I´d recommend reading Carl Jung's Collective Works to better understand his main ideas. This video is excellent, but it only partly clears up two of the main archetypes: Self, Persona - not the Shadow, Anima/Animus.

Not exactly. I, for one, have no problem as most of his type who comment here. The followers of type theory are large in number. There is a new Audjable tape out. It is a best seller. The Market for it is I (1/4) N (1/4 )=1/16(of the population), which is not small.
I've felt like that since childhood, so I rarely say what I think, although I'm still a fairly proficient conversationalist.
I've even mentioned the gist of this in my own words to people, not been understood, so kept it to myself!

I've never seen a video of Carl Jung talking before and obviously he has a brilliant mind but I didn't expect him to also be so warm and empathetic - there's a real gentle quality underneath the intellect
He reminds me of my german grandfather
He worked really hard to develop those characteristics and it wasn’t easy for him, you also have to keep in mind that you are seeing his extroverted intuition on full display. In reality he was EXTREMELY introverted and calculating, he’s one of the most intelligent people you will ever hear/read.
In another documentary I watched of people who knew him and were treated by him, this was really emphasized. How warm and empathetic he was.
I've never BEFORE seen a RUclips comment composed using correct grammar, so I suppose we're similar in some regards. ;)

For me it is kind of obvious that he at least had a “diagnose” in the way ho spoke.

I know todays system is fucked up, it’s a global problem! But I think we live in the right time, I think that more and more people are realising that we need to take back the power and change the system to be beneficial for all and not just a few!
Today to become a philosopher you need a degree an philosophy and you get that by studying philosophy’s history, historical philosophers and their philosophy’s... You don’t need a philosophical mind at all...
Same with many other things that you really just need mental capacity for..
But there is a reason why the most intelligent fail school, it was not created for us but against us.
If a majority of the most intelligent “fail” in life they will never oppose the rulers! And that 80% are just easily manipulated sheep who think they know feelings and are intelligent..

Agreed. Freud was a pioneer but only scratched the surface(and was neurotically obsessed with sex) whereas Jung dug into the depths of human consciousness. He far surpassed Freud and is now being recognized properly as the genius he was.

I love how he says that the classification of individuals means nothing at all.... It is merely a way of expressing concepts or tendencies of a person's character in certain situations and within certain contexts. That should be remembered by people in a great many areas.
Indeed, hilarious how the myers briggs types have blown up and been misused. An interesting reflection of the narcissistic state of the modern west, where self definition is everything. The actual individuality and fluidity of the types is ignored by popular culture, only the most distinct and obvious things extracted to give a persona more contents.
In Jung‘s personality type book he wrote that the types he illustrated were exaggerated to illustrate the point that human beings have these functions. So he used extreme one-sided stereotypes to illustrate his point.
I think it is helpful to know one’s dominant functions, but his point was to discover the „inferior functions“ the functions that you have not developed and to give a clue to biased attitudes and shadow projections.
Finally Jung hipnotized him.

@@valg8245 These are active listening techniques, you might find them annoying, but they're a verbal indicator that the interviewer is listening instead of anything else.
As a neuropsychologist I've always looked up to Jung. This video revived and enhanced my admiration realising that his insights should be taught at school and shared with all the population. Mankind needs it more than ever. If you are a psychiatrist, philosopher or psychologist, please spread his insights through talks in a accessible way to people.
I agree, what are we taught ?? Pretty much nothing the little I know I taught myself!! Even the subject of perception ( even esp) I call it a knowing that is very, very taboo I believe many who have it developed depression and maybe other disorders!! Just one example! 💕

My mother taught me that very young, I came from a very rich family who happened to be very poor, 12 kids in all my father started having heart attacks very young, around the kitchen table we could talk about any subject , and boy could we all talk what a wonderful way to be raised! Communication so important and to have the feeling your opinion is valued! I had some well to do friends I don’t remember seeing a book, never heard conversation, as I grew up I thought how sad . What a POOR way to be raised, they had better THINGS however I had something money could not buy, to feel valued and loved is key!! And yes my mother was an empath, somehow passed down to a few of us, it has served us well!! She would have been labeled a nut by most, we were blessed to have her. Soar with the angels Carl Jung
@@dacovaz apparently the Buddha said pretty much the same, don't believe what anyone tells you even me , look, investigate for yourself and only when you see what is right its OK to believe. But of course Buddhism does advocate training your mind, cultivating certain qualities like mindfulness so you can see the truth, reality thru direct experience
This was a profoundly moving watch for me. Although I knew who he was I never researched him. Had I Seen this in my formative years my life would be a lot different. In saying that I plan to use the knowledge gained to further my studies so that in time me and my shadow will be able to dance together in a harmonious synchronization whenever we hear the songs of our patients. I am not formally trained but have 100% certainty that for the rest of my time here i will be able to help those that are in need. @@ayisha782 no problem. It was actually the last book he wrote before he died and from what I understand he tried to simplify it somewhat so people could better understand his ideas and concepts. And from there you can basically dive in anywhere. I highly suggest aion as well. Cheers.

