    I just got the 60 set (for about 16 Euro from german amazon) and I'm absolutely in love with them! They layer and blend so easily, the colours are awesome and some are pretty fancy, like there's a creamy popsicle mint green and a noble burgundy, not to mention the deep dark greenish blue ocean colour that I would marry if I could.. There are nude skin tones, powdery pastels, autumn colours, even some metallics. I tested them in my new Beasts of Tolkien colouring book and everything looks fantastic, better than anything I ever did before. It might sound weird but it kinda feels like these pencils are doing all the work while I'm just .... holding them :D You will not find a better value for money set than this. So yeah, y'all go get them!

    Yes these pencils are excellent, I have various sets of higher end colored pencils and I still love using these. And everytime I use them I start to wonder why Faber Castell (as well as Stabilo - the Stabilo Color is a great kid's pencil, too) can make these awesome pencils at such a low price, while Staedtler, also a German company, makes horrid kid's pencils, such as the Noris colour, which must be the hardest, most poorly pigmented name brand kid's pencil in the world, costing the same or sometimes even more.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  4 года назад +9

      I couldn’t have put that better myself. The Staedtler Noris pencils are terrible, there is almost no pigment at all in them and I have tried them on so many different papers including sanded paper which would ordinarily draw a little bit of extra pigment out, but with the Noris no luck.
      Excellent comment my friend and thank you so much for stopping by the channel I really appreciate it.

    i prefer these over the black edition, for the price and what they can do is just chefs kiss, i am absolutely blown away, i was thinking these would just be similar to those cheap staedler colouring pencils many of us had as kids, but as soon as i used them i was blown away, if you put pollychromos next to this unless you look real close and obviously colour fastness, you really cant tell the difference, i keep two pencil sets at any time my expensive lightfatness polychromos, and these, and the added benefit of this is you essentialy save your polychromos for special usses ie commisions finished work, if you want a great budget pencil with great pigment these are just something else, and when you can buy 60 pack for £13 i think i was dreaming, the other benefit of this is the skintone pencil, ive had every premium colouring pencil set imaginable and i still go back to the skin tone from this set its just on a different level, if you mainly draw in your sketchbook and want a bang for your buck go with this, they have a slight edge over the black edition with pigment and selection and if you just lay down polychromos and this other than one is lightfatness you realy are nitpicking when it comes down to colour to paper.

    Hi Harry, I’m a colorist and use all kinds of different Colored pencils, artist and children’s - and I really like these pencils. I’ve been coming to your reviews for awhile now and love your inclusive attitude regarding artist materials. I always get excited when you have a new review. - speaking of metallic pencils- there’s a 12 set of Faber Castell metallic pencils which are really nice too. Thanks again for the care you give to your reviews. Cheers.

    Great review Harry... I have a 48 set of classics that I let the kids use as well as myself...it really gives the kids a thrill to see how vibrant their pictures turn out. I agree with May... the better the pencil the more involved the kids want to be, in art...thank you, once again, for a spot on review.

    Thank you for another great review. :D
    And I totally agree with giving children good pencils, instead of the cheap hard ones, with no pigment. And these pencils are awesome. I often recommend these and the Faber-Castell art-grip pencils,before the Marco Raffine pencils. Around the same price, but much better quality with the Faber-Castell's :D

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  6 лет назад +4

      I completely agree with you May, I have only just received the Marco Raffine pencils as they are a set I have been asked to review. I have not yet had the chance to use them yet but I am looking forward to them. The thing is as you say, with this Classic Colour from Faber Castell, you are getting an excellent pencil, at a similar price point as you quite rightly say and they are of course Faber Castell, you can't go too far wrong. And the Art Grip sets are equally amazing, I have a set of those coming up for review as well soon.

    A very good review that does this pencil line total justice.
    Faber-Castell is my favorite brand. They are as thorough with their stuff as Caran D'ashe, only more affordable. I love Caran D'ashe too, but FC win on price vs performance. The Connector markers are great too. I can really reccomend anyone looking into those, if you are not worried with lightfastnes.

    Hi Harry, another great review. I have the 48 count set of these pencils and I love them. They don't have any "hard bits" that some inexpensive pencils do, you know that little bit that is scratchy, like an imperfection in the pigment core. They sharpen well etc...I also like FC eco line, the triangle barrel with dots Eco Colour Grip. They aren't as creamy as the Classics, they're "drier" but still go on smooth. They are, after all still Faber Castell....equals quality :) . Take Care.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  6 лет назад +2

      Cupcake WizaRD and that my friend is all that is matters, you are happy with them and you are creating beautiful art with them. As you progress with your art and people see what you are creating and start asking you to do a commission for them, then you can look at pencils with higher Lightfast ratings just so your wonderful art will last longer and never fade. But I absolutely love these pencils and they are so affordable for all artists. Good luck with exploring art and I am sure one day you will be knee deep in art supplies selling art to others or just creating art for yourself to keep yourself happy which is also just as cool as selling art. Thanks for stopping by the channel and hope to see you again.

