      I realize it's been a long time, but nowhere and no one is announcing important information. At least it is not obvious to me.
      Such a question, in what program you paint video (in this camera there is no logarithmic profile). Immediately in rec 709 and add everything to taste or somehow need to convert correctly?

      It is 2022 and use my GX85 more than ever. And keep coming in here now and then to get som "cinematiec inspiration" from Spencers video. Actually, if I have to point out one thing that might be problematic with Lumix cameras (as I have heard and in part noticed myself) then it would be the focus. The auto-focus is very slow and unreliable but I mostly shoot static scenes anyway.

    having previously owned an a6300, i have to say that i am impressed by the power of this gx85. i'm using it now and i find it quite suitable. gx85 plus the 25mm 1.7 lumix lens (i bought them mainly after seeing a video of them together on this channel) was about half the price of what i paid for my previous a6300 + sony 35mm f1.8 oss. there are aspects i like about the gx85, of which i will mention three pleasant ones: 1) autofocus, even if it kinda sucks by itself, i found that if i use the manual focus, by using the touchscreen or back-button-focus, it is very satisfactory for my needs and i did not expect to be so ok with it - so, guys, touch focus still can be used in manual focus mode, and is very very usable; 2) having a touch screen is quite a thing; 3) shooting indoors with it is not that bad. i've had the combo for a few days and i recommend it to those who have an a6300 and want to have something rather comparable and at only about half the price. p.s.: natural profile is very gradable in video (with the settings recommended in this channel).

    Wow! It is SO good to find another filmmaker who 1. Uses the GX85 and 2. Is aware of the negative consequences of it's lack of a low-pass filter (and the wonderful workaround of using lenses that "mitigate...the effects")! There are a few experiments I've done which are working well in this area I'd like to share: A. I've use a Viltrox .71x focal reducer (have both Nikon and Canon mount versions) and they seem to really improve how the light is delivered to the sensor...and result in less digital AND MORE REAL rendering of the scene). B. In conjunction with this, I've used a Tokina 12-24 f/4 (which turns into an f/2.8-ish with the focal reducer) and this combination looks pretty filmic/natural (perhaps due to the less aggressive, but very appealing, color and contrast rendition). Here's a sample of it used indoors: ruclips.net/video/6MF_JSdLmqc/видео.html

    I bought a new old stock GX-85 last year to get a more pocketable camera to combine with my 14mm and 20 mm pancake primes for stills. Your video opens up an entirely different potentials of the GX-85 I had not dreamt were available. Even as a primarily stills photographer your use of the Zebras for more precise exposure control strikes me as a digital version of Ansel Adams' Zone System and your prescription for focusing settings likewise would seem to add greater precision just where I need it. I have tried but not used adapted glass much because my old eyes prior to cataract surgery were almost entirely dependent on autofocus, but this video opens up reconsideration of these possibilities - again both for stills and motion photography.

    • @SpencerWhiteman
      @SpencerWhiteman  3 года назад

      Lorenz, thank you so much for the beautiful comment! Comments like these are a huge reason why I create these videos. I love the reference to Ansel Adams' Zone System, it's similar in style in capturing the darkest parts of the image so as to not lose that detail, but keeping the white point just under clipping, maxing out the sensors capable dynamic range. I'm so glad you found this video eye-opening! :)

    Thanks for this video -- I will be referencing it when I'm out trying to dial in some good video with my G85. I did want to correct one thing. For focus peaking, "Low" basically represents "less precision" with the peaking color. "High" represents "higher precision" with the peaking color. IOW, if you really want to nail focus -- High is where you want to be, however, it may be quite a bit more difficult to see the peaking because it will only occur in a narrower focal range. The quickest and easiest focus option is on low, but the focus peaking color might not provide the optimal focus for the shot.
    Why doesn't the manual focus guide have a number associated with it? A number for a particular focus distance would make vlogging focus so easy!

    I just picked up a two lens kit from B&H at $499 usd I had sold my GH4 a couple years ago and had been with Sony RX100 & RX10 but felt the GX85 offered a lot of portability and better photo quality. Thanks for the tips on video settings, we are using the RX100 for 4K video at the moment.

      Absolutely! The RX100 is a great little camera series as well! The GX85 is a little gem that is for sure, thank you for watching!

    Amazing result our of this small box. i m rediscovering the gx85 that i bought 7-8 years ago and really enjoy it. Your video brings more interest to the video part. Some of the links are not available anymore, could you give the references of the gears used. Also why is the 25mm your favorite lens (i have 20mm and 42.5 and contemplating the 25mm), is it still the 3 years later?

    Hi spencer! Great vid. Question, there is a hood which adapts the ND filters (77mm) with the diameter of the lenses, do you know how to find it or an specific name? Greetings from Peru 🇵🇪

    Great video Spencer! I have a G-85 that I’ve been using mostly for a couple years now but seeing your images and results after grading I am returning to my settings to set up a matching profile to yours and just see if I can’t just squeeze a little more out of it here. Liked and sub’d!

    Thanks Spencer, as someone who previously owned a GX85 and now a GX9, I love seeing what it can do in capable hand. Anyway, may I ask if you have a tip to nail white balance or do you just stick with sunlight?

  • @deepseadiver8191

    Very nice! I keep coming back to this camera despite all the newer and theoretically better cameras that have been released. I think I sold it and bought again 3 times already, it sure makes me feel a bit silly. There's something about the way GX85 renders motion that is very different than Sony and even other Panasonic cameras, even the videos from S5 and S1 don't seem to have that specific quality. In this particular setup I believe that the image degradation the focal reducer introduces (slight chromatic aberration, possibly some softening) does a lot of the magic - the images look much less digital. Your video makes me want to get this camera again and hopefully never sell it this time.

    • @SpencerWhiteman
      @SpencerWhiteman  3 года назад

      HAHA, that is incredible! I 100% agree on the image degradation from the focal reducer with the Chromatic Aberration introduced, the shot at 0:17 highlights it and it looks really great. Almost gives off that halation effect that film stock renders. I'm so glad this video could persuade you in feeling that way, thank you!