3 hour interview with a Psychological heavyweight in his 80’s, Jung was a beast, I believe he worked up until his death. He has such a great voice and manner of speaking too, no evidence of any pretension!

@@Zerenko I'm an atheist and I don't see it as important. I think Jung believed in a collective unconscious. The idea of consciousness separate from physical beings - a separate spirit world (which I don't believe in) - apparently always pervaded all his work. I think he was also Platonic in that he believed that his archetypes actually had some independent existence of their own, whereas imo, to the extent they exist, they are cultural phenomena. Maybe you're an atheist fundamentalist?

There are some films with Freud, including a few talkies from the 1930s. But nothing like this, extended for hours. Film with sound got much cheaper, easier, and more common after the war.
I've never seen video of Freud but have heard audio. Much more high pitched than expected.
He was in such good health for being in his 80's!
Ah, it`s so sad that sometimes I have trouble understanding a few words he says, but man, its... so amazing, he was a fascinating man. The more I read about his ideas the more I understand myself and the better I become in understanding my own... mysteries so to speak, each and everyone of us are such incredible beings with such a wealth of experiences and untapped knowledge and potential. Its like if we look inwards we could be lost with so much richness.

I once was a patient in the psychiatrie he worked in. I was miserable and a lost soul. After some time I red Jung and his teachings it led me to individuation of my personality. I'm still struggling with myself but now I have a understanding of myself and I know that the understanding of the own soul is sacred

I didn't realize that Jung had a real life film. I thought he was this larger than life legend from past. I studied his ideas and theories in college and it seemed more like fantastical art. We are privileged to see him in life.

The way he speaks is very different from the voice in my head i read his books with. It will be very interesting to reread some of his works now that I know his style of speaking and thinking. It's like reading the same text message but with a different tone of voice

@@TheIntrovertedThinker hmmm... have you ever only texted with someone and then finally met them in person? If you have then I don't have to guess that they will have surprised you because you would have had another image of them. Meeting them and talking with them would have felt like meeting a different, totally new person. But after talking with that person live, when you text again the texts will sound different as you read them. I don't know how else to explain it.

In my 20s I didn't think much of Jung. When I turned 40, I realised he is awesome. Thank you for uploading this amazing interview.
The sentiment toward natural philosophy and much less adherence to strict rationality as one advances in years is really amazing. In my 20's, I too said this psycho babble nonsense. But in my 50's I'm figuring out why I asked, "big WHY questions," throughout the course of my life.
Jung would argue that you wouldn’t have been developed enough to truly understand and process these concepts until you were 40 anyway.

The intonation and the general way in his voice when the question is answered was Beautiful. obviously for ignorant people (mostly logical positivists) who do not understand what he means by "God", and more specifically, do not understand that the concept of such a thing is wildly varying among cultures and people. to them this might seem stupid. but most importantly -- people who deny "God" do not understand the importance of psychologically diving into, and investigating what such a thing might mean for us humans. instead they sadly abruptly end at the silly image of some actual semi-physical angry dude in the sky.

Around the 52 minute mark Jung utters something I cannot even begin to fathom regarding the structure and origins of a" hunch": it is a product of the unconscious in the psyche that is beyond space and time in a customary causal metaphysical framework...."now swallow that one!!" Jung's wisdom will live on for millennia. Just scratching the surface of the surface in 2020. Maybe by 2120 we may begin to know something about the human soul.
I was amazed by the same comment, and I just loved that devilish smile of his after saying it. He so often explains experiences and ideas that I would never have been able to articulate. A true genius. This video and his work should never be lost or forgotten.
Jung always said that he cannot say anything about the metaphysical, so be careful when using that word. What Jung always said is that his views are based on what he observed and in the case of the 52 mark he speaks about syncronicity, as in the link between the psyche and the physical. These are phenomena he observed and that can occur at any time (it happened to me as well). This psyche that goes beyond time and space can be observed in the dreams as well. Jung gave some examples of that, one of which is that of the dream of the guillotine (where a famous person dreamt of being guillotined after running being caught and facing a trial) the moment the bed's headrest fell on his neck. When did the dream start? The moment the headrest fell on his neck?

Great. Interviewers should learn how to conduct one from here. The sheer breadth of Jung’s knowledge is impressive. A man who is whole. One can tell he has blossomed into a complete human. One can smell no racism,sexism,nationalism etc etc....all the things that keep us small and divided. A truly global,complete man. How beautiful. Very fortunate to have come across this.
We should be so grateful that we have the honor the hear one if not the best thinker in Psychology. I am so thankful for these 3 hours with the best.

The prince of the power of the air is at work weaving a web of distraction, people are so addicted to their phones ,it is like being in a bad dream for me. I am so glad I threw out my cell phone six years ago ,liberating. I liken the cell phone to an electronic leash on people ,most do not even realize it or do not want to admit to being addicted and controlled by a gadget.

I so wished the Interviewer had followed up on Jung‘s insights on women in the beginning.
Jung came from a traditional background. Nonetheless his psychology is remarkably modern and egalitarian between men and women, more so than Freud's ideas, which perpetuated some antique mistakes about women.
Beyond grateful for this .
