  • I received a huge amount of requests from you guys to review these Arteza Expert Colored Pencils. As a result I contacted the company and was sent this 72 set, along with some other Arteza art supplies which I will be reviewing soon also.
    Please, whatever you do, do not be put off watching this review if you know how cheap these pencils are and thought as I did, that they would be below standard. This is absolutely not the case and I hope you watch this review to see just how wrong I was.
    I have also completed a speed drawing of an image I found on Pinterest using the Arteza Expert Colored Pencils. I wanted to demonstrate the type of work that can be created with inexpensive colored pencils.

    Donations
    I am not comfortable adding this to my site or RUclips channel. I receive many emails and messages asking me how people can help support The Art Gear Guide, mainly I think due to the fact that I purchase all of the supplies myself, except those sent directly from companies kind enough to do so. I have decided to add a donations button to my site, however, I feel the best way to add such a campaign is as follows, all donations made will be used to purchase art products for review, however, all products purchased using donated funds, after they have been reviewed, will be used as giveaways to subscribers of the RUclips Channel, the web site or any of the above social media platforms. This way I personally will not benefit from financial donations. I have set this channel and site up for my own enjoyment and not profitable gain. I feel with this support method, everyone wins but not in a financial.

    My Own Personal Art
    I would not exactly call myself an artist in the true sense of the word, however I absolutely love art as it has helped me immensely dealing with clinical depression due to my battle with constant chronic pain and disability. Follow the link to check out my own projects bit.ly/2qAa7BN
    Thank You
    Finally, thank you so much for all of your support, without all of you, this channel and The Art Gear Guide would simply not be the same.
    Thank you so much.

    This brand has been all over RUclips lately. I get very apprehensive about brands that suddenly flood social media platforms. Thank you for your honest and in depth reviews. I know I can trust you and because of that trust I now have a desire try out these pencils for myself. Cheers!

    I bought the watercolor pencils and they have the same colors as the colored pencils. I also had two pencils that had the same colors. I contacted them via Facebook messenger, and they got back to me within a couple of hours. They sent me the colors that were missing free of charge and free of postage. They also gave me 20% off of my next purchase. So contact them. They have a wonderful customer support. I love my watercolor pencils. I've also purchased gouache, I want to get started on that soon.

    Hello again, Harry! I pray this quick note finds you well and in good spirits! Just wanted to thank your for this review. Because of it I purchased by set of 72 from Amazon and they arrived today and I quickly put them through their paces! I absolutely love them! For the life of me I can't explain how I overlooked these before now. After using these I am going to permanently retire my Prismacolor set of 72! If it wasn't for this review I wouldn't be so happy right now! Thanks again for all you do and greetings from across the pond!

      Thank you so much and you are more than welcome, I replied to your other comment but I wanted to reply again to you and I would say as a thought not to retire the Prismacolor completely. I used the Arteza and Prismacolor together and they worked beautifully together, so keep them as there will be colours in one that you may not have in the other.
      I hope you don't think I am being too pushy or rude in suggesting this, please forgive me if you do. It is just, since spending the last two years testing and researching so many coloured pencils, I have come to the conclusion that with the right paper and pencils, there is no such thing as a bad pencil, especially when we are talking about artist, student and kids grade. I am not including the sets of 100 for £1 or the ones that come free with in kids magazines. Thank you so much for your feed back and wonderful comment.

      @@TheArtGearGuide Dear Harry! Right on, Mate! I too have discovered exactly what you mean in my short life being a Colorist. Although it pales in comparison to your bounty I now have at my Beck and call ten different sets of pencils accounting for over 650 pencils. All that being said, I always find I have to use several different sets to complete a picture for the precise reason you mentioned! Paper? Just now finding out that is another key to a great picture! Boy! The learning curve sure is steep! Thanks for being my "go-to-guy!" And my creative Guru!😇

    I bought this set a few weeks back. Haven't had time to color with them, due to health reasons. I too am pretty much home bound, so I depend on the telephone, Internet, and family. My art is my baby right now and without it to slow my brain down, I would be lost. Can't wait to get to this set and color with them. Your review was great and making me want to get to them as soon as possible. Thanks and God's blessings for you and future videos.

