Castle art supplies have EXCELLENT customer service!
After watching a number of reviews on RUclips about Castle art supplies, I decided to purchase their 120 colouring pencil set from Amazon UK, mainly due to them being in a sale and being reduced from £39.00 to £23.00 including postage and packaging!
When they arrived, I couldn't wait to try them out, and I was very impressed with their quality. The pencils where fantastic until I got to the bottom layer, no matter how carefully I sharpened them, they kept breaking! This only seemed to happen to the pencils in the bottom tray, and the middle and top tray where all fine. Personally I believe that they had been dropped during the delivery process?
I sent Castle art supplies an email, and they got back to me within two hours of receiving my message! Not only did they replace the set of pencils, but they also told me to keep my original purchase also!
All in all I think Castle art supplies offer fantastic value for money, and their customer service is second to none. I just hope that other art supply companies take a leaf out of Castle's book!
I will definitely be buying from them again in the future 👍.

Hi Sheldon, no you don't get any colour chart. On the set of 120 they have numbers on each pencil, but unfortunately they don't sell the pencils individually at present, so I don't see the point in doing so! But I do believe that they are planning to sell them separately in the future.
All in all they are good value for money, the only drawback is buying pencils on line, which may NOT be handled with CARE in the delivery process!!!
That's why my set had all been damaged in the bottom tray, I believe they had been dropped because no matter how carefully I sharpened them, they kept breaking!
But like I said, Castle art supplies told me to keep the pencils and they sent me a new set.

Castle Art is an amazing art supply company! I have several of their media, and their oil colored pencils glide on paper like a hot knife through butter. My experience with them has been excellent A1 rated customer service, and their packaging is high quality, with extensive information about the company, products in their line of several different media źjjjrrrc, how to use their products, and even professional artist tips and tutorials.
I also think that Castle Art is an excellent, young company that we are going to see big and exciting things from in the near future!!

When I first bought the pencils I got an email from Castle Art Supplies (CAS) asking me to review them, then shortly after got another email. Since I had also gotten reminders from Amazon, it felt like a bit much. I sent an email to CAS saying “ Hey, I just got these, can you give me a little time to use them before asking for my review ?!”. I was so impressed when I heard back from them immediately, apologizing for the ‘nuisance’ and asking me if I had suggestions for how to improve their process. Not much I won’t overlook when a company is sincerely responsive to their customers. I hope they get the support for their products.

FYI: The pens are now $27.99 and pencils are $27.99 currently (12/2019) on Amazon.Well worth the price. The set of 72 color pencils has color numbers and names on each pencil and the set of 120 has the color numbers only along with a chart with the names for each number. So, it seems Castle Arts really takes to heart people's comments and concerns. Amazing as most companies don't bother or care about their customers (take Prisma for example)

According to the video: The Average Artist
Published on Oct 4, 2017, the reasoning behind the "odd" way the color pencils are in the trays is that each tray represents a group of colors: warm colors, cool colors, and pastels. After seeing this video, I was so glad I didn't re-group my color pencils, as I usually do, because it is nice to have the colors displayed this way and easy to choose from according to each different group. Also, it was a real pain, but I put numbers on each pencil before I swatched them out.

I like to organize them by style but also by color. For example, the style will go in order like classic, glitter, metallic, neon, pastel, and rainbow and each style will be organized by color in order like red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and then I will continue the order with pink, brown, gray, white, and black. I'm sorry if that sounds confusing but that is how I like to organize my gel pens.

Gel pens are my medium of choice. The one thing, you never have enough of, are earth tones. More shades of browns, reds, yellows and oranges. I did come across a set of earth tone pens on amazon, it's 20 colors, with 20 refills for $15. It would be interesting to see if Castle Art would consider jumping into this untapped market. Thank you so much, for the time you spend on gel pens, nearly all RUclips artists are all about colored pencil and markers.

11/2020 Colour names and numbers are now on all the pencils and both the 72 and 120 sets are available now in either tins or already in a zip up case. In the UK, the 120 set was only £2.00 extra already in the case, with the Castle Art logo on it for easy identification. Empty case prices start at around £10.00!
Does anyone know the reason why is it considered correct to turn the sharpener round the pencil rather than turning the pencil and holding the sharpener still? It would never have occurred to me to do it that way because the sharpener itself doesn't lend itself to being turned (as you inadvertently demonstrated when you lost your grip on it) but more importantly I like to be able to see the pencil so I can stop sharpening the moment the point is as I want it. As the pencil tip is a snug fit in the cone of the sharpener, I can't understand how it can make any difference which one moves and which is stationary.

You indicated that the color pencils lack layer ability. Seriously? I guess they may have for the older pencils you have. But I can tell you the current pencils (end of 2019) layer extremely well. I have some work that has quite a few layers and when I use with Gamsol I can layer even more. I have some work that has at least 10 layers using these pencils.

