I got one of these bad boys when they were pretty new and I'm still using it regularly in 2023. It's almost perfect.
My man, so glad you're stoked on the camera. That's a good point you brought out about it not being the most "efficient" 1st or only camera, it really is a complimentary camera to grab that extra angle or a fun photo and b-roll cam since it lacks some very useful tools (mostly just the mic jack). So hyped on the love with the shoutout, keep up the awesome work!
Hey. What would be the best affordable first camera then? 😁
@@clemthai i know this comment is late but it depends on your needs
@@benferris6472 to some it may be an em1 series camera. to some it may be a g9. to some even a gx80. depends. for street photography the gx is hard to beat.
@@clemthai g80/g85 is literally the same except it has a mic jack, flip screen, and a bigger grip.
Just got this camera and I’d say even in 2024, this camera is still a powerhouse that’ll hang with cameras much more in price. Pretty incredible actually how much lumix charges for this camera and the features it comes with, honestly should be much more expensive. That L.monochrome setting is fantastic looking, as well! I’ve had everything from Pentax to Leica to everything in between, this camera definitely catches my attention!
I went from a Sony SLT camera to a GX80 in 2016 to reduce the size of the equipment to carry. It's been my main camera ever since, still happy with it.
GH5 and GX85 have been my filming combo for 3 years now and I'm still loving it.
Same setup w me! Curious, what lenses you pair them with?
Typically, GH5 + Viltox EF M2 + Sigma 18-35 F1.8 Art and GX85 + 45 Olympus 45 f1.8. Most of my shootings are interviews.
@@MrSoftypolimer sounds great 👍🏻
Just bought the GX85 last week. I already have the GH5 but use it less because of the size and weight. Now, GH5 only comes out from storage to do proper video work in company settings.
The GX85 literally goes with me everywhere so far, such a joy to use because of it's size. Look hella good too!
The GX85 has always been one of the most underrated little cameras ever. I still use mine for B roll and occasional street shooting.
I LOVED my gx85. It was my first "real" camera. It's so good! The lack of a mic jack is the only real bummer.
deoasnt have mic jack? There is a way for put mic?
@@oblukanetv5574 my gx80 has a mic, and if you really want to record some audio just record it on the phone and edit it to the footage!
I’m rocking an S5 and a GX85 for video and photos and love them both!
I've been singing the praises of the GX85 for years, it's got so much packed into a tiny package. It's perfect as a secondary photo or video camera!
The GX85 and Spencer Whiteman is the reason I bought the GX9
Still loving mine on quick shoots out in the field
I had it for a year. I'm blown by how many things this can do. Birds, wildlife, portraits, video... I just had to 3d print a piece to direct the mics audio better in case I was doing something semi-professional
My 3 camera set up is the GH5, the G85, and the GX85; the lack of a mic jack isn't a problem since I just use the audio from the other two for my multicam work. What I REALLY love about the GX85, and what I think is the ultimate promise of the M43 system, is that I can take it into a concert or sporting event and with the 35-100mm f2.8 get incredible, professional looking video in situations where "professional cameras" are banned. They don't give my tiny camera with a lens the size of a soda can a second look. You couldn't do that with a full frame camera with a 70-200mm lens.
For multicam work I love how small it is. I can put it on a Manfrotto super clamp on a balcony edge or railing and not have to worry about it. It has opened up so many different camera angles for my work because of how compact it is.
I definitely can recommend it!
I got this camera like 3 weeks ago! And I love how easy it is to use! Def an amazing camera for beginners!
After seeing your videos, I've been sold on the MFT system and was looking to get the Lumix G85/GX85. Upgrading from an entry level Nikon. Love you videos!
I really appreciate the fact that you are not just pushing equipment with affiliate links, but that you do honest and personal views on cameras and other equipment. That is great. Thanks.
I swear this is the most underrated channel. I really know how good your content is and I hope more people find out about it. good job brother
I've had my GX85 for 4 years now and it's still one of my cameras to take out and take photos. Vintage lenses on it are interesting because that micro four thirds 2x crop. It's one of my go-to cameras and I'm bringing it on a shoot I'm doing for someone in a few weeks.
Will shamelessly admit Spencer's videos on the gx85 made me want one enough that I went out and picked one up. Haven't used it a ton yet but so nice to have when you do want something small without sacrificing quality!
