I would be interested in a head to head of the Faber Castell pencils.
I recently bought the 100-set, and can give additional feedback on them.
- The triangular barrel is indeed hard to sharpen. The blade bites into the wood, making it hard to turn the barrel. Forcing it breaks off wood fragments. The best tool is a new, sharp manual sharpener.
- The triangular barrel is also not pleasant to hold for larger hands. There is one specific way to hold it comfortably, so I can't just grab and go, but need a moment to adjust my grip.
- The 100-set has additional neon and pastel colours. The leads of the neon pencils are noticeably harder than the others.
- I have one pencil where the lead is very weak and crumbly, and needs a very sharp sharpener.
- In a set as large as this, yellows are underrepresented. Only 4 that I can truly call 'yellow', including neon and pastel yellow.
Ultimately, I do not regret buying this set. There are lovely colours, and on more toothy paper feel smooth to use. For the price, they still exceeded my expectations. They are perfect 'fun' pencils for sketching, without being worried you get the most out of it.
I have these too! They are a beautiful set of 24 colours. For layering, I paint a coat Liquitex Clear Gesso onto the paper. Once its fully dry, I add lots of colours. You just have to remember to use a fixative on it when you're done, or the pencil dusts will come off eventually. On gessoed paper, the colours appear richer and brighter, than when you're using it on plain un-textured paper.
"Pass or purchase" sounds like an awesome series for a wide variety of tools/medium, you should definitely do that! You can have a rating system (1* - 5*) and a final result -- pass or purchase.
Five thumbs up for a black paper follow-up! With regard to the difficulties when trying to layer them, I bet it is because of how soft they are and tend to quickly saturate the peaks and valleys of relatively smooth paper. I bet if you try them on a more coarse dark paper, like one made for pastels for example, that they would probably layer much better.
Yes, please do a video on the best colored pencils on black!
Posca Pencils are the best on black paper, at least from my experience.
I would most definitely be interested in a class on what is best to color on black paper. Thank you for offering. You are the very best!
I always appreciate your in depth reviews.
Rose is so sweet to watch. It was funny watching her sleep quietly during the video. It was funnier when she barked and wagged her tail in her sleep. It was hilarious when she woke up with bed head.
In Brazil, Faber-Castell named it Super Soft.
I like it a looot...
Sim!! Nossos SuperSofts
I bought the 100 Black Edition set. They’re fun and make a nice addition to my collection of pencils.
I hv the 100 set too. Really enjoy them
Yes please do the follow up video featuring coloring on black paper.
I would love to see a Faber-Castell head to head. Thanks for a very informative video.👍👍🙏🏽
I've had these coloured pencils for about 2 years now. They aren't a new pencil here in Australia 🦘. So I wouldn't say they are trying to copy the Amazon Basic pencils. I only found out about the Amazon basic pencils just the other day and cannot get them here in Australia unless you order from UK Amazon. Plus when these black edition came out here they could only be purchased at chain store here called Big W ....not Amazon. Anyhow I like them! I feel they are similar to the Prisma pencils. I would recommend them if you can't afford the Prisma 👍
Hi, yes I’ve also had these pencil for about 2years, bought them from Big W in Australia. They are not at all expensive and aimed more for students and children. I love them. Have just recently purchased the 100 set.
I have them for 2 months, and they are so amazing, I love them.
To compare Premier and Black Edition, is B.E. better in budget.
Also pencil lead is great quallity ...
I have 100 set❤🏖🌜🌈🔥🌈⛄
@@jeannettetranter6234I am in Australia too, where did you purchase the 100 set? I found 50 set at Officeworks
I have these black edition pencils and love how soft they are, my set had none missing and even the most expensive brands can have mistakes with their manufacturing. I also think comparing them to other soft lead pencils would be better. I use these instead of my polychromos when i want a softer lead.
They are made in Brazil, they are school pencils, it means they are for children, not professional. So, for children it is a really good pencils. Faber Castell have 2 factories, German and Brazil. Brazil make all school pencils and in German they make the professional version. I know that cause I'm from Brazil. Also in Brazil we have what they call black edition in europe, we call super soft and there we have 120 pencils.