Just a tip I glue a 1/2"-3/4" ribbon on the trays just underneath the finger grip areas or if no finger grip areas just in the center of each side (left & right or top & bottom your choice) of the plastic tray that lay over top of the pencils just enough that I can use the ribbon to lift out the trays. That's just if I like the tins they come in and intend on leaving them in the tin.

When I use Castle Arts color pencils I don't get lines as you did on your color pencil paper. I get a nice smooth look that mimics that of paint. I don't know why yours looks like a ton of short straight lines with no gradual blending of any kind. Yours looks harsh and mine never looks that way and neither does any other example of these pencils I have seen online. That's odd your looks that way. Did you do that on purpose? For an effect of some sort? Yes, they are very vibrant but they are also very smooth and lay down very well. Testing them alongside Prismas, I found Castle Arts to be smoother, more vibrant without all the common Prisma issues that are typical with the current manufacturer.

Don't know if anyone shared how to get bubbles out. I take the ink cartridge out of the pen housing and blow on the end until it moves, sometimes you need to do this a few times and scribble in between. Ever have the ink not flow but you know it's there and not dry. The ball point on the end comes off also. Carefully remove it and clean out the point sometimes its just a clot. Nurse tricks but the work in this application as well.

Castle art pencils are the exact same pencil as Colore and a few other brands, the only difference is color choice. colore has been around much longer.
The grading they use means nothing to an actual artist, it's not CPSA certified not are they tested for light fastness. It's merely a rating the manufacturer uses.
The wood is bass wood. Cheap wood used in colored pencils.
Here's what they did not tell you, they do not manufacture these, China brand pencils from Amazon are all made in the same way, a company in China makes them and sells them to any seller willing to buy in bulk. They have 120 colors available to buyers, they buyers pick 72 colors. The 120 set was in production for all buyers as if January but I have yet to see them.
Overall great pencils. If you are looking for the oil and watercolor versions look for the Colore brand.

Oh Jen, you're never mean! I actually unsubscribed to an artist once because she made a comment that the art in a certain coloring book was "ugly", which offended me because no one knows what an artist has put into a drawing and art is subjective. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but even if we don't like something, we don't need to be rude, mean or nasty. We can simply say, "I don't particularly like it."
The pencils your viewer was referring to when she asked if you have reviewed them are Schpirrer Farben brand. They seem to be quite popular. I think they're priced in the mid-range. A lot of colorists seem to like them, but I haven't tried them yet.
I appreciate your honest, tactful reviews and opinions and find that I agree with you quite often. You have a lovely personality and family and Rosie is just precious!
Thank you, Jennifer, for your dedication to the art and coloring community. You are very much appreciated!
    Stay Blessed!

When I watched this video today I didn't realize that it was 3 years old. So, you will probably never see this, but just in case, I want to tell you how much I appreciated not hearing all the cloyingly sweet repetitive "greetings" that most presenters seem to feel obligated to destroy their live videos with. It has got to the point that if I notice a video is labeled "live", I just skip it. I don't want to hear, "Hi soandso, hello whatsyourface" etc., etc, every couple seconds. It is an interruption that is of no interest to anyone except, perhaps, the person who gets to hear their name read out loud. I truly hate it.
You seemed satisfied just saying "Hello Everyone" and getting on with it. Thank you!

I just found you a few of weeks ago & LOVE your reviews! I'll have to try the Castle Art supplies! As for the bubbles in the gel pens, you can use a piece of thin wire, or even a small, unfolded paperclip, take the pen apart, put the wire into the shaft at the back of the pen, and move it around, like stirring, and tap it on the edge of a table or other hard surface until the ink drops down. It can sometimes take a bit of banging it around &/or stirring with the wire, but it can get a bubble out! ;)
Any idea how to reconstitute very old gel pens! (I have some 20+ year-old pens that were put away, and about half of them have quite a bit of ink in them, so I'd LOVE to get them back, even though I did buy refills!)
The Sakura pens have some made to draw on black, and others that are not, thus some that don't, and those go well on white paper & light colored papers.
I LOVE the gel pens that write well on black & I agree totally... I'd rather have an ink blop than a pen that doesn't work, skips, gets stuck, dry, etc.!!!
And running out of silver, gold, light blue, that "weird green", etc. is a real bummer!!!
I've had to go buy a set of Sakura metallic pens when some ran out, and I bought an extra silver & white, yet would've been happier if I could buy metallic colors in open stock, so maybe Castle will do that???
My guess is that they also have some that will write on black, and some that do not???
At their prices, it might be worth a try, although I did just buy some refills for mine for $5 on Ali Express, and have a list of goodies I want, so not exactly on the top of my list, but I would like to try the ones that write on black especially, and many of the ones I got do, so I may still get some to try if they have a set that all write on black especially.
I too had a gel pen leak, it WAS a mess, even on it's side.
As for colored pencils, I would LOVE to have a really good set of watercolor colored pencils! I've tried many, and I really like the Stabilos, Faber-Castell & some really nice (& not so pricey) watercolor pencils by Royal-Langnickel I like a lot! They aren't talked about that much, but Royal-Langnickel has been around for a long, long time & also make some incredible paints (watercolor, acrylics, oils & very nice brushes, some OK pastels & good sketching pencils, canvas panels, and kits in pretty good wood boxes with drawers for storage & a table top easel too.
    Thank you for the review.

