Is it worth the extra $10 or so to pick up the DR05X over the original? I certainly think so! Super cool, the ability to use it as an audio interface. So much power in such a tiny unit. Check out the Tascam DR05x here: amzn.to/3alwUoF
Pues yo adquirí el otro día una unidad de DR-05V02 reacondicionada, y he rcibido la caja de una DR-05X. Espero que la unidad esté realmente nueva como parece la propia caja
My DR-05 just died after 11 yrs of occasional use. Some of the live band recordings I've made with the DR-05 over the years are pretty amazing. Looking forward to using the DR-05X.
This is such good content! You demystified my DR-05X in a mere 13 minutes and 15 seconds. I'm new to audio recording and I was feeling a bit overwhelmed. I feel much more confident now and can't wait to start working on my motovlog.
I purchased one of these for recording interviews because I like quality audio. Now I'm using it for content creation as well. The sound is amazing. Thanks for the tips on use. Especially on the input record volume!
Even though I have a newly acquired DR-07x, I stumbled upon this video and it was SO helpful! Thank you so much for helping me to understand some things that I had no clue looking at this sucker. 😄 So grateful for the tutorial.
Dude, I started watching your audio tutorials weeks ago when I bought the DR-05X, and I just now realized you're also a magician. I've been performing magic for over 20 years, and I've always wanted to be a filmmaker as well but I'm just now getting around to it. Those 2 fields have always seemed to go hand-in-hand, so it's cool to find another artist who is into both! Your tutorials have been very helpful. Looking forward to the upcoming premier on your other channel 'How to do live theater during a pandemic'. This definitely needs to be addressed. Anyway, keep up the good work, and thanks for the quality info.
Hey Brian, thanks for taking the time and effort to produce this excellent, easy to follow, video tutorial on the setup and use of the Tascam DR-05X. I used Tascam professional products about 20-years ago and I'm happy to know it manufactures a hand held recording device that I can use for dictation (to text using software not included), as well as other recording needs. Really appreciate your time.
Just picked this model up last night. Did absolutely no research, just got it b/c it was on sale. have to say I'm extremely pleased with my results. Used it to record at a rave which, I was flying a drone to capture video.
This told me what i was missing: SD CARD READER option in USB CONNECT. All I need to do is record my band rehearsal, then upload that file to my PC for work in Audacity. The manual shows nothing about this, only about AUDIO I/F, which got me nowhere. Very simple, now that I know how. Thank you much.
Great video Brian. I have the Tascam DR -05. I purchased it due to your recommendation in your review of it. It is an amazing unit. It has served me well. Thank you for your work. I've gain a great deal of knowledge from your channel and look forward to new videos from you.
I have one arriving today, looking forward to doing some ambient/nature recordings. The only thing I don't like, are the micro USB types. They are flimsy and when they were the 'new thing' 10-15 years ago, I had a few items break purely due to that type of usb socket! On small items like this, USB C should already be the standard, like it has been on phones for years. I'd pay the extra few coins. Great content and very helpful video, thanks.
This is one of the best tutorials on RUclips. I just bought one for my motovlogging. 1st time I used it was a disaster. But after watching your video, I think I have the right settings. You got a new subscriber!
Many years ago i bought a Tascam 4 track to use making demos for the band i was in. Fast forward 20 yrs and i am trying to put together a home studio. I bought a Tascam 24 track and soon regretted that did this. I should have gotten Pro Tools. It records to a SD card and the more tracks you put on it the less recording time you have. Ive been using looper pedals for capturing song ideas but was looking at this for doing that. Appreciate your vid, thanks
Just noticed that it appears you have a Tascam 24 trck. Can you hook that to your computer so you have endless recording time? I found that using many tracks cuts down your recording time when recording to SD card
Using the overdub feature on the DR-05X was as exiting as getting my first four track. You don't have any mixing functions, but it's so easy to record right off the bat it's worth it (hit record and it asks if it's a new track or you're overdubbing on the previous track. Easy.) Sit it on your lap to record drums, layer a couple guitars & vocals: BAM.
I received my Tascam DR-05x this week. I really like the menu interface. I have a dslr that has a mono mic built in and no mic jack. So I picked up this unit from Amazon. I also plan to use it as an interface for my laptop. So I picked up a manfrotto mini tripod for when I’m at home. . I’m adding a cold shoe mount with shock mount for the top of the dslr. All recordings will have to sync in post when I’m back from what I’m doing. I may make a RUclips video with the unit Great tutorial. Picked up a few tips so thank you for that
Thank you so much for this mate! I’ve been putting aside setting up mine and it’s been months but this video gave me everything I needed! You explained it in a clear and concise manner, especially with the settings, such a good way to educate and inform. You’ve earned a sub! Feel like I’ve found my go to sound help channel now aha! Thanks so much! Exactly what I was looking for, and very well and easily explained. I'm new to audio (but very interested) and content creation, and now I will hit the subscribe button! Looking forward to watching and learning more from your channel!
