From what I understand, at the time this was going on a lot of people had little respect for this Dolphins team. Because they “were the AFL.” Now it sounds ridiculous but in the early 1970s a lot of the NFL community saw it that way.
Along with the 2007 Patriots, the 1934 and 1942 Bears had perfect 12-0 regular seasons but the 1934 team lost to the Giants and the 1942 team lost to Washington in the NFL title games respectively. If the 1972 Dolphins weren't the most talented team ever they surely were the most disciplined thanks to Shula.

@@EmbraceTheStruggle24 I agree with that, and we’ve seen some awesome football, but I believe the best teams I ever saw were the late 80s Niners, and the 85 Bears. The Brady Pats were pretty imposing too
They were the only unbeaten team, but I am not sure that they were the "best team in NFL history". In this era, defending conference champions, as the dolphins were that year, did not get a more difficult than average schedule for the next year as happens now. In fact, the dolphins did not play anyone in the regular season who made the playoffs. In the playoffs, the dolphins won the wild card game and then played the Steelers in the conference championship. Steeler QB Terry Bradshaw had the flu as I remember and was unable to play the entire game. The dolphins did beat a very good redskins team in the Super Bowl.
The diversity they over came with a back up QB and the fact they had to play at Pittsburgh for the AFC championship, even though they had the best record. Remember three years in a row the dolphins went to the superbowl.
The players drink a glass of champagne at the point in the year when the last undefeated team loses. So much for the attitude of "all records are made to be broken" and wishing good luck to the new guys. And the year the Patriots went undefeated to the Super Bowl, the ex-Dolphins acted like big babies until the last minute.
Most people think that the 1972 miami dolphins were a fluke, stop and think about this for a moment, the very next year they only lost 2 games, Raiders and colts. But remember they played those 2 teams twice that year, beating the colts 44-0, and by the way that was thier 4th consective shutout over the colts. They also beat the raiders 27-10 in the 1973 afc championship game. Now, when people claim (sports media) that the dolphins could not beat teams of today, ask yourself this question, what rules would the game be played under? Yesteryear or todays rules? Either way the dolphins would have the advantage. Just one mans opinion.
How could they lose with that offensive blocking. Anyone's grandmother could have rushed for 100 yards a game with those linemen. And the defense was lights out. Running game sets up the passing game. You don't lose very many football games with that. They were a threat to score from anywhere.
Just remember they only played 1 game during the regular season against a team with a winning record and that team was the 8 and 6 Giants. There division was awful like the Patriots had most of Tom Brady's career.
The Bears almost had a perfect season. They lost one game, and ironically I think the shadow cast by Don Shula was Ditka's undoing. I think Shula was in Ditka's head. The Dolphins were not as good as the Bears that year. If Ditka played Bears football, he beats the Dolphins. But he was too clever by half. Shula out coached him that night.
@@mactherealestateman I only say it because I’m a Chicagoan. I remember one of the first plays was a quick pass to the sideline WR, who took a step back to receive the pass at the snap. I said out loud, “what the hell is Ditka doing?” I had the impression he was afraid of Shula.

How embarrassing the '07 Patriots and the '15 Kentucky Wildcats couldn't finish the job. Speaking of the later, did you know since Indiana in 1976 ran the table, no men's D1 b-ball team that has entered the tournament with zero or one loss has been able to win the big gold trophy.
