We don't stop playing because we get old, we get old because we stop playing.
OMG!! I would’ve cried like a baby if I were in the audience. This is such a timeless and beloved song and his voice is as beautiful now as it was years ago.
I would have been crying with you my favorite song of all time
I just saw Al in New Hampshire last night (3/31/23). I felt the same way when He was playing this
I'm crying too. This is as beautiful today as it was back in the day 💕
Pass the Kleenex please.
I’ve seen Al Stewart three times in the last 18 months. I can’t get enough!
People get older, voices change, but the guys playing the music can still jam that same tune. How great that Al is still performing
That's how it's done kids.💞🙏
envelheceu muito bem
@Dr.Quarex I mostly saw him in the late 60s and early 70s in London. Usually it was just him performing with his guitar. It had a real sense of intimacy in those days. Judging by this he is still a great performer although his voice has changed somewhat
It's completely remarkable that he is still doing this, and a thoroughly respectable performance it was. That is some sax player too
He's still got it.
I've always been an Al Stewart fan but this time I had a tear in my eye when he sang " there's something back there that you left behind". I thought about my loving wife I left behind in 2021 to COVID-19.❤
I'm 13 again. In my room waiting to record this song to cassette tape from a.m. radio. The D.J. just announced he is playing this song after commercial break. I can hardly wait to hear it......
❤
Yes!!!
I was twelve in 1978, seventh grade, my family moved to the next state. Tough time for a kid to move, insecure, new town, all old friends left behind. I would listen to the radio at night and the songs of '78 would make me think of my friends back in junior high in Nebraska.
You nailed it! We all did the same thing, I still have my cassettes from those days! OMG the memories
Talk about kicking it old school !
Since it was first released it has become a New Years Eve tradition to play this song , drink a glass of whiskey and smoke a cigar . Forgive me , I am an old man too .
❤
Sounds like a good tradition
The guy on Sax left the band. Saw this band and Al at the Paramount Peekskill March 24 2023!!! Perfect!!
Aren't we all! How F-ing fast time has flown by, it seems like yesterday this was on the radio...... radio remember that?
You rock
"Buy me a ticket on the last train home tonight" I'm 59 and love this song as much now as when I was 14. Stewart still sounds great and that sax solo really makes this song special.
🎯 Across the vast sea of recordings this is one of the most superb of all
What a treasure to see al perform here, in his 80s. The original _time passages_ from 1978 is a marvel of recording engineering. Theres only 3 other other recordings I can think of that are as highly instrumentalized (and a recording engineers career challenge) to establish proper acoustics & painstakingly balance all instruments through a forest of microphones & the mixing console. One of those 3 other examples is england dan & john ford coley's _love is the answer._ Incidentally it was recorded in 1979, just months after _time passages._ As a back-to-back combination, the two songs couldnt fit together better. _Love is the answer_ is also a legendary progressive rock single
All instruments have such razor sharp vividity in the aural foreground, including al's voice. Only the alto sax remains in the background, on subtle reverb. An unmistakeable fender-rhoads electric piano, accompanied by the accents of a harpsichord- - pure audio bliss! The sound image is truly amazing. My uneducated guess is top grade BASF or 3M 1-inch magnetic tape, rolling on one of the very best reel-to-reel recorders of the time. Such as a TEAC or a matsushita/ panasonic
As a musician I will be uniquely gratified to learn who al's sound engineer was that day, & in what studio ❤️💜
In some store shopping and quietly in the distance I hear this song drifting through the speakers, and I'm transported back to the 70's, smiling.
His voice and cadence are unique, and rather breathtaking. And at his age? Wow.
His voice has held up over the years.
Saw him in October of 2023
As you get older this song becomes even more of a treasure.
As a fellow musician (trumpet player), i love the "mojo" of the Saxophonist, Marc Macisso. "He's got it, he knows it" and is sharing it! Love it!
Mr. Stewart, OMG, your voice is just like 44 years ago! This performance with you and your wonderful, talented band is awesome! If possible, better than 1978! You were among the treasured musicians who were the soundtrack of our lives in the late 70's. I miss this music and instrumentality. Bring us more with this band!!
Excelente comentário!!
He may look like a retired bank manager but the timeless freshness of this song is testament to his songwriting genius.
It’s so commonplace how singers from abroad seem to lose their accents while in song, but not Al, that accent is prominent and enlightening; Time Passages is one of my all-time favs and the band killed it here
Peter Noone!
🎯 Ive always enjoyed that about al, too. He sounds very english to my ear, not scottish
Its not nearly as pronounced as al's, but steve winwood manages to retain his english accent, subtley, when he's singing. But youre absolutely right. Everyone from elton to paul, ringo, & john sound american when they sing

Saw Al a few years ago in Croydon, UK. After the show about 20 people waited behind in the vestibule for Al to appear and sign some CDs, t-shirts,etc. He appeared, done the signings, then promptly sat down at a grand piano which was in the vestibule and treated us folks to a private "encore" of above 6 songs, including "Year of the Cat" as we gathered round the piano for a sing-a-long! Amazing!
