I love videos like this, high level pencil nerding 😁 I have the 60 red classic and 36 Black Edition. love them both and use them now and then. Agree with them lacking the darker colors as so many color pencil sets do imo. The classic I've used as the first layers under Polychromos in coloring books. They are so easy to layout down large areas smoothly.
Your artwork is always fabulous regardless of supplies. Enjoyed the comparison. I still find the Gold Faber a fantastic pencil, but the Classic are a great substitute for Polychromos.
I had totally forgot how good the GoldFaber was until I used it in this fun test and when I applied it I was taken aback for a second. I definitely need to get them out more and use them. Often when I buy a product just to review, once I finish the review they either sit on the shelf, I give them away to you guys or I take them with some adult and kids colouring books to a women’s shelter for women who are victims of domestic abuse. Actually it is my wife and daughter who take them, I’m not allow to be there as a male presence can frighten some of the women and I totally respect that. It’s just a shame that some asshole monster has done that to a women, because not all men are monsters. I’m off on a tangent 😂😂 sorry.
Thank you for this comment this is what I’m trying to find a decent not too expensive pencil set that is close to polys of if I had the money I wouldn’t think twice about polys but here in the uk it’s gone crazy with money as Harry will tell you plus my hubby would have a blue fit if I spent that much on pencils lol thank you so much for this comment I’ve definitely made up my mind hope you have a lovely day 😊
@@sharonpaterson1281 so happy you found it helpful. Ali Hader has a lot of videos that use the classic and he often gives the Polychromos equivalent in videos that he is using Polychromos. You might want to check him out.
@@wanderingstar5673 thank you so much that’s great 😀 as were all on limited budgets I like to get as much as I can for the money I have to spend I only buy pencils every 5 years or so I’m actually treating myself because all the money I got given to me this Christmas went on bills so I thought I deserved a little something I’m disabled so I’m home most of the time so art and diamond painting keeps me sane hahaha thanks so much I’ll check the channel out now x
Hullo Harry, I always click the LIKE button! you do amazing work and just the shear effort of making a video deserves a like! IMHO! I did not get a single choice correct I picked the Poly's at number 3, the blacks at 4, Golds at 1, the Reds at 2. I will blame my monitor, but it could just be me! I know that a good artist can create a wonderful image with so so supplies. A great artist can create with poor supplies or any range of supply, great artworks! With digital corrections solutions people can even elevate poorer images into better images! This is why I have become more and more a person who wants the hold art in my hands or see it on a wall before judging it! Thanks for showing us the Faber pencils and just how good they and you are! Please just keep chugging along and creating your videos and lovely art! Thank You.
Thank you so much, that is my main aim of this channel, to save people money. I hope I can show them the art product in a detailed review, the next best thing to actually holding the product and testing it yourself. My wife and I know only too well what it’s like to struggle financially, but at the same time, we need to try and allow ourselves a treat from time to time and I can’t think of a better treat than art supplies. But it makes me so happy to know I have saved you a bit of money. Thank you so much.
Thanks for this review. Great fun and so clever to have all of them set against each other. I was rubbish at guessing, though! 😊 I don't use black paper so much, so I will stick to Polychromos and the classic red box. I am intrigued about the Goldfaber, though; I will get a small set to try.
Hooray for Harry & his amazing reviews! Fun test, but I know NOTHING about any Faber Castell pencils except the Pitt Pastel Pencils. I just got a small set of Polychomos & haven't even had time to use them yet. Still, I think 1= Red, 2 = Black, 3 = the Watercolors & Polychromos is the last.?? Now to go check my answer with the others! It's wonderful to see you back, I've been gone a couple of months & was so happy to see you had come back while I was away!
I got it right, just because the green is deeper in the Black & the watercolor pencils I've been using the lay down looks a bit dryer, like the colors in row three!
I don't know why RUclips has stopped notifying me about these videos :( I love this channel. Anyway, I haven't used most of these pencils but I'm going to guess 2/3 for the polychromos. I'm leaning toward 2.
Thank you Harry for an informative and unbiased review of these pencils, I have the Goldfabers and Poly's but not the other two. I like the Goldfabers and use them alongside Castle Arts and use them in my less expensive books and save my Poly's for my "best" books which deserve my "best" pencils. I got Goldfaber and Poly correctly but not the other two.
I bought the Black Edition and I really enjoy them, but they are 1000% made more for coloring on black paper, as i noticed when I did an average white page they started getting a little too "thick." Super neat and smooth, but to really get the best out of them you do have to use the right paper.
