Great tutorial Sara. After reading the manual today, I felt a little overwhelmed with all the settings. Thanks for going over the basics, and presenting in a simple to understand concept. And of the three tutorials I've watched, you have the best presentation. Thanks..
Thanks for the video, Sara. I just received my DR-40 a few minutes ago and didn't really want to read the manual on how to use it so I resorted to RUclips. Your video was the first one that came up. It really helped me to get started with my new purchase. Cheers!!!
i've had mine for 2 years and finally looked up a tutorial. can't figure out how to overdub and how to format/use external sd. here's hoping this helps!
I just watch your newest video where i see the tascam in your bag, then I searched it and clicked to the first video that poped up and It's yours too :D
This very helpful for getting started, thank you!! It's also really cool to see more women interested and involved in video/soundwork. Can't wait to see more! :)
Hey Sara, nice work. The DR-40 is a cool machine and I've used it for a couple years, but your video showed me a couple things I didn't know. Thank you :)
Holy crap, plain easy to use instructions, right to the point no extra stuff exactly what I need. I am a player not a button pusher I can’t stand that side of things, thanks for the plain English instructions
So I just subbed (and started watching your videos regularly) a couple weeks ago, but then when I found this I realized that I watched this video almost 2 years ago before buying my DR-40. It's funny how things like that can happen on youtube. :)
Sara, I really enjoyed watching this video and seeing your growth. Much props to you for continuing to produce videos and now getting in a good podcasting groove.
Thanks for your help. Just got mine and your mini tutorial was most helpful to get me going....so much easier than ploughing through the very detailed manual........thanks again and best wishes from the UK.
Glad I watched it because every one I've seen for sale is called DR-40 4-track which could also mean 4 independent tracks layered over one another. Nice informative video, thanks.
Want to use this for recording back round tracks And using them for playing gigs. Is there a continues play button Where you don't have to hit the play button after each song ?
Great video! What settings are you using and how do you have yours attached to your 70D? I have a 70D and this exact mic but cannot seem to get noise free audio. Do you have it attached directly to the camera or as a stand alone recorder and then laying down the audio using plural eyes or something like that? Thank you!
So once you hit stop it creates another new track automatically? I have a Tascam that you have to go in and manually create a new track every time. It is too time consuming so I am looking for something a little more on the go.
Man... I just got the portacapture X6 yesterday and have been real close to taking my 12 gauge to it, all 8 shots, too. That's stupid that you have to hit record 2 times to get it to actually record. I'll admit, I kinda half-ass skimmed through the directions. But that had yet to fail me until yesterday and today. I guess I will givve it a go now that I watched this video you made. I'll let you know how it goes LOL
Great video.. Do you know if I could plug the back of this into a phone instead of a dslr by any chance? That way I could use phone to record and still have good quality audio.
Wow this is a Radio 4 quality in your pocket. Really good easy to follow review. My question is i have the Dr-07 mk II so i wondering if one is better than the other? Am not as familiar with the different kinds of mics so am very curious ? I love sound and i love the fact i can plug in Binaural mics meaning the mics are in my ears not a dummy head. But thanks for your video very enjoyable…
Hey I came across your video I like it a lot. I just got mine today am using it for film making. What settings far as db control do you recommend for when the mic is in play?
I just purchased the Tascam DR-40 with footswitch to control play back audio. How can i control the playback audio speed. like slow or fast? Please guide me step by step
When I bought this I thought I'd be able to record and then play back what I'd done and listen to quality, volume, etc. Unfortunately there is no speaker, so you have to output this device to a mixer or some amp with speakers to listen to what you've done. Wished you'd have covered this part of the end use of this product. Great job however getting things going in a clear concise manner.
i want to know about limiter function, what dose it work for? what's difference between limiter on and off? i'm using tascam DR 40, i was spoiled my ourdoor live concert recording , the sound was distorted especially base drum part except other parts were very clear, setting was dual rec, dual LVL i don't know this how to set it up, dual LVL is raging from 0- -12db, should i do off or setting at -12db,
If I record a piece and I want to add a second instruments or vocals how do I do that so I can hear the original piece and add to it. Sara if you help me I will be eternally grateful.
Awesome Video, thanks for posting. Could you tell me the best audio settings you use for both Canon 70D and audio on Tascam to have them sync correctly. I'll be filming a musical and considering purchasing the Tascam DR-40 to replace the audio of my Canon 5D Mark III and Canon HF G20 for better audio sound.
Thank you so much. I am gonna record my first solo album using the Tascam40. No computers just the unit and my songs. I imagine your view count will go up about 20 times or more with me coming back time and time again. Thanks again. .
Yo guys. What is the best recording mode for recording a 1 on 1 podcast with 2 external XLR mics? I did “stereo” with “MS decode” turned “on” and it doesn’t sound good!!! I need help.
Thanks for the tutorial; you did a good job of introduction for newbies like me. Another newbie thing how do you make the dr-40 set levels automatically? I can't find it in the menus. Perhaps others here may know this answer as it's driving me crazy--autolevels helps a lot when recording yourself :).
since the Tascam audio is better than the 70d, do you connect it to the camera when you make your other vids our do you use a different Mic setup for Dslr sound?
+Anthony Childs IMO you should record audio separate on your tascam - you can even hook up a shot gun and use a bom pole. Also record direct to cam via the mic on the 70d. Then sync in post.
PLEASE HELP: I record audio with a Tascam Dr-40 and edit it in Adobe Premiere. One some other sound software, the sound is clear but there's no waveform. If I pretend it's not and issue and upload it on RUclips for example, the sound plays fine on a computer or stereo, but there's no sound or some muffled crackling noise when played on an iphone/iPad, but sometimes it plays with good headphones. Can someone PLEASE explain this problem and how to fix it?
Hello. I am having a problem with my DR-40. In normal Int Mic mode I understand the blinking red light right side is the 2 second buffer ready to record button. Then you push down on it again to get the solid red and it starts recording to file then when you are done recording you push the home button left side to stop recording and close that audio clip down. That's great except when I am recording and there is a few seconds of silence it stops recording. Is there a way to make it record continuously? I am recording to a live performance and we have periods of silence and not having that on the track makes it difficult to match the person speaking to the right section of the Tascam files. I have like 30 sound clips for a 5 minute act. What is the setting for non-stop recording? Thanks, Bill
My answer is: I called Tascam and a live person answered. He said we should not use the "Auto-Record" setting for our purposes which was recording a live theatre performance. So be careful of that function.
I have a question if anyone can help. How do I record with the ext in and the int mics simultaneously and control each of their input levels separately? Thanks!
I am looking to invest in an audio recorder for shooting my dslr films. I already own the Rode VideoMic but it is not enough for good sound. Is the tascam dr40 good for that?I've also seen the zoom and i am a little lost. I am in the budget of around 150 dollars. Any suggestions??? Thank you!
I love the dr40 and it basically does what the zoom does but for cheaper. If you do interview type stuff maybe a dr08 with a cheap lav mic would be a better option. Depends what you're doing!
The DR-40 is not exactly a 4 track recorder in the multitrack sense. It is actually a two stereo tracks recorder, for a total of 4 channels, with an overdub mode. The overdub mode can be set to “mix” or “separate”. What this all means is that you can record your rhythm track with either the onboard mics or with external mics, then overdub additional tracks. If you use the “mix” mode, you will create a new stereo track with both the rhythm track and the new track mixed together. If you use the “separate” mode, you will still hear the original rhythm track during recording of the new part, but the new part will be created as a file with just that content. In both cases, you still retain the original rhythm track. The “mix” mode allows you to build a composition one track at a time with an infinite number of tracks. You just lose the ability to edit any of the previously recorded parts. With the “separate” mode, you will end up with a track for each part of your composition. To assemble it all you will need to download your files to a computer and work with them in a digital audio application. This gives you more flexibility versus less convenience. The 4 track recorder that you are thinking of is more like the Portastudio which is more oriented to recording a fixed number of mono or stereo tracks that you can work with directly on the recorder. The Tascam DP-008ex or DP-006 are more amenable to that type of applications than the DR-40.
Great tutorial Sara. After reading the manual today, I felt a little overwhelmed with all the settings. Thanks for going over the basics, and presenting in a simple to understand concept. And of the three tutorials I've watched, you have the best presentation. Thanks..
+beaker street glad i could help!!