Such a useful video, thank you so much. Certainly would be interested in Faber Castel comparisons 💖
Thank you for this review !
Oh my... I love the way they looked on the black paper! 👁️👁️💌 Thanks Jennifer for always putting out informative content for us colorists. Plus your just to cute🤗
I’m a new subscriber, and I sooooo appreciated this review!! You were super thorough and honest, and I appreciated how you described what they are and aren’t good for. Since I’m looking for pencils that layer better, I’ll keep searching for my next 50 pencil set. Would love to hear your thoughts on the best pencils for black paper if you could get around to making one at some point.
Thanks for your review. I got excited about pencils that would be more vibrant on black paper, and your excellent coverage of this new line convinced me to pass, too. I have Polychromos 60 and just starting out. Having practiced on a few coloring books and inspirational cards, I sealed them with gloss spray and gave them to friends. So, now beginning to explore different papers and subject matter and accessory items. You mentioned Derwent pencils being more opaque and good on black paper, so I would love to see you do a review like that...
Hi Jennifer,Steve and rose .. thank you for this upload I really appreciate these videos as they me as what to purchase tysmfs 🥰
Thank you, great information on those pencils.
Thank you for the review! And yess, I would like a video of what pencils are better for drawing on black paper
Jennifer, thank you for all the reviews and tutorials. I’ve had the Faber Castell black edition pencils for approximately 2 years. They are sold here in Australia along side the other Faber Castell Classic or Red line aimed at children/students.
I have just purchased the 100 set from Amazon Australia for $ 85 Au ( this is the total cost including free delivery from UK) - approx $57 US.
I really do like these pencils - really good budget pencil.
They work really well we reasonably good layering on Amazon paper and of cause better on my better quality paper. My grand kids love them, easy to use and great for the dark or coloured papers. Great for projects.
Would certainly recommend as a great student grade pencil.
Thank you for the review! I’m definitely interested in watching a video about the best coloured pencils for black paper. I’ve been on a quest to find the coloured pencils that look the best on black paper!
A head to head would be great & thank you for this very thorough review.
Faber-Castell Black Edition are not made to compede with Amazon colored pencils.
Just because you didn't saw them before does not mean they didn't exist for years now. 🙃
It's a German brand.
Faber-Castell has many more different lines.
The classic in the red line, than there are the trip color pencil made in Indonesia if I remember right. They are way more soft than the classis. (There are also two classic variations. One with number and one without.)
Grip are a water soluble colored pencil.
The black edition were sold in 100 colored packs for quite a while in south asian regions including India.
In Germany we had up to 36 colors. But since two years ago, we also can buy the 100 set. They also released a new set with base skin tones recently.
Just to clear that up. 😋
Maybe, if you buy pencils from other countries, you could ask artists from that country about the materials.
I have seen at least 2 colorists in the UK use and comment on these pencils using a set of 100. Their reactions were of a positive tone.
Looks good. Thanks for the review.👍👌
They’re surprisingly look so good on black paper! So vibrant!
For what I've heard that pencils were created to take good quality affordable pencils to South America, I believe that's one of the reasons they are made in Brazil, I might be wrong but that's my understanding. As they people start to take interest they start to sell it every were, but Brazil had the 100 set available for months and months before it reached other markets. I'm am curious to see how the 100 set is balanced colour wise.. I just got the skin tone set as I was curious to try it and missing some skin tone pencils and I think they seem nice, at least soft, but haven't play with them enough to have a final opinion. I was surprised that you had problems with sharpening, I've use the dahle 133 and it was fine, maybe give it a try to see if you have better luck with it.. Thank you for another video.. ❤
Always love a little cameo of your dog . Thank you very much for the review. It was very informative, concise and complete. Sending hugs from Italy. Rita ❤❤❤❤
Thanks for watching!
Hi Jennifer and Steve. During my recovery from surgery i hv treated myself to the 100 set of these. Im finally able to try them a little now and really enjoying them n the colour selection is much better too.
Yes, bring on the Faber-Castell Showdown/Smackdown comparison!!! I am tempted to get either the Red line or the Gold Faber due to the cost, but if I would be disappointed, then I would save up for the Polychromos.