Heads up for the uninitiated: BUY the power adapter with the recorder. I can not beleive how quickly these go through batteries. And next time can you spend more time talking about the position the equipment should go or set up in a studio? That can really us ameteurs😭
Just purchase one and the setup is easy and recorded a few conga drum tracks. Your video really helped me get started and opened my eyes to many of its capabilities. Not bad for $100 bucks
the dr05x also supports micro SD cards larger than 32GB (max of the original dr05) and a benefit of both is that you can USB power them with a powerbank
Thank you very much for that video ! You explain everything very clearly and understandably. Before I found you I didn't know anything about audio settings. I love your channel :*
Thank you so much for this detailed video it’s even better than the first one without you I wasn’t gonna by the tascam or the movo, but after I saw what you were saying and you really know what you’re talking about I bought both of them ... thank you so much it was the best purchase I’ve made to my RUclips channel 🤝
Very informative. I did have a question about how to label a recording. The instructions don't explain this. Maybe you can cover this in a future tutorial.
Hey I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Tascam DR-07X and if it is worth the extra £30 over the DR-05X. This is such a clear concise tutorial and I will watch it again if I decide to buy the Tascam DR-05X instead.
Ive been using a dr-05 for the past three or four years for all my podcast and recordings, and it is all I need. I haven't seen the ex-model, but I assume it doesn't have that much more... as I said that you just covered it. The sound quality is amazing in these things. It's all you need, I wanted to upgrade but decided it wasn't worth the extra money
I’m looking into this myself for podcasts, performances as well as field recording. I’m on a poverty budget. Do you just use the mic of the tascam or do you plug in an external mic?
Brian, love your channel. I just ordered the DR-05X and waiting for it to arrive. On the difference between WAV and MP3 @2:30, you said, "Wav is to MP3, as Raw files are to JPEGs." Did you mean to say "WAV is to Raw as MP3 is to JPEGs?" I watched your set-up guide for the older DR-05 and you said "WAV=Raw, MP3=JPEG." I know WAV is the better format, but just want to clarify. I had to choose one between this one and the Zoom H1N and I opted for the latter and ordered it online. I still haven't received it yet. Can you please make a tutorial on Zoom H1N also? This tutorial is so good. Makes me buy this one also. Tascam people should at the the very least...make you a Tascam ambassador/representative or any equivalent, if they have. Hi Wahab, thanks so much for watching. I don't own the Zoom H1N, so unfortunately I can't do a tutorial on it. But you'll find very similar settings, I'm sure. Appreciate your comment about Tascam. In fact, just a few months ago we entered into a collaborative agreement. I'll soon be doing a lot of reviews & tutorials on really incredible audio gear that they've sent me, so stay tuned for that! Question: What kind of content do you make? What will you use your audio recorder for?
@@AudioforContentCreators Well...you can check my channel. The actual purpose, why I wanted a voice recorder was to get a better audio, which is kinda crappy (worse than crappy for you) in my 1st few videos, especially the Corona video, because I used the Boya BY-M1 mic and recorded the voice on a free app in the mobile. Then I started plugging it in directly in to the camera and you can see that the sound quality has improved (IMO) in the last 8-10 videos. Another reason why I want a dual mic voice recorder is that I want to make a few videos with my 5 years old son...sitting on a bench in a park with the voice recorder between us...with some life lessons and advice...father to son and vice versa stuff. You can laugh at this idea of course.
Maaaaan, that was amazing review! I'm currently thinking about purchasing audio interface and xlr mic but I think that thanks to your advice I can save some money and invest it into this tiny devil.
@Audio for Content Creators I absolutely love the sound of the instrumental at the end, how did you/they record it ? 😱 Thank you for your videos! Btw, might be great as an idea to have a big comparison of all setups 🙋
Hi from Guatemala, Brian. So I bought this recorder just before coming home. I love it! I just produced a video for my work here and I used this for the audio. I am so excited, it is a game changer!!! I want to give you some info that I found out today. I've been trying to connect through USB to my laptop. (2019 Nov MacBook Pro). It didn't work. Also tried connecting to my iPad Air 3, also didn't work. Everything works perfect on the recorder. I downloaded the manual to be sure I was doing it right. After a few attempts, I read in smaller letters, that you must connect directly into the computer, not through an adaptor (dongle...) - I'm bummed. If I am wrong, and you have other info, could you share it here. I thought maybe the USB wasn't working. As I pressed on I discovered what I just shared with you! Have a wonderful day! -- Susan
Hi Susan! I saw you jumped into the Audio 101 for Content Creators course. Thanks so much for your support! Is there any particular reason you're using an adapter instead of connecting the DR05X directly to the Macbook using a USB cable?