    I love these so much! These and the red watercolour pencils from Faber Castell are what I used mainly growing up. I hope you can try the watercolour ones too Harry, those are very soft and kinda creamy. I used them dry mostly and they were very easy to blend. Anyways so after having tried other artist grade pencils and coming back to try them again last year, I was surprised at how much I still enjoyed using them. A testament to their quality. For the price it's an absolute steal! Thank you for reviewing them Harry, they definitely deserve more love 💖

    Fantastic review I will bear this in mind when some of my grandchildren need their supplies replacing, Thankyou for doing this giving the same care and quality to the review that you do to the more expensive pencils, I think people who don’t have a lot of money and starting out perhaps with adult colouring would be glad of this information as well. Certainly from the mental health perspective there is a growing move in thst direction, it’s what got me into art, I was in a very bad place when my youngest daughter introduced me to adult colouring, my first set of pencils were Marco raffine, now I have my beloved Fabre castel polychromos and about 36 Caran d@che luminance bought gradually open stock then several of the children bought a few each for me for my last Christmas present

    Fantastic review my friend and just what I needed. I have many artist quality pencils but have been stuck in hospital and possibly back again for a 3rd time, so its difficult to write. All they had at the hospital 'newsagent' were these F-C red classic pencils (unless I wanted to spend a fortune on pencils i already had). I was quite unsure about them, even including the bonus gold pencil in a pack of 12, but with a cheap colouring book, I was pleasantly surprised. Everything you say about them is true and its wonderful to know I can get almost as excited about a small pack of 'kids' pencils like this, as my others. Sharpened beautifully, great for detail, weren't scratchy, blended and layered quite well (not quite as good as artist quality of course and the paper wasnt the best!) but I was definitely happy to add these to my collection and was excited to see you had done a review of them. I'm also so glad to see you keeping on keeping on! :-) You're a champion and I truly hope you're managing ok. Hopefully I will be in contact soon as I said. All the best, Megan

    I absolutely agree with you saying kids should be using hood pencils from the start. I always buy Faber Castell pencils for them or similar quality brands. Although most my friends ask why I do it , because there are much cheaper options amd kids dont understand anyway. But I want them to enjoy colouring from very young age. Not just scratch the paper with pale colour hard pencils, which you can not even sharpen properly. I use them myself too in adult colouring books. Highly recommend this set !

    beginner on a budget here... just got these 2 days ago and i couldn't be happier. yes, super-pencils are clearly better, but they cost a whole lot more. if you're thinking about getting into art - get them. once you upgrade, you can still pass them on and it will not be wasted money!
    the cardboard pencil stand is a bit flimsy. reinforcement with a bit of sticky tape will fix that splendidly tho!

    I did not pack any of my Polychromos, prismacolor and Derwent pencils while on vacation - however, I was gifted some adult coloring books and a 24 pc tin of Faber Castell Aquarelles so I just grabbed these at the store to have more colors to use. I was not really expecting much because of the price but I figured at least I should purchase a brand I recognized. My oh my was I pleased with these. I am looking forward to using these with my Polychromos - I think they will play well together. I hope FC will offer these in the 120 pc set also. For reference, I have already purchased (in the Philippines) a box of the 10 pastel colored pencils, a box of 36 and a box of 60 (to use later) and all are made in Indonesia.

I'm a Polychromos girl but I have given a packet of these to every person who have expressed a desire to get into the colouring hobby because they're a really great starter set. In America there is a chain art/craft store called "Michael's", and they sell their own storebrand of art supplies called ARTIST'S LOFT. The ARTIST'S LOFT colored pencils are sold in sets and open-stock. I purchased one colored pencil, which I like. They seem to be a hard led, so I'm assuming oil-based? I'm also certain they are student-grade and not lightfast. I'm also curious about the opacity of pigment. Except for the lightfast difference, I wonder if you think they lay down like Polychromos.
    I don't plan to ever sell or display my artwork, as it's just a hobby for my own enjoyment, and I really don't have anything against "Crayola" (is this only American?) colored pencils as a wax-based pencil. I figure: if it works, it works.
    So, I'm wondering what you can learn and tell us about "Michael's ARTIST'S LOFT brand for the Americans who follow you.

