this is like when you're doing something with your friends. chilling out and watching a sunset, having conversations around a bench with a couple people sitting on their bikes, etc. and you just have this thought of "this is it, it doesn't get any better than this." and you have this sense of nostalgia for something that's already happening. this is it, this is the good old days, and you're living them right now.
And all at once, you all go silent and stare out into the sky, and just for a moment nothing could be more perfect.
Man, these comments are fucking me up.
On the roof of your car with the stars
the one thing that truly makes me sad is that i'm missing out on these feelings and moments. i've had them in the past, but am now left with no friends...
@@Djellowman I'm sorry to hear that, Tim. How did it become that way?
I am an old man now but I still very much miss my friends that died in their teens. I come here to remember some of the times that we spent together. Forever young Scott, Joe, and John. Growing up in the suburbs wasn't so easy after all. See you guys on the flip side.
hey, i come back to this video every once in a while and i always end up reading your comment every time. i'm sorry for your losses. i hope all is well with you, wishing you the best
How did they die of?
@Ryan Plethra hi. I read through your entire comment. thank you for sharing your memories and your emotions. its hard to know what to tell you because i've never really went through any of that, i was never really someone who had that many friends or who enjoyed going out and meeting new people or any of that stuff, I always just kind of liked being on my own. i guess that probably kept me from having so many of those memories. different ways of living lives i guess. i'm really sorry about all that stuff that happened to you, although I can't fully comprehend exactly what you're feeling i really am fully aware of how deeply stuff like that can affect you. i don't know you but i'd bet you're a really nice genuine person. that's what it seemed like to me anyway. you spent all that time writing that comment and it was all about other people, you didn't really make it about yourself. that's as unselfish as it gets. that's worth more than i'm really able to explain to you. really hoping you feel better. the pain may never go away but you can make it a smaller part of yourself by continuing to live your life and creating new memories and just doing your own thing. that's how i see things anyway. try not to give yourself such a hard time thinking about the past, nothing's ever as important as right now. enjoy yourself out there. i wish you all the best, i really mean it, take good care of yourself

I still don't understand why this video does what it does - but it does.
"Hey! How exactly is a rainbow made? How exactly does a sun set? How exactly does a posi-trac rear-end on a Plymouth work? It just does."
Because Aphex Twin is a genius and someone made a more accessible instrumentation of his piece, Rhubarb.
C Meade it’s more than that, it’s this whole thing out together. It’s incredibly haunting. I agree with the OP. Just my opinion.

It is cool.
how did you find that out?
I need to go to that place sometime, and listen to this song with a beer...
Young guys in the prime of their life, no urgent destination to go to, just hanging out and having fun. The ill fitting suits and anarchic act of drinking alcohol on a rooftop perfectly display adolescence to adulthood.
Those days will come to an end soon, and the sunset in the background seems analogous to this, a sense of foreboding regarding the fleeting period of youth, all underscored by the fact that this video was uploaded a decade ago and, in all probability, its end has come to fruition.
It captures the melancholic feeling of lost years wonderfully. You can never go back.
best comment of the video. i felt every word
you can never... go back... so true
but guess what, God loves you so much, he sent his one and only son Jesus Christ tomake a way for you, so you can go to heaven. where feelings evaporate and the childhood dreams come back in different form. Amen.

The man of Tao acts without impediment,
He harms no other being by his actions,
Yet he does not know himself
to be kind and gentle.
He does not struggle to make money
And he does not make a virtue of poverty.
He goes without relying on others,
And does not pride himself
on walking alone.
The man of Tao remains unknown.
Perfect virtue produces nothing.
No Self is True Self.
And the greatest man is nobody.
Jesus Herenadez Taoism is the most innocent and humane teaching I’ve ever come across. “The greatest man is nobody”. What an incredible amount of love you must feel yourself to be a nobody in this world, realizing your effect in this universe is just as powerful as the person breaking his back at 6 in the morning doing landscaping, or the lawyer that never sees his family because of his incredibly intense schedule and devoting to duty. The universe may be indifferent to us but it certainty treats us like the absolute equals we are. Energy and love that has no meaning or reason, is what we all are, with the universe as one of our mothers.
I was literally reading the Tao Te Ching 5 minutes ago. Glad to see someone felt the same with this song and the Tao.
Dig it
“The Master gives himself up
to whatever the moment brings.
He knows that he is going to die,
and he has nothing left to hold on to:
no illusions in his mind,
no resistances in his body.
He doesn't think about his actions;
they flow from the core of his being.
He holds nothing back from life;
therefore he is ready for death,
as a man is ready for sleep
after a good day's work.”
Taoism is such a chill philosophy.
I would love to see a tao person or a buddhist monk working and in living somewhere like london as a bin man or something on rubbish wages waking up at 5am on a freezing cold january morning wearing his hi visiblity uniform. paying £1500 pound rent for a shity flat whilst only earning £2000 a month. Do you think he would be peaceful still? do you think if the londoner whos actually working in that job swapped positions with the monk who would be happier? The monk has no idea how shit it is losing or your youthful innocence working a dead end job he would actually think hes in the gulags or in a nightmare, whilst the binman would be loving his new peaceful life thinking hes in a dream.
Man those evenings with good friends.. growing up sucks sometimes