    Great review so far Harry! 😁 I'm about half way through the video, but I wanted to post this real quick. I actually contacted my person at arteza this morning and asked specifically about their lightfast rating. Here is the answer I got:
    + (1) excellent
    ++ (2) very good
    +++ (3) good
    I will be reviewing/trying these for wood & I received the 48 set. I will comment more at the end of watching... lol 😉

    • @DrawingWithFire
      @DrawingWithFire 6 лет назад +2

      Ok so all done now... lol 😃 I checked my set for the fuchsia to check the rating, but it isn't in the 48 set. I'm guessing based on other similar colors it probably is a 3 as you said. I'm curious, did you get a different response when asking arteza about their ratings? For my review, I'm going to be linking to this (your) video for the technical stuff as you have already done it. 😉 Mine is going to focusing on wood with a bit of comparison to another brand. I hope you are doing well my friend. Maybe we can talk tomorrow morning my time to catch up. I'm glad things have calmed for you. 🤗

      @TheArtGearGuide  6 лет назад +4

      Are you sure Val, they told Lindsay the Frugal Crafter the same as they told me that +++ was the highest and + the lowest. Otherwise it wouldn’t make sense for them to make the Lightfast rating on the pencils as they would be saying 40 out of 72 pencils are useless for Lightfast and only 12 good enough
      I automatically assumed it was 3 the highest and 1 the lowest but the only reason I asked them was because a subscriber asked me to check when I first put out the photo on instagram.

    • @DrawingWithFire
      @DrawingWithFire 6 лет назад +4

      The Art Gear Guide Harry this is a copy & paste of the response I received:
      "Yes,
      The "+++" symbols represent the lightfastness.
      "+ "-Excellent
      "++" -Very Good
      "+++" -Good"
      I will forward you the email I got so you can compare. I will send it now.

      Valarie Connell /DrawingWithFire when I asked, but I asked about the ranger of all their supplies, they said the higher the # the more lightfast but I think that is the case for their paints which I think are on the blue wool scale and the pencils are on the astm (American) scale with #1 being best. In any event I enjoy these!

    As always thank you for this awesome review! I love your reviews! So well done, all the info I need in my decision process for purchasing new art materials.. thank you for your expertise and honest reviews.. I purchased the Castle Art softcore colored pencils a few weeks ago despite not being able to find many reviews, I think they would make for an interesting review and demo. I am truly enjoying these pencils, I think you should check them out, I think they are a phenomenal budget friendly pencil set.. Anyway, during my search to find a Prismacolor Pencil (frustrated with splitting wood casings, excessive wax bloom, and low quality control) alternative I decided to purchase these, can't report my judgement yet because I am still anxiously awaiting the arrival of these pencils, so excited to see how I like them.

    Thank you for the review of the Arteza Colored Pencils, that I was able to catch today.
    Good review and I am so excited about these pencils, I have explored the Arteza website and they seem to have a great selection of what I use. Great review. I also recommend their watercolor pencils - an inexpensive way to get started with watercolor pencils, at a great price. They aren't Faber Castell or Caran D'Ache, but they are much better than many of the more expensive pencils and as a company, they are responsive to questions about their products.

    Thanks again Harry for another awesome review and loved your pomegranate it’s beautiful! I’ve been eyeing these since they came out and have been on the fence about getting them for a couple of reasons. One, is I’ve found most of the Amazon reviews are positive yes, but a majority of them when given items free tend to give great reviews even though they may not be so, unlike you, I learned the hard way and have been disappointed. The main reason honestly is that I need another set of pencils like I need another hole in my head. But alas, thanks to you, I’m now off to Amazon to get the 72 set, which btw they had on special for about $20 the other day so I can kick myself, but regardless I guess it’s better than a hole in my head right. Take care and happy creating!

      Michelle C I know this is very late in response to your post, but FYI, there is a (terrific, imho) free app called Fakespot that analyzes Amazon reviews and uses an algorithm to "spot" the fake ones. Fakespot then rates the quality of the reviews with a letter grade and scores them for reliability. In addition, you can update the analyses in real time to keep up with quality changes on Amazon items. I've been using it for a couple of years, and I've found it very useful. One glitch - it doesn't seem to work with the Amazon app on mobile devices - but that's easily solved by accessing Amazon via your browser. Hope this helps.