Hi Harry. I have both of these sets and love them both. Affordable pencils and good results in colouring books. I went for the name as I could not believe that FC would put their name on something that is not good. Great review hun. X x x
For Latinamerica Black Edition was named SuperSoft. They are good, soft and bright however the color tends to fade with time and looks dull although I guess it depends on the paper used. I like them but not as much as Goldfabers. I usually use SuperSoft mixed with Classic red box and work very well together. And of course, I love Polychromos.
Haha, I was completely wrong in my guesses but I do enjoy these 'can you guess the brand' brain teasers. I think they're quite fun. Thank you for comparing the child/student ranges of these pencils, and I also agree that FaberCastell does what they do quite well. I use their Pitt Artist Pens for marker pieces, watercolor and gouache, and now oil pastel. I also have the full set of the Polychromos and enjoy them with pan pastel works. Or alongside my Derwent Chromaflows, Prismacolors and Holbein pencils. FaberCastell products really are versatile once you get to know them.
I have the Faber Castell Eco Super Soft which are just round versions of the Black Edition. I was able to snag a 100 set on Amazon one day quite by chance. They are from Brazil and for budget they are good. I use them a lot when traveling because I don't want to lose my profession pencils. They work a lot like Holbein but they don't blend quite as well or take as many layers. They are so pretty and pigmented. I never use them on black paper but I rarely do anything other than mandalas on black paper.
I only had the 48 set of Goldfaber and I really like them but I felt like some colors were missing so I bought the 24 set of Black Edition so that I could at least have a pink and regular orange. The goldfabers don't include a pink or a regular orange only dark orange. Plus the dark edition has lots of other colors to compliment the Goldfabers.
Thanks for the video! I think 1 is classic red, 2 is the black edition ( in the states we have black edition ( 50 max ) and eco super soft ( 100 max ) and it is my understanding same core but barrels are hex vs triangle ) 3 is goldfaber and 4 is polys. I only have polys and goldfaber ( dont care for goldfaber ). Just my thoughts and 2cw.
Just wanted to add that in the "original" version of the black Edition (the south American supersoft), the Artwork on the 100 box is actually more muted, and really does look like made with the pencils 😅 Still my favorite pencils so far uvu
I feel that the Classic Red edition is marketed for kids. As such, how do you think they would compare to Crayola or Brutfuners (as they are similarly priced here in the U.S.)?
I definite feel the Faber Castell Classic Red Edition is quite a lot better than Crayola, as for the Brutfuners, it depends which set? Given how inexpensive they are I think they are a fantastic set of pencils. Also don’t worry too much about the demographic a product is marketed to, its more about whether or not if you will enjoy the product and my personal take of the Faber Castell Classic Red is that they are a remarkable pencil considering their cost.
Hey there! Crayola is actually Faber Castell's second line! They are made in Brazil and is so freaking hard to find it in the country they're made! And when found it costs a kidney and an eye all together.
I like the look of both of them. I like the black edition just a little bit better though because of that vibrancy thing, but I wouldn’t kick either one of them out of bed for eating crackers.
4 is definitely Polychromos! Harry, I was wondering if you could check with the companies if the products you review are vegan friendly? It would be such valuable info.
I believe nearly all the faber Castell products are Vegan friendly. There's a few sites you can check, like vegan art stuff and world of vegan have lists.
I will definitely include that information in my reviews going forward. In fact I will add it to the written review of this particular review today and make a start on the older reviews this weekend.

Yes, they do! You have to store them in an air sealed box or bag to prevent that. Dust, air, temperature, and moisture can “degrade them” over time. Also don’t let the pencils in direct sunlight.

Of course I completely agree, that’s why I stated these are the age groups the companies aim them at but they are most certainly not exclusive to those ages brackets. But you are absolutely right, as with so many things in life, there are many variables involved and every individual is different. My wife is an early years practitioner and Child Psychologist. I know not every child is going to love art, but I think they should be given a chance to try art with good supplies that give them that instant gratification of Color on the paper. Kids need stimulation from the get go, if they are not stimulated because the products they are using require effort, they will put it down and walk away to something different. Like I said I made this very mistake with my kids before I got into art and I feel terrible about it, especially as my eldest daughter loves art and studied art A Level. She should have had better supplies as a young kid but because I thought £2.50 was extortionate for a set of 12 coloured pencils, she got cheap terrible supplies. The way the markers are advertised you would assume they would layer ontop of the paper. no they are the same as alcohal markers, they will essential darken the paper like a promarker or copic. if you can Polychromos are better quality, blend great and nice vibrant color, can layer ontop of any colored paper.
