I had this camera on my hit list for over a year but I lived somewhere where I couldn't buy it in a store and financially it was right on the edge of my budget. I tried to buy it online but the 'agency' told me a week and 6 weeks later I still had nothing so got my money back and bought a field recorder (I'm a musician) A year later I sold one of my guitars to have another go at buying it and found it second hand good as new locally with two lenses and nice bag so in the end it worked out well. I've always owned a camera being a trained artist and visual person though I am not a photographer professional, but the after owning two early Leica digital cameras the Lumix range was where I headed when Leica started making seriously expensive gear. The GF3 was nice but this GX85 is awesome. I am sure there are plenty of other great cameras that I never tried but I really love this little GX85. You won't be disappointed.
@@TheCompleteGuitarist wow you went on journey for the GX85. So happy you got it tho and in good condition! I'm sure the wait was rewarding :) I'm saving for it now and hope to have it by next year so I can get on Spencer's level lol this camera lives in my brain rent free, I think about it so much

It is 2022 and this camera still rocks. I can't believe I purchased mine for around $650 but that include the GX85, 3 lenses (the kit, the Lumix 14-140 F3.5-5.6 and the Leica DG Summilux 25mm F1.4, 3 batteries and a bag. I know there are new cameras out there but tell me where can I get that combo for that price. That's the amazing part of live in El Salvador here many people think that you get beautiful photos and videos just with a full frame.
I was shocked when I saw you only have ~600 subscribers. This is an amazingly beautiful video. Your channel is definitely gonna take off! Looking to get a cheapish camera and I'm amazed you produced results like this with something this inexpensive.
Thank you so much man!!! If you end up going with this camera, you'll love it. Another alternative option is the G85 as well if you want to use a mic with your system.
This one video has convinced me to get this camera. Also, thank you, thank you ,thank you! For showing footage in 1080 60P instead of just focusing solely on 4k like most people who get a 4k capable camera tend to do! They focus solely on 4k and don't even bother to show the other filming resolutions which is kind of off putting. When they do that basically just review only half of the product!
After watching many videos on cameras, specifically budget cameras, I came across the gx80/85 , which then led me to your video. I finally got it today with a used 25mm 1.7 on eBay all for £350 and watching your videos with this camera makes me excited to use it. I would love to see more videos on this camera on your channel such as editing the footage, your full settings for video, colour grading etc. Thank you for this video and keep it going. You’ve earned my sub!
Thank you so much Spencer for all your videos regarding the GX85. I was struggling to decide between the Sony a6000, Lumix GF9 and Lumix GX85. I got all confusions cleared and now I've ordered my GX85.

A really nice bonus on the US models is unlimited time 4K shooting. No 30 minute limit!!!! I have seven of these I use at dog sports events, where I set them up and let them run continuously for several hours (with a battery adapter and external pack). Just make sure you pop the screen out to help keep it cool - they're pretty unhappy if it's over ~85°F.
I've looked at a dozen gh6 videos and about the same on this camera and...this just looks more organic and beautiful to me. Thanks for this engaging video.
Thank you so much Len! I have to agree, I do think this footage looks better than a lot of the GH6 footage out there. I will say, I feel like many out there with the GH6 don't know how to extract the proper image out of it, and preserve it all the way through post. Some shoot at strange settings, with super sharp glass with no filtration. Some may butcher the colour grade as well. I think the camera needs to be in the right hands for us to all appreciate the GH6.
Thanks for the video Spencer, a strong reminder that it is not always the gear but how we use what we have. I had the GX85 but upgraded to the GX9. Yes, it's an upgrade in every sense but part of me always miss the simple charm of GX85.
Thank you so much man! It's definitely capable of producing beautiful images. I feel like people sometimes have a hard time working with the footage to get it to that point.