Funny how minimalistic notes and a video with little to no embellishment can merge together into something stellar. It's a cheesy thing to say but Richard James really is the most underrated musician of our time.
***** He's well known but if you ask any random person in the street I doubt they've heard on RDJ or Aphex Twin.
overrated* its a bit naive to think that all his fame comes from his music work alone. in my opinion villalobos and loderbauer are underrated, even james holden is.. both re:ecm and the inheritors are much more solid works and inovative in composition and production techniques than any aphex twin album..
@@danielpereira8132 Opinion trash
He's one of the greatest composers of this century and will be studied and remembered as such. I've never heard a musician so in touch with the human experience.
I've loved this video since I was 17 years old. I'm 30 now. I was a completely different person in a completely different world then, but when I watch this video, I return to that place, and it makes me feel melancholy. Even now, scrolling through the comments, I stumbled across a comment I left on here 12 years ago--like a glance at some looking glass. I took a lot for granted. Just know that this video means a lot to me and that it brings me to a more comfortable and familiar place where the world still seemed so big and there was still so much time left. I miss that summer all those years ago and the people I knew then. I hope this never gets taken down.
We are so lucky to have each other. I like to imagine that if one day the human race does go extinct and some advanced civilization stumbles upon our ruins, they will find this video and understand who we were at our best. . . .

It's currently February 14, 2021.
This video turns 14 years old in two months. I'd have to imagine that the guys in this video are now in their 30s, probably standing well on cusp of becoming 40.
There is something very captivating about this video that I and so many others keep coming back to. Maybe it's because, this video is the closest thing to a modern snapshot of the past, like how your parents would dig into their old photo albums from the 70s and 80s.
Something tells me that even in the next decade when I'm well into my 30's, I still be coming back to this video just to admire it again.

I often wonder where these guys are now. I’m sure they have families of their own. Are they still friends? For all we know, this could have been the last time they spent a day together. Maybe they had a fight, maybe one of them could have passed away, or maybe they just naturally grew their separate ways. Or maybe they’re doing completely fine and are still best buds.
I wish they would come back and comment here. To let us all know.

Another year, another check in with this video.
First discovered aphex in school. Now been 3 years since I moved out of home.
Every year I feel my childhood that extra bit further away... I know I can't avoid it but it still stings to think about.
Dwelling on nostalgia. . . when you can never return ...
I always cry at this video. Still don't quite know. Until next time...
One of the original seven deadly sins was Sadness a.k.a Nostalgia. I get why it was, nostalgia prevents you from enjoying the present, as you are too caught up in trying to relive those days where you weren't nostalgic.
A few years ago someone posted a comment here along the lines of "I keep coming back to this video". It made me smile because I empathised, and more so now, as once again I find myself looking for APHEX TWIN RHUBARB ROOFTOP. I rarely comment on videos (least of all in as gushing and honest a manner as I find myself now), but I feel compelled to state that this video is- for reasons I can only partly fathom- incredibly important to me. Thank you RDJ... but also thanks to the dalycitytwins for making something magical. I think of you as old friends now; though we have never met (and likely never will) I wish you only well.
Keep this video here forever!

Let it be known, there are more of us that keep coming back to this. 3rd time in the last 7 years, this video is my solemn link to a closed loop from the days of old; quite befitting, my thoughts have always been that the shot and piece were a finale solely purposed for sweet remembrance. Keep it alive dalaycitytwins, lest we lose some of our former selves and may good fortunes befriend you.

been coming back here for over 10yrs...
Pretty sure I found this 14-15 years ago near its upload time, and I always associated this with my close friend because that’s the kinda hangout shit we’d do (without the drinks cuz kids). He died a couple of years back and it’s very much amplified the melancholic state. I’m back today as we lay another friend to rest because this suits the feeling so well.
Still coming back to this gem
I’d completely forgotten about this, I’d already thumbs upped it god knows how far back and here I am with tears rolling down my cheeks all over again. Could be 10 years later, could have been forever ago.
Fuck man.
What is it when we become so happy that we become sad?
It is the purest form of happiness.
It's nostalgia or melancholia or life
It's the Hagelian dialectic, we only understand true happiness if we have an understanding of sadness (pain) and the synthesis of the two is profound. Like life and death etc...
Melancholia.
Its guilt, we shouldn't be happy, love has died by our hands.
I dunno if you will see this, but I have seriously been returning to this video once every couple of years for the last ten years now. It somehow captures a universal nostalgia despite the fact that this is not my own lived experience. It is a perfect video, and I don’t mean that hyperbolically. It is a legitimate RUclips gem.
Everyone has been returning, you're not alone, friend.
Hauntology is beautiful eh ?