    These pencils and the company are wonderful to work with. I purchased the 72 set expert watercolor pencils last year, and am upgrading to the 120 set. Because they are so smooth, and layer well, I didn't see a need to get the expert color pencils, since the watercolor pencils work great wet or dry (I rambled there; sorry). I've had no problems with them, and yes, I am professional and sell my art regularly. Lightfastness and a medium's archival properties are EVERYTHING to me. I trust these. And, well ... that's what UV protective spray and glass are for; right? lol ... Thanks for the great review.

    Brilliant review, Harry! These look like they go down on the paper like Prismacolors. I found Prismacolor just too soft for my colouring style. Are they similar to that or harder?

  • @suewilkinson910
    @suewilkinson910 6 лет назад +7

    They sound like a better option for beginner colourists than the Staedtler Ergosoft. They are hard, very thin cores and don’t layer well. I follow The Art Spirits on YT. She’s an excellent colourist and rapidly becoming an excellent watercolourist too. She was sent someArteza goodies recently and reviewed the watercolour paints very favourably. She said the watercolour paper was OK, but not her favourite, but the paints were good. So the company is onto something. You can sell good quality stuff cheaply if you sell lots and lots of it. This seems to be their model.
    Good review, as always. I shall watch your pomegranates grow while I eat my breakfast in the morning 🍳🥓

    • @lshaaa

      Sue Wilkinson the staedtler ergosofts aren’t meant for artists, I just use them at school

    • @suewilkinson910
      @suewilkinson910 6 лет назад

      Isha I didn’t say they were for artists. But Ergosoft pencils are very popular in the adult colouring world because Johanna Basford promotes them. I’m saying these 72 Arteza would be much better for that market.

    • @capyboppy
      @capyboppy 6 лет назад

      Sue Wilkinson I have seen there seems to be pairings of companies with well known arts/designers. I noticed that with Johanna Basford and Staedler too. I’m sure as long as the artist is shown to be using the pencils/Supplies at least once, they can do this legally. I very much doubt Joanna uses them herself at home when there are so many others of much higher artist quality out there. In the same way famous people wear clothes or eat certain brands on adverts. As long as they are shown to be doing this in the eyes of the public, i.e. ‘as used by (name here)’; ‘as eaten/worn by.... etc, many people will be swayed by it as they think the celeb wears/uses/eats the item all the time, rather than just done for the ad. I remember seeing something along a ‘special Secret Garden’ pack of pencils ‘as used by Joanna Basford’. There was nothing different about the pencils other than the packaging. In my opinion, these sort of collaborations are done for the financial benefit of both parties.

    • @suewilkinson910
      @suewilkinson910 6 лет назад

      Of course they are. Johanna says she started using them in college through, which is quite likely. But having said all this, I still like the set I have because there are only 36 so I can keep them in a pencil case and I use them to take out on trips or holidays. I don't have to care about dropping them or loosing them. I rarely use them at home.

    Hi, great review, sorry only have time right now to watch the first half!! so apologies if you mention what I’m going to say later on ( and I’ll hopefully get to see the rest of it!) but I just wanted to mention my own personal opinion on these pencils. Got bombarded with their advertising and decided to get some product to try it out and initially was going to be just for my kids. Of course that was just my excuse!! 🤭I have only used them so far in a sketchbook and was really pleasantly surprised at how well they lay down and blend, especially for the price, as you say. They reminded me of Prismacolors. But one day I was working in my studio on a finished piece from the sketch I had made with them in a sketchbook ( Arteza too, btw, and I am happy with it too). I accidentally sprayed water over the sketch and when I went to blot it with kitchen roll, the pencils smudged, pretty badly. I didn’t expect that from non watersoluble pencils! On the whole they are good pencils, but still not as good as the bigger brand names out there, in my opinion anyway. But still a great and inexpensive way to get into the medium or give it a try for the first time.

      Firefly 451 I agree with you completely but I think at least they have been up front about that, all the prices they quote at the minute they state are slashed prices and along side the prices they have the recommended value as well, I just am not sure when the prices will go up. I would suggest that if people are interested in these pencils they get them while the prices are so low. Thank you so much for stopping by my channel thank you.