My dream line of gel pens:
    **Refills would be available!!!
**Related groups of pens would be simply in plastic, or blister package (Rather than some fancy thing with snaps and flaps or stupid stadium stands that don't work and you still won't want to keep and will feel bad about having to throw out because what else can you do with the damn thing?)
**Each type/group of gel pen in its own package so you can separately buy either metallic, or pastel, or glitter, or a combo of types. This way you'd know if the pen in your hand is a glitter or super special glitter or a non-glitter because it would say so on the bag.
**Refills for each pen type packaged separately by group, so you can grab a new pack of metallic refills without having to get ALL those other Refills you don't want (like the pastels...why do they even make those?) Or you could buy multiples of refill packs for the pen type you use a lot. I LUV metalic ink and would buy lots of packs of metalic refills, but the pastel can stay in the store.
**Numbers of the pens (for refill purpose) would be on the barrel of the pen itself...NOT ON THE CAP!
**AND, it would be very nice to have info about each pen, even if not written on the pen itself. Like, they have a little list on the packaging, or info on a website that says, pen number 73 is a Neon Glitter, and is an apple green.
I know gelly roll does this, but they don't have refills...but they last forever though. By the time I used up a few gelly rolls, I'd lost the cap and cracked the barrel and worn the lettering off of it.

I know this is an old review, but it's about the fluorescent inks. Have you shined a black light on the ink, too make sure they're your fluorescent colors? You should start doing it with all mediums that say they are fluorescent or neon.

Looking at them, they very much remind me of the Derwent Coloursoft pencils (one of my favourites).

Nooooooooo! I missed the CAS CP live video?!! Drat that quality time with my husband, swatching colored pencils while watching tv, and NOT checking my YT notifications (even through I had a sneaking suspicion I should!). 😢😢😢 I have been hoping for you to try these FOREVER - like 3 months 😉! I shall continue to watch the video then comment again, since I have been using these for months and am sure to want to chime in 😁

Thanks for your review. The good news is, as of today, January 4, 2021 the description boasts color name and number now on the pencils, bad news is they have increased to 39.95 on Amazon! The price isn't all that high but I just ordered a 72 count tin of Prismacolor Premier pencils for 34.95 today,so, in comparison not the best value.

I was thinking of buying these, but since the review, Castle Arts may have made some changes to their product. For example, they now have names and numbers on the pencils. The 120 set has been out, and while I was looking on Amazon, I saw that they came out with "themed" pencil sets of 24 (for example--colors inspired by Van Gogh).

I always price compare between the Castle Arts website and Amazon, and 9 times out of 10, the company website has a much better price. For instance, at this moment (January 2022), Amazon has the 120ct set of colored pencils in the tin for $54.99, but on the CAS website, they’re on sale for $29.99!! They are always running really good sales, too. I adore their pencils and use them quite often, so I’ve purchased 3 tins of the 120ct pencils. Also want to try some of their other products, including the new oil based colored pencils they’ve recently come out with.

Hey Jennifer I want to thank you for your review on castle art supply. Because of your review I decided to try their watercolor brush pens. The first batch were dry and having issues. Contacted them and they sent out a replacement quickly and they were much better. I can't wait to try more of their products!

I was very interested in seeing this review because I've seen the Castle colored pencils pop up in online searches, and the price is very tempting, but I didn't know anything about them. I may have taken a chance and ordered them, but a huge problem for me is the color selection. I do wildlife art and the 72 pencil set is critically lacking in browns. Since most wildlife is in a range of brown coloration, that made the set almost useless to me. I was so sad after I read your review and found out they were actually good pencils. If you are still in contact with the manufacturer, maybe you could pass on this information.

Sorry, I just saw this. Do they run out of ink quickly? I realized that before when I used one of those pens. But they look so fun. I really prefer top push pens though. And I love your duo cam setup.

Today is 12-15-2018 and I came directly to you to check if you have any review of these gel pens. If you approve them I will lollllll. I bought a set just now. However, I want to ask you have you tried the COLORIT? They are mega FANTASTIC. Why I bought different ones cause testing is what makes you establish comparison and makes you learn too. I’m happy to watch your videos. Thank you for share 😉😉😉😉😉

I heard your dislike for the Amazon brand because it can eat up smaller indie companies, however we live in a competitive world, and that creates products that benefit consumers. Each brand has a niche and must compete within that niche, that results in us consumers getting better products for less money. How is that bad?

Do you have any color pencil work that you have done? I love your reviews as we get to see somewhat how the different products behave. However, I wonder if you could show some of your work so we can better judge if the effects and tests you do are due more to the product or to your methods. I have watched a few reviews and I can't help but wonder if talent doesn't play a role in some of the coloring and the looks of the coloring examples you do.
