  • I feel like a Trendy Teen! LOL! Today we are looking at the Faber Castell Black Edition colored pencils. They are pretty affordable and available in sets of 12, 24, 36, and 50. I purchased the set of 36 a few weeks ago for around $20. I am always on the lookout for soft, opaque pencils I can layer over watercolor and alcohol marker art.
Here are the sets available (affiliate links used)
    12: amzn.to/3TD3tor
    24: amzn.to/3KJNalH
    36: amzn.to/3pS8yv5 *I have this one
50: amzn.to/3e0AKtb (I wish I knew this one was coming or I would have waited!)
The bigger the set the better the price per pencil
    Pros:
    Price
    No-roll triangle body
Sharpens well in a standard sharpener
Environmentally friendly, zero carbon footprint, made from sustainable wood
    opaque-great coverage
    Soft and blendable
Great over alcohol marker or watercolor
    No breakage
All colors in the 36 sets were extremely water resistant
    Cons:
No color name or number on pencils
    Not available open stock
These can develop a waxy bloom but you can buff it with a tissue to remove it if you want a shiny result or go over it with a clear alcohol marker for a matte result.
They are soft so will require more sharpening to keep apont (not as soft as prismacolor tho)
    Bottom line:
These are marketed to teens but I think they would be great all ages. The compackt box keeps the pencils tight in a backpack and the non-roll barrel will keep them fropm falling off a desk and breaking. Great for kids! the colors are vibrant and opaque on all colors of paper, great for everyone else. They are most similar to Derwent Chromaflow pencils but also close to Prismacolor Premier and Derwent Coloursoft so if you have been looking at those brands you might consider these too. My only regret is that I didn't buy the 50 set.

They were made for the Latin American market where they are marketed as Faber-Castell SuperSoft.
Black edition is the name for all other markets.
There is even a 100 colors SuperSoft set, whereas the biggest set for the Black Edition is just 50.
In Brazil they even have special small sets for Warm, Cool and Skin tones.

A 100 set? Damn now I'm jealous! Bet it's just as pricey, if not impossible, to get that set in Germany. Like the 150 Prismacolor set. Around 300+€. Way out of my budget...😔

@@koppsr The 100 colors Supersoft set can be found from 45~50 EUR all the way up to 92 EUR here in Mexico depending on where you buy it (Amazon has the most expensive listing right now).
I’m jealous of Brazil because they have released sets (a skin tones set and Metallics set) that aren’t sold where I live and those have colors not included in the 100 set :(

They are all the rage here in Brazil. You can get a 100 pencil set, and several other kinds of sets (neutral colors, cool colors, warm colors, etc). They have round barrels here, and are marketed to adults who love coloring.
The same factory that makes those also makes crayola colored pencils for the American market (some of them).
I had no idea prismacolor were even softer… now I want a set…

I have the 100 set, the ECO super soft, and I love them. They are round and have numbers on them but fairly certain they are the same pencil. Work really well in coloring books that have smoother surfaces like Rita Berman's books

If anyone has friends or family in Germany, ask them to get these for you, the 36 set is at 13,99€ and the 50 set is about 22 € now. And they're a really good deal, bought them myself and LOVED them.
Only downside for me is them not being labeled with a number and , as far as I know, not being in stock as single pencils.
Other than that, can only recommend!

Cool seeing you reviewing these Linsday! I was wondering the other day if you will ever use these! And here you are girl!
I'm from Argentina and here they didn't seem marketed exactly towards teens, but mostly as a school range pencisl They are not triangular shape, but round, and they are called "Super Soft" with creamy consistency, black wood... I guess they are the same pencil? . I couldnt resist and got 3 sets, a warm one (reds pinks oranges and yellows), a cool one (blue greens) and a basic 12 set piece. There is also a skin color set and in Brazil I saw they even have a neon and pastel set, and a neutral (greys) set . In Argentina you can get bigger sets (up to 100 colors) also color coded ones, although I think you can't get the full range that way?) The only bad side is that you cant buy loose colors, as a kid I remember getting sad because my favorite color was tiny tiny haha and that meant saying goodbye to it until most of them are so short that mom and dad would agree to get a new box.
I knwo these pencils wil not be as good as prismacolors (I can dream lol) but I wanted to give them a try. I make simple manga/cartoon art, and for that they did well, I use trementine to disolve them, paper however changes the outcome a lot. Some of them had a lot of breakcage but I contacted my local faber castel, sent them the defective ones and they gave me a whole new set replacing the one I had :).

No more but they are all so pretty. Yep, I’m a pencil hoarder. PS - see I have the 36 set & really like them for Christmas cards for night scenes. Now I have the 50 in my Amazon cart. I have to order some things this week so I’m going to let those go through on the order. See, see, see they are so pretty. Someone tell me NO. My husband is not going to. If I mention I want something if I don’t get it for myself it still shows up at my house. He is no help saying no.

Faber acastell has different colors to identify its lines. The school line is red, the intermediate blue and the professional green. These are red line, but because of their good quality they are considered intermediate. (some even say that they are like an intermediate between the hardness of the polychromo and the softness of the prisma, the latter I do not have to compare them on my own). I have the set of 24 colors, in Argentina they are Eco Super Soft but advertising also sells them as soft and special for black paper. Thank you for this review and the comparison with other brands! 😘😘😘😘

I've looked at these and as a colorist I've found I actually prefer more transparent pencils. Even my beloved Prismas bug me at times, due to the way the cover the linework. It really depends on what you are coloring but when working with an artist who uses a lot of contour and shading in their work, more transparent color just lets it shine through. I also find since I work almost entirely on white paper you get a lot more luminosity in your coloring. I think they are an excellent alternative for those doing actual drawings on colored paper though.. especially compared to the price of other opaque brands.

And they blend and layer as smoothly as my prismacolors!, I *ABSOLUTELY ADORE* them.

I'd be interested in that too! I was eyeballing Lindsay's swatches ;) One of my absolute favorite colors is blue-violet; light or mid in tone. There are similar colors in the Brutfuner Square set, the Brutfuner Macaron set, and the Lyra Polycolor set. Oh, and Purple Haze in one of the Black Widow sets. Problem is, I don't think they're artist-quality so they're probably all fugitive. Faber-Castell, being an old, reputable brand, might have better lightfast ratings for light to mid blue-violet in the Black Edition. Or maybe the Derwent Chromaflow set?

Climate friendly shipping 🤔🙃 always gives me a giggle. Its why I dont order handmade paint from us or uk; kindof ruins the point of going green :P

They are a royal pain to sharpen. My god. They are shaped triangular and both manual and electronic sharpener chew them up. Serious design flaw, this brand should know better.
