatrists. Then they were closed due to complaints of mistreatment.
