    Thank you so much for actually showing the removal of visible cuticles/dead skin! I've watched so many videos where people who already have perfect cuticles demonstrate how to use cuticle removers and then they always say DON'T CUT YOUR SKIN, and that doesn't help me at all, because I have a lot of "flappy" skin after pushing back my cuticles, just like yours, and I never knew how to safely remove that because every other video just says don't cut it, but it looks so bad if I don't.

    • @kimwold
      @kimwold 2 года назад +15

      exactly my case, I still don't wanna cut them, I read you can let fungi and other bacteria in if you do but they look so ugly, don't know what to do

    • @abetweene
      @abetweene  2 года назад +60

      doctors caution against cutting cuticles because you could accidentally cut living skin creating a bleeding wound. That wound is what would then potentially let in harmful bacteria, which is why we wear bandages and/or our body creates a scab as a shield to keep them out.

    • @jellybeansi
      @jellybeansi Год назад +3

      @@abetweene The cuticle is not living skin, though. The cuticle is the paper-thin dead skin that grows slowly over the nail, the stuff that can be scraped off. The proximal nail fold is the living skin that can bleed, which can become thick over time and also start to stretch over the nail. This is a super common misconception.

    • @abetweene
      @abetweene  Год назад +19

      yes. my statement encompasses the ability when holding sharp instruments to slip & unintentionally cut ANY surrounding skin including the proximal and lateral folds. when cutting the cuticle (though dead) youre still in close proximity to living tissue. physicans recommend pushing back because theyd rather you not take the risk.

    You shouldn't cut your cuticles because it protects both your nails and the skin surrounding them from infection. After cutting the cuticle, it's easier for bacteria and germs to get inside. It's more advisable to push them back rather than cutting them.

    I don't think I have much cuticle. I've always try to find mine to cut off, since that's what all manicurist on have advised to do, but I always had trouble finding it. I would very quickly cut into skin that had feeling in it. Based on your description of translucency, I don't think I have much cuticle.

      I have the same nail type. on the lateral side of my nail bed, they do get dry and I bite it sometimes lol. Keeping the nail edges moist helps so much to keep it intact. I don't have to push back or cut my cuticles really but I do notice it on my husband's big toenail.

      If you don't have, don't touch. Same here and I don't do anything to them :) Also they say, the more you cut them the more they will grow so you'll have to always care for them. Cuticles are there to protect the skin from infections so unless you need to touch them and you're very expert, better not mess with them.

    I never visit nail saloons because they are expensive AF and where I live at least, they do really bad job. And I love the look of manicured hands; I feel incomplete without my manicure XD

    Amazing! This just answered my question as to why my gel nails keep lifting from the bottom... tissue!. I've got some kit coming today, I don't have any cuticle remover/oil. Can I use soapy water followed by olive oil/cream?

    How would you cut them into french manicure nails with basic tools?

    • @abetweene
      @abetweene  3 года назад

      a french manicure can be done on any shape. are you asking how to cut them square? In that case, Id use nail clippers to trim across, then use a 240 grit file to straighten the edge and side walls to a 90° angle

    • @alphafish4756
      @alphafish4756 3 года назад

      abetweene I have curved clippers so that will work?

    • @abetweene
      @abetweene  3 года назад +1

      yes, just trim them longer than you actually want them. then as you file and refine the shape they’ll become shorter.

    Hey! thanks for the super informative video. I find that after I do a manicure everything looks great but a few days later my cuticles are looking dry and splinter-y like. Im not sure if that makes sense but the surface doesn't look smooth anymore. Any idea why that happens? Could you do a video on that please? Also I get a lot of hangnails on the skin around the nail (the actual skin, not the cuticle). Cheers, I love all your videos!

    • @abetweene
      @abetweene  4 года назад +2

      nippers could be jagged or technique may just be “choppy”
      try cutting a smooth continuous strip and keeping your nails oiled as often as possible.

      I've never cut mine (myself) before bcs their really short so im scared to cut my skin and when I went to the salon, they ended up cutting my skin and told me my cuticles were very short- so i just dont do anything. Tbh, they look like her nails from after she cut the cuticles

      I do because when I don’t and they overgrow I get a lot of hangnails that really hurt and bleed. For the longest time (since childhood) I always wondered why I would get so many and for me, cuticles were the answer

    Hello, thank you so much for all your tips!!
    You have beautiful nails and such a lovely voice 😍
    Question: starting out on the nail growth journey is it more important to get shape or length?
    I lost length trying to get the right shape and now they are starting to grow nicely, but I got a split…😣
    Thank you 🥰💖💖

    • @abetweene
      @abetweene  2 года назад +1

      thats all personal preference. If you’d prefer shape, be mindful of the way and what tools you use to file your nails. High grit files can shred the layers of the nail causing more peeling and splits. If youre doing your best but still have issues, you could try wearing an overlay of acrylic, gel, or polygel for added strength and security.

    This is so helpful! I've tried so many salons and they always cut my cuticles too far and make them bleed. I'll try this at home. Kinda gross to watch the skin peel up/to see it (not just on you specifically, just in general)....but I can't stop watching! Hahahaha. Great video, will watch more/subscribe to your channel!
