it feels weird having bernie and cybershell have a semi-frequent upload schedule. are you okay, guys? blink twice if you're being held hostage.
Better yet, upload twice. Then we'll really know if there's a problem.
This is funny as hell but I just know if they read this comment they would be seething in anger.
Thanks for jinxing it.
@@AmyNumberSeven sorry
A Usenet deep dive would be cool in general.
You can read Jeff Gerstmann's childhood flame wars and really early impressions of cultural touchstones, like the first English language reactions to Evangelion from 1995 years before it broadcast outside of Japan. It's also cool to see peoples' reactions to Twin Peaks and X-Files in essentially real time.
It's really fascinating stuff and the frontend that google built makes it pretty easy to search.
I've also heard there is documentation that Fans had developed the theory of Jon Snow being the son of Lyanna and Rygar off the first book alone.
I'm curious, since that's very interesting, would you happen to know anything else in particular about Usenet? I can't seem to really find much.
@@Kuudere-Kun the earliest mention I can find of L+R=J is from early 2002, posted by a guy named Sean Baldwin but that's not to say people weren't discussing it before that.
@@catercu1 a youtuber named Dan Wood has a good video about it showing how it was in 1987, the easiest way is to use google groups, there is an extensive archive of usenet postings there
@@Kuudere-Kun Too bad they couldn't figure out Martin was a hack and his books and all products stemming from them would be garbage from the first book alone, don't know why because it wasn't hard.
Even without planning; you guys manage to produce excellent podcasts. I’ve seen people with extensive planning do far worse.
yeah
I think a Netlore episode about The Simpsons Archive would be cool. I was browsing through it while listening to this one to keep my mind in a happy place, and it doesn’t only have great nitpicky reviews of classic episodes, but a lot of fascinating lists and production trivia. The kind of stuff that seemed pedantic to post about in the 90s, but is now worth knowing and accessing for its historic context to Simpsons fandom, and online fandom in general.
Yuck what a terrible idea
@@Vulpas I mean, it does provide an excellent counterargument for anyone who goes "oh, everyone only likes the first couple of seasons" as people were extremely harsh back then on Usenet forums about the episodes as they were coming out in the 1990s.
Only a bit related but it's sad to think how much information and internet drama was lost when AOL deleted all their message boards. I'm glad Usenet archives still exist, but niche conversations felt a lot more common on AOL at the time compared to Usenet. As an example, the discovery of MissingNo. happened there and then spread outward. So much internet culture for mid-to-late 90s has been completely lost.
People don't care. Most boomers and even many gen-X'ers to some extent under appreciate and even de-value internet culture.
The thing is (and this is where I put my tinfoil hat on), the corporate assholes and uberrich billionaires are the ones pushing that narrative.
The internet isn't easy to manipulate or censor (and they've been trying to for decades), so it is a threat to their control.
These literal psychopaths are bored with their enormous wealth, so the only self-actualization they have left is to "leave their mark" on the world to feel powerful and relevant.
another excellent episode of the Horrific Crimes Podcast
i love you lute, please marry me!!!
I like your videos
I just had all of my wisdom teeth removed and feel so dreary, thank you guys for uploading so I don't have to feel as lonely. I genuinely appreciate this series, Cybershell and Bernie for all you put into this.
here for you man.
@@jesselochner412 Thank you so much for saying that, I mean it. :)
God, i had two of them removed half a month ago, i hope yours have erupted before the removal, because mine weren’t and I lived exclusively on ibuprofen and instant oatmeal for a week
I would love a video on the history of Usenet and Web 1.0. I got into the Internet back in the mid 2000s and know a lot about everything from 2000 forward but there's a whole two decades of Internet history that I'm only armed with a cursory amount of knowledge on and I think you guys would do a good job remedying that.
this is one step closer to an episode on Bin Laden's computer which apparently had pirated anime and Nintendo DS roms on it.
So another point that I think further disprove the rumor: The actual tone of some of the supposed Dahmer posts doesn't really match the profile of what Dahmer was like as a person, at least as far as I understand it. Now I'm not a Dahmer expert, but the performative homophobia of the first dahmer.txt post stood out to me as I have never really seen any sources that paint Dahmer as expressing those kind of homophobic views, in fact he had publicly admitted to being gay several times prior to his arrest (Most notably referring to himself as such during his 1982 trial for indecent exposure). While Dahmer had a complicated relationship with his own sexuality, I've never heard of him adopting that kind of performative homophobia before and it seems much more like what a hoaxer would assume Dahmer to be like shortly after his arrest (Based on the whole "self-hating homophobe" stereotype that was popular at the time).