    I also read the review and I have the set of 48. At Greece they cost around 12 e, but I guess transportation would explain the higher price in America. I did own an old set, but it's now only 3 pencils. When I saw the price I was superised it was so low, so I thought it was a lower quality set than the one I used to have. It was extactly the same, but it was a newer set, so of course it was a bit different. But the quality beats my other pencils. I also use giotto stilnovo, but I couldn't tell if it's wax or oil based. It dosn't have wax bloom, it's elastic and slides at the paper. But it's preatty cheap, so...

      Hi KB, it is so hard as a parent getting things right for our children. When my daughter started really loving art and studying art at school, we just bought her a set of cheap colored pencils and watercolor pencils because I did know any better at all.
      But as I became involved in art and realised that you can still buy really good quality art supplies but they don't have to break the bank, I felt terrible that my daughter had been using low grade products because I didn't know any better.
      However, I think the one thing that could have helped us and perhaps other unwitting parents was a list of products from the school highlighting good art supplies at affordable prices, kind of like they do when they provide a uniform list.

      Nephtalie Albert Hi Naphtalie, that was really and excellent question , in fact only when I had uploaded the video and was adding the link videos to the end credits screen did I realise I never mentioned the new Goldfaber in this review, which I absolutely should have. Any way, these pencils are actually quite close to the Goldfaber regarding high pigment levels, the Goldfaber are a little bit creamier and feel smoother laying down, which would be expected given the Goldfaber in my opinion fall into a new grade of somewhere just above student Art -Grip and just below the Artist grade Polychromos.
      Thank you so much for your wonderful question and I hope I helped you, I will soon be doing some comparison videos and I will be comparing groups of pencils a scientifically as I can, like all the Faber Castell Pencils against each other, All the artist grade pencils, all the kids grade pencils, all the student grade pencils etc. Any way thank you so much and talk to you soon.

    I am a bit shocked you reviewed this set. I live in indonesia and for years this is the only decent quality pencil we can get in the market. Professional colored pencil just entered the market a few years back. I also suspect these pencils are oil based. They are so hard and you have to be very careful using them. I remember tried building layer and accidentally made a hard stroke and I have no other choice than to burnish. These pencils burnish perfectly though. I for years thought these pencils are only available in indonesia because back then I can't find any information about them even in FC's website 😅😅

      With these pencils I like to use something like Strathmore 300 or 400 Series Bristol Velum paper. This is a nice paper surface, a little bit of tooth but not too much. It allows a reasonable amount of layers whilst still perfect for genres that require a smooth surface, like portraiture. Thank you for the question.

      The Art Gear Guide thank you so much for taking the time to answer! I am not a professional, just coloring for fun, and i just bought the castle art 120 set. I find them fantastic! I don’t have anything expensive, and i’m thinking, if the castle arts are sooo nice, so enjoyable (color and feel), how are prismacolor and polychromos? I was a bit in between arteza and castle art and your comparison really helped me, i am very grateful for that🙏🏻. I was just curious about the faber castell for kids because from all the reviews i’ve seen, they also seem to be quite good (ofc for hobbyists or beginners like me). Although now, after buying the castle arts, i can’t imagine how kids colors could come up to that level. And it’s not even the high end level! Anyhow, thank you again ☺️

For me in the UK, I purchased this set for £12, if you look in the description section of the video, you will see links to my written review and in the written review I have prices for a few different countries as well as links. Thank you so much.

    It annoys me you keep referring to these as kids pencils, I'm 33 and use these pencils and have this set and they are brilliant.
    Nowhere does it state they are kids pencils or aimed at kids, just because they aren't artist grade doesn't mean they are for kids, they are what they say they are just a classic set of pencils for everyone to use at an affordable price.

