@Creepy Lobster I think he had schizophrenia. He basically says it right there in the interview. He describes himself as symptoms and they all add up to S. Apparently he has found a way to live with it and thrive.

It is amazing how little observation humans perform ..
He had it right. He was willing to explore. He was open to a higher conciousness and experienced it as a child. He understood we were complex beings. He had compassion for people.
I love that.
Absolutely marvelous interview. And look at Jung at 84, clarity of mind, expansive of heart. A role model for us all.
..and so articulate! His English is brilliant. I imagine his French was just as good. What a joy to listen and watch this wonderful interview.

@Noah thomas The reason I can think of is that dreams are very closely related to the unconscious. And so it says something about you.
I think it wouldn’t be desireable to give your dreams to just anyone who will be able to interpret them, as these are very personal things. So it’s like giving away the contents of your mind, laid bare. So I guess it’s a psychonude

You should watch Betrand Russell's interview from 1952, if you haven't already. You just don't hear stuff like "My grandfather was born during the French Revolution" anymore.
Jung's initiatory dream into adult life was dreaming of the cathedral where his father was the minister with poop falling out of the sky all over the church and through the roof.
Why couldn't we have an interview of Einstein..why did they waste that precious opportunity?

He's very forthright in his answers. He doesn't seem worried about his image. He's unashamed and spontaneous. I didn't realize he was born in the late 19th century. This interview took place 10 years before I was born. What a treasure this recording is.

He's exactly how you'd want him to be.

Thats just having faith in yourself. Not all people put public opinion and image above EVERYTHING else in life. That is a modern phenomena and I think that's part of the atomization Jung mentioned there at the end.

Let’s not forget that this is a man who’s mother tongue is not English, yet is speaking of things that most who speak English couldn’t conceive of putting into words.
I can attest to that. I’m British, and I need a dictionary to accompany reading Jung.
Evan Williamson American here and same. It’s tough to even understand what is meant by a sentence he writes. Then once it’s understood, trying to understand the full scope of what he’s saying..... well that’s a completely different battle.

For me the most beautiful and important part of this amazing interview with this giant of man is from 7:48 on. Paraphrased, interviewer: 'Do you believe in God?', Jung: 'I don't have to 'believe', because I know.', followed by a spontaneous, authentic, loving, joyful smile. Pure gold.

@@bobibg4ever I don't think she mentioned that because it was the most interesting thing on the video, It's just something that stands out because it's not common to have video of such a historical figure, I mean, by the year 1900 he had already finished his studies, and we got video of him, such things are rare.

His final answer, derived from his personal research with his own patients, still holds up to this day. Man’s desire for individuality never went away and indeed became stronger and stronger.

I was looking for this comment, really remarkable. Also, a lesson on how to politely refuse to do something outside of our ethical boundaries.

I believe he is referring to the personal nature that was revealed and it would breach professional respect and trust by allowing others to gawk and judge Freud’s deepest and most likely darkest thoughts. Even after death.
@@tommytooter2895 I think rather he is of the view, which he states later in the film, that the psychical existence extends beyond death and so he knows that Freud may be listening. Therefore he is discrete.

The fact that his first posting after receiving his M.D.was at a mental hospital,who took the time to actually engage with his patients & study their art & writing shows a truly compassionate & humble man.

His intelligence and knowledge is daunting, but there's something about his being that's so humble, human and familiar. He's like Gandalf and your grandpa in one person. Always a twinkle in the eye. Very interesting and enchanting. This is the part of RUclips I love.

The greatest psychologist in human history. His writings are incomparable.
Now, Jung was amazing. However look at some of the great spiritual leaders today. Some of them did not even have an Education (Example: Esther Hicks and Anthony Robbins. However, Anthony Robbins is self-educated. However, he managed to deliver on an even higher level than his teachers at a very young age). I am now only talking about the US. I do not wish to tax my time.

Carl Jung turned 84 on Sunday July 26 of that year, 1959. I was born on that day and 62 to 63 years on I am grateful that I can learn so much from that amazing professor. Thanks a million for posting this.

This is believed to be the only footage of Jung giving an interview in English. One of the most important Europeans to be born in my view... this man changed my life entirely by his writings, and I am endebted to him in every regard.

Carl Jung was a blessing to humanity. As a young person his ideas were transformative for me and still create the knowingness of going to the depths of my soul for union with my Higher Self. Thank you for posting this.
What is the Higher Self? You have your soul. Then the question is - do you have the Holy Spirit as well. The Holy Spirit is the one you should address with a capitalised letter.
In Jungian terms, my understanding is "The Self". Is something akin to the integration of the Shadow and Anima or Animus into something like a unified psyche. Which would be similar to the higher self.
Instead of talking about Freud's dreams, he decides to be professional and keep it to himself. Admirable.

