I'm a Film student and my professor was so completely vague on how the hell this works. Best video ever, complete life saver.
Thanks !! I am an old guy. I grew up with much simpler devices; like volume, tone and record. I HATE reading instruction manuals and always try to fumble through it. You made the introduction to the Tascam very easy; so thanks for that.
You're welcome! I'm glad you found it helpful!
@@tylerherrinton great video! My date is stuck on jan 1, 2018. I can change it, then it defaults right back. Never has worked. Thanks for the excellent explanation on everything else!
Thank you so much for making this video. I feel much more confident going into filming my first wedding!
Not really "...every menu...walk thru entire process..." when on the 1st menu settings you state, "I don't even know what it does. Just turn it off." Just because you may not know what low cut filters do, doesn't mean it's not applicable to others.
Basically he understands that the DR 40 is used in weddings
Made my life easier and thank you for being so direct about everything. Wonderful and informative.
For what I need it for...Thanks!!! I've had my recorder for over 2 years!!! I learned more watching your video 'Quicker' than working with the Owner's Manual!!! Great job!!! SFGS! (Semper Fi! Godspeed!)
Thank you so much. Just got my tascam and I was dreading going through the slow and meandering tutorials-this was quick and concise!
Line level is for guitar cables and any other quarter inch cables like keyboard left and right or even mixer output etc. mic is XLR mic calbles with the 3 pins. Basically if you have the end that looks like a guitar cable plugged into the hole, use line, if you have the circular mic cable with 3 pins, use mic.
Correct, that is an input selector, not a level selection.
hey thanks, i didn't even realise you could plug a guitar jack into this thing, I thought the hole was for XLR only, but lo-and behold, you can! game changer! thanks!
Super tutorial, in depth and easy to follow.
This is the most helpful video with Tascam setting on RUclips! Thx for the hard works!!!
OMG... I've watched so many videos and this one actually answered all my questions - thank you!
Great video, easy to follow. Thank you!
You don’t need that...don’t know what that does...😂😂🤣
This is really excellent, thank you for posting!
Thank you so much for posting this video!!!
Dude awesome video man! Keep it up!
The absolute best Tascam DM 40 tutorial on RUclips. Thanks!
HEY thank you so much for this video, I had no idea how to use it and now I feel almost like a pro
Great starter tutorial, and a must watch for newbies to the Tascam as the manual gives you next to nothing on operations and settings.
Sick video man, very thorough. Thanks!
Thanks for posting this, very helpful!
Tyler: "I don't know what Initialize does"
Also Tyler: "Sometimes it will reset the settings, I don't know why"
Thanks for the great video, just a short tip back: Initialize actually does not format the card, but all the settings back to factory settings. Hope that helps too! :)
I congratulate you. You are an excellent teacher. I really like your channel. Congratulations again. God Bless you.
Tyler, way back when, I used to make and sell recordings of weddings. It was in the 70's, that really 'back when', you think? Well anyhow, in those days, the equipment was, as you could imagine, heavy and cumbersome. The reel to reel recorder alone was 70#'s, a separate mixer, mics, etc. could fill up a station wagon. One weekend, in July, with the temp in the 80's with no A/C, the church windows were all open, and the bride and groom kneeling at the alter saying their 'I do's', the absolutely worst thing happened. A fire engine raced by with lights and siren blasting. My headphones flew off, ouch, VU meters pinned and no chance to recover, I took the horrible recording home and fumbled with it for a week. I finally fixed it! Finding another wedding recording, I spliced it into this one and no one ever knew. Some body asked and I said, " If I tell you, I'll have to kill you" haha.
Tip; Auto Record (when switched on) means that the device will start recording as soon as it gets an input signal above the threshold you set. In theory, you can leave it on standby and it will trigger the recording function when the band starts playing or someone starts talking. I've got the function on my DR-70 but I don't trust it, just don't think the 'convenience' is worth the risk.