Finally a simple review i can understand that's to the point. Thank you!
Agreed.
I had this mic for a while and could never get it straight. Now, thanks to you all the basic functions are clear. Thanks!
I just watch your newest video where i see the tascam in your bag, then I searched it and clicked to the first video that poped up and It's yours too :D
+Carnor Have always been hustling :)
THANKS SO MUCH!! May be an old video but, I needed a refresher on the DR40 so thanks a ton!!
This very helpful for getting started, thank you!! It's also really cool to see more women interested and involved in video/soundwork. Can't wait to see more! :)
Thanks for the friendly and simple tutorial! So much more accessible than the manual.
Hey Sara, nice work. The DR-40 is a cool machine and I've used it for a couple years, but your video showed me a couple things I didn't know. Thank you :)
Love seeing a 10-year-old video and checking the channel for what's recent. Congrats on what seems to be success 😊 and thank you for the Tascam info!
Thanks for the rundown. Good, basic info. Been forever since I used my Tascam and needed a quick refresher.
Nice overview! We use the Tascam DR-40 on our show and out on the field doing remote. Keep up the Great work!
Holy crap, plain easy to use instructions, right to the point no extra stuff exactly what I need. I am a player not a button pusher I can’t stand that side of things, thanks for the plain English instructions
Thank you for the great video! Answered any questions I had about getting started with my new DR40.
Very well done...ive had mine for two years and love it. Thankyou for your post
Thanks for the awesome tutorial! I just picked up the DR-40, and i'll be using it for my videos and interviews! Keeping rocking your guitar!
Just gettin ready to begin…Thank Ya Sara. For keeping it simple.
I just got one of these for Christmas. I plan to use it from now on for my podcast. Thank you for the quick run through.
That was by far the best tutorial on the DR-40 I've heard. And I've heard several recently. Perfect. Thanks!
Sara, FANTASTIC tutorial. Much appreciated!! I thought my new Tascam was broken, but apparently I had no clue had to use it. Thanks very, very much!!

