  • Composed by Richard D. James (Aphex Twin), 'aisatsana' is a Satie-esque piano piece inviting stillness and careful listening to one's surroundings. This mechanical and acoustic reproduction of 'aisatsana' uses a 100-year-old player piano to play a custom-made roll of the piece. Set in Hadden Park, the piano is recorded alongside visiting starlings and crows in the canopy above, creating a "live" version of the bird song heard in Aphex Twin's original version on the 2014 'Syro' album. An homage to Richard's signature blurring of the acoustic, electronic, and automatic, the meeting of the programmed player piano and the park's incidental soundscape invites one to reflect on notions of soundscape composition, 'liveness', and automation.
‘aisatsana’ is the closing track from Aphex Twin • Syro released 22 September 2014 on Warp Records.

This is a really appropriate way to cover this song. Even the birds perform!

not sure why people are complaining about the piano being out of tune, i think it adds to it.

Used to have a piano like this in the house I grew up in. Don't think it had the auto-play function this has (or at least we never used it), but in any case it was forever wonky and slightly out of tune, sorta like this is. Hearing an Aphex track from it certainly evokes some emotions.

I'm sure that somehow Satie would have found drum machines and sequencers very interesting.

I have no words. This is absolutely amazing! I love how it's being field recorded, just like the song. I like how the piano is a little off-tune and in the tiniest bit slower than the original. It definitely sounds like it's being played on a 100 yr old piano. To my fullest extent, I would say...it's a MASTERPIECE! Aphex Twin da 🐐, no 🧢.

Gorgeous. It's a shame the piano is so badly out of tune; the wonkiness adds a little colour, but there are parts in the higher register that really jar.

Can you recommend similar pieces to this? It does actually remind me of Satie, even Chopin's Nocturnes, somewhat. The mood this evokes for me is reminiscent of "A Raincoat's Room" by Swell Maps. Melancholic, minimal, slightly harrowing, yet objectively beautiful and gentle simultaneously.