BADASS VIDEO! Helped me out so much
Thanks - I needed this video. I’m going to use one from a friend to do a live band recording for a demo and really don’t want to read through pages and pages of manual.
hi there Tyler l really love your tutorial video, you nailed it,
Thank you for your video, I've had this thing for years and have constantly battled with setting it up. Of course, 2 little set the switch to mic not line was the big one for me as I kept going through the motions but it always recorded super low (nearly inaudible) but switch it to mic instead of line and that made ALL the difference. Again thank you. Migraine subsiding.
Glad I could help!
trying to get a grip on all this new equipment i got my hands on. A quick and helpful video, thank you so much.
Very welcome! Glad it was helpful!
This was amazing!!
THANKS A LOT FOR ALL THIS INFORMATIONS
this is exactly what i needed to know!
YEAH BRO!!! Love this man, amazing and wild hype to get this going, I've had for 2 years and used very minimally but as my VO auditions increase, as should the work, my investment will come into play so I'm grateful my man. Thank you!
I legit just watched this again today, again, as more VO auditions come in. Amazing.
i bought the newer 40x , great little recorder...thank for explaining everything and for the tips!
Amazing vid!
Track Inc. is for Incremental recording, saves multiple files over time in case the unit dies or the files corrupt. Very very useful!
Yes and it doesn't stop the recording or even slightly pauses it
Well Done Mate ! Thank You Very Much !
Hey man just want to say thank you for this video. I bought this same device the menu doesn’t have the same as yours . But it’s funny because it appears you did video 5 years ago and in tech land thats yonks ( Ages) but still this recorder was made well and sound is incredible…
Great.... one of the best tutorials ....thank you so much.
Glad it was helpful!
After watching this managed to work out how to record electronic kit and track. Really easy to understand video . 👍🏿👍🏿
Great video!!!
Bravo! You answer my question about how I can mute the internal mics. I think I will only use them for static inside recording.
I’ve got this one. Works well. Gets the job done. I’ll save this video!
Thank you for this video it was very helpful
Thanks Tyler! It was great to get a standard set up video without going too deep in the weeds!
Great video/tutorial!
Thanks! Glad you found it helpful!
thank you so much man for the video. just bouaht a used recorder. thanks once again.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Good tech info, thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Great information thanks for share
thank you so much bro
Thanks for the great video. You were clear about plugging in a condenser mic into the left and needing to choose phantom power so can you plug in a dynamic mic on the right? Would that dynamic mic be fried if the TASCAM is set on phantom?
Thank you so much!!
Just found this and this is THE MOST INFORMATIVE TASCAM DR40X TUTORIAL I have found. Exemplary.
Haha well thank you!
Thank you!
amazing thank you so much!!!!
You're so welcome!
Hey there I just got one
And I was wonderin if you could show how to use it when ur recording a band
Thank you so much😊
Thank you very much, now I'm able to record clean audio with this tutorial, although I have 40X.
Clarification on the side Line is for quarter inch cable, Mic is for xlr cable that doesn't require phantom power like off a mixing board, Mic Phantom is for microphones that require Phantom power
Great Video....👊🏼
Thank you 😊!!
Pretty good for not knowing about some of the settings. The important stuff is good. Thanks. Does the headphone monitor work always by default. Can you hear the sound though the mics via the headphone before you hit the second record signal as a test for levels and overall sound? Thanks for your help.
Thank you just spent the last 4 hours trying to find the right recording mode for recording from djm 600 xlr to jack EXT Line In. Found it now though at last. Every dance music track was had a double beat delay like trying to process 2 signals at once. The manual that comes with it id quite basic I'm not the most technically minded though. Haha
Great info
Asante sana..you helpes
Nice video !
BIG Thanks!!
THANK YOU!!!
Thanks for sharing. 🦅🇺🇸
thank you!
Ever had a “write timeout” error? Recorded 2 sessions same day. 1st one recorded for almost an hour. 2nd one stopped after 30 seconds with the error.
Hi thanks for the tips ! But How to record simultaneously the DR40 stereo mic on a track (ambient) + an external mic on an other track ? while keeping the input levels settings independent ?