Cheers! I was being overwhelmed by the manual. This was simple and great to get started!
Thanks for the great overview, very helpful and to the point. :)
Nice video Sara your video helped me get started with my DR 40 thanks a bunch for sharing. ☺
Thank you! I have had one for years but never took the time to look into using it. This helped me get there!
Sara, this was incredibly helpful, thank you!
Very Helpful Video. Thank you so much. Short, clear and too the point!
Thank you Sara!
Very helpful with mine for quick fun right away!
Thanks! Very straight forward and easy to understand.
thanks for this basic tutorial. got the info i needed to get started playing with this little guy.
Thank you for sharing. Very basic and easy to follow tutorial. Keep up the great work.
very useful tutorial. thanks Sara

So where do u place this unit if no XLR mics are connected? or should you only use the wired connections?
Awesome video Sara. Thank you. This helped a lot! I Just got my tascam d-40 :)
An excellent run-through, thanks so much!
Great video.. Do you know if I could plug the back of this into a phone instead of a dslr by any chance? That way I could use phone to record and still have good quality audio.
Thanks for the demo. If u go to the settings u can change the backlight to not shut off every 5 seconds.
Hey thanks for the vid! I was wondering - do you record the audio from the dr40 directly onto your dslr? or do you add it in post?
Wow this is a Radio 4 quality in your pocket. Really good easy to follow review. My question is i have the Dr-07 mk II so i wondering if one is better than the other? Very consise tutorial. I learned exactly what I needed to learn. Thanks!
thanks for the tutorial. wouldn't you want to record at 48 kHz instead of 44.1 for video?
Hey I came across your video I like it a lot. I just got mine today am using it for film making. What settings far as db control do you recommend for when the mic is in play?