This song is one of those songs that NEVER gets old, it just keeps on going like Al Stewart himself! It's a "Tear Jerker"!!
His voice hasn't aged at all, still sounds like 1978.
Ahhhh, the fall of 1978! Remember it well. This brand new song playing in my like new 1969 Chrysler Town and Country station wagon. Just got out of Air force that September of 1978. A much better greater and different country, different people, different era, different time, different styles, different values, different music, different every thing. A time never to return again. Glad i lived it. Al Stewart still has it, and I still have the original 1976 first issue YEAR OF THE CAT album I bought at ODESSEY records for $1.99! At 55¢ a gallon gasoline then I could of bought almost 4 gallons of gas for my gas guzzling hog land yatch tank wagon.😮🤔😉😏😲😬😁😄😅😂🤣😭
Time passed for Al but not for his music..Great song, great band!
Marc Macisso is awesome on alto sax!
Al is the greatest.
He deserves a wider recognition.
Guy on sax nails the solos.
Sounds great .
That's Marc Macisso! He's awesome :-)
He was with them when I saw Al Stewart in Minneapolis 2 days ago. He also slays with the flute.
he has a nail-studio..... 😀
I love this song.. i miss you dad.. 23 years.. wish i could take the last train home to see you one more time.. cheers Fred, this beer is for you ❤ also, this is the most beautiful version ive heard. Bless all of you, and thank you for the memories
One of my fav sax solo’s of all time!
Remember this song in 80 when id go places work etc..
And it would come on the radio
Saxophonist Marc Macisso, outstanding performance.
Every note on the sax was soulful
Quite a grand re-enactment of a 40+ year old classic from Al. He sounds good… the star of show is the outstanding performance by Marc on the sax.
Oh man, what an absolute masterpiece of a song! Love and much respect to every musician and thank you Al Stewart, for blessing the world with this music.❤
Sax player Marc Macisso generates goose bumps with his performance! What a song!!
I saw him with The Empty Pockets a couple of days ago in Minneapolis. Great show!
Reminds me of visiting my dad way back in those days. Lots of emotions. Weird how music can do that. Take us through those time passages.
Al is touring again with this awesome band - Empty Pockets. I saw them in Fort Wayne, IN in May, 2023. Empty Pockets did the first set with their music and were an excellent back up band for Al. Josh Solomon is a superb guitarist and did the solos perfectly - both acoustic and electric guitar. The keyboard player has a very pleasing voice. Check out their music. The sax player is not part of the Empty Pockets band, but apparently brought in for Al. He also plays flute on songs that Al had violin in the original recordings. It was an awesome concert! They did most of Al’s best songs. 6:06
Just saw them in Mt. Vernon, WA. I agree about The Empty Pockets. Great bunch and they have fun! The sax player had left suddenly a couple of gigs before, and they recruited a replacement on short notice (I don't remember his name). He nailed the flute and sax parts, especially on Year of The Cats. He's now on for the rest of the tour.
Fortunate you!
@@bobphillips3222If it was Washington, that was the talented Chase Huna on sax and flute. He's a fun cat, glad you enjoyed the show, thanks for the kind words!
This is hysterical and scary. Empty Pockets will be playing at our tiny carriage house in Fanwood, NJ in May and I just googled them to see what they were about. Then, hours later, THIS shows up in my RUclips feed. I had no idea they were the band until I read your comment.
An outstanding presentation!!! Al Stewart still has it!!! Great musicians!!!
Youngest guys New bands... Realy great stonic.. And you. Míster Al. Stewart you are eternal ❤❤❤❤
Holy shit they didn’t have to go that hard but they did 🙏🙏😭😭♥️
Shame nobody writes songs like this anymore....
Soon all songs will be a.i. written
Just saw Al & the Empty Pockets in Minneapolis tonight. Great show. He's very funny, with entertaining stories between songs.
That was awesome. Love that sax, the world needs more great sax.
AL said Alan Parsons got him to add sax to his songs. says he was originally opposed. I think Alan Parsons is a VERY smart man.
Very cool to see Al Stewart again after so many years, this guy was part of the soundtrack of my youth.
As a kid growing up in the 70’s and early 80’s I would fall asleep listening to baseball on the radio. The station I listened to, KTRH out of Houston, would always play this song at 6am at the start of some talk show. I hated hearing it then, because it meant it was time to wake up, but I have loved in since then, and reminds me of a much better time in the world!!!
Wow! It's like looking at an older Al but listening to the same voice from 50 years ago. Wow! He has a very unique voice! Amazing!
I love this! Al is your best friends dad who gets home from the office and picks up his guitar! "Ya...my dad was a rock star in the 70's" Awesome!
Al is still a rock star.
He’s a classic! Part of our lives!
I love Al Stewart.
one hell of a sax player, timeless song!
"Year of the Cat,"...."78,"...Timeless Song!
Still sounds great. love all Al's songs. takes me back to the mid 70's. Best year's ever.
