There are songs and songs. This one, for sure, has a special place in our hearts. Sweet and remarkable music. Happy and delighted to see you singing and showing your songs to new generations, Mr. Stewart.
I was a music journalist when I attended concert and after-concert party for Al Stewart in Dallas in 1976. He really didn't want to duscuss album but his backup musicians did and they were really nice guys. They also appreciated being shown how to open push-top as opposed to pop-topped Coors beer.

About 11 years ago I was at an International guitar camp in the US and Al was a guest speaker/teacher. He was very entertaining and performed a few songs of his, but the most amazing thing he did was ask for any subject and he would write a song while he was performing it. He wrote two songs while he performed them totally off the cuff and they were good. Never seen that before and the whole room was impressed. He is a very cultured man who is an expert on wine and a very ardent historian.
Most of his songs have some historical basic or reference and he does his research. "Roads To Moscow" is an example. This came out when I was an older (27) student in college, and loved the romanticism. Year of the Cat is one of those albums that does not have one bad song on it.
Apparently he was hired for just that one single gig. Al was talking about it during the show that it's a different person for each city...that makes it even more impressive! Definitely a professional. Saxophone and flute fingerings are essentially the same so it's common to be able to play both, it's not like learning an entirely new instrument. But it's still impressive 🙂
