Panasonic Lumix G85/G80 setup for video & filmmaking

- I've had a few people on Facebook message me asking me about the video settings I'm using with my Panasonic G80 (G85) and GX80 (GX85) cameras for shooting video. It seems that if I don't have a battery in these cameras for a couple of weeks, they forget their custom settings, so I thought this would be a great opportunity to make a video to show you.

Unfortunately, when I started to shoot this video, I noticed that the SD card slot in one of my G80shad died. Which meant I couldn't do this video quite the way I'd originally intended. It was purchased directly from Panasonic, only 7 weeks ago and I'm still waiting to hear back from them after several days. So, I guess we're finding out how good Panasonic's support is.
Anyway, I'll have a sort-of-part-two on this coming at some point when I have a second working G80 again, going over the full cage rig I'll be using with this and how that's all set up. For now, enjoy, and here's how I get Cinelike D on the GX80/GX85.

Do you agree with these default settings? What would you do differently?
I love that you talk a lot about the Viltrox NF-M43x (it's literally my favorite piece of kit!)
Once you get the optic dialled in for infinity focus, it's a fantastic adapter for putting Nikon glass on MFT bodies. :)
This was good. I picked up two of these for a podcast studio I'm building out. Thx!
Seems that these settings are a bit dark in my office, but I'll give them a shot in the studio later. I have two 200w tungsten lights with diffusers.
Thanks so much for this John! Brilliant!!
You're very welcome, hope it helped! :)
Good review.
Nice video buddy
Thanks, Chris! Hopefully Panasonic can get my other one fixed quickly and I can do the follow-up, lol
Great video - so informative, thank you!
Incidentally, what’s the music backing track?
Thank you for this video! I just bought my LUMIX G80 for an excellent price and I’m quite new to the whole mirrorless experience. So, here’s a question for you: why do you save the ISO, aperture and shutter speed in the end of the video? As sort of a blank canvas to start from each time? Because obviously everything changes constantly. Cheers!
Mostly it's because I have five cameras that all effectively share the same hardware and firmware (three G80s and two GX80s) and when I grab a random camera, I want to know what its starting point is. When you save the settings with a manual exposure, it WILL save whatever exposure settings are dialled in at that time anyway, so why not set them to something useful? :)
My shutter speed is never going to change. I generally want my ISO as low as it'll go, but I'm happy with 800 (and right now, while we're still on lockdown, I'm shooting here at home indoors and I'm always under the same lighting conditions that are metered for f/5.6 at ISO800 and 1/50th of a second). The main reason I set the aperture is because the only MFT lenses I have are variable aperture zooms. If I'm out and vlogging with one using the 12-60, it means that if I zoom in and out, my aperture isn't going to constantly change. It just stays fixed at f/5.6. When I'm filming other stuff, though, I'm using Nikon lenses with either a Viltrox adapter or speed booster and I'm setting the aperture with a ring on the lens or the adapter, so the camera setting doesn't matter (because the camera can't communicate with the lens anyway).
@@JohnAldred Cheers, mate! That’s an thorough elaboration. Thank you.
If the second camera is still not working, I would first try to reset everything in that camera to factory default. I believe it is in the wrench icon called reset.
It's a physical failure with the camera. There's nothing that resetting it would do. Panasonic has confirmed to me that it's a common issue and they've had it picked up for repair now. :)
@@JohnAldred i just purchased a panasonic g85 . I hope i dont have that softwaesr ussue.
You have to turn the right protected off and back on for it to pick it up. Minds does that sometime.
It was the slot that was broken. It did the same thing with every card I tried to put into it. I sent it back to Panasonic over a year ago, they confirmed the issue, fixed it under warranty and sent it back to me. :)
@@JohnAldred Ok, I have to cut my on and off sometimes.
What's the speedbooster you use to enable Nikon lenses?
Hey Jordan, it's the Viltrox NF-M43X - amzn.to/3u1PtbK :)
Hi :) for some reason on mine there isn't the 4k/100 setting - only mp4 ones. Could it be to do with the sd card?
That's very strange. You're using a G80/85? Are you on the most recent firmware?
Hey man is there a way to change the aspect ratio in video mode ?
I don't think there is on the G80. Not when shooting video, at least, which is a shame. It would be nice to be able to shoot 4:3 for anamorphic lenses (even if I'd have to manually shift the pixel aspect ratio in DaVinci Resolve). I think for that you'd need to step up to the GH5 or maybe the G9 with the newest firmware (although I'm not 100% the G9 does it).
Smallrig cage were you buy im looking for my g81 can't found
I don't think SmallRig makes one anymore. You might need to just keep an eye on eBay and FB marketplace.
Its quite a bit for a novice. I heard the auto focus has a problem on subject . Can using bracket s help narrow the focal point?
Hi John, I'm not sure what you mean? I only use autofocus for video when vlogging and pointing the camera at myself. Other than that I'm always in manual focus for video. For stills photography, the autofocus is great. :)
@@JohnAldred in stills u can narrow the area of focus. I was assuming that can be done with video also. If im wrong my bad. The article a read said the camera while in auto focus has trouble picking a focal point . I never notice that with my old dmc g7. Im assuming its better now.
@@johnramirez5032 Autofocus with video isn't something I really mess with all that much. Usually if I go AF, I've got the camera pointed at myself for vlogging, so I just use the Eye AF. For everything else, I'm always manual focus when filming. Sorry I couldn't be of more use with that. :)
@@JohnAldred i just watch a great video on the g85 i ordered. Im going to be very happy with i. I got the next lens up too. Thanks for you help. Ill be doing stuff mostly in auto too . O was a little nevouse about what i read but im certain ill love this camera
Hi! In Movie Mode I cannot choose CineLikeD. It's only set on Standard. What can I do on my G80?
You should be able to switch through standard, natural, etc. Eventually it should let you choose Cine D and Cine V.
Two cameras is not enough man. You need four ;)
Well, I have got the two GX80s as well, lol
@@JohnAldred Great camera options for consistency 👌
Why in g80 in M mode the camera cannot enter the tab photo style? ;oo
I'm not sure what you mean?
I would never shoot cineD at -5 contrast at -5 sat. It falls apart quickly when correcting
That's not been my experience, but what would you suggest instead? :)
@@JohnAldred Ì've tested all the profiles and I prefer the skintones of natural the most, most contrast -5 and sat -2 to get rid of the orange/red tint in the skin. I do however prefer how the CineV profiles has the shadows right where I want them and it has the best greens.
I will definitely check it out and give it a try, but mostly I've been quite happy with Cinelike D for my needs. I don't need to do anything extreme when it comes to colour, and using the ColorChecker Video with my scopes in Resolve, it corrects quite nicely. :)
@@JohnAldred Surely you can get a fine image out of this, but when I did side by side tests and shot some faces the natural profile always looked much better to the orange cined
I'd still be correcting with the ColorChecker Video, regardless of what profile I was using. :)