I found one of these with the pancake Kit, 45-150mm for $140 bucks here in ca. The lady had no idea how to figure it out and had it up for sale almost a year. Super thankful for this find!
I absolutely love my GX80. I use it just for hobby filming and hobby photography and I never thought that this camera is such a little beast in terms of Video quality. I love the 4K options but also 1080p 60 looks amazing. The IBIS is doing a great job. Just the Video AF is not very reliable. But it is what it is, no Camera is perfect. I record Audio external with a Olympus LS-P1 Audio Recorder and mix it up in post. It needs a little bit more work, but the sound quality is great. I think, this camera has a lot of potential and is a great starting point to learn how to utilize the MFT eco system in a creative way. And I really learnd a lot since I switched from APSC to MFT. - Thank you for this great video Nigel!
You can also get Cinelike D on GX85. lots of examples of how, but I found Tommy Callaways vid easy to follow.
Yeah I installed it on mine too, love that it’s so easy
Love this little camera. I won mine in a contest so that makes me love it more. I shoot a lot of stock footage and carry this camera about everywhere. My sister was in the hospital for some back surgery and I took this camera which allowed me to shoot some hospital footage on the downlow. I've sold a couple of those shots.
I'm just looking for a compact, budget priced travel interchangeable lens camera. Problem is there so much competition between Sony, Panasonic, Olympus, Fuji, and Canon that I don't know what to choose.
Also bought this camera as a b cam to my bmpcc4k after watching a bunch of Spencer's videos. Great camera
I've been to that skatepark, it's in Portland. Ed Benedict.
Still have those camera from 2016, works great! Moving from Canon 60D to GX85
I picked up one for a trip we took and loved it. Scooped a second one used for my son when I saw one listed on the local by and sell. Solid photography , good 4K, nice size, viewfinder, m43 - I love it. Just the on/off switch is in a horrible location.
Wow😃😃😃 I used to say think this was a good 1st camera, but I totally agree that it is awesome as a 2ND CAMERA. You and Spencer are some of my favorite RUclipsrs, and the GX85 is my favorite camera for the following reasons:
1. The price
2. The IBIS
3. You can use perspective control or tilt/shift adapter with it (because the rangefinder style body does not impede the up and down movement of the shift!
I have had the GX80 for 4 years and I just love the camera. As you said, it's a really capable photography and filmmaking camera.
I shoot on the G85 which is very similar to the GX85 and I've been loving it ever since day 1!
I have owned 2 of these gems separately in the past. I’m one of these ppl who will buy and sell multiple cameras to use, try out and sell again for something else. But, I might have to get this again and compare to what I currently own to see which wins out. Some of my favourite photos were taken with this and the Oly 17mm f1.8. I currently own a Fuji x-e2 and an Oly e-m10iii. The Oly has a better viewfinder, but for some reason I can’t get the touch focus to work whilst looking through the viewfinder. I’ve checked menus and it all seems to be enabled to do this, so it might just be faulty (or I’m mistaken and it just can’t do this), but I had no problem doing this with a gx80 and it’s such a neat feature. For less than £300 secondhand these are a steal and an easy one to recommend.
Everything you said on this video is EXACTLY why I bought my GX85 and why I love it, I even made a youtube video in Spanish talking about the same exact stuff, nice to see that we agree on an awesome camera, oh btw, Spencer hook me up on this camera too xD
This is my first and main Camera, but i love the images and videos that cames out of it.
I own the gx85 / 80 and I am very satisfied with it, the only cons are the battery life, of course the autofocus of the Lumix and the lack of audio input, I solved this problem with the Tascam DR-10SG microphone / recorder by synchronizing the tracks in post, sorry my english i am italian :)
Such a great vid. What camera settings (aperture and shutter) did you use for the gimbal shot? Everything so nice and crisp. Every time I go down an expensive gear hole I come back to your channel
2 Year old video and you made me buy 2 of these !
Love the GX85. Kept one in my bag since 2017. Still keeping up great.
Such an underrated camera. Perfect for family trips and professional work!
I love this camera, used to be my B Cam to my GH4 until the shutter stopped working! I im considering getting it again or the GX9!
Timely video! Been watching Spencer Whiteman myself. lately debating between the GX8, GX85, and GX9
I got the Fuji XS10 and paired it with the 18mm f2 for a similar purpose
I'm into photography not so much video and this is the only camera I use really. It was in my price range and most cameras aren't as I have a limited budget. it does everything I want .
