    After a lifetime of floral designing I have recently decided to turn my attention back to my first love , drawing and colored pencils. I found you straight away and am so very happy with your thorough descriptions and reviews. I have been seeing these pencils on Amazon and was curious because of the price point . After watching you last night I picked up my first set of the metallics, which you haven’t reviewed yet, but I was too curious to wait. I am hoping I might be able to get the 120 set at some point as well. Thank you Harry. I truly like to listen and learn from you. As a side note, thank you for your messages of hope and positivity as well. This is so needed right now as the last two years have been so strange because of the pandemic. I find art an oasis in my life that I was really missing as I had been forced to retire due to health reasons. Without creativity, we are truly nothing.

    I'm glad you said something about comparing within the same price bracket. There's a lot of "It's not like (X brand that costs 3x as much) on RUclips. It can make some people think they're not coming at their art correct. There's a subtext of barrier to entry and it's not a fair comparison. I get a twitch when people do that.
    Until the lightfastness is known, they might not be used for work that will last for years but they can work for sketchbooks or maybe prints without worrying your wallet. And you might find a winner in the process. That's just what I've noticed as I've been trying get more information :)
    Also: Ooh, I see pigment names. Nice.

      The lightfast rating is very relative sometime especially on this price range . Some brand like Arteza say that all their products are lightfast but in reality they are not . I don't know if the difference in quality between these pencils and other student grade pencils is so big . Only if you buy Professional Artist Grade pencils you can be 100% sure that you buy a totally lightfast product .They are more expensive for this reason mainly . Even prismacolor that are the most used pencils are not very lightfast some colors are totally fugitive and the overall costruction quality is far worse than these and other cheaper pencils . I continue to use them because they are not ultra expensive and i love the softeness of the lead but polychromos , luminance, Kohinoor and tons of other brands are far better and sometime cheaper .
      I think these pencils are quite good for the price if they manage to give some kind of lightfast rating will be even better even if they have poor light resistance you will know how they will perform . The application look pretty smooth, they are very vibrant and the overall construction quality look pretty high . The only thing i don't like a lot is the colors selection maybe . Some grey and brown are more useful than tons of blue and green that look all pretty similar .

      @@firagamwich1864 I do realize lightfastness = higher price and security. I have some Koh I Noor Polycolors, just a 24 set. Love them. I have a couple of Polychromos and while they're really top notch, I can't justify the cost of a set at the moment since it's a hobby for me (I'd like to). I'm waiting for a sale to get more Fabers open stock since they work well with Polycolors and they have colors KIN doesn't.
      But I've seen a lot of reviews that don't take into account that a person might have a small budget and only want a decent, affordable option to hone their skills on, or they're a casual user. Paper and pressure applied don't get factored in either. People can always upgrade later if they want to start selling their work or displaying it at home. Sometimes you just have to wait for the good stuff.
      Keeping home/personal use in mind, I think a less expensive large set isn't a bad option to start with if the quality control is good. Many of the large budget sets have mixed reviews because one person will get a bad batch and another will say they're great. The annoyance of having to ship them back gives me pause. I've read that Castle Art has decent customer service which gives me more confidence.
      I did find a blog that did a light test on some budget pencils. With Castle Art the pinks faded pretty badly but that's the usual as far as I know. thecolouringtimes.com/lightfastness-test/
      I'm with you about grays and browns. When I see a review that says too many neutrals I look at that set even closer! Those colors are so handy! Thank you for the reply :)

      @@sasayaki Koh I Noor pencils are very high quality and the price is relatively low . They are also very lightfast .. I love them too . I mainly use a full set (120- 150 all the shades ) of faber castell Polychromos and prismacolors they are my favorite and i can buy them at good price in my country .. than so far so good . I have different sets from other brand too like caran d'ache , holbein etc but i end to use mainly Poly and prisma together .
      I think a beginner don't need such a big color selection . If you need to do a normal portrait and you have high quality pencils that blend very well together a set of 12 colors can be enough . I think at the end is a matter of tastes .
      Ty for the lightfast test btw at least we can understand better how they perform . Like i already through they are not so bad . All the purple and violet are fugitive but it's normal especially in this price range ... The other shades look good . They perform far better than Arteza and even more than some expensive brand i tested myself in the past not bad for this price .