I'm shocked the interviewer had the gall to ask that question. It's obvious that that is confidential clinical information. I like the way Jung politely but unmistakably reproved the interviewer for that.

Mr. Jung won me over when he hesitated to answer if he still believes in God. He finally articulated: "....I don't believe, I know". Amazing soul to grace us still with his wisdom. This interview was made a year before I was born :)
I was shocked. Because I came to the conclusion that "belief" was a silly word when regarding my relationship to God. To hear another person say that, much less Carl Jung, is amazing.

For a man of such intellect to say this is very disappointing, it wasn’t his scientific mind speaking at this point, he switched it off. That was his emotional brain speaking, irrational. Of course he doesn’t know, it was a very childlike answer.

Alan Watts on meeting Jung in 1958:
I was enormously impressed with a man who was obviously very great, but at the same time, with whom everyone could be at ease. Jung managed to have wisdom and sanctity in such a way that when other people came into his presence they didn’t feel judged. They felt enhanced encouraged and invited to share in a common life.
And it was a sort of twinkle in Jungs eye. It gave me the impression that he knew himself to be just as much a villain as everybody else. Jung had a hintergedanken in the back of his mind. It showed in a twinkle in his eye. He knew himself, knew the “element of irreducible rascality” in himself, strongly and clearly and lovingly that he would never project the devil in himself upon somebody else, upon the scapegoat.
This made Jung an integrated character, thoroughly with himself. Having seen and accepted his own nature, he had a kind of unity and absence of conflict within his own character. He was the sort of man who could feel anxious and afraid and guilty without being ashamed of feeling this way.
In other words, he understood that an integrated person wasn’t someone who had eliminated feelings of guilt or anxiety from his life, who is fearless and wooden and a kind of sage of stone. He is a person who feels all these things but has no recrimination against himself for feeling them.

Wow, WHAT was JUNG hiding from us? Or WHAT were Freud and Jung hiding from us, and particularly and especially WHY!
If an individual hides something, or doesn’t want to reveal anything, that something or anything is usually the truth.
Carl Jung, Freud and all the Psychiatric Scientists are all eager to reveal the what the others have in the inside, but when it comes to them, they become slippery like a fish, and prefer to change issue.
It is just as he said. He has not died, just transformed his thoughts into knowledge for us to consume. Loved every minute of it. Thanks!
I have watched this before and it is a great documentary about Carl Yung being able to hear him in his own words. A man of great intelligence and wisdom. He gave the world tremendous insights into human consciousness and the subconscious. What a gift in the field of psychiatry and psychology.

I don't know why - I can't explain - but I'm heavily teary-eyed watching this. I'm just touched by the old man's sincerity. Jung's genuine, careful nature is so touching to witness, and I am so pleased that I can behold him in audible motion. I wish more people these days would indulge his works. He cared. He wanted to illuminate the minds of man. He deserves to.

Yes, I'm often brought to tears reading Jung. Perhaps that's when his humanity awakens my own? Wonderful to know that such a person existed in the world; fortunate that he left us such a recorded legacy.

Dr. Jung's concept of time always amazes me. When he says his parents were in the late middle ages, it's as if he's speaking to the modern audience watching, breaking the fourth wall.

I didn't like the interviewer, he asks very leading questions. He clearly is hoping for a particular response from Jung.

He was good about waiting for and listening to the answers. But some of the questions were at a level of idle-curiosity-neighborhood-gossip. That part was disappointing.

I just watched this on the BBC iPlayer since I’m in Scotland at the moment. It is perhaps the single most interesting interview I have ever watched. So many moments I wanted to say oh no wait! Please let’s explore that more, it could have gone for many more hours. I will watch it again there are so very many pearls of wisdom to stop and reflect. And I live close to his home in Zürich which is now (partially) open to the public. I loved when he said his grandchildren steal his hat what a wonderful human being 😊

I love that the human race produces people like Jung every once in a while. It’s like when it’s time for humanity to evolve and progress, humanity itself produces the very key to doing so.

And it is, in the cross of Christ. Jesus said: "Repent, or perish." He said that twice within the space of three verses of Scripture. If Jesus repeated something, he meant to draw particular attention to what He was saying. (Luke 13:3, and Luke 13:5)

I am 43, and have been studying Jung for years, but this is the first time I've ever heard him speak. What an incredible blessing it is; having access to free interviews and lectures from the greatest minds from the modern age. This is an education no university on earth can provide, period. I've spent countless hours listening to Alan Watts and Aldus Huxley, and I'll certainly add any more Jung I can find. I hope more people continue to learn and hear from these incredible people, in their own words, those who changed the course of human history for the better.