Was looking for a tascam video and found a pre peachy Sara Dietchy video
thank you for this tutorial, it's just what I was looking for!
Helpful! Thanks! I also use the 7D.. Good setup
Hey Sara, any thoughts on the H5 Zoom vs the DR-40?
If I record a piece and I want to add a second instruments or vocals how do I do that so I can hear the original piece and add to it. Sara if you help me I will be eternally grateful.
is it made in China, for the original one?
Hey, great tutorial! I was about to buy this one but some reviewers say that it makes a helicopter sound sometimes, has that happened to you?
Awesome Video, thanks for posting. Could you tell me the best audio settings you use for both Canon 70D and audio on Tascam to have them sync correctly. I'll be filming a musical and considering purchasing the Tascam DR-40 to replace the audio of my Canon 5D Mark III and Canon HF G20 for better audio sound.
You have to sync the audio in post so maybe a rode video mic pro would be a better option since the audio records straight to the camera.
do you do any audio editing in post? if so what do you us use?
Thank you so much. I am gonna record my first solo album using the Tascam40. No computers just the unit and my songs. I imagine your view count will go up about 20 times or more with me coming back time and time again. Thanks again. .
How many xlr mics can be plugged into this device?
I need a recorder that can take at least four xlrs.
can you record straight to a laptop/desktop into studio software etc. Sonar, Audacity.
Great video. Do you have any tutorials for multi-track recording?
amazing tutorial!! thanks sara!
Great, thank you so much! Are you pleased with the tascam 40 internal mics?
+Mikkel Anton Haarstad ya they are great when the mics are close to the subject but other than that I am always plugging in some type of external mic
Yo guys. What is the best recording mode for recording a 1 on 1 podcast with 2 external XLR mics? I did “stereo” with “MS decode” turned “on” and it doesn’t sound good!!! I need help.
Can one suggest a Waves Plugin that could eliminate all the air? I'll be using a sure mic for some on location interviews
Thanks for the tutorial; you did a good job of introduction for newbies like me. Another newbie thing how do you make the dr-40 set levels automatically? I can't find it in the menus. Can you overdub on the Dr-40 like the Zoom H4n ??
Thanks for the video.

EXCELLENT TUTORIAL . I HAVE THE BIG TASCAM RECORDER AND I AM COMPLETELY LOST. WHEN I BUY THE MODEL YOU HAVE I WILL BE GOOD TO GO. THANKS.
Thank you beautiful woman! I got mine today and I cant wait to use it in the field:)

How to get the sound under the video
very surpried to see a high quality content creator with almost no views
+wowqow feel free to sharreeee :) :) thanks for watching!
+Sara Dietschy this is my other account. This video is the reason why i am getting a DR-40 for a great sci fi movie im gonna make.
Extremely helpful. Thank you!!
Very nice video! This helped me a lot!
Thanks!
Do you know if the DR-40 can be used as a straight recording microphone (to plug into another recording device)?
コレクタースクイーズ Never saw any clear evidence of it. I may try anyway.
Very helpful, thank you from Santiago of Chile
Super helpful video, thank you :)
Is there an automatic voice turn on to record then when there is no sound it stops?
Thank you. by the way I still used my 70D ..great video
I have a question if anyone can help. How do I record with the ext in and the int mics simultaneously and control each of their input levels separately? Thanks!

So its a 4 track right? Does that mean i can say do a rythm track then play back and record another track up to 4 times. Is that right?

Thanks for the quick demo as opposed to just talking about the hardware. Not quite what I'm looking for but close.
Does the input level, change the recording level of the external in also? My line in recording distorted
I have a new mic (HTDZ HT-81), a new recorder (Tascam Dr-40) and I'm using a brand new mic cord. But i am getting hums and hisses. Someone please help
Wil these instructions work for the DR44 aswell?
Nicely Done Sara!
How do you play what you just recorded on the device?
