While I have 4 bmws I'm a disabled veteran with hardware in my neck, lumbar & fixing to have both knees replaced. Needless to say I can't do these kind of repairs anymore it gives me great joy to see a professional do this repair. Awesome job and I really enjoyed seeing you clean all your components while your mechanicing is truly enjoyable ( I'm OCD). This is my favorite channel now and I can't wait to see your channel grow and get some sponsorship. Awesome job DIY as always.

Dear Chris, Kudos from European BMW E46/E39/E38 Community.
    Good Work!
Congrats that you did not resign.
I did a E39 530i A with M54B30 Engine replacement last year and remember a lot of your work,
eg the fu w the transmission-to-engine-to-starter assembling. ✊
A combustion engine is only as good as maintained fluids cycles.
So I learned to replace all different fluids, pipes and seals frequently…
Tough job to complete all lying on your back.
The cooler pipe O-Rings are silicon rings, also fitting for the servo steering.
I always buy and supply oem ones in sufficient numbers…
My transmission shifter was complete rusty and i had a follow up session at a original ZF shop to replace.
    Now everything works well…
As i can recognize your bmw is in a good condition, e.g. exhaust pipes.
Thanks for sharing! Enjoy driving your E46 👏👏👏

Normally I watch for the great camera angles on work I've never done & may never do, but I have worked on these cars in the past so I find it really educational. That was so full of good info! You may have solved my whoosh issue after I shut down my engine!? The trans line drain, the drive train tips... I'll be researching this many times. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge out here. You've encouraged me to buy floor jack and scanner and try and fix my hard shift and p0171-174 issues and dig up on 2 more small things. I've got a really clean e46 to refresh so you've been hitting on things I need to know. Keep refreshing e46's all the M. and 330 versions are about trashed by now so it's time for the base model 325i. I've got only 89k and a hard shift to figure out. You're a good man, fixing and taking good care of the old car before selling it to make sure the next owner will have a reliable car.
No need to remove the whole driveshaft: just lower the center support bearing off the studs, then slide the front half into the splines of the rear half shaft and this should let the front flange off the tranny output flange long pilot pin. Use string to hold up and support the rear half to prevent damaging the rear CV joint.
At 11:17 we can see the Stop Buffer rubber on the cross member, just to the right of the yellow sticker, between the oil pan and the cross member. The top of the buffer is a piece of hard plastic that the lowered oil pan bottom on, preventing the tranny/engine to tilt back further. So removing this buffer will let the tranny lower down more to gain acess to the tranny top right bolt easier.
    Best of luck.

    • @DayOffDIY
      @DayOffDIY  Год назад

i pulled it on this one to replace the center support bearing, would be tough to get leverage and do the replacement with the driveshaft on the car, however i usually just bungee cord them to the sides.

One quick tip I learned on the fan blade. if you start the engine and just hold the fan up to the water pump it'll catch itself and won't start turning until you let go of the fan. So much easier.

Whoa, an hour long video! Giving us all some solid content, this sets a new bar now. Great job fixing the torque converter and well worth it as you now know you won't be selling the car with any mechanical issues. Feedback on other video content, definitely, I'm about to pull some more rotted fence posts this weekend and instead of digging them out I'll be using the car jack method you used. For suggested content, get a neglected Mini with a manual gearbox. Still a Beemer and you can do some tasteful performance enhancements. Would love to see HVAC work and an automatic transmission rebuild on your channel. Instead of using a Sharpie to record maintenance get some waterproof sticker printer paper and make a cool maintenance sticker with your logo. You can make oil change reminders too. Time for a MaxJax or QuickJack instead of sketchy jackstands. Last week I bought the smoke machine you had on your channel. I liked the fact, as you pointed out, they are an American company. Onward and upward!

This video helped me a ton and not for the reason you may think. I have an E46 that was my first car, I ran it up to 225k miles and parked it, the engine is tired and while it may be controversial, I'm planning on doing an EV swap. I've always wanted to do it and it will bring new life to my first car. I needed to know how tall the transmission was in the car before I pull it out and your small remark on the height it took to remove it helped me. Thank you!

Great job! Overall super content and very good video coverage and discussion of the challenges. I'm removing the transmission from my son's 2008 E60 528i, in order to replace the rear main crankshaft seal, so am facing many similar challenges.
I applaud you for your caution when jacking the car so high, and especially for going in steps to get the car down. When one set of jacks is higher than the other, forces are generated that want to make the car "slide" towards the lower end, which can trigger a very bad day. So "stair-stepping" like that is the way to go.
One recommendation that I think you and other will like are to purchase some jack adaptors from Forsvara for the BMW. I don't work for them, and don't make anything off their sales, as I'm an Engineer in the electrical power generation industry; but their adapters will increase your safety factor considerably. The way you used the standard jack stand shoe on the BMW lift points could encourage an issue, whereas the Forsvara adapters bolt to the jack stand saddle, and have the rectangular block on top that will fit "into" the BMW lift points.
Keep up the good work, and I hope your channel grows significantly!

awesome work on that tasty E46! man, I wish I could buy it.
question - if you don't feel any binding or grinding while the sunroof is moving, have you tried just resetting it? I had that same type of issue on my Benz (sunroof would only move about 2 inches at a time and stop), and resetting it fixed the issue.
on BMWs I think the process is, with key in ACC position, push in the button to tilt up the sunroof and keep holding the button in for 20 or 30 seconds until you see the sunroof move slightly up & back down, then it's reset. maybe worth a try?

GREAT video, enjoyed watching it (11 months later). I'm pretty sure it sold by now, LOL. I do own a 2004 325CI, with a limp mode issue. Any recommendations on how to repair?