@@AudioforContentCreators Hi Brian. Yes, I’m enjoying the class, learning some new things. - I am using the usb cable plugged into the recorder. The MacBook only has usb-c connections so you have to use a usb-c male to usb female adaptor to connect a usb. I have an adaptor with different ports for different needs (sd cards, usb.. ) it is the only way to connect anything to the laptop. ---I tried my iRig in the microphone jack and it read it as external, I recorded with it in garage band. So it’s not the computer. I also tried the mic output (with the dr-05x) as if connecting directly to camera, didn’t work. I don’t have any way of testing it directly as a usb to usb. Maybe I can borrow a pc from a friend. If it doesn’t work, it might be the recorder. Anyway just wanted to give you the info, I hope this made sense.
@@AudioforContentCreators Hello Brian. Well, looks like the usb doesn’t work in my recorder. I went directly into a usb port on a friends computer and it doesn’t work. It’s ok, I’ll use my SURE SM48 to connect to computer. I can buy an interface here, a little bit more than there. I am really learning a lot in your class! 😊
I have a pair of Slint lav mics that I'm trying to use for dual track/stereo audio for some interviewing, but I've yet to be able to get it to record stereo.
Thank you for the great review! Is using the Tascam's built in mics with the windscreen equal (less or more) in quality than using the VXR10 Pro? I'm wondering if the VXR10 pro would be a good companion for creating podcasts and for vocals and/or instruments? The built it mics sound really good to me, but not an expert. Thank you for any input!
WICKED! Thanks best 13 minutes I have spent watching a helpful video. I have a couple questions in a reader hub that regards to the sd cards and card readers and the 48k vs 96k. 1. Should I reformat old sd cards on the recorder or on the computer? 2.Can you suggest a good reliable multiple reader hub ( I have old sd cards different formats that I want to transfer , so 2birds 1 stone!) 3. How to choose the right mini sd card in terms of speed, format and size? 4. If I am primarily using the audio for video shot on 4k @24fps, which speed should I be using for audio 48k or 96k Thanks in advance !
This is a great explanation. I just bought this product. However, as a performing musician I recorded my first performance last night. When I went to upload the file to my computer the file ended up being many small files, not just one long file of the entire performance. Why would that happen? What am I doing wrong. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Hi Michael did you use the settings he used on this video for recording vocals? I've just bought one and wondering what would be the best settings for recording clean vocals, cheers.
I'm wondering the same thing. I've heard good things about the Purple Panda lav mic for a good budget mic but wonder if there's a better recommendation?
I love this video man, it was extremely informative, granted I have the DR-07x but it's virtually the same set up. What my biggest ask now is what attachment are you using to mount your VXR 10 to the boom @ 11:22 ? Of the 2 booms I have, both mounting screws are much too large to secure the base to.

Thank you very much, great video. It helps me a lot
Thank you for the class...The best yet!
this video equals gold. so much good content. ! thank you
Thanks for taking so much of the anxiety out of working with the right tools.
Cool video!! Have you done a video for Tuscan Dr40x?
Great review, I'll definitely buy one of these
Excellent information. Very well made review and instruction. Thank you.
Excellent video. Answered all my questions. I'll use your link to purchase 👍
🙏
Hey sir! Just recevied the Tascam DR-05X. I there a way to plug it in the camera while recording instead of having to sync audio with video in post?
Thank you sir for explanation.
Great video, very helpful. You need way more subs!
Thanks for the quick start setup guide. Can you make a similar one for the Zoom H1n?
Hi Shinil! I don't own a Zoom H1n, but the settings should be nearly identical.
This video are awesome and very informative. Thank you.
Amazing video! I'm waiting for my DR-05X! Just a quick question, what kind of microSD card should I use? Thanks!
Awesome! Thanks. Needed that info.
Thank you so much for this informative video. I just bought the same device it was really helpful.
WICKED! Thanks best 13 minutes I have spent watching a helpful video. I have a couple questions in a reader hub that regards to the sd cards and card readers and the 48k vs 96k.
1. Should I reformat old sd cards on the recorder or on the computer?
2.Can you suggest a good reliable multiple reader hub ( I have old sd cards different formats that I want to transfer , so 2birds 1 stone!)
3. How to choose the right mini sd card in terms of speed, format and size?
4. If I am primarily using the audio for video shot on 4k @24fps, which speed should I be using for audio 48k or 96k
Thanks in advance !
How do you correct a recording, i.e go back and over record the mistake?
Great tutorial.
Awesome video bro, keep up the good work. Any recommendations for the best quality lav mic I can connect to this device?
I'm wondering the same thing. I've heard good things about the Purple Panda lav mic for a good budget mic but wonder if there's a better recommendation?
This is really helpful, thank you!
You made this so easy for me to set up Thank you so much.
Nice video !
Would you say the Tascam DR-05X is a good option to start interviewing people ?
Great stuff! Thanks a million!
Nice video, I'm also going to purchase the dr05x for my video voiceovers. Mic Input jack is mono or stereo?
Stereo 3.5mm TRS.
I still have my DR-05 which I use alot. The only negative is the battery door retaining guides wear out causing a loose battery door that falls off
THANK YOU HELPED ME A LOT !!
Great set up video, thanks.
Thank you it helps a lots !!!
This is great - thanks
Will add that to my list.