Actually I'm glad I'm not smart enough, because I noticed (watching this for the second time), that I was able to pick up on a few things that I missed on the first time round. Music to me (if it's really good) is like that. I have albums that I have bought because of a few tracks that I liked, and now I prefer other tracks on the album that I originally thought nothing of. Great information from great speakers is like this, so I downloaded this video. I hope it will always be left up on youtube but for some things, you have to make sure that you will always have an access to. This is one of them.

Recently learned Carl Jung was a distant cousin while studying my family history. It’s really cool being able to see an ancestor captured in time, even cooler discovery as someone who respects Jung’s work on a deep level.
How distant can a cousin be. What we talkin here?
@@ahtauwylye1340 lol, it’s really not super impressive, we share common grandparents, and we are separated by 7 generations. We are 11th cousins, I thought to myself, “well they say everyone is your 16th cousin, so how likely are you to be 11th cousins with someone?”
This is what I found: “it is 99.9999% likely from these numbers that any given person is at least a 16th cousin. And 97.2% likely that they are a 15th cousin -- but only 1.4% likely that they are an 11th cousin.”
So it ended up being cooler than I thought!
As far as I know, genealogy websites don’t go past 15 generations out.
Nonetheless it was a cool discovery for me to learn we had common grandparents in the line
We are all connected. Overcoming the illusion of being seperated is a major step forward.

I know.” -What Jung was talking about here is something very ancient…the mystery of “Gnosis”. -He is not talking about a conceptual knowledge of God, but of the direct experience of God, or Gnosis. This is why when the interviewer asked “Do you believe in God?”, he hesitated, and laughed, saying “this is difficult to answer…” -Jung’s personal journey took him from the conceptual belief in God (the Christian/Religious idea of God which can be completely devoid of direct experience. A concept which has been the cause of countless wars and millions of deaths), to the experience of God within the Psyche. Only once you experience Gnosis (direct experience of the divine within) can you say you no longer “believe”, but you “know” God exists. The world needs more people like this beautiful, smiling Mystic!! What a world we would live in if we all lived in connection with the direct experience of God that exists within us all, and within all things!! ❤❤❤🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 Thank you, Jung, for your contribution to the awakening of Man!

He seems so ahead of his time with the level of respect to his patients, respect to Freud's privacy, his honesty and empathy. I am honestly surprised as not even modern day psychiatrists are always like that.
There is a quality of sincerity, authenticity, and humility that shines through this man. There is also a tremendous force, still evident even at this age of 84. This is the man who wrote The Red Book, filled with brilliant paintings and meticulous calligraphy, this was Freud's original protege who dramatically broke away to found his own school of psychology, this was the author of a large corpus of profound work, and this was the man who helped thousands of souls during his time on Earth and untold millions more via his writings.

Just reading him as a precocious and deeply troubled teen - saved my life rather he lead me to look inside myself without fear or rather with fear but look anyway to save myself, the hero within, the shadow work,,the numinous beasts. The sheer compassion of his generous intellect made all the difference. My father figure! And for an abandoned fatherless girl - you cannot know unless you know the importance of a non incestuous father. Mine wasn’t that ! He was just absent. Just to be clear. People are no longer constrained by nature or traditions and thus can shape the world in a way that has never been seen before. If we don't know ourselves well enough, we might very well build a new world that is much more worse than the old one

Thank you for posting this interview. Jung is such a likeable man. This was a short but sweet introduction to his world and I must say I am now thoroughly intrigued by his work's findings.

In the final question, both Jung & interviewer were discussing on technology bringing minds through social togetherness.. 50 years later mankind is trying to sync in through internet & social media platforms.. and Jung's point 50 years back rings a loud bell.. "in the end there will be a reaction...Man can not lead a meaningless life..!"
This piqued my interest as well. Though I thought of the reaction as the birth of Postmodernism and individualistic values. Truly a great man.
The reaction to this interview was phenomenal Thousands of viewers wrote in saying how deeply moved they were by Jung's words. Because of this Freeman asked Jung if he would write a non academic book directed at the ordinary people. Jung at first refused, but then he had a dream. He was in a market place addressing a large crowd. He knew then he was meant to reach out to the ordinary people and wrote " Man and his Symbols . This was my introduction to Jung and he has been my life-long guide ever since

Miss Me, I felt exactly like you. Whether one agrees or disagrees with Jung's
conclusions he always struck me as a completely authentic person, true to himself regardless of anything, and just incapable of selling himself or others out. One feels one is with both a gentleman and a little child all at once, and while being great thinker he accepts the mystery of it all and doesn't rule out that anything is possible. That's pretty rare - and humble too boot . He fascinates me on many levels.