    I am the same very sceptical about products being touted all over. I did a lot of research about this product and decided to give them a try. I am a beginner and didn’t want to spend a whole lot of money and then have it sit in a drawer. These pencils are great and I have been so pleased with the purchase and really appreciate the way they can be used. Highly recommended for the person who doesn’t want to spend a fortune.

    I just checked out your artwork on your website and wanted to say a few things. 1. I have NO idea why you don't consider yourself an artist because your artwork is beautiful and inspiring! 2. Minor note: Your Corpse Bride is actually Nightmare Before Christmas. Lol. It's my husband's favorite movie, otherwise I wouldn't have known. And, 3. You are an inspiration! I do not know your whole story, and I just started watching your videos, but I do know enough to be amazed by you. You've found an incredibly passionate and beautiful way to cope, and I'm very grateful that you are sharing your experience with all things art. Thank you for doing what you do!

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  6 лет назад +5

      Thank you so much for your incredibly kind words. First of all I know about the corps bride thing lol, it is my daughter’s favourite movie or director and I just drew something from him and added the wrong title lol. This is also one of the reasons I don’t really consider myself an artist, more an illustrator or human photocopier lol, I just copy what I see, I don’t really have an original idea to paint or draw, except for the botanical stuff I do which I really enjoy.
      My background is a bit odd actually, I joined the British Army aged 16 as it was the only thing in the world I ever wanted to be, a soldier. I was a front line Infantry soldier in one of the finest regiments in the British Army but after 13 years service, I shattered my spine on operational tour and was no longer able to fulfil my role as an infantry soldier so was medically retired.
      I lost a lot of my mobility, suffer with chronic pain all day every day, take large amounts of pain relief and suffered with clinical depression PTSD. A lot of my depression PTSD was down to the level of pain, losing my job, going from an incredibly fit and healthy man to a man who needs help getting washed and putting my socks on, and a load of other things.
      But it was my eldest daughter about three years ago now who was studying art, said to me one day that I could use her art supplies if I wanted as it might help pass the day. I did this and never looked back. I watched loads of tutorials on RUclips, Craftsy and Virtual Instructor and just love every minute of art. I then got into doing reviews which I have got better at since first starting out but love doing them. Now I am here and it has helped me so much. My pain and disability is all the same, but mentally I am able to cope a bit better.
      Thank you so much for your very kind and generous comment and I so look forward to seeing lots more comments from you and hope you continue to enjoy the videos.

      The Art Gear Guide Your Story is heartbreaking and amazing at the same time. I, too, suffer from chronic pain but nowhere near your experience. I'm currently studying Psychology in school with a minor in Art Therapy as I've learned through my own experiences how healing art can be for a lot of people suffering from Depression. You truly are amazing, even if it doesn't seem like it to you. 😉
      Also, my husband calls himself a "human copier," too, and he does some of the most amazing things that I could never do! (I've tried. Lol) Please don't sell yourself short! There's a whole genre of art that focuses "copying" things!

    I love watching your reviews, and respect all your hard work you put into being able to give us the best information about the products. I do have a question. I recently purchased the Arteza colored pencils set and upon watching another video of blending comparisons with several pencils Arteza being one, they tried blending with a koi colorless blender which surprisingly blended it out. I had to see for myself and sure enough it got blended out, which left me suspicious, so I got some plan water and sure enough it blended it out so much I thought perhaps I accidentally purchased the watercolor pencils, but no. Now they didn’t blend out as good as higher quality watercolor pencils, like Albrecht dures, but still enough that it left me wondering what the make up of these pencils are or if I perhaps got a faulty batch. I did some experiments on other pencils I have both high end to budget regarding this issue but to much to get into on the comments. I was wondering what your thoughts were on this?

      Hi Priscella, I haven't tested this myself, nut I will do after reading your comment. I have heard from a lot of people about the fact that the Arteza Colored Pencils are water soluble. I am actually scheduled to talk to one of the Arteza reps on Monday and I will certainly ask them about this and if it has been intentional or an accident. I will absolutely get back to you on this matter.