      I like the expensive stuff and won't buy anything but the artist grade. But that's me and my desire. I do love that there are so many brands out there of a good quality that don't cost a fortune that I can recommend to my friends who want to do some colour work but either can't or don't want to spend the bank on the Holbeins of the world, for example.

      Fira Gamwich ~. I enjoy Prismacolor premier pencils but to be completely honest they are overpriced. Made in Mexico with dodgy casings and many fun but fugitive colors. For the price they should be professional quality all around and perfect casing every time.
      They are fun but overpriced.

    I am not a professional, just a hobby (I work in a different art form) but I began with store brand pencils and have worked my way up to this 120 box of Castle. The difference is huge. I know there are much more expensive brands but for me these were pricy. Then I found someone On ebay selling a new case for $42. They are so wonderful to use!

    I agree 💯% on the sharpening aspect. The wood is so soft and rough that I've found it breaks the lead in various hand sharpeners, just like the one you used. That is also my only nit as the balance of the pencil is great and the color goes down well. Good value.

    I had a set a few years ago and didn't like that they had no name or number. I had no real problem with the pencils. I like the customer support and the reaching out to you. I just bought a set of KingArt and they are so much like the older Castle Art I had but with numbers and colors - don't know if they are "related". Nice to see a pencil company upping their games. Great review. I see that they make gel pens - I'm on a gel pen kick so going to check those out.

    I also have many coloured pencils from various good brands. Very often I compared my impression with the impression you have of the coloured pencils. Since I almost always come to the same conclusion as you, I have now bought 120 pens from Castle Art without buying trial sets beforehand. And you were right again. They are really very good. They have a wonderful range of colors. They lay down like butter. The paints of the coloured pencils melt on the paper and can be blended very well. I'm really happy. Castle Art should thank you - big smiley from me. And foremost: a big thank you to you.

    I love the color selection of these pencils, 'cause I'm a big fan of blues, purples and greens and not a fan of browns. I use browns and greys very rarely. I just wonder how soft they are because I have an ill and weak hand and it is really important to me to have as soft pencils as possible. Prismacolors are horribly expensive in my country.

      Thank you so much for your comment and support, I am sorry to hear about the issues that you suffer with. Another pencil that you might find easy to work with are the Marco Renior, they are a budget range of pencils, I they come in a 100 set, in fact I reviewed them a while ago bit.ly/2fZJJJs which you can see by clicking the link. I might do another review of them as it was quite a long time ago when I completed the review and my equipment has improved quite considerably since then. Nevertheless, my opinion of the actual pencils is still the same, they are an incredibly soft core, they are not lightfast or anything like that, they wouldn't be any good for commissions etc but for your own enjoyment, adult colouring books etc, they are excellent and especially given your issues they will help.
      I hope this has helped you out and thank you so much for your support.

    Hi Harry! I'm back, just wanted to let you know, Castle has a set of 120 and 72 oil pencils now (called Gold Standard, I'm sure in direct response to Star-Joy,. but I'm not into the Pencil Marketing Wars especially when they're made in China which both of them are lol). Currently both sets are sold out on their site but the 72 set is available for pre-order on Amazon US. Way overpriced for a budget set in my opinion, but I'm sure that will change over time. They also have out a set of pastel shades, very pretty and very nice to work with. There hasn't been a lot of marketing around these new sets, I feel like it's a soft premiere but keep your eyes open.

    My daughter bought me a 72 wallet set for Xmas. I found them quite comparable to Coloursoft. I was going to try the 120 set as I was pretty impressed with them and price makes them ideal for practice. It would be enormously helpful if Castle were to consider open stock some time in the future. I love your 'no nonsense' reviews by the way.

    I've been looking at these for a week or so on amazon, trying to decide between the 72 and the 120. I just want to find a set to get back in practice with that blends and layers well but doesn't break on me so often, my hands are a bit clenchy at times due to health issues.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  4 года назад +2

      Hi there, first of sorry to hear you are suffering with health issues, no matter what it is, it is terrible having a hinderance on your life that prevents us from living our lives the way we went. When you say clenchy do you mean you sometimes develop a tight grip on the pencil and perhaps add extra unwanted pressure?
      If this the case, the Castle Arts would be quite beneficial. As I mentioned in the review, although they blend and layer like a softer cited pencil, their core isn’t actually as soft as you might expect. I’ve used the Castle pencils even more now since the review and still no breakages. However don’t be buying a set just yet if you can. I am announcing the winner of the brand new 120 set on the 10th of March so you just never know. Thank you so much for your wonderful comment and for stopping by the channel and I wish you all the luck in the world for the draw.