You help choose the gx a few years ago for my Travels. just pulled it out of storage to use and i find myself back at your channel! i gotta catch up on your vids. I remember i loved your vid style
I found your videos when I bought the GX85 a couple of years ago, and I just came back before I bought the 25mm 1.7. Such a lovely camera, especially for people like me who only use it occasionally. Thanks for giving us all the confidence we needed to make the purchase :)
Have both the GX85 and GX9. Both really do get the job done. I like the Leica 15mm f1.7, 25mm f 1.4, and the Leica 12-60 mm f2.8-3.5 zoom. I use the zoom on vacation and the others for street work. Great video and the tips are certainly worth giving a try.
Great work as always... It's a great B-cam to the GH5 (which is why I originally bought it); the colors match up, same basic menus system, same lenses, yada. I also now use it for walk around/family photos and videos because of its minimal size, ease of use, and great image. The battery life on this camera is also shockingly good considering the small size of the battery. Used, it might be the best steal of deal going.
Paired with the Leica 15mm 1.7 is very underrated... I love this setup till today. I tend to bring this with me more than my S5 for trips. The image quality for this old camera along with the Lumix color science out of camera is something special.
I just got the gx85, and I came across this video on my recommended. Thank you so much for this video. I will definitely fall in love with this camera.
Thank you my friend...I am looking for a camera for daily use. I find your videos and thank you for your efforts. I am going to buy a GX85 soon in 2023. Thank you for the video.
My god what a beautiful video, I've been watching some reviews of this camera and the fact that doesn't have mic input was kind of a deal breaker, but now watching your video and all that footage I thing I'll buy it.
Agreed. Great video..👍 I've had this camera a few years now, I've looked around wondering whether to replace it, but there's so much included with this camera, that anything that even matches it is double the price.. It's great for video, and takes great sharp photos too. I (like you) have kept to two lenses so far.. The 12-32 kit lens, which is compact, and sharp and of course has image stabilization as well as the body. Therefore doubling up stabilization and doing an awesome job. (This camera was one of the very first Panasonic's to feature in body stabilization..) Also, I have the Leica Summilux 15mm F1.7. That's one of the sharpest and most beautiful lenses I've ever owned. Is of course a 30mm equivalent. And when mounted on the GX80 / GX85 makes a fantastic street shooting set up. Small, discreet, sharp & powerful. I've still not tried the 4K mode, or 4K photo mode or stop motion, or many other features. One feature I must mention though is the in-camera timelapse feature.. It's absolutely stunning, and well worth a look... If my camera broke for any reason I'd buy another one immediately.... I did try the GX9 briefly, but wasn't hugely impressed., Not much different, and the AWB was always wrong, compared to that on the GX80/GX85 which uncannily guesses correctly most of the time.. I do use Canon Full Frame for some work, but because I use the Panasonic so much more due to it's size and portability, I'd say that many of my favourite photos have come from the Panasonic. It really is a gem of a camera..
Thank you Isle! That 15mm sounds lovely, I think that's a great focal length on M43 for street photography, perfect honestly lol. My go to is shooting 28mm on FF for street photography so it's right there basically. It sure is a gem!
February 2025, i bought it as a third hand. Very good copy with 3000 shutter count n not single scratch or other issues.. Been a Nikon shooter since 2015. Due to tennis elbow I can't use heavy equipment anymore. Moved to MFT. I'm getting used to the size... Let's see how it goes. Wish me luck.
Really well done. Great videography and editing along with an articulate narrative. I appreciate your generous spirit relative to sharing your knowledge and information. Thank you!
Beautiful shots mate! I love the gx80 + 25mm f1.7 Combination. Exceptional quality for the money! I am considering to upgrade to the g9, but I will never sell my gx80 ❤️
Love your content. Just a tip though, it would just be a tad bit better if you smiled a little and not look so serious most of the time lol I just noticed how the mood shifted starting at 2:47, you’ve been telling us how great this camera is at the beginning but the look on your face is the one that sold me the idea that this camera is awesome. Goodluck on your channel!
It's a fantastic little camera. I just picked up a couple of them in May along with some G80s (which is essentially the same thing, but with a flippy out LCD, a mic socket and Cinelike D without having to hack the firmware, heh) just for video. I can film probably 95% of the stuff I'll ever need to shoot with those cameras.
