Ever the minstrel. Howe demonstrates his versatility here. He's quite pleased that the crowd seems to be attentive and appreciative. THat's not always the case for this kind of playing at a rock concert.
no, it is part of the prog repetoire. It isn't notable in the classical world. It is pretty... Before you hate on me, I love yes. Have a cover of Close to the edge and Gates of delirium on my page. Solo!
Really. The "rock age" having a small dose of culture and taste laid before them. Hard to to imagine then ... much harder to imagine now. btw, that's a stunning guitar too.
Ohh my....thank you for expressing what is so hard to put into words. A whole new world was opened up to me as a high school freshman. I remember the day I bought 'Fragile' in '71.
The 2 biggest mysteries in the Universe: 1-Gravity and 2- Why Howe is rarely mentioned when they talk about the best guitar players of all times in Rock history.
Sadly, I’m guilty of #2. I have played guitar for almost 50 years and am a hige fan of all the tupical big names, but when coming up with a list of favorite/ best guitarists I somehow forgetvto mention him. Makes no sense.
Steve Howe won guitarist of the year so many times in one of the music polls in the 1970s that they retired him. Then punk happened and the music press turned on progressive rock. He's a phenomenally versatile guitarist (rock, classic, flamenco, pedal steel) and solid composer.
Huge Steve Howe fan and this is my first viewing of this and I LOVE it. Great versions of both of these tunes...the Vivaldi piece is faster, quicker tempo and slightly different arrangement (?) than on the solo effort but is GREAT. Check it out on his The Steve Howe Album which is a fantastic album...I'm constantly preach on YT about the band members solo albums that came out in 1976 (I think they ALL had a solo release that year ? maybe I'm wrong)...they're all (IMO) as good as the band albums and to believe, around that time, that the group was putting out their fabulous Yes albums AND the solo albums also is just mind numbingly cool. Ok I'l stop gushing now...😍
As much as I love Steve Howe for his blending of rock and classical inspiring many guitarists like me to appreciate,l earn and play classical pieces like this Vivaldi, his abilities in the world of classical pieces are only fair. Student level really. It may sound beautiful, impressive and difficult, but his technique is actually a bit sloppy as he does not devote the kind of practice needed to play pieces like this Vivaldi properly. He of course does a better job with his own Mood for a Day composition which he has continued to play for over 40 years. Once you go down this rabbit hole, you realize how much there is to master in even the easier pieces. His real value is in exposing his listeners to new horizons of music that have shaped and inspired all western musical forms we know today!
As Steve's biggest fan, and a classical guitarist, I have to agree. If you'd been to a David Russell or Sean Shibe concert, you'd know the difference. Having said that, I did once sit across the aisle from him at a John Williams recital. Mood for a Day was spot on. It's the reason I started classical.
Was thinking the same thing. This is a piece you would play on a junior recital in a decent college guitar program, and he's not really playing it that well. It is fantastic that he is bringing this music to the masses. I hope that people seek out more of it and hear some real masters of classical guitar.
Yes, and the same is true on pedal steel, and flamenco, and he's no Guthrie Govan on electric guitar. But Steve Howe's versatility and compositions make him one of the greatest. His playing in the middle of "To Be Over" off _Relayer_ features all of this and is perfection.
@davin6175 That's a bit harsh - firstly he's standing up playing this piece, which is always going to be more difficult than the classic position sitting down with his left leg supported, and secondly Steve was playing it repeatedly, night after night, on that tour... so give the guy a break.

I agree, after all: ‘From the heart can go to the heart again’, writes Beethoven with unusually open emotionalism at the beginning of the ‘Kyrie’ (Missa Solemnis).
Actually I couldn't disagree more strongly, this was wooden, lacking in considered dynamics and the phrasing was poorly defined, it also suffered from uneven tempo and inconsistent application of notes inegales.

Does anyone really need to know everything about everything? It is fun and cool if you can but it does make life suck. Just an opinion of mine.
I've sometimes wondered what pickup/pre combination he used on this tour. While it surely benefits from a great post production, the fundamental tone is exceptional - hard to believe hes DI'd - devoid of any quack.
How coje he can use his picking hand's middle and ring fingers when he's hybrid picking (flat picking and finger picking simultaneously as he does in Clap) but when it's just finger picking it's just thumb and index finger?
So, if anyone wonders what became of Elrond after he sailed from Middle Earth . . . well, I think he became Steve Howe, and this is some wicked Elven magic. Rejoice, hobbits!
Vivaldi was a virtuoso violinist and composer of baroque, classical music. Steve Howe is an excellent and very versatile rock guitarist. Why on earth are you comparing them?!😂