WONDERFUL SONG. WONDERFUL MEMORIES STIRRED UP❤❤❤
THAT SAX!!!!❤❤❤❤
I can't get enough of his music!
He was a post-war baby in a small Scots town. Great music from our past. Nice to see him still doing it in the present. I hope he continues well into the future.
His voice is still spot on Bravo Please load Year Of The Cat if he did it. Thank you.
Yes, yes!!
What a great storyteller in his songs! A true treasure!
Listening to this song ,my minds just gone drifting into "Time Passages"
Glad to see that Al Stewart is still out there. I can't believe so much time has passed.
Stewart is great. And so is that sax guy.
That sax was awesome! Great performance!
One of my first 45's wow
I’m very young, not even 9 or 10, with headphones on in the hills of the San Francisco Bay area. Intrigued by the beautiful album cover I put this on and I immediately know that it’s going to encapsulate a time and an era that I’m so grateful to have been a part of. Not just a Bay Area before attack but the entire world. Irony of ironies I use tech now to tell everyone about this wonderful moment and Time Passages!
One of my all-time favorite songs.
Crazy how we r in Time Passages while here with Al Stewart ✌❤🌎from🗽
There’s only two songs I’d want to be playing when the world ends: Somewhere Over the Rainbow, or Time Passages. I think those would be a perfect send off for mankind.
Sensacional ver Mr. Stewart ainda cantando tão bem 🙏👏
Still sounds good, and still rocking ‼️
Cool❗️📻🙂
Go see Al and The Empty Pockets perform if you can - I hear it's his last tour and The Empty Pockets are an amazing band on their own! Great show! Saw them twice within 4 months (had to travel the Second time ; ). An amazing concert and a great vibe!😊
Marc still blowing that Sax!
I love this song so much! Every time I hear it I have to play it multiple times. Especially the last couple minutes
I would of liked to have been in that audience. What a timeless piece of classic music. Those Musicians gave it everything they had in that song. Al’s voice is still crisp and sharp like in back in the day when he first cut that song. Absolutely beautiful.
A fabulous performance!
Such a great band, and Al Stewart is still in fine voice.
Sax player KILLED it.
So good.
I have loved Al Stewart's music since the off. He is simply unique and completely under-rated. Hopefully, Glastonbury will invite him back and we can get to see him live again in the UK.
Great tune. Great band. He sounds as good as ever.
It’s all about that voice, the timbre, the expression that can only be him. Classic:)
Absolutely. I heard what you talk about first when I was 13 in ‘78 and never forgot about this song & singer
He's still got a great voice...Like it
Well... Sat am on the island in Scotland. Saw Al at Birmingham (England) Odeon '79. Better than ever? Tx Daryl.
Saw him in the early 1970's when he opened for Shawn Phillips, Modern Times album tour.
He seemed younger than most of that band.
Al Stewart is still pretty impressive.
The yestardey song.. ❤❤❤❤❤Forever míster Al...
I always enjoyed Al Stewart's music. He still sounds great. His band is pretty good as well.
This song takes me back to my younger days in Spanish Lake MO. going to school at St. Aloysius, and this song was playing on KADI! Good memories!
Great bridge .. nice guitar solo ... and that sax, still sounds great ... blast from the past. Thank you.
The song is ❤Certainly Time Passages. Cause time is endless 👌🎷🎤🎸
Great Band and off course Al Stewart!
Amazing sax!!
Really nice! Great sax! Love this song, Al ya still got it Man
Dios mío...q..buena música. De mis. .tiempos.....Rock..80
the first time I ever heard the Name Al Stewart was from my friend Richy Dale, living in Sonoma California in late July 1975, who said he was working in a studio with Al Stewart. I was a Visitor who hitch-hiked from Virginia to Sonoma, and along the way caught a ride with Allen Collins and Ron Van Zant
He still sounds amazing.
I get to see him in Nashville this November at The Winery. Can't wait!
GThat sax player is so cool, he steals the show.
I wonder how long he has been with Al Stewart?
Great sax!
Thank you, Al.
Thank you, Daryl.
Damn Still sounds great terrific band
Excellent work on the audio and video.
Still the best of all time.
Love Al❤❤😊😊
Amazing. So nice nostalgy musik
As a student at London University in the 60s I used to see Al frequently at Les Cousins in Greek Street Soho where he was the resident musician. I was later surprised when he turned up at my house to buy by flatmate's TR6 the main consideration being whether he could fit his guitar in the boot!
Bedsitter Images was the backdrop to my life at that time.
With an instantly recognisable voice Al has been a vital part of those of my age and, as the first person in the world to hear The Sounds Of Silence being played, he has a place in music history.
Marc Macisso is the best. Too bad he isn't still with Al.
Saw them in Orlando. Totally awesome band. Al is just as young as he always is
I remember the first time I heard this song, and watching this video and hearing and seeing it performed with such incredible detail takes me back to happier, simpler times. Thank you, Mr. Stewart for the gift of your words and music.