My 2 G85’s turn off at 1:10 when recording… any ideas on how to get more video out them
That's very odd, and a very specific time. If the battery's not dying and the card you're using is fast enough to save out the video data (you'll want to use a UHS-I V30 card) then I'm not sure what it could be, really. My G80s have always gone up to the 30 minute limit and your G85s don't have that limit. So, they should keep going until either the card's full (assuming it can keep up) or the battery's dead. What memory cards are you using?
Lexar 128GB Micro SD Card, microSDXC UHS-I Flash Memory Card with Adapter - Up to 100MB/s, A1, U3, Class10, V30, High Speed TF Card
@@kingdaveone That's odd. And both of them are stopping at exactly 1:10 every time?
One stopped at 1:09 the other at 1:12… I have them hooked up to an Atem mini pro so they stood on and I was able to record through the Atem but the cards in the G85’s only captured those times… although the Atem captures the full 1:40 of my podcast I’d love to be able to have back up via the SD cards in the cameras
@@kingdaveone Oh, you mean an hour and 10 minutes? I thought you meant a minute and 10 seconds, haha. Hmm... Well, it's not battery if it's still on and sending a signal out to the Atem. And if the card was too slow it wouldn't even record that much. I wonder if it's possibly overheating? The G80s are limited to 30 minutes recording at a time and I almost never need to record for that long continuously, so it's not something I've experienced.
Hii.Whats different g80 and g85 ?
They're basically the same camera. The G85 is what it's sold as in the USA, the G80 in Europe. The only real difference is that the G85 doesn't have that 30 minute record time limit. Personally, though, that's not an issue for me, because I'm never recording for that long anyway. :)
@@JohnAldred Thx so much for your super fast answer ! You re good person ! Respect from Amsterdam...
@@e.esiyok You're welcome, and thank you! I miss Amsterdam. I was supposed to be there in September for IBC before the world got cancelled. :(
@@JohnAldred :)) Everythink is gonna be allright ! After pandemi :)
Can Lumix Gh85 set to 1080 50i?
You can't on the G80, so I suspect not on the G85 (given that the only real difference between them is the 30-minute record limit). Everything's progressive. No interlaced.
why the video/movie mode? it can take video in any mode...
Because going into video mode hides all of the useless photo features I don't use when I want to shoot video. It's kinda the whole point of the camera having a video mode. :)
Confusing and doesn't help a new user
Confusing how? What questions do you have? :)