Thanks
Selecting 4 channel mode and selecting independent
2:25 thanks this was really frustrating trying to figure out why the audio was peaking and why I couldn't turn it down
I want to know if the line out / headphones to a dslr or video camera will record the signal outputted from the tascam?
Thank you, 2nd time watching this. Just came back after not using the DR40x for a year or so
thank you🙏
Thanks for the video, I have a quick question. I use the DR-40 for band recording, audio only. I recently tried four channel recording using two pencil condenser mics. However the right channel is not recording. The microphones and the XLR cables were taken out of the equation, they all work. I have record mode set on ‘4 channel’ and ‘EXT 1/2’. I use ‘Mic + phantom’ setting, with 48 V of phantom power. Is there a setting missing? Could it have something to do with The mixer settings? Thanks in advance
I don't usually comment on RUclips, but this video helped in so many ways.
Thanks! I've had this thing for a year and now know how to use it - almost. Can I use an adapter and plug a lav mic in?
Awesome, glad it was helpful! I've never tried that but theoretically you could get a 1/8-1/4 inch adapter and use a lav mic? worth a shot!
Thank you.
You deserve a sub
Well done
Thank you!!
You're welcome!
Hi! Thanks so much! What a great video! Question: I am using this recorder to film commercials at home with the Sennheiser MKE600. Is there any reason I need to record in Dual mode or can I use mono? What is the benefit? I am an audio beginner
Can you show how the XLR is connected to the speaker? I'm stressing out about how to connect them together.
bought a couple years ago and even with ;manual never could figure out how to actually get this to record so it went in a storage box and I use my trusted applications on my phone. Dolby has a great app for smartphones and you don't need to have the waste of money on this.
Someone just gave this to me for a job and said "good luck". Thanks to you, I'm not screwed!
Thank you sir! I've had this recorder for a while and every time I plugged it in to the dj speaker or system I always end up with a bunch of mumbling noise in the background lol🤦♀ I just found out why, because I didn't set my source right, and all the videos I watched on YT didn't explain that clearly. So, thank you!
Cool cool!
very helpful
Glad to hear that!!
Is the dual recording will it give you a louder mix cause that’s basically my only problem with recording is making it much louder im a dj and doing post production sucks when all i need is more umph in loudness
Can you record internal mics and external at the same time? Can you do quick switches like zoom H5? Or is it all menu?
Nice! I have a question? My Tascam 40X Records but after an hour or so it doesn't record audio on the card, its blank. Before I used to record over 2 hours straight without any problem. Is there a reset or a special setting I to know about? I'm using the external XLR input.
Thank you for the effort to help me and everyone understands how to set up the TASCAM! One question, what is XRI Mode? The tree options that are under it are OFF, ON, and ON+GPS; should I leave it off?
Tyler, also I forgot to tell you that back then, there was no sound tech, i was it. Had to place all the mic's and mix them myself. So, the preacher had a mic, the couple had mics at the kneeling pads and if anyone else wanted to speak, a mic had to be available. So, I was busy, plus afterward, I had to out of there before the next event. What a rush!
Great video! on my screen on the right side it says SPEED & EFFECT. I have EFFECT turned off
thank you)
Im shooting a short film. Im going to run a rode ntg 8 on channel 1. On channel to can I run a xlr splitter for rode go 2 and record an additional left and right or will it just be mono?
Excellent
Thanks!
Hey there, Ty. Thanks for making this video. Please help: looking to record from a mixer's line out while also capturing room ambiance. Did a test with your instructions, "Selecting 4 channel mode and selecting independent". While it totally worked, I think what I now have is a file in which a mix from both elements have been captured on a single track, can therefore no longer be edited separately (ie. adjust the balance between line-in and room ambience). Want to make sure I get these elements, but that they remain separate and editable. Please advise: time-sensitive request. Thanks!
Yep that’s correct you’ll just take the clip, separate the stereo channels into mono and mix independently!