Outside of action cam footage on my hikes, I never shoot video but my god, you are wonderfully skilled. Nothing reiterates the point that yes, the camera does matter but who is using it matters a hell of a lot more. I also use MFT, the Em1 Mark III to be precise but I do strictly photography with about 75% of it being wildlife. However, I’ve never felt as inclined to try and shoot video the next time I’m out as I have after watching what you have done. It truly is impressive because not only does it serve as a testament to your art but it also props up the MFT segment which so often, albeit ignorantly, gets ridiculed.
GX85 was my first camera, and I still believe it was the best bang for your buck for video, and surprisingly decent for photography too. Now I primarily use a GH5, but the GX85 is still a worthy b-cam, and matches pretty well. It also makes a great live streaming camera as well (using a dummy battery power adapter and an hdmi capture device).
I have the gx85 and I can never sell this camera. I honestly think it’s the best camera Panasonic has ever introduced. Yes it’s older but at its time. It was seriously underrated. Install a 14-140 lens and the 25mm leica lens and you’re set for amateur. I get compliments to this day with the photos I take with it.
I bring the 12-32 and 20mm f1.7 everywhere with the GX85. Low light capability and Zoom from anywhere. The 25mm f1.7 sounds nice too even though I don't have it. You don't even need a camera bag. Just some loose fitting shorts or khaki pants.
I own a GH5 but I'm looking for a more portable version for traveling. It's crazy that this 4-year-old camera still is extremely competitive in the market. I wish they would have refresh it with phase detection and a screen that flips all the way above so I can film myself without having to pull out my smartphone to monitor what's in the frame.. but still with a few compact primes as the 20mm 1.7, 45mm 1.8 and the kit lens, this is a very compelling package.
Okay... you've convinced me it's time to take my GX85 off the shelf and get shooting!!! Like others, I would love to hear more about your process with this camera. I'm particularly interested in how you handle color corrections / grading. I'm kind of an amateur, but I found that my footage needed quite a bit of correction. I was shooting 4K/30p with a 12-32mm lense. I don't know if that would make a big difference. You shoot 1080/60p right? Anyways... great video! You've inspired me to jump back in with this camera!
That's so awesome! I actually shoot most of my stuff at 4k 24p and about 10% at 1080 60P. I just uploaded a new video a few days back about my grading process if you'd like to give that a look!
Great video, thanks for sharing. I recently ordered a GX85 as a compliment to my G9. I have a GX1 with EVF for travel that has worked well over the years but the dynamic range is very poor and lack of IBIS cost me some city night shots on a few occasions. I'm really looking forward to using the GX85, 12-32, 35-100, and 20 f/1.7 on a few trips.
With it since 2 years now and just love it... Haven't used it for video but now I will. And it is a beaut..get so many comments from friends about how cool it looks.
You are a master or a master in the making. You have achieved such fine results with this underrated beast of a camera! I can't seem to get it right, would highly appreciate it if you could post some tutorials! Cheers :)
Should have come near by for some more souvlaki!! nice video ! still using my gx 87 with a Leica 15mm 1.7 - a Lumix G 25mm f/1.7 & a nikon afs 50mm with an adaptor.!! great for everything!

Samuel thank you so much for the support and love, I appreciate it!
Thank you!
Thanks so much for the kind words Phillip!
You did some very beautiful shots
Beautiful shots mate! I love the gx80 + 25mm f1.7 Combination. Exceptional quality for the money! I am considering to upgrade to the g9, but I will never sell my gx80 ❤️
Absolutely! I hear the G9 is a beautiful camera, a great compliment and/or A cam to the GX80!
Beautiful footage, Spencer. You have a lot of talent.
Nathanael, your words mean a ton, thank you!
I came for the camera review and i subscribed for the content. Beautiful images.
Thank you so much for the love man, I appreciate it!