    Hi, I am an artist and love to draw but am not a big fan of colored pencils because I can not get a soft smooth feel on paper like I can blend with pencil. • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  5 лет назад

      I personally wouldn’t recommend this set for portrait work and only because of the very limited portrait palette, I think to get the very best portrait work with coloured pencils, you should try Prismacolor Premier, they actually have a portrait set, I think it is 12 or 24, or a bit more expensive but much higher grade and if you plan on selling your work the Caran D’Ache Luminance would be the best option. With the Luminance you can buy individual pencils, you don’t have to buy the full set, find the pigments that suit what you want to do, of which there are many outstanding pigments for portraiture.
      Within the Faber Castell Polychromos line, there are also some wonderful pigments for portraiture. As you are a portrait artist, you will know the pigments that will serve you best and you can absolutely mix and match pencils from the Luminance, Polychromos and Prismacolor line.
      The reason however that I mentioned the two pencils is because they both have really soft cores and this can help with creating smooth blends. Hope this helps a bit.

    Harry, hell'o. I really enjoy your video's and your way of delivery. I have a question please. In another review I read where these pencils smell really bad. This type of strong smell leads me to think they could have some highly toxic chemicals in their makeup. Can you give your opinion since you have used them ? Thank you.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  6 лет назад

      Hi Barb, I personally cannot smell anything at all with them, I have just gone and opened the tin again as I have not used them in a few days and so if they did smell of anything I would notice it more now than when using them because of them being in the tin a few days as opposed to in the open air being used.
      I do know that Arteza with some of their products ensure they are good for vegans meaning no toxic materials would be used, however I am not 100% sure which products are in this category. I will however contact the person I deal with from Arteza and ask them, if there is any toxic materials in the pencils they will have to be honest and tell me but I really don’t think there is. I will get back to you as soon as they respond to my email. Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful.

      MaltLiquor45 Hi there mate, the Arteza and Prismacolor are quite similar. Prismacolor are definitely softer, but as you can see from this review, the Arteza pencils blend and layer just as well as Prismacolor. The Arteza are heavily pigmented, but I would say Obviously Prismacolor have a much larger colour selection. Also, as you quite rightly point out, Arteza and Prismacolor 72 sets are similarly priced. If you get the chance, the Marco Renior are also an soft pencil and really inexpensive. Also Koh-I-Noor Polycolor and Lyra are excellent pencils and both quite inexpensive.

      I don't have dark chocolate in my set either. Instead of that I got two Cocoa pencils. Bought it last week.

    They are OK. When you sharpen too sharp they break over and over again. And some colours I can’t get a super opaque colour either. 6/10

    My honest review these are good for coloring not for an actual art piece but that is me.

    I think you’ve overblown the quality of these pencils a bit yes they are nicely constructed & come in a nice tin but the quality of the pigment is a shade higher than Crayola but not as good as prismacolor Faber Castell upper range pencils but the price does reflect this so your not getting ripped off. To anybody thinking of buying these pencils keep your expectations in check. 👍

      Bernard Marlow I agree with you to a certain extent. When I review a budget grade product, I am comparing to other products in the same price bracket, in fact I try my level best not to even mention other products in my review videos and instead I have started doing videos dedicated to comparison of like for like products. It would be ludicrous for me to compare say these Arteza or the Luminance, there is very little like for like with the pencils other than form and that is probably about it.
      I will say this about them however and I even had to do a separate video proving my point. When I mixed the colors, yellow and blue to get green, in this video I done it off camera and just showed the results. Someone called me out saying that it was impossible to create colors like that by mixing pencils together, so I had to do a short video blending the pencils showing the real time results, to which the person was shocked.
      I really don’t think I need to keep anything in check as I don’t make recommendations either, I state how I personally find the product and then it is entirely up to you the viewer as to whether or not that product is right for you. This is why I create a written review as well where people can go across and click on images to enlarge so that they can inspect the pigment closely on the paper, or the pigments blended close up.
      Thank you so much for the advice, I will certainly give it some thought for future reviews

      The Art Gear Guide I’m really sorry for the ending of the comment I’ve read it back & it does sound like I’m telling you to keep your expectations in check. That comment was aimed at prospective buyers of said pencils. Sorry for any confusion caused.

    If this are made in China, Most likely they are from a company name Deli. They have a similar design artist grade colour pencils but with no info printed on the pencils. And the really look and feels like Polychromos knockoffs.