I’ve had this set for almost two years here in the UK. I love using them. They are very comfortable in my hands. I would love to see a head to head on these pencils.
Great video, would definitely love a video on best colored pencils for black paper. Thank you.
Michaels stores in our area carry Goldfaber open stock.
Yep. Same here.
Thanks for the honest review-they almost had me 😊
Thank you for the review on these pencils. I would be interested to find out more on which pencils you recommend to work on black paper.
Me too :) -- Thank you for all your wonderful reviews!
Great review❤
Thank you for this video. I would love to see a video for the best colored pencils for black paper. ❤
I’d be very interested to hear what you recommend for black paper! And the Faber-Castell head to head to head sounds like a fun and useful video too!
I have got this pencils. My journey started with purchasing them for my sons friends, as a birthday present , as an addition to the colouring books. They are stylish and good looking pencils exactly for teenagers. They are not marketed as adult pencils. They were not available in set of 50 in Germany. Only small sets. So I wasnt interested getting them for myself . Later on when I saw 50, I bought them. I loved them. Use in Lulu Mayo books and have no issues. I have set of 100 as well but didnt open yet. I think they are great value for money. Set of 100 costs 36€. They are definitely much better than classic red line.
Those colored pencils were released in Colombia 4 years ago under the label supersoft instead of black edition
thanks for thorough review
Wonderful video. Thank you for sharing. I was debating on if I should purchase these or not and after watching your video I have decided I do not need them.😊
A video on colored pencils black paper? Yes please! My journey into colored pencils on black paper has been hard! Many people use hotpress watercolor paper for when they want to have only a little tooth to make the most opaque pencil art, but hotpress watercolor paper in black is hard to find. I dont remember the derwent drawing line in your last black paper video. Id love to see how various brands fare againat each other in terms of opaqueness, and what black paper to use. ❤
I have these coloured pencils Black Edition.
And I love them. Really very good quality🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌦
Yes! I would love to find out what is the best pencil for black paper.
Jennifer, your hair looks so pretty!
Yes, do so. I love the color pencil battles. 😂❤
I use these ones for practicing in my art creation sketchbook :)
Woah I almost wanted to buy them. Phew!
Thanks so much for the excellent and comprehensive review. I have the 36 set and wasn't aware that there were larger sets. I was wondering how you printed the Mandala on the black paper ☺
The classic is one of my favorite ! I have the Black edition a nice pencil set and the gold Fabre.😎
I have to agree with Alison D.
I too would love see a comparison vid between these and the Black Widow collection. They look amazing together in the same case
Thanks for another great review. I purchased the 36 set about a month ago and so far have only swatched on tan paper. I did like the way they swatched out very much. Not Poly or Prisma, but still very good. I feel like I will be using them quite a bit. My 36 set does have the correct #736 pencil and no other issues of that sort. I completely agree that the triangular shape is annoying to sharpen. I was also unhappy with the lack of color names. Thanks for finding a fix for that. :) The 36 set does not have the stand, but I'm sure it would have ended up in the trash anyway. The packaging is pretty bad. I had to put them in a pencil roll or I would never have used them. I would like very much to see a Faber Castell line head to head. Please include the black edition also. I LOVED Rose's happy dreams in the background.
Now I want to try my derwent drawing pencils on black paper. 🎉
I absolutely love these colored pencils! To layer i just go slow and gentle! When my picture is done i spray it so it lasts a lot longer. They came out with a black edition 100 count. And yes i grabbed it! Faber castell has been listening to its customers. The black edition came out in a 36 and then people asked for a bigger set and we got a 60 count and finally we have the 100!!!! I just love how easy they blend,. I love how easy it is to put color down on an adult colorbook. I love the color range! Im going to try putting glitter gel pens down on top of a picture colored with black edition pencils. I also want to try coloring a picture with alcohol markers first and then try these pencils on top.
On the website they very specifically say these are ideal for children. The triangular shape is great for little hands, and the soft lead allows for a lot of color without too much hand strength. I don’t think they’re aiming at the adult colorist.
