Got back from a month backpacking around America and my friends said they had a ticket for me to see Genesis at the Lyceum. Friends like that you never forget.
And you Definitely want to keep Those friends. Forever! 😂hope you had lovely memorable times backpacking the states. My God. As native, these days I’d never:( even mid80’s single young lady backpacking Europe was highly questionable ;)
...yes, when a friend of mine had tickets for K. Bush and sold them to me for cost price - when those sitting next to me had paid £1000's ......thanks Sian x
Wouldn’t it fill All our hearts with joy if they could. Would. Do it again. Sigh. I dream of PC drumming again. Dream into action kind of sentiments. I remember This PC, earlier, lil after, then I became bogged down in my own little studious world (I Did listen to radio ;)
Take close look at the tambourine head! It’s a wonder his fist didn’t go Through it. It was this kind of rhythmic intensity that kept us all Completely riveted. ❤🔥♥️
Man the crowd participation that London shows throughout the yrs set the benchmark for me..always wanted to see a show in London since I was a little kid..bucket list for sure..better fulfill it before the world implodes😢
I wish I was able to go to see them on their duke tour. I was a bit young at the time but fell in love with their music a year earlier when a friend introduced me to their TOTT and W&W albums. It was so different from the pop stuff that was being played on the radio. It opened my eye to complex music and talented musicians. I got to see them on their Abacab tour and saw them live every chance I got. What a talented bunch or guys. And now I can’t wait to see Peter Gabriel in about a month !!
I would say I think Phil always loved this song, Even way back in 76 on Seconds Out where it's an exciting song he sung and the band on the entire album. Phil was the right man to fill Peter's shoes after he left
9:18 I looked at this frame for a long time because the shirt looked so familiar. Dug in my closet a bit and i almost have the exact same Hawaiian shirt wirh the rocks, trees and everything except my shirt isnt that color. Still i am pleased to say that i have a duke era phil collings shirt and i wear it proudly ☺
Phil here is on fire and really, at the beggining it's like: "I play and I have the rythm, not you hahahah" the performance has it all: funny with the angry expression, hitting really hard the tambourine, teatrical, energy in all the song, hitting Rutherfords head hahhah, and doing some interesting percussion solo with Chester, how cool is that?
Who else noticed Banks' reference to the opening piano riff of Visions of Angels at 6:45? It's from the same album as Stagnation, which had just been referenced in Stuermer's guitar seconds before.
1972 -1978 was better! For one thing Tony's 1980's keyboards don't match the glorious Mellotron M400, 8 voice choir, MXR Phase 100 and a Boss CE-1 Chorus effects pedals on his organ that were used in the1970's.
yesshows100 Tony in fact continued using the MXR Phase 100 and Boss Chorus up til the Mama tour, but 1980 was the last tour with his Hammond T-102 organ. After that he used a Prophet 10 to replace the Hammond. Not the same. Tony really messed up from 1987 on (dead sounding leads with digital artifacts like the NED Synclavier - and lo res samplers EMUII). In 1992 the s**** hit the fan when he used crappy Korg organ presets (very likely "full organ" from the 01W or Wavestation racks) for the "Old Medley). And one of his signature sounds "the glide/portamento" was gone forever. I just like his use of the Roland JD 800 - like the lead guitar on "Fading Lights" on the "We Can't Dance" Album. Tony lost it completely in 2007. One crappy lifeless bullshit patch after another. He didn't even get the Hammond right. For such a tour I'd have the fucking best vintage console on stage - Korg Oasys, a controller keyboard and racks? WTF????
Christian Schonberger yup. The keyboards from 2007. I think he bought them in Walmart. Also how come during 1978 the power section of Afterglow Tony's keyboards sound like 1,000 voices. Never sounded like that again. Or One For the Vine. In 1977 Tony does that way better than 1978 or 1980. When Phil sings it's like a huge choir in the background. Never again after 1977.
yesshows100 Yep. 1978 was the last tour Tony used a Mellotron M 400 (Check the Chicago Uptown Oct. '78 bootleg which exists now in high quality). The 'Tron broke down and he had problems. So what? Hew had a ton of roadies and expert tech guys. Just send the M400 8choir - from the tape frame with 3 violins and brass - (which even has an organ-like quality to it, because the soprano voice is just one, providing that unique color - I have the samples). through a decent reverb or delay and you are there. After thaty Tony used the Roland vocoder with a synthesized choir. Awful. BTW: you might want to check my channel. Nothing to sell. Just fun and free stuff :-D
@@theofficialcoolguy69 Phil has admittedly said he smoked pot in the early Genesis days, but that's about it. He wasn't into anything that would make him even MORE Go-Go-Go. That's just his natural charisma and his comedic influences (Monty Python, Benny Hill, Steve Martin, etc.) coming through.
You said it...as Phil always said, he was the backbone of the live shows & there's barely even a shot of him. It would've been great if they at least cut back & forth to him when Phil was doing his tambourine punches at 7:50. In those early days, he & Daryl were kept more in the shadows, but Phil did take time in the shows to make sure that the crowd gave them their due.
Emulado aunque sea.....
Love this! Very unpopular opinion: I prefer Chester on drums. Much better pocket and beautiful fills. Of course Phil always owned it when he ran to the kit and picked up the drum sticks. Phil had found his front man voice, with distortion when needed. Great way to end the 1970s.
Tony said about the "Duke" album that Phil's voice finally had matured enough to make him a credible singer, that awkwardness was gone. This footage shows perfectly what he was on about.