Fun fact, though: Some quick research online suggests Dahmer actually did have a computer and some books on DOS in his apartment at the time of his arrest. His father actually makes reference to Dahmer owning one circa 1989 or so in his book. There wasn't a proper source associated with it, but a poster on Reddit suggested that Dahmer lost interest in it shortly after picking up the machine and books.
I love how varied the topics can get while still falling well within the Netlore lane. Great work guys!
Also, thanks for showing off all the art!!
you guys should both get pdfs of the book “Everything I Need I Get From You: How Fangirls Created the Internet”, which has really concise explanations of the fan interaction/regular ppl ratios of usenet/ARPAnet and the original USC email chains!! super helpful
Definitely do more episodes on weird Usenet mysteries/lore! I remember looking around the Google archives in the 2000s in college and feeling a weird nostalgia for such an experimental internet I didn't quite get to experience.
Kids, lemme tell ya - you could fake your email address. There was very little validation. USENET was basically like a big game of reply-all where any host was just a relay copy which would send on their own replies. This was before the Internet required you to upload your ID to prove who you were. If you knew how to get around, you could send anything as anyone.
You need to dive back through the trust of the 90s. You used to be able to try to login any server you wanted, and there was little protection against it. You used to be able to ask a server what users were logged into it, and it'd give you a list of usernames and possibly what they claimed to be doing.
It was a completely different era.
Naive, but hopeful. And then capitalism got its grubby hands on it with ads, corrupt politicians and brainwashing narratives to push.
With Reddit dying, maybe we'll see a resurgence in the forums of old. I remember certain sites being a haven for that in the early to mid 2010's. God I feel old saying that.
I love the fanart segments personally, seeing how folks interpret your characters is really interesting imo
even if it isnt a weekly thing, having a podcast episode drop occassionally will always be a treat. thanks lads.
Stories about the old internet before web2 and early web2 is really interesting and fascinating to learn, also the fact that people back in the day were also doin research on conspiracy bs just shows people on the internet back then aren't so different from today. Great episode guys, I hope you guys do more on stuff like this!
this is my fav podcast atm I hope yall know that, between the niche internet culture and cybershell being cybershell it slaps
34:36 🐬 thank you for including my fan art! seeing it be the first in its little section after the talking bit was a fun surprise! -- i loved this episode! ! i cant believe i missed it for 3 days lol!
The chances of there being a serial killer in the comments of this video are low, but never 0.
Praise be the Netlore streak continuing!
The email address is actually very plausible. Back then there wasnt a lot of email providers or even internet providers. The people who did have their own internet would typically use their ISP issued email but many got a free email address from a local school or library, along with usenet server access.
It’s always hype to see these episodes! It’s like seeing two chill dudes just being chill
It's not unheard of for universities of the time to allow anyone to have their email hosted through their server. Considering that Jeffrey Dahmer was born and raised in Wisconsin, this isn't exactly a smoking gun. Love the podcast, this needs more attention!
i want bernie to know that i want to be taken down the same exact rabbit hole he had to endure, and to find out it's not true at the end helps me understand the wasting of his time, as it mirrors the time i have wasted by listening to this podcast.
love you guys
I watched ALL of the episodes, some even several times, they are that interesting. And for a while I was a bit scarred that we would not see a new one in some time, but no. You guys are just smashing it and it's a pleasure to see, please keep up the good work, you're awesome!
This podcast legit has a ton of potential. You guys have good chemistry which is probably the most important part of a podcast that so many fail at. Also the whole theme being internet stories and lore has limitless potential, please keep it up
It's totally possible that Wisconsin had BOTH domains pointing to the same server. I'm not exactly sure how common that was back in the day, but it's a perfectly valid way to configure your domains/web server.
Just wanted to say that this is the first time in a long while that I’ve super clicked with a podcast. I’m not saying I haven’t found other podcasts that I enjoy and look forward to but Netlore is some that is 100% something I get giddy when I see a new upload. So yeah, great stuff!
I need another multi hour penders video
I'm not a podcast guy but these have been great! I'm also so glad these are on RUclips, I don't do spotify or anything like that. The consistency has been great, keep em comin.