Love your content. Just a tip though, it would just be a tad bit better if you smiled a little and not look so serious most of the time lol
I just noticed how the mood shifted starting at 2:47, you’ve been telling us how great this camera is at the beginning but the look on your face is the one that sold me the idea that this camera is awesome. Goodluck on your channel!
Hey brother thank you for the suggestion! I usually am a little uptight when I first start recording talking head videos haha, I’m working on it!
Beautiful shots, great editing and you seem very likeable and genuine. Instant sub. Peace.
Lovely footage Spencer. I confess I am a little shocked that it was taken with those 2 lenses even though I know they were "decent" lenses.
I do have the same GX85 but have not use very much I watch your video it very good Thank you.
Beautiful Film and Audio
Now I want that camera for update videos thx for showing.😍
Of course Marii!
Amazing Video, Love it. GJ Man
It's a fantastic little camera.
Haha thank you so much Johnny!!!! Your words mean a lot, I really appreciate it!
Moon Think understand the GH5 have the improved 20megapixel sensor. Is the photo and video quality much improved over the GX85?
is the sony a6400 a better choice?
I have the gx85 and I can never sell this camera. I honestly think it’s the best camera Panasonic has ever introduced. Yes it’s older but at its time. It was seriously underrated. Install a 14-140 lens and the 25mm leica lens and you’re set for amateur. I get compliments to this day with the photos I take with it.
Maaaan the gx85 is a little beast of a camera man
Oh you got that right bro! Slept on for sure.
Dude,..this channel is awesome.. 👍👍
I imagine to buy a best budget camera that can shoot beautiful footage.. u inspire me, thanx a lot.. 🙏🙏
Thank you so much my friend, you can do a ton with budget cameras, people just don't take the time to do it since not many people talk about it!
Great video and footage. I use my GX85 for street photography. After watching your video I'm going to try more videography with it. Thanks much!
I bring the 12-32 and 20mm f1.7 everywhere with the GX85. Low light capability and Zoom from anywhere. The 25mm f1.7 sounds nice too even though I don't have it. You don't even need a camera bag. Just some loose fitting shorts or khaki pants.
I wasn't even done watching the vid and I had to click Like lol
HAHA! That's amazing my friend, so glad you liked it!
Love the buffalo Trace…great bourbon…..Great video, looking at purchasing the gx85 in 2021. I still think it’s a great camera for todays price
Nice channel. I love my gx85 and use exactly the 2 lenses you were talking about. Subscribed, greetings from germany
I just bought this camera, excited to try it out!! :D
How do you like it ? : )
Is it still worth it
Okay... you've convinced me it's time to take my GX85 off the shelf and get shooting!!!
@@SpencerWhiteman I actually already checked it out. Thanks for sharing your process!
Nicely done. I enjoyed the images -- you displayed plenty of skill in your presentation, and thanks for sharing your perspective.
Thank you so much my friend!
Great colour profiles
Great video, thanks for sharing. I recently ordered a GX85 as a compliment to my G9. I have a GX1 with EVF for travel that has worked well over the years but the dynamic range is very poor and lack of IBIS cost me some city night shots on a few occasions. I'm really looking forward to using the GX85, 12-32, 35-100, and 20 f/1.7 on a few trips.
With it since 2 years now and just love it... Haven't used it for video but now I will. And it is a beaut..get so many comments from friends about how cool it looks.
Absolutely man! I love the design, so minimal and classy looking.
Excellent camera
Man, the grading is really awesome
Thank you so much my friend!
Great video..👍 I LOVE MY CAMERA MUCH MORE NOW !!!
Awesome my man!
You are a master or a master in the making. You have achieved such fine results with this underrated beast of a camera! I can't seem to get it right, would highly appreciate it if you could post some tutorials! Cheers :)
Get out of here! Thank you so much my friend, those words mean a lot. I'll be sure to post more content with the GX85, thank you!
@@SpencerWhiteman Pleasure is all mine! looking forward to any tutorials for beginners especially to achieve a fine look! :) cheers
Your video is cinematic beauty.
Thank you so much Mike!
Should have come near by for some more souvlaki!!