Lots of music and art is appealing to me, or just fine, or not that good - I'm not a connoiseur of any kind.
I don't really know anything about art. The way some other people talk about it makes me realise it's wasted on me.

this video gave me peace
15 years later
The year this video was published I became best friends with this other kid. We spent all our teenage and young adult years together. We were inseparable. We learned to play guitar together and we did that a lot. We wrote a lot of music with the intent of playing with one another. We also had the habit of climbing to this particular rooftop and have a few beers there. Once we used a rope to pull a table and a couple of chairs up to the roof and we called that our own rooftop bar, to which we'd come back often. One night we went were hanging out like so many other times and in the end of the night there was one beer left. We agreed to get together the next night to drink that beer together. I ended up forgetting that, he called me and I didn't pick up. That night his heart stopped and he died. I still miss him so much and I wish we could have that beer together and I always will. I will never have a friend like him again.
I’m sorry to hear that, your story moved me to tears. I’m sure he’s glad to have had a sincere connection with you as well. I hope you’ll have that beer sometime after your time is due too. Keep going 💪🏻

@@rawbeato i don't know if you would call it saudade. It has that sadness specific only to saudade, but saudade looks to the past- at something gone. This is like preemptive saudade, the same sadness but looking to the future- at something that will soon be missed.
@@pimxanthe emotion is just everyday feeling, a simple constructed moment you had when you were young with a friend. I'd think it might scare you to see "14 years ago" or more above some of the comments. It scares the shit out of me I'd tell you. But after watching the video all that anxiety somehow goes away. Considering that time is relative, you can imagine that somewhere far far off someone can see this very moment as it's happening. It will always be there.
Most people here mention this longing for bygone times. I feel differently. I feel this particular twinge of anguish that makes me feel bad about how much I'm gonna miss the good moments I'm living through right now. I'm in a dark place as of now, but I've also learned how precious small, simple experiences can be. And I'm scared that, like most things, they too will fade away into being just memories... And eventually, not even that. I wanna enjoy life very, very much. But I'm always scared that the magic will fade away.
This video reminds me of how temporary we all really are... it's beautiful
The video makes this song. Simplicity, and a crappy recorder gave the video some 'homegrown' intimate feeling. Maybe that's what's being lost in commercial music. The feeling. This has a real vibe. Many times over the years I have just sat and listened to this on repeat. How can this bring so much thought and emotion in two chords. Amazing.

I know that this is a video of two twin brothers, but I always felt like the video depicted two high-school best friends that are hanging out one last time, right before their high-school graduation ceremony, in their suits...
They know in that moment, that life is great, but that their lives will also probably be changing very much after that day. That they may not see each other very much again, from that day on, and that they will begin having many more responsibilities, etc. And therefore, there is a sadness about that day, as well. Which is so true about life...
Life can be great during our youth, but at the same time, life is usually extremely sad as we grow older. Life contains many beginnings, and many endings. And the sadness is usually stronger for many people, than the happiness.
The happiness of our lives, is usually at its peak, when we are preparing to graduate from high-school, and it declines after that.
And this music and video footage really seems to capture that feeling.
Aphex Twin said that the music for this song came to him in a dream. That doesn't surprise me, and it makes perfect sense. This very simple melody probably did in fact come from "the other side." It is such a moving piece of music, and really shows the power that music and love has.
Thank you, James, for this acoustic version of Rhubarb, and for this video. I hope that this video never leaves RUclips.
This is probably one of my all time favorite pieces of music and videos. I've been listening to this video for so many years, that I recall significant events in my life when I replay this video, many years later.
Have a great 2023 everyone. Peace.
I'm 22 years old right now, and I promise to come back in a few years if everything gets better to remember this moment. It's crazy how time flies. When this video was uploaded, I was 5 years old.
I always return to this
and the tears keep flowing
Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said
I feel very lucky to have found this video.
does anyone also get that weird feeling in their chest like it's tightening when listening to this track?
Oh god yes! Yes! that's exactly what I'm feeling. Kinda scary in the beginning but when it ends I feel more relaxed.
exactly. there has to be a name for it
It's called Melancholy
Heart-wrenching
Nostalgia to the point of pain and tears. This taps to human universal. Been returning to this nearly each year at least once.
a year sober today after almost a decade never not hung over
it would've been 2008 when I first heard this
I don't really regret all the damage I did to myself because what would be the point, it's done, we only move forward
but this song crossed my mind for the first time in a while and I put it on and it's hard not to feel
like something was lost, or missed
I am so, so proud of you man. I hope you’re doing well
Merry Christmas ❤️
Beautiful… Never let this video die please…