Disliked because Cybershell didn't threaten to kill me, boil & eat my arm and brag about it on the internet.
Are u okay?
This has quickly become my favorite podcast out there, please keep it up
Not sure if this makes for an interesting sugestion for a topic, but does anyone remember the Gremblo artshow hosted by Psychicpebbles? He unlisted all the videos related to it for some reason, even though it blew up back when it was a thing, now it's just a distant memory.
I love the presentation lately. I usually just listen but I happened to look at my screen and saw the powerpoint and thought it was good companion material.
Having a hard day and this is exactly what I needed. You guys rule.
This is my favorite podcast. Keep up the good work.
i'd like to hear about some of YOUR lore, like infighting and controversies in communities you two were personally into. personal stories are great
after cyberstalking both these individuals for a long time i can assure you that you dont want to know the lore
@@etasjo thats the fun part
I wasn't expecting much from this podcast at the beginning, but recently it's been shaping up to be one of my favorites.
Another banger episode, netlore will eventually become so significant online that netlore itself will BECOME netlore
Honestly the Ashley Maddison leaks would be an interesting after dark episode.
This must be a passion project cause i can't imagine how fast this gets demonotized, fascinating stuff as always
I want a After Dark version so I can hear more fuck up shit
You just summoned the usenet and alt.tasteless army
absolutely love this podcast, you guys always have the most interesting topics to talk about
the only person I've ever come across with usenet experience is rocco botte from Mega64. I remember him discussing it in depth on a podcast a while ago
a Netlore After Hours could be really interesting!!!
Jeffery Dahmer essentially being a proto-4Chan user makes a lot of sense, actually
someone didnt finish the vid lol
@@kayeffty no I didn't *Whips and nae naes away in shame into the woods, never to be seen again(I am eaten by a horse)*
@@enitenit2791 shut up
I fucking love this powerpoint format
I dunno bout you guys, but Cybershell looks more and more like Sonic everytime I see him
after i have found this channel i have been craving more cybershell, and i have found bernie's channel. im glad to see the future of this podcast
God damn, Ken Penders really did revive this podcast huh lmao
Love you guys, this was a great topic and I'm excited for the next one. ❤
Cybershell is proof that nuclear grade autism can be a blessing rather than a curse
look brother you two dudes could have a podcast where you talk about the history of eggs and i'm sure I wouldnt be alone in saying I would still be entertained by that
"please tell us before you die of old age" lmao
I would love an ascii art episode
I love this, please do not stop, I want to know more about early internet stuff so bad.
4chan started as an English-language imageboard for anime fans based on the Japanese imageboard 2chan. The reputation it has as a den of debauchery came from the first big wave of new users showing up and not knowing the board culture, thus annoying long-time users. They began to act out in horrible ways to drive away new users but eventually that ironic awful behavior became the norm, almost tongue in cheek, and now it's become the persona of 4chan itself.
This doesn't add up. ADTRW (Anime something tentacle grape warehouse) was a thing on SomethingAwful, and moot was there. Eventually ADTRW was banned from SA, and 4chan popped up. Not being into anime (or chans), I can't say a heck of a lot but it seems like there was a bit more involved than it just being a magical translation of 2chan.
@@shol2218 no, you're right, I skipped over the Something Awful segment, though 4chan got its design and format from 2chan.
So I was super glad to see there was a new episode. I'm honestly hopeful that you look into other Usenet things. I'm actually pleasantly about the truth or this one cause it'd have just been upsetting for me if it went the other way. Just hope that I can finally stop hearing about Dahmer
i would love to see an episode related to something like usenet, or just related to any other ancient long-outdated internet history as i'm very interested in this sort of stuff
conclusion: just make more netlore i have loved every episode of this so far
Maybe it's too recent, but the Smash Bros. Grinch leak will always be one of those NETLORE-y occurrences where I'll be wondering for the rest of my goddamn life what ACTUALLY happened.
This is the first time someone has mentioned something in these comments that I was actually around to see happen. That shit was crazy lol, I fully believed it too
Do it! Do network after dark cowereds
The cannibalism guy and a hedgehog shouldn't be in a room
Thanks for putting this podcast on Spotify! You guys made a long drive a fun one for me today, especially with today's new episode.
I'm really enjoying the podcast, it's fascinating to hear about all this old internet stuff!