I think that the Goldfaber line is more aimed at colorists/crafters who don't care about lightfastness but do care about blending and pigment load. So it's a balance between price and quality I feel.
I hate when reviews purposely ignore things like that, just for content. Pre- teens like the bright colors and are less likely to spend hours layering. It’s like comparing apples and oranges.
I have had luck mixing with colored pencils. Can't get a lot of layers but I still love the way it comes out
@@Msboochie2 "purposely ignore...just for content"? We frequently review products made for "kids" to see if they are suitable for "adult" coloring. We didn't purposely ignore it just for content...we simply reviewed a product to see if adults might like it too-regardless of who it is marketed to. Adult colorists purchase "kids" products all of the time.
I totally agree. These are an old line of pencils made for children. My nephew is 8 and loves it. I got these for him when he was about 3y old or before. It was a long time ago. I don’t see how they can be consider new. Well, but I’m in Brazil. And the full set has 100 colors. And Faber would send another pencil really easy to correct the wrong one. I never had much problems with Faber and I use them since I was a child - like 40 years using Faber-Castell. But I don’t use children’s pencils anymore. It’s for children. I can’t compare with Polychromos or Prismacolor. Or Derwent Drawing. Btw I wish Derwent would make beautiful colors with the Drawing formula.
The head to head Faber Castell comparison is interesting. Go for it!
Head to head to head competition sounds interesting to do!!
I ordered these pencils ( amazon uk, triangular). I do like these for a budget pencil.
Please do a head to head comparison on black paper!
Thanks for reviewing these I’m wanting a cheaper but best bang for my budget dollar. You have helped me to pass and make a better choice.
Please do more references for black paper colored pencils. Would love to see more!
yes yes please, i need to know what is the best pencil on black background, are the derwent color line lightfast?
Would love to see a head to head on various papers!
This is very helpful because I wondered if they would do well on greyscale coloring pages. Probably will show grey through.
I think these have been out for a few years they just came out in bigger sets more recently. I have the Eco Super Soft version in a 50 set they're nice but think they are def more for the children or beginner market 🙂
I wondered about this set of pencils. I'm glad to hear I can pass on them as I really have enough pencils.
I got the 36 set, now they have 100. I appreciate you saying they don't layer well, I thought that was me.
Thank you. I heard of these a couple years ago, but they were hard to get here in the US. I've bought Goldfaber open stock pencils are at Micheals.
What pencils do you recommend for tan and black paper? My go to pencils are my prismacolor a and just started using Polychromos a little… but enjoyed this video and wondering what to use? That being said … I don’t venture from white paper hardly at all…
Yes to the compete with the three lines of pencils.
The best colored pencils for black paper are Prismacolors Premier’s, use dry Caran d’Ache (Museum) and use of dry Faber Castell (Albrecht Durer + Black Edition) I had twenty colored pencils brands and these are my best results on Fabriano Black paper 300g/m2. Hope these informations may be helpful to someone! From Quebec in Canada 🇨🇦, 😊❤
Try the Posca Pencils and be amazed, they are simply the best on black paper.
Thanks for showing us these pencils. There's one box of 12 pastel black edition, do you know if they are diferent colors or a selection of these ones?
And ...yes!!! We need that comparative between the diferent fc
OMG Rose in the background at the end, 😂🥰
I bought these pencils to use in the Amazon books with black toner backgrounds. After one experiment, I was a little under whelmed. I think it's because the paper is a few shades away from true black. I wonder if using an inexpensive black alcohol marker on the page before coloring with the pencils would improve the pencils use on the Amazon paper for background effects? Might be worth a shot, for others that don't mind coloring on the much whined about "Amazon paper." Lol I actually prefer the Amazon paper over some other types. I've found ways to get nice results.
I'm not into the whole battle of pencils sets thing. I find it's an apple versus oranges thing. Different supplies have different uses.
Love to try these pencils brand
Would love to see that pencils on black paper vid
Like the faber castell head to head idea! Please also consider doing a prismacolor color along too…been a while I think since you used prisma!