Great vocals and great performance what a legend phil is.
I've never seen anyone look at each other the way Rutherford admirably looks at Phil when he's bashing his tambourine on the back of his head 😂😂
He pissed towards the end. Rutherford said he didn’t know Phil could pull it off… he sure did!!!!😊😊😊😊🎉🎉
At the end of that bit it looks like to me that Mike is pissed?
Not what you think…😊
I love the opening with Phil's controlling of the crowd ... a rock star.
The GOAT. People forget he owned the 80s.
@@ConcertSeason23 The goat?

Somehow this band and Phil as a front man are so underrated. Im always astounded by this. Incredible show by incredible musicians.
😢. My youth! Wonderful memories. Love Phil, Tony, and Mike. Daryl and Chester too, of course.
Awesome. Love it.
Greatest Group All in time for me.
Agreed.
I second that boyz 🎉

American audiences are too fucking stupid to pull that off …….
Have you seen the crowd sing Easter by Marillion video ??

It's great to see the crowd right up to the stage instead of 50 yards away.
UK Top Gear brought me here!!!! Richard Hammond's favourite song XD
Same here
My cousin was mike Rutherford's pa I used to get tickets to see them and go back stage and have a beer with them great days.
Wow! You must have some great stories and some fantastic memories. That is awesome! 😊
I so love this song! What a performance, such fun to watch!!
One of the best live groups ever .
When Genesis was at its prime. And yes, dare I say it, surpasses the Gabriel era. I always find myself going to this rendition of this track.
ha ha ha, genesis go down with the commercial line and was terrible
I think about 1976-1980 was their prime
Agree!! 1976-1980! THAT was Genesis!
What a pointless debate.
I thought Gabriel was the better singer but Collins done good job they be came a bet more light rock
The best live band ever
Mike Rutherford's funky bass licks and lines throughout this version are top notch. Too bad he gets no credit or listed where he belongs.
thanks for making this comment i wouldve never paid attention
yes people miss the fact that this is funky
You're kidding? He is the reason this tune funks everyone s bones up. Without him, this tune wouldnt be as legendary as it is.

This one still remains in my head since I was a kid.
+Rui Matos in my head too, mate
probably Mike's head too.
One of the few songs during Gabriel's era that got better when Phil performed it
one of the few 45 songs yeah ....
No kidding!
Oh man, you arent kidding !!!!!
Collins is much better than Gabriel to me.
Most Gabriel songs sound better with Phil on them.
Maestros totales.

Rutherford is a fine and underated bass player.
3:00 - 3:12 I'm surprised how Mike didn't lose his shit and beat the crap out of Phil
+Lemmy Kilmister haha xD
Lemmy Kilmister he did kind of shoot Phil a dirty look after lol
Lemmy Kilmister Phil is on fire! probably cocaine

i see this, and i m back in 1976 in my favorite Bar Tusculum on Saturday night 23:00 h. Remermber. Great.

la historia tremenda que cuenta esta cancion..!!
Phil Collins do pandeiro, Phil Collins da batera e do vocal. Este cara é fera!!!
CLASSIC ! I Like what I know _ I love Genesis - beyond the show!
the one tune I regret missing live. but I caught a lot of their gems.

Massive....I still miss them.
Thanks for putting this up on RUclips, it was one of the only few songs from May 6 that no one posted! Now I can complete my playlist. hehe.
Most Excellent 👍👌
like it.....am old
Love this video, thanks for posting!

Superb! Thank you.
Wonderful
It was really nice of the guys to pick up some random crazy bearded man to sing and play the drums. Wonder where Phil was during this time?
on a lot of coke probably

Phil’s time in a modern dance troupe came in handy
Wow what a prrformance

Chester's putting in that work

amazing
6:23 Stagnation from Trespass
Doesn’t anyone love Phil’s little Jon Anderson set up over there😂
Rutherford didn’t think Phil could match up to Gabriel. He did great!! Rutherford was pissed!

Dat tambourine solo tho
I love how phil added a MATE to me I’m just a lawnmower I think it adds some character
The new one
It's one a clock and time for lunch, dumdi dumdi dum....
Phil Collins; Peter Gabriel 2 grandi.
Happy birthday PHIL
Phil made Genesis better
Fucking Absolutely without a doubt..

This footage shows perfectly what he was on about.
RastaSaiyaman aye, he went from being an amazing drummer and an emergency singer, to a very multi talented music artist
OH, to be a tambourine catcher in that audience.
Almost 10 years later..
que chingon se oye en collins tambien!
Correct me if I am wrong but I do not see covers of this song being performed.

I got a strong feeling that this is the version of the song that Jeremy Clarkson tortures Richard Hammond with on Top Gear 😁