It's nice that it's now on Spotify, but as far as I can tell it's only available on Spotify.
Is it possible for you guys to share the RSS feed, since any podcatcher can use those? Or maybe even putting it up as a show on Apple/Google Podcasts so it shows up in the search for most podcatchers? I'm not that knowledgeable about podcasting stuff, so I have no idea if this is possible/easy to do for podcasts hosted on Spotify.
Anyway, I'll keep listening on RUclips for now (the visuals and fan art are really cool to see anyway)
i wonder if you could make a whole video just explaining forum sig quote/banner/etc. culture. it was so ever-present, but now it's just kinda awkwardly half-replaced by "about me"s. idk if there's a compelling story to go along with it but it's super interesting to me.
plus also make more usenet episodes. i don't know anything about them or bbs's or anything like that
I have a fear of Usenet being more well-known with the kids, because they’d make a bad creepypasta or ARG about it
Right now there’s nothing like that for it. Think about it!
holy shit please do the ascii episode that'd be awesome
Seeing a new NETLORE episode pop up is a day stopper, gotta dive right in!
It feels like I'm in an oasis of Cybershell and Bernie content after crawling through the desert and they're here worried we're going to be angry that the episodes aren't netlore themed enough. I'd listen to these two if it were a fucking interior design podcast.
THIS
more netlore is always welcome
My favourite podcast ever. Thanks for putting this on audio platforms!
IM EATING UP THESE WEEKLY EPISODES BABY
I would love a Notch (Minecraft) lore episode. Keep up the good work guys.
Don’t apologize for posting Non-strictly netlore content
As long as you post periodic non strict netlore episodes, no one will complain about it not being netlore
Awesome pod
I don't know how to feel about being this early.
Feel good.
Same
yeah
Keep making these u guys are interesting to listen 2. Love this podcast 🔥🔥🔥
Make the Patreon! I would pay for the edgy videos.
I know Cybershell already made a video about wikis, but I hope one day there's an episode about obscure wikis and the stuff that goes on on them. I'd love to see like an episode about Weegeepedia
i fxxking love these videos!
I don't think the Mystery is that settled actually.
1. Maybe it being a Collage based Email was a red herring in the first place.
2. There are ways to access to University Computers without actually being enrolled there. I live in Wisconsin and never went to Collage but have had University Computers at my fingertips.
Oh boy new NETLORE
It’s crazy to think that this guy was living in the same city as Rich Evans
Another banger of an episode. I've listened to them all so far, and I'll continue to do so! You two make a great duo.
Also, I'm not disappointed to find out it's a hoax. The presentation was engaging and thought provoking, and remains such even after the reveal.
Babe wake up new netlore episode just dropped
I love this podcast and will watch every episode im only commenting because i heard it helps with the algorithm anyway bye bye
You guys are so cool. easily my favorite youtubers both of you my god you guys rock
Some nice content to eat along too
netlore afterdark presents: the truth behind pornhub
Sucks that it wasn't real, but I liked learning about usenet. Cool video!
this has gotta be my favorite podcast‼️
It's not super high-stakes, but an episode about when Neopets got bought out and the new owners fired the mod team could be good. The filters on the forums also got disabled on their way out so the posts basically exploded into chaos lmao. There's some funny stuff in there.
It would be cool to see „netlore after dark” :D
I love the line about no internet before 2007. To be fair thats really when modern internet and social meida took off. For the record I have RUclips videos from 2006, and if you're ever interested or know anything about the " Batman vs Superman Yo Momma" RUclips vid, I'm the creator. Good ol classic RUclips. I would love to see a Netlore episode on the birth of and early RUclips days! Back when everything was on there! SNL clips or whatever your heart desired
For some reason, it's hilarious to picture Dahmer as an online edgelord.
Makes those crazy fangirls even more ridiculous
I'm interested in netlore after dark, but not so much that I would pay for it.
best podcast online lets gooooo
I mean after you leave college you do keep your edu email address after a while. Idk if that was the case for it back then but it was for me.
an interesting story would be groverhaus, from the something awful forum
I'd like to see you guys cover the gross and weird cartoon sites that got popular before RUclips was a thing. Sites like JoeCartoon, Killfrog, Doodie, Camp Chaos, Happy Tree Friends. That weird period of violent, crude, at times downright malicious content that just came out of nowhere and took over for a while. Weird times.