I'll be interested to see a comparison as well. I still have a box of Crayola FX bought in Canada more than 20 years ago, these pencils are awesome on black paper. Probably one of the best cheap brand I had for showing so well on a black surface . The box has 12 color only. Sadly, Crayola never released any pencils of that quality after. At least, not to my knowledge.
Thank you for the review. I was going to buy them, because I thought they were specifically for black paper, but I can see that they are not up to my standard. I own full set of Polychromos and it seems like they will be better long term.
I love that you smelled the pencils, that’s the first thing I’d do 😂👏🏻
Hello Jennifer and Steve,
Thank you for your review on the Faber Castell Black Edition "pencil crayons"
I would personally if I had bought them given them to a child if like you I was not satisfied with them.
BTW try using the COLOR PEP'S sharpener with two sized pencils. Triangular pencils sharpen just fine in the big pencils.
I send a hug to sweet Rose 🌹.
Was put off by the sharpening issue at 21:27 but caved and bought the 12 set neon & pastel to try. Your Exacto sharpener was the issue, i was able to get them into my Eagle electric sharpener to do all in 1 step. A little tight but it worked fine. The fine points did snap easy with just a little over light pressure used but overall pencils still ok and I like them.
I would love to see a comparison between the Polychromos and Goldfabers especially. I have niblings who are into art and I would love to gift them something from Faber Castel that's not a student grade but also not as expensive as my Polys!
Are these the same as the eco super soft set? They seem the same, but super soft are round, not triangular. But is the core the same?
I bought the 24 count for my black paper. I’m still playing with them, and I like them. Hopefully with practice I may get more color payoff. But I love the pencils. What color is your nail polish? Pretty blue! Please do more on black paper, thank you 😊
I’m going to purchase the 50 set now, just to see if they have found and corrected the errors.
I have Mr.Pen manual sharpeners. And they sharpen real well. The triangle shape is ergonomic for people with arthritic hands. I bought my 50 ct. Set in aug.2022 and i bought the 36 ct. Set in 2020. These have been around for a few years. Hope this helps. Have a colorful blissful day.
I’d love to learn what pencils work best on black paper!!
I liked your video. I would like to know if the Black Edition pencils are wax-based or oil-based.
Thank you very much
I saw someone else swatching these pencils recently (the 100 count set, though) and they also had a duplicate color and were missing a pencil, but I can’t remember which one it was.
About the Marketing-
These were actually produced for the latinamerican market with the "supersoft" label as a higher-school grade art supply and as an alternative to more expensive studio grade pencils. They are popular an well received, so well received in fact, that other cheap brands started marketing black pencils too aksksksksk
Because of their popularity, Faber Castell brought them to different regions with the black edition tag. I don't think it has anything to do with Amazon •3•
Lova ya videos uvu
Hi guys, what are my options to have printed black pages that show up the lines please?
Hi! I am interested in a review/recap of colored pencils or other tools for black paper. ❤
Hi Jennifer, I'm indeed very interested for a following video using opaque colour pencils. That would be awesome. 🙏❤
I just received my box and all my pencils are correctly named and numbered. I also had no issue layering. I don't have any issues with sharpening either, so I am liking them. I am sorry you did not have a good experience with them.
Hi, here’s what I just found out, contrary to a negative remark I made about them some time ago. I find them intriguing. They are almost one to one like the posca pencils. I have been colouring with them a short while, they feel strong, no breakages in my Amazon electric sharpener. BUT, here’s the interesting thing, I have 3 sets. Two sets of twelve one regular and one neon and pastel, I also have a tin of 36. The set of regular 12 colours are slightly different from the colours in the 36 tin. Now whether they changed the colours or shades slightly, I don’t know.
Anyways, I will continue using mine as practise pencils and I like the fact that they feel like good quality budget pencils.
The "Red Line" Classic F-C pencils are made in Brazil. Crayola colored pencils are made in Brazil by Faber Castell. The colors aren't exactly the same, but I think that they're either the same or very similar. I have full sets of Polychromos and Durer, but I'm always tempted to buy more!
Are Durer the watercolor pencils?
They are. The large size (Magnus) Durer pencils are my favorites to create with.