I agree, great little camera for photography as well as video!
Gotta admire the honesty in that headline.
I feel more and more inclined to get into the M4/3 system. There are dirt cheap offers and the used market is plenty. The latest Olympus om-d e-m10 mark iv seems to be a great camera for the price and there are pocket friendly little Panasonics. My only concern is the video autofocus.
I see this guy's videos and get the sense he'd be a chill dude to hang with.
That line was very smooth and the footage super crisp! Looks like a fun park
Gx85 is amazing I had it once and returned it and missed it every since. You can buy the mirror reflector to help with filming yourself. I went for for the gx9 however I prefer the gx85. There is just something about the camera. I've also noticed on the USA model it's unlimited recording. I'm excited to see what's in the new Panasonic firmware. If the gx9 does not get the update I'm picking up the gx85 again.
What do you prefer about the GX85 than the GX9? Just curious, thought the the GX9 is better overall package. well maybe one I can think of is lesser crop in 4k.
@@Jaymino_ I liked the Dial's better on the gx9 however of you do not currently have any m43 lenses the 12-60 that comes with the gx9 is a awesome lens
@@sdhute Hey Steve, from your initial comment, I thought you meant the GX85 was better. Anyways, it's so close between the two, you won't go wrong with either one. I currently pair the 20mm with GX85- lightweight setup for photos on the go!
Just got this one, great indeed next to the S5!
I recommend a thumbs up grip for cameras like this, it changes the pivot angle in your grip, moving the point of stress deeper into your palm where your hand is stronger.
Oh no. I think I need this, no joke 🤣
Just picked up an x-e4 today, too bad I didn't see this video earlier lol
Spencer sold me on the easyrig, dope little cam! It’s expensive as hell but I got the sigma fp for the same reason
There is also the Sony ZV1 you can find around 500$. Amazing quality and perfect for travel and everyday filmaking. You should try it !!
Nice! The size is perfect and I totally agree that it'd make a great "walk around" camera!
If I were to sell my X100F, I would definitely get a GX85 or GX9. I'm more photography oriented, so the Fuji is more than enough. But being able to use my MFT lenses on an everyday camera, would be great.
Man I miss my old GX7, such a good form factor. Hope to buy again someday
“Hey pai” love that you kept that in the video. 😂 🇵🇹 Enjoying your work keep it up 👍🏻
This camera is def special. Lots of times using it id like the shot more than my g9 lol. I think the gx9 is another sleeper camera. Also I think the gx8 was like the best design
I’m debating on getting this or an S9 tbh.
I'm getting this thanks so much bro 🙏🏾 your channel is amazing don't stop
Love the Phone call hi pai!! Great vid Nigel
I love this camera had it for the last 2 years and its been so perfect for stills and videos on the go. But sadly it's time for me to sell this lovely beast
I still have mine, this camera introduced me to the Panasonic universe 👍👍😁
Never regretted getting this camera everything I shoot is on this!
in 2024 the GX85 is still selling for about $400. I decided to get it for my first MFT camera. I have a Nikon DSLR and a small passel of Nikon lenses and decided that I was going to switch to MFT. I'm primarily a photo shooter but my goal is to get into more video. I had initially planned on the GH5, but then the GH6 came out and I really want that. I decided to get the GX85 first because lots of people say it is really good, and it is much less than the GH6. I'm still waiting for it to arrive in the mail, but I a couple MFT lenses and an adapter for my Nikon lenses. I'm hoping to get some time in with the GX85 and build up a better collection of MFT lenses to be able to justify spending on the GH6 eventually.
I bought too a used gx80 (european version) after seeing the wonderful videos of Spencer! 😄
Had mine for 6 months but the lack of mic input was a dealbreaker for me. I opted for the G90 instead (G95 in the US) which is a bit more bulky but suits my needs better.
this is so awesome, i really wish i could buy one. but being in brazil it just kind of makes it impossible :(
Finally a New Video :)
I can't remember: Have you played with either version of the LX100 cameras? I'm a Fuji user, but I *still* love my Lumix LX100 (mark 1) - so much fun to use, and really versatile, too.
Are you me? lol. I also had LX100 mark 1. I regret that I sold it. I still have Fuji X100F and my trusty Fuji X70 tho.