    • @TheArtGearGuide

      Hi Gary I am really sorry that I have upset you this is absolutely not my intention. However I am not sure if you watched the entire video or just watch up until the part I mentioned they are Children’s Pencils, got upset and understandably turned off.
      At the time of doing this review, and this is important, Faber Castell colour coded their products to make it easier for customers selecting products. Red were aimed toward the younger market, blue ie the Art Grip were aimed toward the teenage student artist range and then Green was their Artist graded products. I really apologise to you for upsetting you but as this is the classification of the company and I can’t ignore this in my reviews.
      However, even if we completely exclude the Color coding that was present at the time of this review, the pencils are clearly marked with an area for parents, teachers or students to have their names printed. Again this is Faber Castell that made these distinctions, I can only comment on what I see at the time of my research and review accordingly.
      With regards to nowhere does it stated these are children pencils, they were clearly marked as children’s pencils at the time of the review, again by Faber Castell, not me, but even if you go to their website today Faber Castell clearly state they are Kids pencils and can be used by Students and Artists which is exactly what I said in this review. However nowhere does it say for the Polychromos that they are aimed at Kids, students and Artists, they are only marketed toward artists. I said that the only thing preventing fine art Colored pencil artists from using these pencils in their work was the lack of lightfast capabilities. I was basically saying that the pencils are more than capable of being used by all grades of artist providing lightfast is not a needed factor.
      I also very clearly state in both my written review and video review that despite these pencils being aimed toward the younger artist, their quality does not represent this and that in my opinion they are very high grade with regards to their pigment strength. I stated that I loved the pencils and thought providing lightfastness was not an issue artists of all grades could use these pencils.
      Also Gary, one of the things many people like about the reviews I produce is the fact that I show and prove that although a company may market a product at the younger market, good art can still be accomplished. In actual fact in the right hands amazing art can be accomplished but I do my best at producing art with so called kids products to prove that very thing, that we older artists can use them. I am always providing reviews of much less expensive products and providing decent artwork with them to prove that cheap does not equal rubbish.
      I can’t be held accountable for the way companies market their products Gary or in my reviews just ignore these facts for fear of upsetting people even though that is absolutely not my intention. Incidentally Gary, have you contacted Faber Castell about this? I wish I could provide images in these reply’s but on the UK Faber Castell website the Classic red are still marketed toward children. I hope you understand reply, I am not arguing with you, I am simply ensuring you didn’t think I deliberately set out to upset you or anyone else reading your comment but I simply can’t ignore what the companies market their own products as.

    • @Gaz136
      @Gaz136 3 года назад +1

      @@TheArtGearGuide Thanks for replying, I looked on there official site too on the product page for these and it doesn't mention who they are aimed at. Also the name section can be used to write in a colour name rather than just assuming it's to write a persons name.
      I think the amount of times you mentioned these are kids pencils will put people off buying them and they will turn off your video and watch another pencil review for a different brand etc.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  3 года назад +1

      @@Gaz136 I am sorry you feel this way, however, I cannot change the way I do my reviews and just make up new categories for art products, like it or not and this is just a fact, pencil manufacturers make art products marketed for different age and artist groups. Look at Derwents page, Caran D’Ache and even Faber Castell. Better still drop Faber Castell an email or phone them and ask them directly yourself.
      Your right about the name placement, it could be used for the colour name, could be used for the favourite football team, could be used for vehicle names, or dog breed names. I like to think if Faber Castell meant it for the Color name, it would say Color and not just name, name opens it up to so many interpretations even though it is on a coloured pencils. Of course I could be wrong about the name thing.
      I’ve copied and pasted this from Faber Castells website for which I will provide a link for you so you can read the rest of the blurb.
      Colouring pencils for kids, students and artists
      Faber-Castell's assortment for coloured pencils ranges from high value pencils for kids to premium quality artists' coloured pencils. Our well known POLYCHROMOS artists' pencils are valued internationally by professionals and semi-professionals for their unsurpassed quality in regards to strong but easy to shade colors and the pigments' lightfastness.
      Faber Castell clearly state they have pencils specifically for kids, students and Artists. Now taking into consideration the Faber Castell range, if not the Classic Red pencils which are the cheapest pencils Faber Castell, which set could it be? It can’t obviously be the Polychromos they are the most expensive, and I am referring to cost a lot because even multinational companies know to keep products aimed at a kids market lower than their other stock, otherwise everyone buys the least expensive and the company is left with surplus product.
      It can’t be the Goldfaber because although well worth the money they are quite pricey and of course the Goldfaber were not released when I submitted this review but I have included them regardless.
      I understand what you are saying about people turning off the video because I highlight what the company have categorised the product as and that is upsetting to know, however there isn’t anything I can do about that. As I say, I’m not going to make up my own category because I guarantee you I would not only upset a lot more viewers but I would very much upset the company who made the product and that is not the purpose of these reviews, I am not out to upset people.
      I served in the British Army for 13 years and was injured during an operational tour, I never in a million years though art reviews could be as controversial and as upsetting as some of the scrapes we got into in the Army.
      I sincerely apologise if you thought by saying these pencils were marketed toward children but are of the quality an artist could use them, well, actually I don’t know what I could do differently because I am only stating a fact. Its sad to lose you as a viewer Gary over this, but you are more than welcome to watch these videos anytime you like. I have sent my contact at Faber Castell an email asking for clarity on this and as soon as I receive a reply I will post it on my Instagram account as I will need to take a photo of the entire email and I will post the reply regardless what FC say, if it shows what I have said is wrong I shall post it. As I say, I am not interested in creating new categories simply reviewing products based on my own testing and communications with the companies regarding research.