    I've been watching several reviews of the Castle Art pencils and so far they seem to be of good quality and competitive with Arteza, but perhaps not as good as Primacolor.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  3 года назад

      The Castle Arts pencils are really nice pencils but they are definitely not as soft as Prismacolor. I think for me personally, of all the pencils I have reviewed thus far, of the top of my head, the pencil that is similar to Prismacolor with regards to the softness is a pencil called Giotto by Lyra, but the biggest problem is that they only come in the largest set of 36, but the pencil itself is gorgeous. This is my review of them bit.ly/2Bd10ux

    • @mchobbit2951

      @@TheArtGearGuide The Giotto Stilnovo is basically the same thing but marketed at children and with cheap packaging. They do come in a larger set of 50 which is less than many people are used to but enough to get around (I think). My favourite budget pencils by far, and you can't beat the price.

    I bought these nine months ago from Amazon US under the name Castle Art Supplies. Initially, I really loved them and considered them the best in the budget-friendly class. But I find I don't use them very much any more because my set does not have color names on the barrel. This is such a hassle for me, especially when I've got a bunch of pencils out with similar shades and I have to constantly refer to my swatch chart to make sure I grab the right color. I just can't relate to the numbers. For $35, I recently bought the Creyart set of 120, which have nearly identical barrels as the Castle Art, but have color names as well as numbers and have a slightly more oil-based feel, which enables more gradual layering. The color range is different, more pinks, purples, light blues...and the colors work together much better than Castle Art. So now I love the Creyarts way better! A chart of color names listed by number for the Castle Art pencils would help rescue them. If I could label them I might use them more, but I could not find a color chart on their website.

    • @sasayaki
      @sasayaki 4 года назад

      I emailed them for a color chart and got it last night. I was thinking about buying them or the Creyart and wanted to see the full range. They said their email system was having issues but they still got back to me about it.

    Hi, need advice,I am new to adult colouring, with with limited finance,, what would you suggest I buy to start with, Do I need to have both of Castle’s ordinary colouring and there watercolour pencils. Or do I just buy the 120 pencil set.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  4 года назад +1

      Hi Alan mate, I would just got with the Castle Art Colored Pencils to start with. But it is also important that you use a good quality paper to get started with as well. If you use printer paper you will not be happy with the results of the pencils and maybe lose faith.
      If you are sticking to adult colouring, the Castle Art Pencils are perfect and the vast majority of adult colouring books now days really does take into consideration the quality of paper. But if you decide to do a bit of your own art as well. I would recommend a Bristol Velum paper or a Hot Pressed Watercolor paper. There are so many different brands but if you want more help with brands and where to go I would be more than happy to help, but for now I hope this helps you out a bit.

Can these numbers be correlated between brands? For example, floss has the DMC code, and acrylic paints all have the same names (not sure if they have a code). Is this the case with colored pencils?

    Very good review. I have been thinking of trying them. Is there a light fastness?

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  3 года назад +1

      Hi Cheri, No there is no lightfast ratings for Castle Arts pencils. You tend to find that a lot of budget range art supplies don’t have any lightfast results, the reason for this is due to the cost.
      When a company has their product properly lightfast tested under either the ASTM or Blue Wool standards they have to pay huge amounts of money for the process. So the cost to the company to have their product lightfast tested is reflected in the cost we pay for the product, hence paying £170 for 76 Luminance as opposed to £40 for 120 Castle Arts Pencils.
      Very few pencil sets are reasonably priced and lightfast tested in fact of the top of my head the only pencils I can think of is the Koh-I-Noor Polycolor and the Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor; I could be wrong I’d have to do more research but of all the pencils I’ve reviewed they are the only two I can think of. Thank you so much for stopping by the channel I really appreciate and I hope I’ve answered your question.