I have the G85 and it’s fairly comparable in size and weight to the gx85- better view finder - has a mic jack is weather sealed and only has a 1.1 crop in 4k rather than 1.25 on the g95 - if you can get one second hand as well it’s a good video option
A man after my own heart. I’ve loved my GX85 over the past few years especially with the 20mm f/1.7. I think of it as a poor man’s X100F/V.
I think the GX85 may have a slight edge as a hybrid camera. Since it has IBIS for video and doesn't overheat. Both are great cameras still!
How do you manage to get perfect focus with the 15mm f1.7 while filming video? Can you make a tutorial for that, please?🙏🙏🙏
This with the Rode Wireless Go II’s new update makes it’s a solid beginners set up.
I have the same camera. It is amazing and has put my other cameras to shame as this is the one I gravitate towards most of the time. IBIS and no AA filter make it amazing!
this or the g85, first camera for photo product and videos for social media?
Thanks!
Actually, I got the GX80/85 from ebay but it turned out, it's too similar sizewise to it's larger brother G85, which is my main camera :-) So I sold it and got the GX800/GF9 instead....which is EVEN SMALLER! So now my G85 is my main camera and the GX800 is the "take anywhere" cam...especially with the 14mm, 20mm prime lenses....it's TINY! (It doesn't have a viewfinder or IBIS though....)
Really enjoy you video. Always smart. The camera is beautiful. Thanks.
Thanks Nigel! I like a lot your videos and this one is not the exemption 👌
Você é português ou brasileiro? Kkkk bom saber que da pra comentar em português aqui
Hi Nigel could you check out the Panasonic Gx8? I’d love to hear your opinion on it
I sold mine and kind of regret it. It is an amazing camera. I moved to Fuji but will definitely re-buy this camera or get the GX9 1 day. I miss the small form factor and great quality. I have an X-H1 now and it's huge compared to this tiny beast.
Pai é Pai e se não atendes ... ai ai ! Grande abraço , sempre aqui a ver os teus videos.
I love mine but no mic jack is making me upgrade. Wondering if you saw Bo Burnhams special on Netflix? Looks like it was shot on a lumix S1
Love it! Can I ask what lens you are using for your talking head shot? Love the bokeh.
I have now the fx6 as my first cam, but I am searching for a second cam for holidays 😂 but I think it will be a Sony, maybe an RX 100 😉👍🏻 best cinematic greetings from a little german YT filmmaker
My main and only camera for photo and video, want a second one)
The most underrated camera EVERR
I really want this camera, but to shipped it to my place there's a shipping price about $100😩
I could imagine how great this camera is. I own a Panasonic Lumix G85 is more a video oriented than this one but has the same quality and I love it.
Had one, so much good moments with it. Best value hybrid camera, bar none.
Got a GX9 because it was in a good package with the Panasonic 12-60, that I wanted; the plan was to sold the body, keep the lens but...sold the GX85 and kept the GX9, liked it so much.
Cons against the GX9 (and could be a big one): in 4k, it crops even more than the GX85, and yeah, it is noticeable. If you intend to shoot a lot of wide angle video, it could be a serious problem.
Better (for me) in the GX9: the return of the tiltable EVF (incredible for tripod work, for use it pointing the camera upwards using the EVF, and to grab the camera like a TLR against your body), the return of the focus mode switch (I switch a lot between AF and MF when shooting concerts), color science (looks like the same color science of the G9, it is VERY good, almost Fuji/Olympus levels), AF is better (even in video sometimes, much better than the GX85, Eye AF much better than the GX85).
Can't go wrong with both.
Sweet B-roll as usual, Nigel! Awesome little camera, it seems! (also, not sure if I missed it in previous videos, but did you change the framing in your A-Roll? Either way, looks good, especially fitting in the ending card 🙂)
Um abraço de Portugal!
I using a Lumix Gx85 camera,I really like it.Lumix Gx85 give me inspiration in photography
,sure 99%...Thank you review about it.
Sweet little camera man
wow very surprised by the picture quality. Does it have a recording limit? Looking to pickup something to record long-form podcasts with🤔
No recording limit on the US version
That shot at 1:45. Wow.
Magic hour
I have better bodies but every now and then I still pull this little dude out when I want a pocket cam while out on the streets. It is still relevant in 2024. With a 14mm pancake which is a 28mm equivalent on a full frame, you got yourself a solid combo.
